Quantum metrology and coherence

We address the relation between quantum metrological resolution and coherence. We examine this dependence in two manners: we develop a quantum Wiener-Kintchine theorem for a suitable model of quantum ruler, and we compute the Fisher information. The two methods have the virtue of including both the contributions of probe and measurement on an equal footing. We illustrate this approach with several examples of linear and nonlinear metrology. Finally, we optimize resolution regarding coherence as a finite resource.

Detector self-tomography

We present an intuitive model of detector self-tomography. Two identical realisations of the detector are illuminated by an entangled state that connects the joint statistics in a way in which each detector sees the other as a kind of mirror reflection. A suitable analysis of the statistics reveals the possibility of fully characterizing the detector. We apply this idea to Bell-type experiments revealing their nonclassical nature.

Violation of Bell quantum probability inequalities with classical fields

Violations of Bell inequalities in classical optics have been demonstrated in terms of field mean intensities and correlations, however, the quantum meaning of violations point to statistics and probabilities. We present a violation of Bell inequalities for classical fields in terms of probabilities, where we convert classical-field intensities into probabilities via the standard photon-counting equation. We find violation for both, entangled and separable field states. We conclude that any obtained quantum effect might be fully ascribed to the quantum nature of the detector rather than the field itself. Finally, we develop a new Bell-like criterion which is satisfied by factorized states and it is not by the entangled state.

Observed quantum dynamics: classical dynamics and lack of Zeno effect

We examine a case study where classical evolution emerges when observing a quantum evolution. By using a single-mode quantum Kerr evolution interrupted by measurement of the double-homodyne kind (projecting the evolved field state into classical-like coherent states or quantum squeezed states), we show that irrespective of whether the measurement is classical or quantum there is no quantum Zeno effect and the evolution turns out to be classical.

Classical and quantum complementarity

Two complementary observables can be measured simultaneously so that the exact individual distributions can be recovered by a proper data inversion. We apply this program to the paradigmatic example of the Young interferometer from the classical and quantum points of view. We show complete parallelism between complementarity in the quantum and classical theories. In both domains, complementarity manifests in a pathological behavior for the inferred joint distribution.

Nonclassical joint distributions and Bell measurements

Derivation and experimental violation of Bell-like inequalities involve the measurement of in-compatible observables. Simple complementarity forbids the existence of such joint probabilitydistribution. Moreover, the measurement of incompatible observables requires different experimen-tal procedures, which no necessarily must share a common joint statistics. In this work, we avoidthese difficulties by proposing a joint simultaneous measurement experiment. We can obtain theexact individual statistics of all the observables involved in the Bell inequalities after a suitable datainversion. A lack of positivity or any other pathology of the so retrieved joint distribution is then asignature of nonclassical behavior.

Number-phase entanglement and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering

We use the uncertainty relation between the operators associated to the total number of particles and to the relative phase of two bosonic modes to construct entanglement and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering criteria. These can be tested experimentally in a variety of systems, such as optical fields, Bose-Einstein condensates or mechanical oscillators. While known entanglement criteria involving the phase observable typically require to perform interference measurements by recombining the two systems, our criteria can be tested through local measurements at two spatially distinct positions, to investigate the nonlocal nature of quantum correlations. We present simple examples where our criteria are violated, and show their robustness to noise. Apart from being useful for state characterization, they might find application in quantum information protocols, for example based on number-phase teleportation.

Phase space quantum-classical hybrid model

In this work we provide a complete model of semiclassical theories by including back-reaction and correlation into the picture. We specially aim at the interaction between light and a two-level atom, and we also illustrate it via the coupling of two harmonic oscillators. Quantum and classical systems are treated on the same grounds via the Wigner-Weyl phase-space correspondence of the quantum theory. We show that this model provides a suitable mixture of the quantum and classical degrees of freedom, including the fact that the evolution transfers nonclassical features to the classical subsystem and nonquantum behavior to the quantum subsystem. In that sense, we can no longer distinguish between classical and quantum variables and we need to talk about a hybrid model.

Nonclassical detectors and nonclassicality

According to Born's rule quantum probabilities are given by the overlap between the system state and measurement states in a quite symmetrical way. This means that both contribute to any observed nonclassical effect that is usually attributed just to the observed light state. This is relevant since typical measurement are highly nonclassical by themselves, such as number states and quadrature eigenstates. We show that nonclassical effects only arise provided that the measurement is itself nonclassical. Otherwise there is a classical-like model accounting for the observed statistics.

Entanglement between total intensity and polarization for pairs of coherent states

We examine entanglement between number and polarization, or between number and relative phase, for pairs of coherent states and two-mode squeezed vacuum via linear entropy and covariance criteria. We consider the embedding of the two-mode Hilbert space in a larger space to get a well-defined factorization of the number-phase variables. This can be regarded as a kind of proto-entanglement that can be extracted and converted into real particle entanglement via feasible experimental procedures. In particular this reveals interesting entanglement properties of pairs of coherent states.

Nonclassicality of coherent states: Entanglement of joint statistics

Simple joint measurements of pairs of observables reveal that states considered universally as classical-like, such as SU(2) spin coherent states, Glauber coherent states, and thermal states are actually nonclassical. We show that this holds because we can find a joint measurement the statistics of which is not separable. Eventually this may be extended to all states different from the maximally mixed state.

Complementarity and the pathological statistics of the quantum impossible

Standard quantum physics prevents the existence of a joint statistics for complementary observables. Nevertheless, a joint distribution for complementary observables can be derived from their imperfect simultaneous measurement followed by a suitable data inversion. Quantumness is reflected then in the pathologies of the inferred distribution. We apply this program to the paradigmatic example of complementarity: the wave-particle duality in a Young interferometer.

We provide a very simple case showing that the weak form of the Heisenberg limit can be beaten while the prior information is improved without bias.

Mapping of the 2+1 q-deformed Dirac oscillator onto the q-deformed Jaynes-Cummings model: It's non-relativistic limit and Zitterbewegung effect

We develop the equivalence between the two-dimensional Dirac oscillator and the anti-Jaynes-Cummings model within a q-deformed scenario. We solve the Hamiltonian spectrum and the time evolution for number and coherent initial states, focusing on the appearance of the Zitterbewegung effect. We show the lack of preservation of the q-deformed versions of the total angular momentum that reproduces a collapse-revival structure. We provide suitable relations for the non relativistic limit.

Majorization of quantum polarization distributions

Majorization provides a rather powerful partial-order classification of probability distributions depending only on the spread of the statistics, and not on the actual numerical values of the variable being described. We propose to apply majorization as a meta-measure of quantum polarization fluctuations, this is to say of the degree of polarization. We compare the polarization fluctuations of the most relevant classes of quantum and classical-like states. In particular we test Lieb's conjecture regarding classical-like states as the most polarized and a complementary conjecture that the most unpolarized pure states are the most nonclassical.

All states are nonclassical: entanglement of joint statistics

Joint measurements of two observables reveal that every state is nonclassical, with the only trivial exception of the state with density matrix proportional to the identity. This naturally includes states considered universally as classical-like, such as SU(2) and Glauber coherent states. We show that this holds because we can always find a joint measurement whose statistics is not separable.

Nonlinear fiber gyroscope for quantum metrology

We examine the performance of a nonlinear fiber gyroscope for improved signal detection beating the quantum limits of its linear counterparts. The performance is examined when the nonlinear gyroscope is illuminated by practical field states, such as coherent and quadrature squeezed states. This is compared with the case of more ideal probes such as photon-number states.

Phase-number uncertainty from Weyl commutation relations

We derive suitable uncertainty relations for characteristics functions of phase and number variables obtained from the Weyl form of commutation relations. This is applied to finite-dimensional spin- like systems, which is the case when describing the phase difference between two field modes, as well as to the phase and number of a single-mode field. Some contradictions between the product and sums of characteristic functions are noted.
