Twisted Frobenius extensions of graded superrings

We define twisted Frobenius extensions of graded superrings. We develop equivalent definitions in terms of bimodule isomorphisms, trace maps, bilinear forms, and dual sets of generators. The motivation for our study comes from categorification, where one is often interested in the adjointness properties of induction and restriction functors. We show that $A$ is a twisted Frobenius extension of $B$ if and only if induction of $B$-modules to $A$-modules is twisted shifted right adjoint to restriction of $A$-modules to $B$-modules. A large (non-exhaustive) class of examples is given by the fact that any time $A$ is a Frobenius graded superalgebra, $B$ is a graded subalgebra that is also a Frobenius graded superalgebra, and $A$ is projective as a left $B$-module, then $A$ is a twisted Frobenius extension of $B$.

Equivariant map superalgebras

Suppose a group $Γ$ acts on a scheme $X$ and a Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{g}$. The corresponding equivariant map superalgebra is the Lie superalgebra of equivariant regular maps from $X$ to $\mathfrak{g}$. We classify the irreducible finite dimensional modules for these superalgebras under the assumptions that the coordinate ring of $X$ is finitely generated, $Γ$ is finite abelian and acts freely on the rational points of $X$, and $\mathfrak{g}$ is a basic classical Lie superalgebra (or $\mathfrak{sl}(n,n)$, $n > 0$, if $Γ$ is trivial). We show that they are all (tensor products of) generalized evaluation modules and are parameterized by a certain set of equivariant finitely supported maps defined on $X$. Furthermore, in the case that the even part of $\mathfrak{g}$ is semisimple, we show that all such modules are in fact (tensor products of) evaluation modules. On the other hand, if the even part of $\mathfrak{g}$ is not semisimple (more generally, if $\mathfrak{g}$ is of type I), we introduce a natural generalization of Kac modules and show that all irreducible finite dimensional modules are quotients of these. As a special case, our results give the first classification of the irreducible finite dimensional modules for twisted loop superalgebras.

Towers of graded superalgebras categorify the twisted Heisenberg double

We show that the Grothendieck groups of the categories of finitely-generated graded supermodules and finitely-generated projective graded supermodules over a tower of graded superalgebras satisfying certain natural conditions give rise to twisted Hopf algebras that are twisted dual. Then, using induction and restriction functors coming from such towers, we obtain a categorification of the twisted Heisenberg double and its Fock space representation. We show that towers of wreath product algebras (in particular, the tower of Sergeev superalgebras) and the tower of nilcoxeter graded superalgebras satisfy our axioms. In the latter case, one obtains a categorification of the quantum Weyl algebra.

Twisted Heisenberg doubles

We introduce a twisted version of the Heisenberg double, constructed from a twisted Hopf algebra and a twisted Hopf pairing. We state a Stone--von Neumann type theorem for a natural Fock space representation of this twisted Heisenberg double and deduce the effect on the algebra of shifting the product and coproduct of the original twisted Hopf algebra. We conclude by showing that the quantum Weyl algebra, quantum Heisenberg algebras, and lattice Heisenberg algebras are all examples of the general construction.

A survey of Heisenberg categorification via graphical calculus

In this expository paper we present an overview of various graphical categorifications of the Heisenberg algebra and its Fock space representation. We begin with a discussion of "weak" categorifications via modules for Hecke algebras and "geometrizations" in terms of the cohomology of the Hilbert scheme. We then turn our attention to more recent "strong" categorifications involving planar diagrammatics and derived categories of coherent sheaves on Hilbert schemes.

Introduction to categorification

These are the notes for a two-week mini-course given at a winter school in January 2014 as part of the thematic semester New Directions in Lie Theory at the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques in Montréal. The goal of the course was to give an overview of the idea of categorification, with an emphasis on some examples where explicit computation is possible with minimal background. The notes begin with a very brief review of the representation theory of associative algebras, before introducing the concept of weak categorification with some simple examples. It then proceeds to a discussion of more sophisticated examples of categorification, including a weak categorification of the polynomial representation of the Weyl group and the Fock space representation of the Heisenberg algebra. The notes conclude with a discussion of strong categorification and a brief overview of some further directions in the field.

Extensions and block decompositions for finite-dimensional representations of equivariant map algebras

Suppose a finite group acts on a scheme $X$ and a finite-dimensional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. The associated equivariant map algebra is the Lie algebra of equivariant regular maps from $X$ to $\mathfrak{g}$. The irreducible finite-dimensional representations of these algebras were classified in previous work with P. Senesi, where it was shown that they are all tensor products of evaluation representations and one-dimensional representations. In the current paper, we describe the extensions between irreducible finite-dimensional representations of an equivariant map algebra in the case that $X$ is an affine scheme of finite type and $\mathfrak{g}$ is reductive. This allows us to also describe explicitly the blocks of the category of finite-dimensional representations in terms of spectral characters, whose definition we extend to this general setting. Applying our results to the case of generalized current algebras (the case where the group acting is trivial), we recover known results but with very different proofs. For (twisted) loop algebras, we recover known results on block decompositions (again with very different proofs) and new explicit formulas for extensions. Finally, specializing our results to the case of (twisted) multiloop algebras and generalized Onsager algebras yields previously unknown results on both extensions and block decompositions.

Hecke algebras, finite general linear groups, and Heisenberg categorification

We define a category of planar diagrams whose Grothendieck group contains an integral version of the infinite rank Heisenberg algebra, thus yielding a categorification of this algebra. Our category, which is a q-deformation of one defined by Khovanov, acts naturally on the categories of modules for Hecke algebras of type A and finite general linear groups. In this way, we obtain a categorification of the bosonic Fock space. We also develop the theory of parabolic induction and restriction functors for finite groups and prove general results on biadjointness and cyclicity in this setting.

Categorification and Heisenberg doubles arising from towers of algebras

The Grothendieck groups of the categories of finitely generated modules and finitely generated projective modules over a tower of algebras can be endowed with (co)algebra structures that, in many cases of interest, give rise to a dual pair of Hopf algebras. Moreover, given a dual pair of Hopf algebras, one can construct an algebra called the Heisenberg double, which is a generalization of the classical Heisenberg algebra. The aim of this paper is to study Heisenberg doubles arising from towers of algebras in this manner. First, we develop the basic representation theory of such Heisenberg doubles and show that if induction and restriction satisfy Mackey-like isomorphisms then the Fock space representation of the Heisenberg double has a natural categorification. This unifies the existing categorifications of the polynomial representation of the Weyl algebra and the Fock space representation of the Heisenberg algebra. Second, we develop in detail the theory applied to the tower of 0-Hecke algebras, obtaining new Heisenberg-like algebras that we call quasi-Heisenberg algebras. As an application of a generalized Stone--von Neumann Theorem, we give a new proof of the fact that the ring of quasisymmetric functions is free over the ring of symmetric functions.

Quiver grassmannians, quiver varieties and the preprojective algebra

Quivers play an important role in the representation theory of algebras, with a key ingredient being the path algebra and the preprojective algebra. Quiver grassmannians are varieties of submodules of a fixed module of the path or preprojective algebra. In the current paper, we study these objects in detail. We show that the quiver grassmannians corresponding to submodules of certain injective modules are homeomorphic to the lagrangian quiver varieties of Nakajima which have been well studied in the context of geometric representation theory. We then refine this result by finding quiver grassmannians which are homeomorphic to the Demazure quiver varieties introduced by the first author, and others which are homeomorphic to the graded/cyclic quiver varieties defined by Nakajima. The Demazure quiver grassmannians allow us to describe injective objects in the category of locally nilpotent modules of the preprojective algebra. We conclude by relating our construction to a similar one of Lusztig using projectives in place of injectives.

Formal Hecke algebras and algebraic oriented cohomology theories

In the present paper we generalize the construction of the nil Hecke ring of Kostant-Kumar to the context of an arbitrary algebraic oriented cohomology theory of Levine-Morel and Panin-Smirnov, e.g. to Chow groups, Grothendieck's K_0, connective K-theory, elliptic cohomology, and algebraic cobordism. The resulting object, which we call a formal (affine) Demazure algebra, is parameterized by a one-dimensional commutative formal group law and has the following important property: specialization to the additive and multiplicative periodic formal group laws yields completions of the nil Hecke and the 0-Hecke rings respectively. We also introduce a deformed version of the formal (affine) Demazure algebra, which we call a formal (affine) Hecke algebra. We show that the specialization of the formal (affine) Hecke algebra to the additive and multiplicative periodic formal group laws gives completions of the degenerate (affine) Hecke algebra and the usual (affine) Hecke algebra respectively. We show that all formal affine Demazure algebras (and all formal affine Hecke algebras) become isomorphic over certain coefficient rings, proving an analogue of a result of Lusztig.

Global Weyl modules for equivariant map algebras

Equivariant map algebras are Lie algebras of algebraic maps from a scheme (or algebraic variety) to a target finite-dimensional Lie algebra (in the case of the current paper, we assume the latter is a simple Lie algebra) that are equivariant with respect to the action of a finite group. In the first part of this paper, we define global Weyl modules for equivariant map algebras satisfying a mild assumption. We then identify a commutative algebra A that acts naturally on the global Weyl modules, which leads to a Weyl functor from the category of A-modules to the category of modules for the equivariant map algebra in question. These definitions extend the ones previously given for generalized current algebras (i.e. untwisted map algebras) and twisted loop algebras. In the second part of the paper, we restrict our attention to equivariant map algebras where the group involved is abelian, acts on the target Lie algebra by diagram automorphisms, and freely on (the set of rational points of) the scheme. Under these additional assumptions, we prove that A is finitely generated and the global Weyl module is a finitely generated A-module. We also define local Weyl modules via the Weyl functor and prove that these coincide with the local Weyl modules defined directly in a previous paper. Finally, we show that A is the algebra of coinvariants of the analogous algebra in the untwisted case.

Classification of irreducible quasifinite modules over map Virasoro algebras

We give a complete classification of the irreducible quasifinite modules for algebras of the form Vir \otimes A, where Vir is the Virasoro algebra and A is a Noetherian commutative associative unital algebra over the complex numbers. It is shown that all such modules are tensor products of generalized evaluation modules. We also give an explicit sufficient condition for a Verma module of Vir \otimes A to be reducible. In the case that A is an infinite-dimensional integral domain, this condition is also necessary.

Irreducible finite-dimensional representations of equivariant map algebras

Suppose a finite group acts on a scheme X and a finite-dimensional Lie algebra g. The corresponding equivariant map algebra is the Lie algebra M of equivariant regular maps from X to g. We classify the irreducible finite-dimensional representations of these algebras. In particular, we show that all such representations are tensor products of evaluation representations and one-dimensional representations, and we establish conditions ensuring that they are all evaluation representations. For example, this is always the case if M is perfect. Our results can be applied to multiloop algebras, current algebras, the Onsager algebra, and the tetrahedron algebra. Doing so, we easily recover the known classifications of irreducible finite-dimensional representations of these algebras. Moreover, we obtain previously unknown classifications of irreducible finite-dimensional representations of other types of equivariant map algebras, such as the generalized Onsager algebra.

Local Weyl modules for equivariant map algebras with free abelian group actions

Suppose a finite group acts on a scheme X and a finite-dimensional Lie algebra g. The associated equivariant map algebra is the Lie algebra of equivariant regular maps from X to g. Examples include generalized current algebras and (twisted) multiloop algebras. Local Weyl modules play an important role in the theory of finite-dimensional representations of loop algebras and quantum affine algebras. In the current paper, we extend the definition of local Weyl modules (previously defined only for generalized current algebras and twisted loop algebras) to the setting of equivariant map algebras where g is semisimple, X is affine of finite type, and the group is abelian and acts freely on X. We do so by defining twisting and untwisting functors, which are isomorphisms between certain categories of representations of equivariant map algebras and their untwisted analogues. We also show that other properties of local Weyl modules (e.g. their characterization by homological properties and a tensor product property) extend to the more general setting considered in the current paper.

Lectures on geometric realizations of crystals

These are notes for a lecture series given at the Fields Institute Summer School in Geometric Representation Theory and Extended Affine Lie Algebras, held at the University of Ottawa in June 2009. We give an introduction to the geometric realization of crystal graphs via the quiver varieties of Lusztig and Nakajima. The emphasis is on motivating the constructions through concrete examples. The relation between the geometric construction of crystals and combinatorial realizations using Young tableaux is also discussed.

Vertex operators and the geometry of moduli spaces of framed torsion-free sheaves

We define complexes of vector bundles on products of moduli spaces of framed rank r torsion-free sheaves on the complex projective plane. The top non-vanishing Chern classes of the cohomology of these complexes yield actions of the r-colored Heisenberg and Clifford algebras on the equivariant cohomology of the moduli spaces. In this way we obtain a geometric realization of the boson-fermion correspondence and related vertex operators.
