Examples of Miniversal Deformations of Infinity Algebras

A classical problem in algebraic deformation theory is whether an infinitesimal deformation can be extended to a formal deformation. The answer to this question is usually given in terms of Massey powers. If all Massey powers of the cohomology class determined by the infinitesimal deformation vanish, then the deformation extends to a formal one. We consider another approach to this problem, by constructing a miniversal deformation of the algebra. One advantage of this approach is that it answers not only the question of existence, but gives a construction of an extension as well.

Cohomology of graded Lie algebras of maximal class

We compute the cohomology with trivial coefficients of two graded infinite-dimensional Lie algebras of maximal class, give explicit formulas for their representative cocycles. Also we discuss the relations with combinatorics and representation theory.

Global geometric deformations of current algebras as Krichever-Novikov type algebras

We construct algebraic-geometric families of genus one (i.e. elliptic) current and affine Lie algebras of Krichever-Novikov type. These families deform the classical current, respectively affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras. The construction is induced by the geometric process of degenerating the elliptic curve to singular cubics. If the finite-dimensional Lie algebra defining the infinite dimensional current algebra is simple then, even if restricted to local families, the constructed families are non-equivalent to the trivial family. In particular, we show that the current algebra is geometrically not rigid, despite its formal rigidity. This shows that in the infinite-dimensional Lie algebra case the relations between geometric deformations, formal deformations and Lie algebra two-cohomology are not that close as in the finite-dimensional case. The constructed families are e.g. of relevance in the global operator approach to the Wess-Zumino-Witten-Novikov models appearing in the quantization of Conformal Field Theory.

Extensions of L_infinity algebras of two even and one odd dimension

In this article we study extensions of Z_2-graded L_infinity algebras on a vector space of two even and one odd dimension. In particular, we determine all extensions of a super Lie algebra as an L_infinity algebra. Our convention on the parities is the opposite of the usual one, because we define our structures on the symmetric coalgebra of the parity reversion of a space.

Classification and versal deformations of L_\infinity algebras on a 2|1-dimensional space

This article explores \Z_2-graded L_\infinity algebra structures on a 2|1-dimensional vector space. The reader should note that our convention on the parities is the opposite of the usual one, because we define our structures on the symmetric coalgebra of the parity reversion of a space, so our 2|1-dimensional L_\infinity algebras correspond to the usual 1|2-dimensional algebras. We give a complete classification of all structures with a nonzero degree 1 term. We also classify all degree 2 codifferentials, which is the same as a classification of all 1|2-dimensional Z_2-graded Lie algebras. For each of these algebra structures, we calculate the cohomology and a miniversal deformation.

Strongly Homotopy Lie Algebras of One Even and Two Odd Dimensions

We classify strongly homotopy Lie algebras - also called L-infinity algebras - of one even and two odd dimensions, which are related to $2|1$-dimensional $Z_2$-graded Lie algebras. What makes this case interesting is that there are many nonequivalent L-infinity examples, in addition to the $Z_2$-graded Lie algebra (or superalgebra) structures, yet the moduli space is simple enough that we can give a complete classification up to equivalence.

Versal Deformations of Three Dimensional Lie Algebras as L-infinity Algebras

We consider versal deformations of 0|3-dimensional L-infinity algebras, which correspond precisely to ordinary (non-graded) three dimensional Lie algebras. The classification of such algebras over C is well known, although we shall give a derivation of this classification using an approach of treating them as L-infinity algebras. Because the symmetric algebra of a three dimensional odd vector space contains terms only of exterior degree less than or equal to three, the construction of versal deformations can be carried out completely. We give a characterization of the moduli space of Lie algebras using deformation theory as a guide to understanding the picture.

Global Deformations of the Witt Algebra of Krichever-Novikov Type

By considering non-trivial global deformations of the Witt (and the Virasoro) algebra given by geometric constructions it is shown that, despite their infinitesimal and formal rigidity, they are globally not rigid. This shows the need of a clear indication of the type of deformations considered. The families appearing are constructed as families of algebras of Krichever-Novikov type. They show up in a natural way in the global operator approach to the quantization of two-dimensional conformal field theory. In addition, a proof of the infinitesimal and formal rigidity of the Witt algebra is presented.

Examples of infinity and Lie algebras and their versal deformations

This article explores some simple examples of L-infinity algebras and the construction of miniversal deformations of these structures. Among other things, it is shown that there are two families of nonequivalent L-infinity structures on a 1|1 dimensional vector space, two of which are Lie algebra structures. The main purpose of this work is to provide a simple effective procedure for constructing miniversal deformations, using the examples to illustrate the general technique. The same method can be applied directly to construct versal deformations of Lie algebras.

Deformation Theory of Infinity Algebras

This work explores the deformation theory of algebraic structures in a very general setting. These structures include commutative, associative algebras, Lie algebras, and the infinity versions of these structures, the strongly homotopy associative and Lie algebras. In all these cases the algebra structure is determined by an element of a certain graded Lie algebra which plays the role of a differential on this algebra. We work out the deformation theory in terms of the Lie algebra of coderivations of an appropriate coalgebra structure and construct a universal infinitesimal deformation as well as a miniversal formal deformation. By working at this level of generality, the main ideas involved in deformation theory stand out more clearly.

Construction of Miniversal Deformations of Lie Algebras

We consider deformations of finite or infinite dimensional Lie algebras over a field of characteristic 0. There is substantial confusion in the literature if one tries to describe all the non-equivalent deformations of a given Lie algebra. It is known that there is in general no "universal" deformation of the Lie algebra L with a commutative algebra base A with the property that for any other deformation of L with base B there exists a unique homomorphism f: A -> B that induces an equivalent deformation. Thus one is led to seek a "miniversal" deformation. For a miniversal deformation such a homomorphism exists, but is unique only at the first level. If we consider deformations with base spec A, where A is a local algebra, then under some minor restrictions there exists a miniversal element. In this paper we give a construction of a miniversal deformation.

Singular deformations of Lie algebras on an example

The notion of singular one-parameter deformation of a Lie algebra is introduced. It is shown that the complex infinite-dimensional Lie algebra of polynomial vector fields in C with trivial 1-jet at the origin has such singular deformation.
