Pullback Attractors for Generalized Evolutionary Systems

We give an abstract framework for studying nonautonomous PDEs, called a generalized evolutionary system. In this setting, we define the notion of a pullback attractor. Moreover, we show that the pullback attractor, in the weak sense, must always exist. We then study the structure of these attractors and the existence of a strong pullback attractor. We then apply our framework to both autonomous and nonautonomous evolutionary systems as they first appeared in earlier works by Cheskidov, Foias, and Lu. In this context, we compare the pullback attractor to both the global attractor (in the autonomous case) and the uniform attractor (in the nonautonomous case). Finally, we apply our results to the nonautonomous 3D Navier-Stokes equations on a periodic domain with a translationally bounded force. We show that the Leray-Hopf weak solutions form a generalized evolutionary system and must then have a weak pullback attractor.

Regularizing Effect of the Forward Energy Cascade in the Inviscid Dyadic Model

We study the inviscid dyadic model of the Euler equations and prove some regularizing properties of the nonlinear term that occur due to forward energy cascade. We show every solution must have 3/5 L^2-based (or 1/10 L^3-based) regularity for all positive time. We conjecture this holds up to Onsager's scaling, where the L^2-based exponent is 5/6 and the L^3-based exponent is 1/3.

Norm Inflation for Generalized Navier-Stokes Equations

We consider the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation with a fractional power $α\in[1,\infty)$ of the Laplacian in the three dimensional case. We prove the existence of a smooth solution with arbitrarily small in $\dot{B}_{\infty,p}^{-α}$ ($2 0$ in arbitrarily small time. This extends the result of Bourgain and Pavlović for the classical Navier-Stokes equation which utilizes the fact that the energy transfer to low modes increases norms with negative smoothness indexes. It is remarkable that the space $\dot{B}_{\infty,\infty}^{-α}$ is supercritical for $α>1$. Moreover, the norm inflation occurs even in the case $α\geq 5/4$ where the global regularity is known.

A continuous model for turbulent energy cascade

In this paper we introduce a new PDE model in frequency space for the inertial energy cascade that reproduces the classical scaling laws of Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence. Our point of view is based upon studying the energy flux through a continuous range of scales rather than the discrete set of dyadic scales. The resulting model is a variant of Burgers equation on the half line with a boundary condition which represents a constant energy input at integral scales. The viscous dissipation is modeled via a damping term. We show existence of a unique stationary solution, both in the viscous and inviscid cases, which replicates the classical dissipation anomaly in the limit of vanishing viscosity. A survey of recent developments in the deterministic approach to the laws of turbulence, and in particular, to Onsager's conjecture is given.

A unified approach to regularity problems for the 3D Navier-Stokes and Euler equations: the use of Kolmogorov's dissipation range

Motivated by Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence we present a unified approach to the regularity problems for the 3D Navier-Stokes and Euler equations. We introduce a dissipation wavenumber $Λ(t)$ that separates low modes where the Euler dynamics is predominant from the high modes where the viscous forces take over. Then using an indifferent to the viscosity technique we obtain a new regularity criterion which is weaker than every Ladyzhenskaya-Prodi-Serrin condition in the viscous case, and reduces to the Beale-Kato-Majda criterion in the inviscid case. In the viscous case we also we prove that Leray-Hopf solutions are regular provided $Λ\in L^{5/2}$, which improves our previous $Λ\in L^\infty$ condition. We also show that $Λ\in L^1$ for all Leray-Hopf solutions. Finally, we prove that Leray-Hopf solutions are regular when the time-averaged spatial intermittency is small, i.e., close to Kolmogorov's regime.

The vanishing viscosity limit for a dyadic model

A dyadic shell model for the Navier-Stokes equations is studied in the context of turbulence. The model is an infinite nonlinearly coupled system of ODEs. It is proved that the unique fixed point is a global attractor, which converges to the global attractor of the inviscid system as viscosity goes to zero. This implies that the average dissipation rate for the viscous system converges to the anomalous dissipation rate for the inviscid system (which is positive) as viscosity goes to zero. This phenomenon is called the dissipation anomaly predicted by Kolmogorov's theory for the actual Navier-Stokes equations.

On the regularity of weak solutions of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations in $B^{-1}_{\infty,\infty}$

We show that if a Leray-Hopf solution $u$ to the 3D Navier-Stokes equation belongs to $C((0,T]; B^{-1}_{\infty,\infty})$ or its jumps in the $B^{-1}_{\infty,\infty}$-norm do not exceed a constant multiple of viscosity, then $u$ is regular on $(0,T]$. Our method uses frequency local estimates on the nonlinear term, and yields an extension of the classical Ladyzhenskaya-Prodi-Serrin criterion.

Leray-alpha model and transition to turbulence in rough-wall boundary layers

In the present study, we use a fifth-order ordinary differential equation, a generalization of the Blasius equation derived from the Leray-alpha model, to examine the transition to turbulence in rough-wall boundary-layer flows. This equation, combined with a weaker formulation of the von Karman log law modified to include the effects of surface roughness, provides a family of turbulent velocity profiles with two free parameters: the momentum thickness based Reynolds number and the roughness function. As a result, a skin-friction correlation is obtained and predictions of the transitional Reynolds numbers and maximal skin-friction values are made based on the roughness function.

An inviscid dyadic model of turbulence: the fixed point and Onsager's conjecture

Properties of an infinite system of nonlinearly coupled ordinary differential equations are discussed. This system models some properties present in the equations of motion for an inviscid fluid such as the skew symmetry and the 3-dimensional scaling of the quadratic nonlinearity. It is proved that the system with forcing has a unique equilibrium and that every solution blows up in finite time in $H^{5/6}$-norm. Onsager's conjecture is confirmed for the model system.

An inviscid dyadic model of turbulence: the global attractor

Properties of an infinite system of nonlinearly coupled ordinary differential equations are discussed. This system models some properties present in the equations of motion for an inviscid fluid such as the skew symmetry and the 3-dimensional scaling of the quadratic nonlinearity. In a companion paper [6] it is proved that every solution for the system with forcing blows up in finite time in the Sobolev $H^{5/6}$ norm. In this present paper, it is proved that after the blow-up time all solutions stay in $H^s$, $s<5/6$ for almost all time and the energy dissipates. Moreover, it is proved that the unique equilibrium is an exponential global attractor.

Global attractors of evolutionary systems

An abstract framework for studying the asymptotic behavior of a dissipative evolutionary system $\mathcal{E}$ with respect to weak and strong topologies was introduced in [8] primarily to study the long-time behavior of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) for which the existence of a semigroup of solution operators is not known. Each evolutionary system possesses a global attractor in the weak topology, but does not necessarily in the strong topology. In this paper we study the structure of a global attractor for an abstract evolutionary system, focusing on omega-limits and attracting, invariant, and quasi-invariant sets. We obtain weak and strong uniform tracking properties of omega-limits and global attractors. In addition, we discuss a trajectory attractor for an evolutionary system and derive a condition under which the convergence to the trajectory attractor is strong.

On global attractors of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations

In view of the possibility that the 3D Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) might not always have regular solutions, we introduce an abstract framework for studying the asymptotic behavior of multi-valued dissipative evolutionary systems with respect to two topologies--weak and strong. Each such system possesses a global attractor in the weak topology, but not necessarily in the strong. In case the latter exists and is weakly closed, it coincides with the weak global attractor. We give a sufficient condition for the existence of the strong global attractor, which is verified for the 3D NSE when all solutions on the weak global attractor are strongly continuous. We also introduce and study a two-parameter family of models for the Navier-Stokes equations, with similar properties and open problems. These models always possess weak global attractors, but on some of them every solution blows up (in a norm stronger than the standard energy one) in finite time.

Energy Dissipation in Fractal-Forced Flow

The rate of energy dissipation in solutions of the body-forced 3-d incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is rigorously estimated with a focus on its dependence on the nature of the driving force. For square integrable body forces the high Reynolds number (low viscosity) upper bound on the dissipation is independent of the viscosity, consistent with the existence of a conventional turbulent energy cascade. On the other hand when the body force is not square integrable, i.e., when the Fourier spectrum of the force decays sufficiently slowly at high wavenumbers, there is significant direct driving at a broad range of spatial scales. Then the upper limit for the dissipation rate may diverge at high Reynolds numbers, consistent with recent experimental and computational studies of "fractal-forced'' turbulence.

Blow-up in finite time for the dyadic model of the Navier-Stokes equations

We study the dyadic model of the Navier-Stokes equations introduced by Katz and Pavlović. They showed a finite time blow-up in the case where the dissipation degree $α$ is less than 1/4. In this paper we prove the existence of weak solutions for all $α$, energy inequality for every weak solution with nonnegative initial datum starting from any time, local regularity for $α> 1/3$, and global regularity for $α\geq 1/2$. In addition, we prove a finite time blow-up in the case where $α<1/3$. It is remarkable that the model with $α=1/3$ enjoys the same estimates on the nonlinear term as the 4D Navier-Stokes equations. Finally, we discuss a weak global attractor, which coincides with a maximal bounded invariant set for all $α$ and becomes a strong global attractor for $α\geq 1/2$.
