Optimal Hierarchical Radio Resource Management for HetNets with Flexible Backhaul

Providing backhaul connectivity for macro and pico base stations (BSs) constitutes a significant share of infrastructure costs in future heterogeneous networks (HetNets). To address this issue, the emerging idea of flexible backhaul is proposed. Under this architecture, not all the pico BSs are connected to the backhaul, resulting in a significant reduction in the infrastructure costs. In this regard, pico BSs without backhaul connectivity need to communicate with their nearby BSs in order to have indirect accessibility to the backhaul. This makes the radio resource management (RRM) in such networks more complex and challenging. In this paper, we address the problem of cross-layer RRM in HetNets with flexible backhaul. We formulate this problem as a two-timescale non-convex stochastic optimization which jointly optimizes flow control, routing, interference mitigation and link scheduling in order to maximize a generic network utility. By exploiting a hidden convexity of this non-convex problem, we propose an iterative algorithm which converges to the global optimal solution. The proposed algorithm benefits from low complexity and low signalling, which makes it scalable. Moreover, due to the proposed two-timescale design, it is robust to the backhaul signalling latency as well. Simulation results demonstrate the significant performance gain of the proposed solution over various baselines.

Stochastic Transceiver Optimization in Multi-Tags Symbiotic Radio Systems

Symbiotic radio (SR) is emerging as a spectrum- and energy-efficient communication paradigm for future passive Internet-of-things (IoT), where some single-antenna backscatter devices, referred to as Tags, are parasitic in an active primary transmission. The primary transceiver is designed to assist both direct-link (DL) and backscatter-link (BL) communication. In multi-tags SR systems, the transceiver designs become much more complicated due to the presence of DL and inter-Tag interference, which further poses new challenges to the availability and reliability of DL and BL transmission. To overcome these challenges, we formulate the stochastic optimization of transceiver design as the general network utility maximization problem (GUMP). The resultant problem is a stochastic multiple-ratio fractional non-convex problem, and consequently challenging to solve. By leveraging some fractional programming techniques, we tailor a surrogate function with the specific structure and subsequently develop a batch stochastic parallel decomposition (BSPD) algorithm, which is shown to converge to stationary solutions of the GNUMP. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by numerical examples in terms of the achieved system throughput.

Energy Efficiency Optimization for Millimeter Wave System with Resolution-Adaptive ADCs

This letter investigates the uplink of a multi-user millimeter wave (mmWave) system, where the base station (BS) is equipped with a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) array and resolution-adaptive analog-to-digital converters (RADCs). Although employing massive MIMO at the BS can significantly improve the spectral efficiency, it also leads to high hardware complexity and huge power consumption. To overcome these challenges, we seek to jointly optimize the beamspace hybrid combiner and the ADC quantization bits allocation to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE) under some practical constraints. The formulated problem is non-convex due to the non-linear fractional objective function and the non-convex feasible set which is generally intractable. In order to handle these difficulties, we first apply some fractional programming (FP) techniques and introduce auxiliary variables to recast this problem into an equivalent form amenable to optimization. Then, we propose an efficient double-loop iterative algorithm based on the penalty dual decomposition (PDD) and the majorization-minimization (MM) methods to find local stationary solutions. Simulation results reveal significant gain over the baselines.

Power Control for Massive MIMO Systems with Nonorthogonal Pilots

This letter shows that optimizing the transmit powers along with optimally designed nonorthogonal pilots can significantly reduce pilot contamination and improve the overall throughput of the uplink multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system as compared to the conventional schemes that use orthogonal pilots. Given the optimized nonorthogonal pilots, power control as a function of the large-scale path-loss can be thought of as a stochastic optimization problem due to the presence of fast fading. This paper advocates a deterministic approach to solve this problem, then further proposes a stochastic optimization method that utilizes successive convex approximation as a benchmark to quantify the performance of the proposed approach. Simulation results reveal significant advantage of using optimized nonorthogonal pilots together with power control to combat pilot contamination.

Randomized Channel Sparsifying Hybrid Precoding for FDD Massive MIMO Systems

We propose a novel randomized channel sparsifying hybrid precoding (RCSHP) design to reduce the signaling overhead of channel estimation and the hardware cost and power consumption at the base station (BS), in order to fully harvest benefits of frequency division duplex (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. RCSHP allows time-sharing among multiple analog precoders, each serving a compatible user group. The analog precoder is adapted to the channel statistics to properly sparsify the channel for the associated user group, such that the resulting effective channel (product of channel and analog precoder) not only has enough spatial degrees of freedom (DoF) to serve this group of users, but also can be accurately estimated under the limited pilot budget. The digital precoder is adapted to the effective channel based on the duality theory to facilitate the power allocation and exploit the spatial multiplexing gain. We formulate the joint optimization of the time-sharing factors and the associated sets of analog precoders and power allocations as a general utility optimization problem, which considers the impact of effective channel estimation error on the system performance. Then we propose an efficient stochastic successive convex approximation algorithm to provably obtain Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) points of this problem.

Angular-Domain Selective Channel Tracking and Doppler Compensation for High-Mobility mmWave Massive MIMO

In this paper, we consider a mmWave massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system with one static base station (BS) serving a fast-moving user, both equipped with a very large array. The transmitted signal arrives at the user through multiple paths, each with a different angle of-arrival and hence Doppler frequency offset, thus resulting in a fast time-varying multipath fading MIMO channel. In order to mitigate the Doppler-induced channel aging for reduced pilot overhead, we propose a new angular-domain selective channel tracking and Doppler compensation scheme at the user side. We formulate the joint estimation of partial angular-domain channel and DFO parameters as a dynamic compressive sensing problem. Then we propose a Doppler-aware-dynamic variational Bayesian inference (DD-VBI) algorithm to solve this problem efficiently. Finally, we propose a practical DFO compensation scheme which selects the dominant paths of the fast time-varying channel for DFO compensation and thereby converts it into a slow time-varying effective channel. Compared with the existing methods, the proposed scheme can enjoy the huge array gain provided by the massive MIMO and also balance the tradeoff between the CSI signaling overhead and spatial multiplexing gain. Simulation results verify the advantages of the proposed scheme over various baseline schemes.

Parallel Stochastic Optimization Framework for Large-Scale Non-Convex Stochastic Problems

In this paper, we consider the problem of stochastic optimization, where the objective function is in terms of the expectation of a (possibly non-convex) cost function that is parametrized by a random variable. While the convergence speed is critical for many emerging applications, most existing stochastic optimization methods suffer from slow convergence. Furthermore, the emerging technology of parallel computing has motivated an increasing demand for designing new stochastic optimization schemes that can handle parallel optimization for implementation in distributed systems. We propose a fast parallel stochastic optimization framework that can solve a large class of possibly non-convex stochastic optimization problems that may arise in applications with multi-agent systems. In the proposed method, each agent updates its control variable in parallel, by solving a convex quadratic subproblem independently. The convergence of the proposed method to the optimal solution for convex problems and to a stationary point for general non-convex problems is established. The proposed algorithm can be applied to solve a large class of optimization problems arising in important applications from various fields, such as machine learning and wireless networks. As a representative application of our proposed stochastic optimization framework, we focus on large-scale support vector machines and demonstrate how our algorithm can efficiently solve this problem, especially in modern applications with huge datasets. Using popular real-world datasets, we present experimental results to demonstrate the merits of our proposed framework by comparing its performance to the state-of-the-art in the literature. Numerical results show that the proposed method can significantly outperform the state-of-the-art methods in terms of the convergence speed while having the same or lower complexity and storage requirement.

Mixed-Timescale Beamforming and Power Splitting for Massive MIMO Aided SWIPT IoT Network

Traditional simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) with power splitting assumes perfect channel state information (CSI), which is difficult to obtain especially in the massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) regime. In this letter, we consider a mixed-timescale joint beamforming and power splitting (MJBP) scheme to maximize general utility functions under a power constraint in the downlink of a massive MIMO SWIPT IoT network. In this scheme, the transmit digital beamformer is adapted to the imperfect CSI, while the receive power splitters are adapted to the long-term channel statistics only due to the consideration of hardware limit and signaling overhead. The formulated optimization problem is solved using a mixed-timescale online stochastic successive convex approximation (MO-SSCA) algorithm. Simulation results reveal significant gain over the baselines.

Two-Timescale Hybrid Compression and Forward for Massive MIMO Aided C-RAN

We consider the uplink of a cloud radio access network (C-RAN), where massive MIMO remote radio heads (RRHs) serve as relays between users and a centralized baseband unit (BBU). Although employing massive MIMO at RRHs can improve the spectral efficiency, it also significantly increases the amount of data transported over the fronthaul links between RRHs and BBU, which becomes a performance bottleneck. Existing fronthaul compression methods for conventional C-RAN are not suitable for the massive MIMO regime because they require fully-digital processing and/or real-time full channel state information (CSI), incurring high implementation cost for massive MIMO RRHs. To overcome this challenge, we propose to perform a two-timescale hybrid analog-and-digital spatial filtering at each RRH to reduce the fronthaul consumption. Specifically, the analog filter is adaptive to the channel statistics to achieve massive MIMO array gain, and the digital filter is adaptive to the instantaneous effective CSI to achieve spatial multiplexing gain. Such a design can alleviate the performance bottleneck of limited fronthaul with reduced hardware cost and power consumption, and is more robust to the CSI delay. We propose an online algorithm for the two-timescale non-convex optimization of analog and digital filters, and establish its convergence to stationary solutions. Finally, simulations verify the advantages of the proposed scheme.

Stochastic Successive Convex Approximation for Non-Convex Constrained Stochastic Optimization

This paper proposes a constrained stochastic successive convex approximation (CSSCA) algorithm to find a stationary point for a general non-convex stochastic optimization problem, whose objective and constraint functions are non-convex and involve expectations over random states. Most existing methods for non-convex stochastic optimization, such as the stochastic (average) gradient and stochastic majorization-minimization, only consider minimizing a stochastic non-convex objective over a deterministic convex set. The proposed CSSCA algorithm can also handle stochastic non-convex constraints in optimization problems, and it opens the way to solving more challenging optimization problems that occur in many applications. The algorithm is based on solving a sequence of convex objective/feasibility optimization problems obtained by replacing the objective/constraint functions in the original problems with some convex surrogate functions. The CSSCA algorithm allows a wide class of surrogate functions and thus provides many freedoms to design good surrogate functions for specific applications. Moreover, it also facilitates parallel implementation for solving large scale stochastic optimization problems, which arise naturally in today's signal processing such as machine learning and big data analysis. We establish the convergence of CSSCA algorithm with a feasible initial point, and customize the algorithmic framework to solve several important application problems. Simulations show that the CSSCA algorithm can achieve superior performance over existing solutions.

Joint Channel Estimation and User Grouping for Massive MIMO Systems

This paper addresses the problem of joint downlink channel estimation and user grouping in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where the motivation comes from the fact that the channel estimation performance can be improved if we exploit additional common sparsity among nearby users. In the literature, a commonly used group sparsity model assumes that users in each group share a uniform sparsity pattern. In practice, however, this oversimplified assumption usually fails to hold, even for physically close users. Outliers deviated from the uniform sparsity pattern in each group may significantly degrade the effectiveness of common sparsity, and hence bring limited (or negative) gain for channel estimation. To better capture the group sparse structure in practice, we provide a general model having two sparsity components: commonly shared sparsity and individual sparsity, where the additional individual sparsity accounts for any outliers. Then, we propose a novel sparse Bayesian learning (SBL)-based framework to address the joint channel estimation and user grouping problem under the general sparsity model. The framework can fully exploit the common sparsity among nearby users and exclude the harmful effect from outliers simultaneously. Simulation results reveal substantial performance gains over the existing state-of-the-art baselines.

Structured Turbo Compressed Sensing for Downlink Massive MIMO-OFDM Channel Estimation

Compressed sensing has been employed to reduce the pilot overhead for channel estimation in wireless communication systems. Particularly, structured turbo compressed sensing (STCS) provides a generic framework for structured sparse signal recovery with reduced computational complexity and storage requirement. In this paper, we consider the problem of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) channel estimation in a frequency division duplexing (FDD) downlink system. By exploiting the structured sparsity in the angle-frequency domain (AFD) and angle-delay domain (ADD) of the massive MIMO-OFDM channel, we represent the channel by using AFD and ADD probability models and design message-passing based channel estimators under the STCS framework. Several STCS-based algorithms are proposed for massive MIMO-OFDM channel estimation by exploiting the structured sparsity. We show that, compared with other existing algorithms, the proposed algorithms have a much faster convergence speed and achieve competitive error performance under a wide range of simulation settings.

Mixed-Timescale Online PHY Caching for Dual-Mode MIMO Cooperative Networks

Recently, physical layer (PHY) caching has been proposed to exploit the dynamic side information induced by caches at base stations (BSs) to support Coordinated Multi-Point (CoMP) and achieve huge degrees of freedom (DoF) gains. Due to the limited cache storage capacity, the performance of PHY caching depends heavily on the cache content placement algorithm. In existing algorithms, the cache content placement is adaptive to the long-term popularity distribution in an offline manner. We propose an online PHY caching framework which adapts the cache content placement to microscopic spatial and temporary popularity variations to fully exploit the benefits of PHY caching. Specifically, the joint optimization of online cache content placement and content delivery is formulated as a mixed-timescale drift minimization problem to increase the CoMP opportunity and reduce the cache content placement cost. We propose a low-complexity algorithm to obtain a throughput-optimal solution. Moreover, we provide a closed-form characterization of the maximum sum DoF in the stability region and study the impact of key system parameters on the stability region. Simulations show that the proposed online PHY caching framework achieves large gain over existing solutions.

Joint Frequency Reuse and Cache Optimization in Backhaul-Limited Small-Cell Wireless Networks

Caching at base stations (BSs) is a promising approach for supporting the tremendous traffic growth of content delivery over future small-cell wireless networks with limited backhaul. This paper considers exploiting spatial caching diversity (i.e., caching different subsets of popular content files at neighboring BSs) that can greatly improve the cache hit probability, thereby leading to a better overall system performance. A key issue in exploiting spatial caching diversity is that the cached content may not be located at the nearest BS, which means that to access such content, a user needs to overcome strong interference from the nearby BSs; this significantly limits the gain of spatial caching diversity. In this paper, we consider a joint design of frequency reuse and caching, such that the benefit of an improved cache hit probability induced by spatial caching diversity and the benefit of interference coordination induced by frequency reuse can be achieved simultaneously. We obtain a closed-form characterization of the approximate successful transmission probability for the proposed scheme and analyze the impact of key operating parameters on the performance. We design a low-complexity algorithm to optimize the frequency reuse factor and the cache storage allocation. Simulations show that the proposed scheme achieves a higher successful transmission probability than existing caching schemes.

Mixed-timescale Per-group Hybrid Precoding for Multiuser Massive MIMO Systems

Considering the expensive radio frequency (RF) chain, huge training overhead and feedback burden issues in massive MIMO, in this letter, we propose a mixed-timescale per-group hybrid precoding (MPHP) scheme under an adaptive partially-connected RF precoding structure (PRPS), where the RF precoder is implemented using an adaptive connection network (ACN) and M analog phase shifters (APSs), where M is the number of antennas at the base station (BS). Exploiting the mixed-time stage channel state information (CSI) structure, the joint-design of ACN and APSs is formulated as a statistical signal-to-leakage-and-noise ratio (SSLNR) maximization problem, and a heuristic group RF precoding (GRFP) algorithm is proposed to provide a near-optimal solution. Simulation results show that the proposed design advances at better energy efficiency (EE) and lower hardware cost, CSI signaling overhead and computational complexity than the conventional hybrid precoding (HP) schemes.

Energy-Efficient Joint Offloading and Wireless Resource Allocation Strategy in Multi-MEC Server Systems

Mobile edge computing (MEC) is an emerging paradigm that mobile devices can offload the computation-intensive or latency-critical tasks to the nearby MEC servers, so as to save energy and extend battery life. Unlike the cloud server, MEC server is a small-scale data center deployed at a wireless access point, thus it is highly sensitive to both radio and computing resource. In this paper, we consider an Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing Access (OFDMA) based multi-user and multi-MEC-server system, where the task offloading strategies and wireless resources allocation are jointly investigated. Aiming at minimizing the total energy consumption, we propose the joint offloading and resource allocation strategy for latency-critical applications. Through the bi-level optimization approach, the original NP-hard problem is decoupled into the lower-level problem seeking for the allocation of power and subcarrier and the upper-level task offloading problem. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves excellent performance in energy saving and successful offloading probability (SOP) in comparison with conventional schemes.

FDD Massive MIMO Channel Estimation with Arbitrary 2D-Array Geometry

This paper addresses the problem of downlink channel estimation in frequency-division duplexing (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The existing methods usually exploit hidden sparsity under a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) basis to estimate the cdownlink channel. However, there are at least two shortcomings of these DFT-based methods: 1) they are applicable to uniform linear arrays (ULAs) only, since the DFT basis requires a special structure of ULAs, and 2) they always suffer from a performance loss due to the leakage of energy over some DFT bins. To deal with the above shortcomings, we introduce an off-grid model for downlink channel sparse representation with arbitrary 2D-array antenna geometry, and propose an efficient sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) approach for the sparse channel recovery and off-grid refinement. The main idea of the proposed off-grid method is to consider the sampled grid points as adjustable parameters. Utilizing an in-exact block majorization-minimization (MM) algorithm, the grid points are refined iteratively to minimize the off-grid gap. Finally, we further extend the solution to uplink-aided channel estimation by exploiting the angular reciprocity between downlink and uplink channels, which brings enhanced recovery performance.

Stochastic Successive Convex Optimization for Two-timescale Hybrid Precoding in Massive MIMO

Hybrid precoding, which consists of an RF precoder and a baseband precoder, is a popular precoding architecture for massive MIMO due to its low hardware cost and power consumption. In conventional hybrid precoding, both RF and baseband precoders are adaptive to the real-time channel state information (CSI). As a result, an individual RF precoder is required for each subcarrier in wideband systems, leading to high implementation cost. To overcome this issue, two-timescale hybrid precoding (THP), which adapts the RF precoder to the channel statistics, has been proposed. Since the channel statistics are approximately the same over different subcarriers, only a single RF precoder is required in THP. Despite the advantages of THP, there lacks a unified and efficient algorithm for its optimization due to the non-convex and stochastic nature of the problem. Based on stochastic successive convex approximation (SSCA), we propose an online algorithmic framework called SSCA-THP for general THP optimization problems, in which the hybrid precoder is updated by solving a quadratic surrogate optimization problem whenever a new channel sample is obtained. Then we prove the convergence of SSCA-THP to stationary points. Finally, we apply SSCA-THP to solve three important THP optimization problems and verify its advantages over existing solutions.
