Regularity criteria for the 3D Navier-Stokes and MHD equations

We prove that a solution to the 3D Navier-Stokes or MHD equations does not blow up at $t=T$ provided $\displaystyle \limsup_{q \to \infty} \int_{\mathcal{T}_q}^T \|Δ_q(\nabla \times u)\|_\infty \, dt$ is small enough, where $u$ is the velocity, $Δ_q$ is the Littlewood-Paley projection, and $\mathcal T_q$ is a certain sequence such that $\mathcal T_q \to T$ as $q \to \infty$. This improves many existing regularity criteria.

Anomalous dissipation, anomalous work, and energy balance for smooth solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper, we study the energy balance for a class of solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations with external forces in dimensions three and above. The solution and force are smooth on $(0,T)$ and the total dissipation and work of the force are both finite. We show that a possible failure of the energy balance stems from two effects. The first is the \emph{anomalous dissipation} of the solution, which has been studied in many contexts. The second is what we call the \emph{anomalous work} done by the force, a phenomenon that has not been analyzed before. There are numerous examples of solutions exhibiting \emph{anomalous work}, for which even a continuous energy profile does not rule out the anomalous dissipation, but only implies the balance of the strengths of these two effects, which we confirm in explicit constructions. More importantly, we show that there exist solutions exhibiting \emph{anomalous dissipation} with zero \emph{anomalous work}. Hence the violation of the energy balance results from the nonlinearity of the solution instead of artifacts of the force. Such examples exist in the class $u \in L_t^{3 } B^{\frac{1}{3} -}_{3,\infty}$ and $f \in L_t^{2-} H^{-1}$, which implies the sharpness of many existing conditions on the energy balance.

Determining modes for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations

We introduce a determining wavenumber for the forced 3D Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) defined for each individual solution. Even though this wavenumber blows up if the solution blows up, its time average is uniformly bounded for all solutions on the global attractor. The bound is compared to Kolmogorov's dissipation wavenumber and the Grashof constant.

Nonuniqueness of weak solutions for the transport equation at critical space regularity

We consider the linear transport equations driven by an incompressible flow in dimensions $d\geq 3$. For divergence-free vector fields $u \in L^1_t W^{1,q}$, the celebrated DiPerna-Lions theory of the renormalized solutions established the uniqueness of the weak solution in the class $L^\infty_t L^p$ when $\frac{1}{p} + \frac{1}{q} \leq 1$. For such vector fields, we show that in the regime $\frac{1}{p} + \frac{1}{q} > 1$, weak solutions are not unique in the class $ L^1_t L^p$. One crucial ingredient in the proof is the use of both temporal intermittency and oscillation in the convex integration scheme.

Stationary and discontinuous weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations

We prove that there exists a nontrivial finite energy periodic stationary weak solution to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations (NSE). The construction relies on a convex integration scheme utilizing new stationary building blocks designed specifically for the NSE. The constructed family of approximate stationary solutions is also used to prove the existence of weak solutions of the NSE with energy profiles discontinuous on a dense set of positive Lebesgue measure.

On the determining wavenumber for the nonautonomous subcritical SQG equation

A time-dependent determining wavenumber was introduced in [5] to estimate the number of determining modes for the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation. In this paper we continue this investigation focusing on the subcritical case and study trajectories inside an absorbing set bounded in $L^\infty$. Utilizing this bound we find a time-independent determining wavenumber that improves the estimate obtained in [5]. This classical approach is more direct, but it is contingent on the existence of the $L^\infty$ absorbing set.

Kolmogorov's dissipation number and the number of degrees of freedom for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations

Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence predicts that only wavenumbers below some critical value, called Kolmogorov's dissipation number, are essential to describe the evolution of a three-dimensional fluid flow. A determining wavenumber, first introduced by Foias and Prodi for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations, is a mathematical analog of Kolmogorov's number. The purpose of this paper is to prove the existence of a time-dependent determining wavenumber for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations whose time average is bounded by Kolmogorov's dissipation wavenumber for all solutions on the global attractor whose intermittency is not extreme.

Determining modes for the surface Quasi-Geostrophic equation

We introduce a determining wavenumber for the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation defined for each individual trajectory and then study its dependence on the force. While in the subcritical and critical cases this wavenumber has a uniform upper bound, it may blow up when the equation is supercritical. A bound on the determining wavenumber provides determining modes, which in some sense measure the number of degrees of freedom of the flow, or resolution needed to describe a solution to the SQG equation.

Energy equality for the Navier-Stokes equations in weak-in-time Onsager spaces

Onsager's conjecture for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations concerns the validity of energy equality of weak solutions with regards to their smoothness. In this note we establish energy equality for weak solutions in a large class of function spaces. These conditions are weak-in-time with optimal space regularity and therefore weaker than all previous classical results. Heuristics using intermittency argument suggests the possible sharpness of our results.

The existence of a global attractor for the forced critical surface quasi-geostrophic equation in $L^2$

We prove that the critical surface quasi-geostrophic equation driven by a force $f$ possesses a compact global attractor in $L^2(\mathbb T^2)$ provided $f\in L^p(\mathbb T^2)$ for some $p>2$. First, the De Giorgi method is used to obtain uniform $L^\infty$ estimates on viscosity solutions. Even though this does not provide a compact absorbing set, the existence of a compact global attractor follows from the continuity of solutions, which is obtained by estimating the energy flux using the Littlewood-Paley decomposition.

Global attractor for a Ginzburg-Landau type model of rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the long time behavior of solutions to a nonlinear partial differential equation arising in the description of trapped rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. The equation can be seen as a hybrid between the well-known nonlinear Schrödinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the Ginzburg-Landau equation. We prove existence and uniqueness of global in-time solutions in the physical energy space and establish the existence of a global attractor within the associated dynamics. We also obtain basic structural properties of the attractor and an estimate on its Hausdorff and fractal dimensions.

Ill-posedness of the Navier-Stokes and magneto-hydrodynamics systems

We demonstrate that the three dimensional incompressible magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) system is ill-posed due to the discontinuity of weak solutions in a wide range of spaces. Specifically, we construct initial data which has finite energy and is small in certain spaces, such that any Leray-Hopf type of weak solution to the MHD system starting from this initial data is discontinuous at time $t=0$ in such spaces. An analogous result is also obtained for the Navier-Stokes equation which extends the previous result of ill-posedness in $\dot B^{-1}_{\infty,\infty}$ by Cheskidov and Shvydkoy to spaces that are not necessarily critical. The region of the spaces where the norm inflation occurs almost touches $L^2$.

Norm inflation for generalized magneto-hydrodynamic system

We consider the three-dimensional incompressible magneto-hydrodynamic system with fractional powers of the Laplacian. We discover a wide range of spaces where the norm inflation occurs and hence small initial data results are out of reach. The norm inflation occurs not only in scaling invariant (critical) spaces, but also in supercritical, and, surprisingly, subcritical ones.

Degenerate pullback attractors for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations

As in our previous paper, the 3D Navier-Stokes equations with a translationally bounded force contain pullback attractors in a weak sense. Moreover, those attractors consist of complete bounded trajectories. In this paper, we present a sufficient condition under which the pullback attractors are degenerate. That is, if the Grashof constant is small enough, the pullback attractor will be a single point on a unique, complete, bounded, strong solution. We then apply our results to provide a new proof of the existence of a unique, strong, periodic solution to the 3D Navier-Stokes with a small, periodic forcing term.

Gaining two derivatives on a singular force in the 2D Navier-Stokes equations

It has long been known, for the autonomous 2D Navier-Stokes equations with singular forcing, that there exist unique solutions which gain one derivative, globally. On the other hand, if the forcing term smooth enough, it is known that the solution gains two derivatives globally. In this paper, we explore classical techniques to show that if the force is sufficiently smooth, then the solution gains two derivatives globally. These methods break down when the force becomes singular. In this scenario, we use a Littlewood-Paley decomposition in Fourier space to show that a solutions gain two derivatives locally in time and the interval of time depends only on the size of the initial data.

Uniform global attractors for the nonautonomous 3D Navier-Stokes equations

We obtain the existence and the structure of the weak uniform (with respect to the initial time) global attractor and construct a trajectory attractor for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) with a fixed time-dependent force satisfying a translation boundedness condition. Moreover, we show that if the force is normal and every complete bounded solution is strongly continuous, then the uniform global attractor is strong, strongly compact, and solutions converge strongly toward the trajectory attractor. Our method is based on taking a closure of the autonomous evolutionary system without uniqueness, whose trajectories are solutions to the nonautonomous 3D NSE. The established framework is general and can also be applied to other nonautonomous dissipative partial differential equations for which the uniqueness of solutions might not hold. It is not known whether previous frameworks can also be applied in such cases as we indicate in open problems related to the question of uniqueness of the Leray-Hopf weak solutions.
