Joint Scattering Environment Sensing and Channel Estimation for Integrated Sensing and Communication

This paper considers an integrated sensing and communication system, where some radar targets also serve as communication scatterers. A location domain channel modeling method is proposed based on the position of targets and scatterers in the scattering environment, and the resulting radar and communication channels exhibit a partially common sparsity. By exploiting this, we propose a joint scattering environment sensing and channel estimation scheme to enhance the target/scatterer localization and channel estimation performance simultaneously. Specifically, the base station (BS) first transmits downlink pilots to sense the targets in the scattering environment. Then the user transmits uplink pilots to estimate the communication channel. Finally, joint scattering environment sensing and channel estimation are performed at the BS based on the reflected downlink pilot signal and received uplink pilot signal. A message passing based algorithm is designed by combining the turbo approach and the expectation maximization method. The advantages of our proposed scheme are verified in the simulations.

Fundamental Limits and Optimization of Multiband Sensing

Multiband sensing is a promising technology that utilizes multiple non-contiguous frequency bands to achieve high-resolution target sensing. In this paper, we investigate the fundamental limits and optimization of multiband sensing, focusing on the fundamental limits associated with time delay. We first derive a Fisher information matrix (FIM) with a compact form using the Dirichlet kernel and then derive a closed-form expression of the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for the delay separation in a simplified case to reveal useful insights. Then, a metric called the statistical resolution limit (SRL) that provides a resolution limit is employed to investigate the fundamental limits of delay resolution. The fundamental limits of delay estimation are also investigated based on the CRB and Ziv-Zakai bound (ZZB). Based on the above derived fundamental limits, numerical results are presented to analyze the effect of frequency band apertures and phase distortions on the performance limits of the multiband sensing systems. We formulate an optimization problem to find the optimal system configuration in multiband sensing systems with the objective of minimizing the delay SRL. To solve this non-convex constrained problem, we propose an efficient alternating optimization (AO) algorithm which iteratively optimizes the variables using successive convex approximation (SCA) and one-dimensional search. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Long-Document Cross-Lingual Summarization

Cross-Lingual Summarization (CLS) aims at generating summaries in one language for the given documents in another language. CLS has attracted wide research attention due to its practical significance in the multi-lingual world. Though great contributions have been made, existing CLS works typically focus on short documents, such as news articles, short dialogues and guides. Different from these short texts, long documents such as academic articles and business reports usually discuss complicated subjects and consist of thousands of words, making them non-trivial to process and summarize. To promote CLS research on long documents, we construct Perseus, the first long-document CLS dataset which collects about 94K Chinese scientific documents paired with English summaries. The average length of documents in Perseus is more than two thousand tokens. As a preliminary study on long-document CLS, we build and evaluate various CLS baselines, including pipeline and end-to-end methods. Experimental results on Perseus show the superiority of the end-to-end baseline, outperforming the strong pipeline models equipped with sophisticated machine translation systems. Furthermore, to provide a deeper understanding, we manually analyze the model outputs and discuss specific challenges faced by current approaches. We hope that our work could benchmark long-document CLS and benefit future studies.

Latency Minimization for mmWave D2D Mobile Edge Computing Systems: Joint Task Allocation and Hybrid Beamforming Design

Mobile edge computing (MEC) and millimeter wave (mmWave) communications are capable of significantly reducing the network's delay and enhancing its capacity. In this paper we investigate a mmWave and device-to-device (D2D) assisted MEC system, in which user A carries out some computational tasks and shares the results with user B with the aid of a base station (BS). We propose a novel two-timescale joint hybrid beamforming and task allocation algorithm to reduce the system latency whilst cut down the required signaling overhead. Specifically, the high-dimensional analog beamforming matrices are updated in a frame-based manner based on the channel state information (CSI) samples, where each frame consists of a number of time slots, while the low-dimensional digital beamforming matrices and the offloading ratio are optimized more frequently relied on the low-dimensional effective channel matrices in each time slot. A stochastic successive convex approximation (SSCA) based algorithm is developed to design the long-term analog beamforming matrices. As for the short-term variables, the digital beamforming matrices are optimized relying on the innovative penalty-concave convex procedure (penalty-CCCP) for handling the mmWave non-linear transmit power constraint, and the offloading ratio can be obtained via the derived closed-form solution. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by comparing the benchmarks.

RT-KGD: Relation Transition Aware Knowledge-Grounded Dialogue Generation

Grounding dialogue system with external knowledge is a promising way to improve the quality of responses. Most existing works adopt knowledge graphs (KGs) as the external resources, paying attention to the contribution of entities in the last utterance of the dialogue for context understanding and response generation. Nevertheless, the correlations between knowledge implied in the multi-turn context and the transition regularities between relations in KGs are under-explored. To this end, we propose a Relation Transition aware Knowledge-Grounded Dialogue Generation model (RT-KGD). Specifically, inspired by the latent logic of human conversation, our model integrates dialogue-level relation transition regularities with turn-level entity semantic information. In this manner, the interaction between knowledge is considered to produce abundant clues for predicting the appropriate knowledge and generating coherent responses. The experimental results on both automatic evaluation and manual evaluation indicate that our model outperforms state-of-the-art baselines.

PH-Net: Parallelepiped Microstructure Homogenization via 3D Convolutional Neural Networks

Microstructures are attracting academic and industrial interests with the rapid development of additive manufacturing. The numerical homogenization method has been well studied for analyzing mechanical behaviors of microstructures; however, it is too time-consuming to be applied to online computing or applications requiring high-frequency calling, e.g., topology optimization. Data-driven homogenization methods emerge as a more efficient choice but limit the microstructures into a cubic shape, which are infeasible to the periodic microstructures with a more general shape, e.g., parallelepiped. This paper introduces a fine-designed 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) for fast homogenization of parallel-shaped microstructures, named PH-Net. Superior to existing data-driven methods, PH-Net predicts the local displacements of microstructures under specified macroscope strains instead of direct homogeneous material, motivating us to present a label-free loss function based on minimal potential energy. For dataset construction, we introduce a shape-material transformation and voxel-material tensor to encode microstructure type, base material and boundary shape together as the input of PH-Net, such that it is CNN-friendly and enhances PH-Net on generalization in terms of microstructure type, base material, and boundary shape. PH-Net predicts homogenized properties with hundreds of acceleration compared to the numerical homogenization method and even supports online computing. Moreover, it does not require a labeled dataset and thus is much faster than current deep learning methods in training processing. Benefiting from predicting local displacement, PH-Net provides both homogeneous material properties and microscopic mechanical properties, e.g., strain and stress distribution, yield strength, etc. We design a group of physical experiments and verify the prediction accuracy of PH-Net.

Multiband Delay Estimation for Localization Using a Two-Stage Global Estimation Scheme

The time of arrival (TOA)-based localization techniques, which need to estimate the delay of the line-of-sight (LoS) path, have been widely employed in location-aware networks. To achieve a high-accuracy delay estimation, a number of multiband-based algorithms have been proposed recently, which exploit the channel state information (CSI) measurements over multiple non-contiguous frequency bands. However, to the best of our knowledge, there still lacks an efficient scheme that fully exploits the multiband gains when the phase distortion factors caused by hardware imperfections are considered, due to that the associated multi-parameter estimation problem contains many local optimums and the existing algorithms can easily get stuck in a "bad" local optimum. To address these issues, we propose a novel two-stage global estimation (TSGE) scheme for multiband delay estimation. In the coarse stage, we exploit the group sparsity structure of the multiband channel and propose a Turbo Bayesian inference (Turbo-BI) algorithm to achieve a good initial delay estimation based on a coarse signal model, which is transformed from the original multiband signal model by absorbing the carrier frequency terms. The estimation problem derived from the coarse signal model contains less local optimums and thus a more stable estimation can be achieved than directly using the original signal model. Then in the refined stage, with the help of coarse estimation results to narrow down the search range, we perform a global delay estimation using a particle swarm optimization-least square (PSO-LS) algorithm based on a refined multiband signal model to exploit the multiband gains to further improve the estimation accuracy. Simulation results show that the proposed TSGE significantly outperforms the benchmarks with comparative computational complexity.

Information-Theoretic Limits of Integrated Sensing and Communication with Correlated Sensing and Channel States for Vehicular Networks

In connected vehicular networks, it is vital to have vehicular nodes that are capable of sensing about surrounding environments and exchanging messages with each other for automating and coordinating purpose. Towards this end, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), combining both sensing and communication systems to jointly utilize their resources and to pursue mutual benefits, emerges as a new cost-effective solution. In ISAC, the hardware and spectrum co-sharing leads to a fundamental tradeoff between sensing and communication performance, which is not well understood except for very simple cases with the same sensing and channel states, and perfect channel state information at the receiver (CSIR). In this paper, a general point-to-point ISAC model is proposed to account for the scenarios that the sensing state is different from but correlated with the channel state, and the CSIR is not necessarily perfect. For the model considered, the optimal tradeoff is characterized by a capacity-distortion function that quantifies the best communication rate for a given sensing distortion constraint requirement. An iterative algorithm is proposed to compute such tradeoff, and a few non-trivial examples are constructed to demonstrate the benefits of ISAC as compared to the separation-based approach.

Channel Tracking and Prediction for IRS-aided Wireless Communications

For intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided wireless communications, channel estimation is essential and usually requires excessive channel training overhead when the number of IRS reflecting elements is large. The acquisition of accurate channel state information (CSI) becomes more challenging when the channel is not quasi-static due to the mobility of the transmitter and/or receiver. In this work, we study an IRS-aided wireless communication system with a time-varying channel model and propose an innovative two-stage transmission protocol. In the first stage, we send pilot symbols and track the direct/reflected channels based on the received signal, and then data signals are transmitted. In the second stage, instead of sending pilot symbols first, we directly predict the direct/reflected channels and all the time slots are used for data transmission. Based on the proposed transmission protocol, we propose a two-stage channel tracking and prediction (2SCTP) scheme to obtain the direct and reflected channels with low channel training overhead, which is achieved by exploiting the temporal correlation of the time-varying channels. Specifically, we first consider a special case where the IRS-access point (AP) channel is assumed to be static, for which a Kalman filter (KF)-based algorithm and a long short-term memory (LSTM)-based neural network are proposed for channel tracking and prediction, respectively. Then, for the more general case where the IRS-AP, user-IRS and user-AP channels are all assumed to be time-varying, we present a generalized KF (GKF)-based channel tracking algorithm, where proper approximations are employed to handle the underlying non-Gaussian random variables. Numerical simulations are provided to verify the effectiveness of our proposed transmission protocol and channel tracking/prediction algorithms as compared to existing ones.

Joint Pilot Optimization, Target Detection and Channel Estimation for Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

Radar sensing will be integrated into the 6G communication system to support various applications. In this integrated sensing and communication system, a radar target may also be a communication channel scatterer. In this case, the radar and communication channels exhibit certain joint burst sparsity. We propose a two-stage joint pilot optimization, target detection and channel estimation scheme to exploit such joint burst sparsity and pilot beamforming gain to enhance detection/estimation performance. In Stage 1, the base station (BS) sends downlink pilots (DP) for initial target search, and the user sends uplink pilots (UP) for channel estimation. Then the BS performs joint target detection and channel estimation based on the reflected DP and received UP signals. In Stage 2, the BS exploits the prior information obtained in Stage 1 to optimize the DP signal to achieve beamforming gain and further refine the performance. A Turbo Sparse Bayesian inference algorithm is proposed for joint target detection and channel estimation in both stages. The pilot optimization problem in Stage 2 is a semi-definite programming with rank-1 constraints. By replacing the rank-1 constraint with a tight and smooth approximation, we propose an efficient pilot optimization algorithm based on the majorization-minimization method. Simulations verify the advantages of the proposed scheme.

Incorporating Commonsense Knowledge into Story Ending Generation via Heterogeneous Graph Networks

Story ending generation is an interesting and challenging task, which aims to generate a coherent and reasonable ending given a story context. The key challenges of the task lie in how to comprehend the story context sufficiently and handle the implicit knowledge behind story clues effectively, which are still under-explored by previous work. In this paper, we propose a Story Heterogeneous Graph Network (SHGN) to explicitly model both the information of story context at different granularity levels and the multi-grained interactive relations among them. In detail, we consider commonsense knowledge, words and sentences as three types of nodes. To aggregate non-local information, a global node is also introduced. Given this heterogeneous graph network, the node representations are updated through graph propagation, which adequately utilizes commonsense knowledge to facilitate story comprehension. Moreover, we design two auxiliary tasks to implicitly capture the sentiment trend and key events lie in the context. The auxiliary tasks are jointly optimized with the primary story ending generation task in a multi-task learning strategy. Extensive experiments on the ROCStories Corpus show that the developed model achieves new state-of-the-art performances. Human study further demonstrates that our model generates more reasonable story endings.

Knowledge Enhanced Sports Game Summarization

Sports game summarization aims at generating sports news from live commentaries. However, existing datasets are all constructed through automated collection and cleaning processes, resulting in a lot of noise. Besides, current works neglect the knowledge gap between live commentaries and sports news, which limits the performance of sports game summarization. In this paper, we introduce K-SportsSum, a new dataset with two characteristics: (1) K-SportsSum collects a large amount of data from massive games. It has 7,854 commentary-news pairs. To improve the quality, K-SportsSum employs a manual cleaning process; (2) Different from existing datasets, to narrow the knowledge gap, K-SportsSum further provides a large-scale knowledge corpus that contains the information of 523 sports teams and 14,724 sports players. Additionally, we also introduce a knowledge-enhanced summarizer that utilizes both live commentaries and the knowledge to generate sports news. Extensive experiments on K-SportsSum and SportsSum datasets show that our model achieves new state-of-the-art performances. Qualitative analysis and human study further verify that our model generates more informative sports news.

Successive Convex Approximation Based Off-Policy Optimization for Constrained Reinforcement Learning

We propose a successive convex approximation based off-policy optimization (SCAOPO) algorithm to solve the general constrained reinforcement learning problem, which is formulated as a constrained Markov decision process (CMDP) in the context of average cost. The SCAOPO is based on solving a sequence of convex objective/feasibility optimization problems obtained by replacing the objective and constraint functions in the original problems with convex surrogate functions. At each iteration, the convex surrogate problem can be efficiently solved by Lagrange dual method even the policy is parameterized by a high-dimensional function. Moreover, the SCAOPO enables to reuse old experiences from previous updates, thereby significantly reducing the implementation cost when deployed in the real-world engineering systems that need to online learn the environment. In spite of the time-varying state distribution and the stochastic bias incurred by the off-policy learning, the SCAOPO with a feasible initial point can still provably converge to a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) point of the original problem almost surely.

Two-Stage Stochastic Optimization via Primal-Dual Decomposition and Deep Unrolling

We consider a two-stage stochastic optimization problem, in which a long-term optimization variable is coupled with a set of short-term optimization variables in both objective and constraint functions. Despite that two-stage stochastic optimization plays a critical role in various engineering and scientific applications, there still lack efficient algorithms, especially when the long-term and short-term variables are coupled in the constraints. To overcome the challenge caused by tightly coupled stochastic constraints, we first establish a two-stage primal-dual decomposition (PDD) method to decompose the two-stage problem into a long-term problem and a family of short-term subproblems. Then we propose a PDD-based stochastic successive convex approximation (PDD-SSCA) algorithmic framework to find KKT solutions for two-stage stochastic optimization problems. At each iteration, PDD-SSCA first runs a short-term sub-algorithm to find stationary points of the short-term subproblems associated with a mini-batch of the state samples. Then it constructs a convex surrogate for the long-term problem based on the deep unrolling of the short-term sub-algorithm and the back propagation method. Finally, the optimal solution of the convex surrogate problem is solved to generate the next iterate. We establish the almost sure convergence of PDD-SSCA and customize the algorithmic framework to solve two important application problems. Simulations show that PDD-SSCA can achieve superior performance over existing solutions.

A Survey on Fundamental Limits of Integrated Sensing and Communication

The integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), in which the sensing and communication share the same frequency band and hardware, has emerged as a key technology in future wireless systems. Early works on ISAC have been focused on the design, analysis and optimization of practical ISAC technologies for various ISAC systems. While this line of works are necessary, it is equally important to study the fundamental limits of ISAC in order to understand the gap between the current state-of-the-art technologies and the performance limits, and provide useful insights and guidance for the development of better ISAC technologies that can approach the performance limits. In this paper, we aim to provide a comprehensive survey for the current research progress on the fundamental limits of ISAC. Particularly, we first propose a systematic classification method for both traditional radio sensing (such as radar sensing and wireless localization) and ISAC so that they can be naturally incorporated into a unified framework. Then we summarize the major performance metrics and bounds used in sensing, communications and ISAC, respectively. After that, we present the current research progresses on fundamental limits of each class of the traditional sensing and ISAC systems. Finally, the open problems and future research directions are discussed.

Two-timescale Beamforming Optimization for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided Multiuser Communication with QoS Constraints

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an emerging technology that is able to reconfigure the wireless channel via tunable passive signal reflection and thereby enhance the spectral and energy efficiency of wireless networks cost-effectively. In this paper, we study an IRS-aided multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) wireless system and adopt the two-timescale (TTS) transmission to reduce the signal processing complexity and channel training overhead as compared to the existing schemes based on the instantaneous channel state information (I-CSI), and at the same time, exploit the multiuser channel diversity in transmission scheduling. Specifically, the long-term passive beamforming is designed based on the statistical CSI (S-CSI) of all links, while the short-term active beamforming is designed to cater to the I-CSI of all users' reconfigured channels with optimized IRS phase shifts. We aim to minimize the average transmit power at the access point (AP), subject to the users' individual quality of service (QoS) constraints. The formulated stochastic optimization problem is non-convex and difficult to solve since the long-term and short-term design variables are complicatedly coupled in the QoS constraints. To tackle this problem, we propose an efficient algorithm, called the primal-dual decomposition based TTS joint active and passive beamforming (PDD-TJAPB), where the original problem is decomposed into a long-term problem and a family of short-term problems, and the deep unfolding technique is employed to extract gradient information from the short-term problems to construct a convex surrogate problem for the long-term problem. The proposed algorithm is proved to converge to a stationary solution of the original problem almost surely. Simulation results are presented which demonstrate the advantages and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm as compared to benchmark schemes.

Outage-Constrained Robust Beamforming for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided Wireless Communication

In intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided wireless communication systems, channel state information (CSI) is crucial to achieve its promising passive beamforming gains. However, CSI errors are inevitable in practice and generally correlated over the IRS reflecting elements due to the limited training with discrete phase shifts, which degrade the data transmission rate and reliability. In this paper, we focus on investigating the effect of CSI errors to the outage performance in an IRS-aided multiuser downlink communication system. Specifically, we aim to jointly optimize the active transmit precoding vectors at the access point (AP) and passive discrete phase shifts at the IRS to minimize the AP's transmit power, subject to the constraints on the maximum CSI-error induced outage probability for the users. First, we consider the single-user case and derive the user's outage probability in terms of the mean signal power (MSP) and variance of the received signal at the user. Since there is a trade-off in tuning these two parameters to minimize the outage probability, we propose to maximize their weighted sum with the optimal weight found by one-dimensional search. Then, for the general multiuser case, since the users' outage probabilities are difficult to obtain in closed-form due to the inter-user interference, we propose a novel constrained stochastic successive convex approximation (CSSCA) algorithm, which replaces the non-convex outage probability constraints with properly designed convex surrogate approximations. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed robust beamfoming algorithms and show their significant performance improvement over various benchmark schemes.

Joint User Scheduling and Resource Allocation for Millimeter Wave Systems Relying on Adaptive-Resolution ADCs

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems using adaptive-resolution analog-to-digital converters (RADCs) have recently drawn considerable interests from the research community as benefit of their high energy efficiency and low implementation cost. In this paper, we focus on the mmWave uplink using RADCs and investigate the joint user scheduling and resource allocation problem. Specifically, we seek to maximize the system throughput of the scheduled users by jointly optimizing their transmit power level and hybrid combiners as well as the number of quantization bits, subject to practical constraints. By relying on fractional programming (FP) techniques, we first covert this problem into a form amenable to optimization and exploit the specific structures in its solutions with the aid of the so-called Ky Fan n-norm. Then, the resultant optimization problem is solved using a penalty block successive concave approximation (P-BSCA) algorithm. Our numerical results reveal that the proposed algorithm substantially enhances the throughput of the scheduled users compared to the state-of-theart benchmark schemes and provides more flexible and efficient resource allocation control.
