On two geometric constructions of U(sl_n) and its representations

Ginzburg and Nakajima have given two different geometric constructions of quotients of the universal enveloping algebra of sl_n and its irreducible finite-dimensional highest weight representations using the convolution product in the Borel-Moore homology of flag varieties and quiver varieties respectively. The purpose of this paper is to explain the precise relationship between the two constructions. In particular, we show that while the two yield different quotients of the universal enveloping algebra, they produce the same representations and the natural bases which arise in both constructions are the same. We also examine how this relationship can be used to translate the crystal structure on irreducible components of quiver varieties, defined by Kashiwara and Saito, to a crystal structure on the varieties appearing in Ginzburg's construction, thus recovering results of Malkin.

Braided and coboundary monoidal categories

In this expository paper, we discuss and compare the notions of braided and coboundary monoidal categories. Coboundary monoidal categories are analogues of braided monoidal categories in which the role of the braid group is replaced by the cactus group. We focus on the categories of representations of quantum groups and crystals and explain how while the former is a braided monoidal category, this structure does not pass to the crystal limit. However, the categories of representations of quantum groups of finite type also possess the structure of a coboundary category which does behave well in the crystal limit. We explain this construction and also a recent interpretation of the coboundary structure using quiver varieties. This geometric viewpoint allows one to show that the category of crystals is in fact a coboundary monoidal category for arbitrary symmetrizable Kac-Moody type.

Crystals, quiver varieties and coboundary categories for Kac-Moody algebras

Henriques and Kamnitzer have defined a commutor for the category of crystals of a finite-dimensional complex reductive Lie algebra that gives it the structure of a coboundary category (somewhat analogous to a braided monoidal category). Kamnitzer and Tingley then gave an alternative definition of the crystal commutor, using Kashiwara's involution on Verma crystals, that generalizes to the setting of symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras. In the current paper, we give a geometric interpretation of the crystal commutor using quiver varieties. Equipped with this interpretation we show that the commutor endows the category of crystals of a symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebra with the structure of a coboundary category, answering in the affirmative a question of Kamnitzer and Tingley.

Quiver varieties and Demazure modules

Using subvarieties, which we call Demazure quiver varieties, of the quiver varieties of Nakajima, we give a geometric realization of Demazure modules of Kac-Moody algebras with symmetric Cartan data. We give a natural geometric characterization of the extremal weights of a representation and show that Lusztig's semicanonical basis is compatible with the filtration of a representation by Demazure modules. For the case of affine sl_2, we give a characterization of the Demazure quiver variety in terms of a nilpotency condition on quiver representations and an explicit combinatorial description of the Demazure crystal in terms of Young pyramids.

Quivers and the Euclidean group

We show that the category of representations of the Euclidean group of orientation-preserving isometries of two-dimensional Euclidean space is equivalent to the category of representations of the preprojective algebra of infinite type A. We also consider the moduli space of representations of the Euclidean group along with a set of generators. We show that these moduli spaces are quiver varieties of the type considered by Nakajima. Using these identifications, we prove various results about the representation theory of the Euclidean group. In particular, we prove it is of wild representation type but that if we impose certain restrictions on weight decompositions, we obtain only a finite number of indecomposable representations.

A geometric boson-fermion correspondence

The fixed points of a natural torus action on the Hilbert schemes of points in C^2 are quiver varieties of infinite type A. The equivariant cohomology of the Hilbert schemes and quiver varieties can be given the structure of bosonic and fermionic Fock spaces respectively. Then the localization theorem, which relates the equivariant cohomology of a space with that of its fixed point set, yields a geometric realization of the important boson-fermion correspondence.

Geometric and Combinatorial Realizations of Crystals of Enveloping Algebras

Kashiwara and Saito have defined a crystal structure on the set of irreducible components of Lusztig's quiver varieties. This gives a geometric realization of the crystal graph of the lower half of the quantum group associated to a simply-laced Kac-Moody algebra. Using an enumeration of the irreducible components of Lusztig's quiver varieties in finite and affine type A by combinatorial data, we compute the geometrically defined crystal structure in terms of this combinatorics. We conclude by comparing the combinatorial realization of the crystal graph thus obtained with other combinatorial models involving Young tableaux and Young walls.

Geometric and combinatorial realizations of crystal graphs

For irreducible integrable highest weight modules of the finite and affine Lie algebras of type A and D, we define an isomorphism between the geometric realization of the crystal graphs in terms of irreducible components of Nakajima quiver varieties and the combinatorial realizations in terms of Young tableaux and Young walls. For affine type A, we extend the Young wall construction to arbitrary level, describing a combinatorial realization of the crystals in terms of new objects which we call Young pyramids.

A geometric construction of crystal graphs using quiver varieties: Extension to the non-simply laced case

We consider a generalization of the quiver varieties of Lusztig and Nakajima to the case of all symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebras. To deal with the non-simply laced case one considers admissible automorphisms of a quiver and the irreducible components of the quiver varieties fixed by this automorphism. We define a crystal structure on these irreducible components and show that the crystals obtained are isomorphic to those associated to the crystal bases of the lower half of the universal enveloping algebra and the irreducible highest weight representations of the non-simply laced Kac-Moody Lie algebra. As an application, we realize the crystal of the spin representation of so_{2n+1} on the set of self-conjugate Young diagrams that fit inside an n by n box.

A Geometric Realization of Spin Representations and Young diagrams from Quiver Varieties

Applying the techniques of an earlier paper with Frenkel, we develop a geometric realization of spin representations and Clifford algebras. In doing so, we give an explicit parametrization of the irreducible components of Nakajima varieties of type D in terms of Young diagrams. We explicity compute the geometric action of the Lie algebra and are able to extend the geometric action to the entire Clifford algebra used in the classical construction of the spin representations.

Bases of representations of type A affine Lie algebras via quiver varieties and statistical mechanics

We relate two apparently different bases in the representations of affine Lie algebras of type A: one arising from statistical mechanics, the other from gauge theory. We show that the two are governed by the same combinatorics and therefore can be viewed as identical. In particular, we are able to give an alternative and much simpler geometric proof of a result of E. Date, M. Jimbo, A. Kuniba, T. Miwa and M. Okado on the construction of bases of affine Lie algebra representations. At the same time, we give a simple parametrization of the irreducible components of Nakajima quiver varieties associated to infinite and cyclic quivers. We also define new varieties whose irreducible components are in one-to-one correspondence with bases of the highest weight representations of affine gl_{n+1}.

Quiver varieties and fusion products for sl_2

We construct the fusion product of finite-dimensional sl_2-modules in the homology of (or in the space of constructible functions on) a certain subvariety L_l(w_1, ..., w_r) of Nakajima's tensor product variety L(w_1,..., w_r). We also give a combinatorial description of the irreducible components of this subvariety using the notions of graphical calculus and crossingless matches for sl_2.

The Tensor Product of Representations of U_q(sl_2) Via Quivers

Using the tensor product variety introduced by Malkin and Nakajima, the complete structure of the tensor product of a finite number of integrable highest weight modules of U_q(sl_2) is recovered. In particular, the elementary basis, Lusztig's canonical basis, and the basis adapted to the decomposition of the tensor product into simple modules are all exhibited as distiguished elements of certain spaces of invariant functions on the tensor product variety. For the latter two bases, these distinguished elements are closely related to the irreducible components of the tensor product variety. The space of intertwiners is also interpreted geometrically.

Magnon Wave-function and Impurity Effects in S=1 Antiferromagnetic Chains: A Large-n Approach

A large-n approximation to the S=1 antiferromagnetic chain, using the symmetric tensor representation and its conjugate, is developed to order 1/n in order to calculate the magnon wave-function and to study the effect of modifying the exchange coupling from J to J' on a single link. It is shown that a magnon boundstate exists below the Haldane gap for arbitrarily small negative J'-J but only above a certain critical value of J'-J for positive values. In the former case the binding energy vanishes as the square of (J-J').
