A characterization of nilpotent Leibniz algebras

W. A. Moens proved that a Lie algebra is nilpotent if and only if it admits an invertible Leibniz-derivation. In this paper we show that with the definition of Leibniz-derivation from W. A. Moens the similar result for non Lie Leibniz algebras is not true. Namely, we give an example of non nilpotent Leibniz algebra which admits an invertible Leibniz-derivation. In order to extend the results of paper W. A. Moens for Leibniz algebras we introduce a definition of Leibniz-derivation of Leibniz algebras which agrees with Leibniz-derivation of Lie algebras case. Further we prove that a Leibniz algebra is nilpotent if and only if it admits an invertible Leibniz-derivation. Moreover, the result that solvable radical of a Lie algebra is invariant with respect to a Leibniz-derivation was extended to the case of Leibniz algebras.

Formal rigidity of the Witt and Virasoro Algebra

The formal rigidity of the Witt and Virasoro algebras was first established by the author in [4]. The proof was based on some earlier results of the author and Goncharowa, and was not presented there. In this paper we give an elementary proof of these facts.

About Leibniz cohomology and deformations of Lie algebras

We compare the second adjoint and trivial Leibniz cohomology spaces of a Lie algebra to the usual ones by a very elementary approach. The comparison gives some conditions, which are easy to verify for a given Lie algebra, for deciding whether it has more Leibniz deformations than just the Lie ones. We also give the complete description of a Leibniz (and Lie) versal deformation of the 4-dimensional diamond Lie algebra, and study the case of its 5-dimensional analogue.

Extensions of associative algebras

In this paper, we give a purely cohomological interpretation of the extension problem for associative algebras; that is the problem of extending an associative algebra by another associative algebra. We then give a similar interpretation of infinitesimal deformations of extensions. In particular, we consider infinitesimal deformations of representations of an associative algebra.

Associative algebra deformations of the Connes-Moscovici's Hopf algebra $\mathcal{H}_1$

We compute the second Hochschild cohomology space $HH^2(\mathcal{H}_1)$ of Connes-Moscovici's Hopf algebra $\mathcal{H}_1$, giving the infinitesimal deformations (up to equivalence) of the associative structure. $HH^2(\mathcal{H}_1)$ is shown to be one dimensional, and thus Connes-Moscovici's formal deformation of $\mathcal{H}_1$ using Rankin-Cohen brackets is unique up to equivalence.

Cohomology and deformations of the infinite dimensional filiform Lie algebra m_2

Denote $\fm_2$ the infinite dimensional $\N$-graded Lie algebra defined by the basis $e_i$ for $i\geq 1$ and by relations $[e_1,e_i]=e_{i+1}$ for all $i\geq 2$, $[e_2,e_j]=e_{j+2}$ for all $j\geq 3$. We compute in this article the bracket structure on $H^1(\fm_2,\fm_2)$, $H^2(\fm_2,\fm_2)$ and in relation to this, we establish that there are only finitely many true deformations of $\fm_2$ in each weight by constructing them explicitely. It turns out that in weight 0 one gets as non-trivial deformation only one formal non-converging deformation.

The moduli space of 3-dimensional associative algebras

In this paper, we give a classification of the 3-dimensional associative algebras over the complex numbers, including a construction of the moduli space, using versal deformations to determine how the space is glued together.

Leibniz algebra deformations of a Lie algebra

In this note we compute Leibniz algebra deformations of the 3-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebra $\mathfrak{n}_3$ and compare it with its Lie deformations. It turns out that there are 3 extra Leibniz deformations. We also describe the versal Leibniz deformation of $\mathfrak{n}_3$ with the versal base.

Cohomology and deformations of the infinite dimensional filiform Lie algebra m_0

Denote m_0 the infinite dimensional N-graded Lie algebra defined by basis e_i, i>= 1 and relations [e_1,e_i] = e_(i+1) for all i>=2. We compute in this article the bracket structure on H1(m_0,m_0), H2(m_0,m_0) and in relation to this, we establish that there are only finitely many true deformations of m_0 in each nonpositive weight, by constructing them explicitely. It turns out that in weight 0 one gets exactly the other two filiform Lie algebras.

Versal deformations of Leibniz algebras

In this work we consider deformations of Leibniz algebras over a field of characteristic zero. The main problem in deformation theory is to describe all non-equivalent deformations of a given object. We give a method to solve this problem completely, namely work out a construction of a versal deformation for a given Leibniz algebra, which induces all non-equivalent deformations and is unique on the infinitesimal level.

Formal deformations, contractions and moduli spaces of Lie algebras

Jump deformations and contractions of Lie algebras are inverse concepts, but the approaches to their computations are quite different. In this paper, we contrast the two approaches, showing how to compute jump deformations from the miniversal deformation of a Lie algebra, and thus arrive at the contractions. We also compute contractions directly. We use the moduli spaces of real 3-dimensional and complex 3 and 4-dimensional Lie algebras as models for explaining a deformation theory approach to computation of contractions.

Extensions of (super) Lie algebras

In this paper, we give a purely cohomological interpretation of the extension problem for (super) Lie algebras; that is the problem of extending a Lie algebra by another Lie algebra. We then give a similar interpretation of infinitesimal deformations of extensions. In particular, we consider infinitesimal deformations of representations of a Lie algebra.

Global Geometric Deformations of the Virasoro algebra, current and affine algebras by Krichever-Novikov type algebra

In two earlier articles we constructed algebraic-geometric families of genus one (i.e. elliptic) Lie algebras of Krichever-Novikov type. The considered algebras are vector fields, current and affine Lie algebras. These families deform the Witt algebra, the Virasoro algebra, the classical current, and the affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras respectively. The constructed families are not equivalent (not even locally) to the trivial families, despite the fact that the classical algebras are formally rigid. This effect is due to the fact that the algebras are infinite dimensional. In this article the results are reviewed and developed further. The constructions are induced by the geometric process of degenerating the elliptic curves to singular cubics. The algebras are of relevance in the global operator approach to the Wess-Zumino-Witten-Novikov models appearing in the quantization of Conformal Field Theory.

Comparison of 3-dimensional Z-graded and Z_2-graded L_Infinity algebras

This article explores L_Infinity structures -- also known as 'strongly homotopy Lie algebras' -- on 3-dimensional vector spaces with both Z- and Z_2-gradings. Since the Z-graded L_Infinity algebras are special cases of Z_2-graded algebras in the induced Z_2-grading, there are generally fewer Z-graded L_Infinity structures on a given space. On the other hand, only degree zero automorphisms, rather than just even automorphisms, are used to determine equivalence in a Z-graded space. We therefore find nontrivial examples in which the map from the Z-graded moduli space to the Z_2-graded moduli space is bijective, injective but not surjective, or surjective but not injective. Additionally, we study how the codifferentials in the moduli spaces deform into other nonequivalent codifferentials, which gives each moduli space a sort of topology.

On Deformations and Contractions of Lie Algebras

In this contributed presentation, we discuss and compare the mutually opposite procedures of deformations and contractions of Lie algebras. We suggest that with appropriate combinations of both procedures one may construct new Lie algebras. We first discuss low-dimensional Lie algebras and illustrate thereby that whereas for every contraction there exists a reverse deformation, the converse is not true in general. Also we note that some Lie algebras belonging to parameterized families are singled out by the irreversibility of deformations and contractions. After reminding that global deformations of the Witt, Virasoro, and affine Kac-Moody algebras allow one to retrieve Lie algebras of Krichever-Novikov type, we contract the latter to find new infinite dimensional Lie algebras.

Deformations of Four Dimensional Lie Algebras

We study the moduli space of four dimensional ordinary Lie algebras, and their versal deformations. Their classification is well known; our focus in this paper is on the deformations, which yield a picture of how the moduli space is assembled. Surprisingly, we get a nice geometric description of this moduli space essentially as an orbifold, with just a few exceptional points.
