Coherence for vectorial waves and majorization

We show that majorization provides a powerful approach to the coherence conveyed by partially polarized transversal electromagnetic waves. Here we present the formalism, provide some examples and compare with standard measures of polarization and coherence of vectorial waves.

Entropic measures of joint uncertainty: effects of lack of majorization

We compute Rényi entropies for the statistics of a noisy simultaneous observation of two complementary observables in two-dimensional quantum systems. The relative amount of uncertainty between two states depends on the uncertainty measure used. These results are not reproduced by a more standard duality relation. We show that these behaviors are consistent with the lack of majorization relation between the corresponding statistics.

Nonclassical polarization dynamics in classical-like states

Quantum polarization is investigated by means of a trajectory picture based on the Bohmian formulation of quantum mechanics. Relevant examples of classical-like two-mode field states are thus examined, namely Glauber and SU(2) coherent states. Although these states are often regarded as classical, the analysis here shows that the corresponding electric-field polarization trajectories display topologies very different from those expected from classical electrodynamics. Rather than incompatibility with the usual classical model, this result demonstrates the dynamical richness of quantum motions, determined by local variations of the system quantum phase in the corresponding (polarization) configuration space, absent in classical-like models. These variations can be related to the evolution in time of the phase, but also to its dependence on configurational coordinates, which is the crucial factor to generate motion in the case of stationary states like those here considered. In this regard, for completeness these results are compared those obtained from nonclassical N00N states.

Nonlinear Michelson interferometer for improved quantum metrology

We examine quantum detection via a Michelson interferometer embedded in a gas with Kerr nonlinearity. This nonlinear interferometer is illuminated by pulses of classical light. This strategy combines the robustness against practical imperfections of classical light with the improvement provided by nonlinear processes. Regarding ultimate quantum limits, we stress that, as a difference with linear schemes, the nonlinearity introduces pulse duration as a new variable into play along with the energy resources.

Nonclassical states from the joint statistics of simultaneous measurements

Nonclassicality cannot be a single-observable property since the statistics of any quantum observable is compatible with classical physics. We develop a general procedure to reveal nonclassical behavior from the joint measurement of multiple observables. This requires enlarged spaces and couplings with auxiliary degrees of freedom so it must be followed by an inversion procedure to infer system properties from the observed statistics. In particular this discloses nonclassical properties of standard examples of classical-like behavior, such as SU(2) and Glauber coherent states. Moreover, when combined with other criteria it would imply that every quantum state would be nonclassical.

Sub-Poissonian and anti-bunching criteria via majorization of statistics

We use majorization and confidence intervals as a convenient tool to compare the uncertainty in photon number for different quantum light states. To this end majorization is formulated in terms of confidence intervals. As a suitable case study we apply this tool to sub- and super-Posissonian behavior and bunching and anti- bunching effects. We focus on the most significant classical and nonclassical states, such as Glauber coherent, thermal, photon number, and squeezed states. We show that majorization provides a more complete analysis that in some relevant situations contradicts the predictions of variance.

Spin state in the propagation of quantum relativistic particles along classical trajectories

We address the propagation of the spin along classical trajectories for a 1/2-spin particle obeying the Dirac equation with scalar potentials. Focusing on classical trajectories as the exact propagation of wave-function discontinuities we find an explicit spin-transport law for the case of the Dirac oscillator. In the general case we examine the spin propagation along classical trajectories emerging as an approximation of the quantum dynamics via the mechanical analog of the optical eikonal asymptotic approach. Throughout we establish as many parallels as possible with the equivalent situation for the electromagnetic field.

SU(2)-invariant depolarization of quantum states of light

We develop an SU(2)-invariant approach to the depolarization of quantum systems as the effect of random unitary SU(2) transformations. From it we derive an SU(2)-invariant Markovian master equation. This is applied to several quantum states examining whether nonclassical states are more sensible to depolarization than the classical ones. Furthermore, we show that this depolarization model provides a nontrivial generalization of depolarization channels to states of arbitrary dimension.

Alternative measures of uncertainty in quantum metrology: Contradictions and limits

We examine a family of intrinsic performance measures in terms of probability distributions that generalize Hellinger distance and Fisher information. They are applied to quantum metrology to assess the uncertainty in the detection of minute changes of physical quantities. We show that different measures lead to contradictory conclusions, including the possibility of arbitrarily small uncertainty for fixed resources. These intrinsic performances are compared with the averaged error in the corresponding estimation problem after single-shot measurements.

Signal detection without finite-energy limits to quantum resolution

We show that there are extremely simple signal detection schemes where the finiteness of energy resources places no limit to the resolution. On the contrary, larger resolution can be obtained with lower energy. To this end the generator of the signal-dependent transformation encoding the signal information on the probe state must be different from the energy. We show that the larger the deviation of the probe state from being minimum-uncertainty state, the better the resolution.

Sub-Heisenberg estimation of non-random phase-shifts

We provide evidence that the uncertainty in detection of small and deterministic phase-shift deviations from a working point can be lower than the Heisenberg bound, for fixed finite mean number of photons. We achieve that by exploiting non-linearity of estimators and coherence with the vacuum.

Angular-momentum nonclassicality by breaking classical bounds on statistics

We derive simple practical procedures revealing the quantum behavior of angular momentum variables by the violation of classical upper bounds on the statistics. Data analysis is minimum and definite conclusions are obtained without evaluation of moments, or any other more sophisticated procedures. These nonclassical tests are very general and independent of other typical quantum signatures of nonclassical behavior such as sub-Poissonian statistics, squeezing, or oscillatory statistics, being insensitive to the nonclassical behavior displayed by other variables.

Contradictory uncertainty relations

We show within a very simple framework that different measures of fluctuations lead to uncertainty relations resulting in contradictory conclusions. More specifically we focus on Tsallis and Renyi entropic uncertainty relations and we get that the minimum uncertainty states of some uncertainty relations are the maximum uncertainty states of closely related uncertainty relations, and vice versa.

Independent nonclassical tests for states and measurements in the same experiment

We show that one single experiment can test simultaneously and independently both the nonclassicality of states and measurements by the violation or fulfillment of classical bounds on the statistics. Nonideal measurements affected by imperfections can be characterized by two bounds depending on whether we test the ideal measurement or the real one.

Nonclassicality of states and measurements by breaking classical bounds on statistics

We derive exceedingly simple practical procedures revealing the quantum nature of states and measurements by the violation of classical upper bounds on the statistics of arbitrary measurements. Data analysis is minimum and definite conclusions are obtained without evaluation of moments, or any other more sophisticated procedures. These nonclassical tests are independent of other typical quantum signatures such as sub-Poissonian statistics, quadrature squeezing, or oscillatory statistics. This approach can be equally well applied to very diverse situations such as single- and two-mode fields, observables with continuous and discrete spectra, finite- and infinite-dimensional systems, and ideal and noisy measurements.
