DNA unzipping and the unbinding of directed polymers in a random media

We consider the unbinding of a directed polymer in a random media from a wall in $d=1+1$ dimensions and a simple one-dimensional model for DNA unzipping. Using the replica trick we show that the restricted partition functions of these problems are {\em identical} up to an overall normalization factor. Our finding gives an example of a generalization of the stochastic matrix form decomposition to disordered systems; a method which effectively allows to reduce dimensionality of the problem. The equivalence between the two problems, for example, allows us to derive the probability distribution for finding the directed polymer a distance $z$ from the wall. We discuss implications of these results for the related Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation and the asymmetric exclusion process.

Interference between independent fluctuating condensates

We consider a problem of interference between two independent condensates, which lack true long range order. We show that their interference pattern contains information about correlation functions within each condensate. As an example we analyze the interference between a pair of one dimensional interacting Bose liquids. We find universal scaling of the average fringe contrast with system size and temperature that depends only on the Luttinger parameter. Moreover the full distribution of the fringe contrast, which is also equivalent to the full counting statistics of the interfering atoms, changes with interaction strength and lends information on high order correlation functions. We also demonstrate that the interference between two-dimensional condensates at finite temperature can be used as a direct probe of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Finally, we discuss generalization of our results to describe the intereference of a periodic array of independent fluctuating condensates.

Coexistence of gapless excitations and commensurate charge-density wave in the 2H-transition metal dichalcogenides

An unexpected feature common to 2H-transition metal dichalcogenides (2H-TMDs) is revealed with first-principles Wannier functions analysis of the electronic structure of the prototype 2H-TaSe2: The low-energy Ta \red{``$5d_{z^2}$''} bands governing the physics of charge-density wave (CDW) is dominated by hopping between next-nearest neighbors. With this motivation we develop a minimal effective model for the CDW formation, in which the unusual form of the hopping leads to an approximate decoupling of the three sublattices. In the CDW phase one sublattice remains undistorted, leaving the bands associated with it ungapped everywhere in the Fermi surface, resolving the long-standing puzzle of coexistence of gapless excitations and commensurate CDW in the 2H-TMDs.

Universal adiabatic dynamics across a quantum critical point

We study temporal behavior of a quantum system under a slow external perturbation, which drives the system across a second order quantum phase transition. It is shown that despite the conventional adiabaticity conditions are always violated near the critical point, the number of created excitations still goes to zero in the limit of infinitesimally slow variation of the tuning parameter. It scales with the adiabaticity parameter as a power related to the critical exponents $z$ and $ν$ characterizing the phase transition. We support general arguments by direct calculations for the Boson Hubbard and the transverse field Ising models.

Quantum corrections to the dynamics of interacting bosons: beyond the truncated Wigner approximation

We develop a consistent perturbation theory in quantum fluctuations around the classical evolution of a system of interacting bosons. The zero order approximation gives the classical Gross-Pitaevskii equations. In the next order we recover the truncated Wigner approximation, where the evolution is still classical but the initial conditions are distributed according to the Wigner transform of the initial density matrix. Further corrections can be characterized as quantum scattering events, which appear in the form of a nonlinear response of the observable to an infinitesimal displacement of the field along its classical evolution. At the end of the paper we give a few numerical examples to test the formalism.

Unzipping flux lines from extended defects in type-II superconductors

With magnetic force microscopy in mind, we study the unbinding transition of individual flux lines from extended defects like columnar pins and twin planes in type II superconductors. In the presence of point disorder, the transition is universal with an exponent which depends only on the dimensionality of the extended defect. We also consider the unbinding transition of a single vortex line from a twin plane occupied by other vortices. We show that the critical properties of this transition depend strongly on the Luttinger liquid parameter which describes the long distance physics of the two-dimensional flux line array.

Vortex pinning by a columnar defect in planar superconductors with point disorder

We study the effect of a single columnar pin on a $(1+1)$ dimensional array of vortex lines in planar type II superconductors in the presence of point disorder. In large samples, the pinning is most effective right at the temperature of the vortex glass transition. In particular, there is a pronounced maximum in the number of vortices which are prevented from tilting by the columnar defect in a weak transverse magnetic field. Using renormalization group techniques we show that the columnar pin is irrelevant at long length scales both above and below the transition, but due to very different mechanisms. This behavior differs from the disorder-free case, where the pin is relevant in the low temperature phase. Solutions of the renormalization equations in the different regimes allow a discussion of the crossover between the pure and disordered cases. We also compute density oscillations around the columnar pin and the response of these oscillations to a weak transverse magnetic field.

Effect of quantum fluctuations on the dipolar motion of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

We revisit dipolar motion of condensate atoms in one-dimensional optical lattices and harmonic magnetic traps including quantum fluctuations within the truncated Wigner approximation. In the strong tunneling limit we reproduce the meanfield results with a sharp dynamical transition at the critical displacement. When the tunneling is reduced, on the contrary, strong quantum fluctuations lead to finite damping of condensate oscillations even at infinitesimal displacement. We argue that there is a smooth crossover between the chaotic classical transition at finite displacement and the superfluid-to-insulator phase transition at zero displacement. We further analyze the time dependence of the density fluctuations and of the coherence of the condensate and find several nontrivial dynamical effects, which can be observed in the present experimental conditions.

Phase transition of one dimensional bosons with strong disorder

We study one dimensional disordered bosons at large commensurate filling. Using a real space renormalization group approach we find a new random fixed point which controls a phase transition from a superfluid to an incompressible Mott-glass. The transition can be tuned by changing the disorder distribution even with vanishing interactions. We derive the properties of the transition, which suggest that it is in the Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class.

Evolution of the macroscopically entangled states in optical lattices

We consider dynamics of boson condensates in finite optical lattices under a slow external perturbation which brings the system to the unstable equilibrium. It is shown that quantum fluctuations drive the condensate into the maximally entangled state. We argue that the truncated Wigner approximation being a natural generalization of the Gross-Pitaevskii classical equations of motion is adequate to correctly describe the time evolution including both collapse and revival of the condensate.

Spin collective mode and quasiparticle contributions to STM spectra of d-wave superconductors with pinning

We present additional details of the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) spectra predicted by the model of pinning of dynamic spin collective modes in d-wave superconductor proposed by Polkovnikov et al. (cond-mat/0203176). Along with modulations at the twice the wavevector of the spin collective mode, the local density of states (LDOS) displays features linked to the spectrum of the Bogoliubov quasiparticles. The former is expected to depend more strongly on an applied magnetic field or the doping concentration. The spin collective mode and the quasiparticles are distinct, co-existing, low energy excitations of the d-wave superconductor (strongly coupled only in some sectors of the Brillouin zone), and should not be viewed as mutually exclusive sources of LDOS modulation.

Non-equilibrium Gross-Pitaevskii dynamics of boson lattice models

Motivated by recent experiments on trapped ultra-cold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice potential, we consider the non-equilibrium dynamic properties of such bosonic systems for a number of experimentally relevant situations. When the number of bosons per lattice site is large, there is a wide parameter regime where the effective boson interactions are strong, but the ground state remains a superfluid (and not a Mott insulator): we describe the conditions under which the dynamics in this regime can be described by a discrete Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We describe the evolution of the phase coherence after the system is initially prepared in a Mott insulating state, and then allowed to evolve after a sudden change in parameters places it in a regime with a superfluid ground state. We also consider initial conditions with a "pi phase" imprint on a superfluid ground state (i.e. the initial phases of neighboring wells differ by pi), and discuss the subsequent appearance of density wave order and "Schrodinger cat" states.

Pinning of dynamic spin density wave fluctuations in the cuprate superconductors

We present a theory of the pinning of dynamic spin density wave (SDW) fluctuations in a d-wave superconductor by local imperfections which preserve spin-rotation invariance, such as impurities or vortex cores. The pinning leads to static spatial modulations in spin-singlet observables, while the SDW correlations remain dynamic: these are the `Friedel oscillations' of a spin-gap antiferromagnet. We connect the spectrum of these modulations as observed by scanning tunnelling microscopy to the dynamic spin structure factor measured by inelastic neutron scattering.

Magnetic field tuning of charge and spin order in the cuprate superconductors

Recent neutron scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance, and scanning tunneling microscopy experiments have yielded valuable new information on the interplay between charge and spin density wave order and superconductivity in the cuprate superconductors, by using an applied perpendicular magnetic field to tune the ground state properties. We compare the results of these experiments with the predictions of a theory which assumed that the ordinary superconductor was proximate to a quantum transition to a superconductor with co-existing spin/charge density wave order.

Kondo effect in d-wave superconductors

We present theoretical investigation of a single magnetic impurity in a d-wave superconductor using the large N limit. It is shown that the Kondo screening occurs only in the presence of the particle-hole asymmetry. We find analytical expressions for the Kondo temperature, magnetic susceptibility and scattering matrix near the phase transition. The results are generalized for the density of states vanishing with an arbitrary exponent. Also we briefly study the modifications of the theory for the case of a non-magnetic impurity which induces a staggered spin configuration on the nearby copper atoms.

Electron-Electron Relaxation Effect on Auger Recombination in Direct Band Semiconductors

Influence of electron-electron relaxation processes on Auger recombination rate in direct band semiconductors is investigated. Comparison between carrier-carrier and carrier-phonon relaxation processes is provided. It is shown that relaxation processes are essential if the free path length of carriers doesn't exceed a certain critical value, which exponentially increases with temperature. For illustration of obtained results a typical InGaAsP compound is used.

Impurity in a d-wave superconductor: Kondo effect and STM spectra

We present a theory for recent STM studies of Zn impurities in the superconductor BSCCO, using insights from NMR experiments which show that there is a net S=1/2 moment on the Cu ions near the Zn. We argue that the Kondo spin dynamics of this moment is the origin of the low bias peak in the differential conductance, rather than a resonance in a purely potential scattering model. The spatial and energy dependence of the STM spectra of our model can also fit the experiments.

Reflection of light and heavy holes from a linear potential barrier

In this paper we study reflection of holes in direct-band semiconductors from the linear potential barrier. It is shown that light-heavy hole transformation matrix is universal. It depends only on a dimensionless product of the light hole longitudinal momentum and the characteristic length determined by the slope of the potential and doesn't depend on the ratio of light and heavy hole masses, provided this ratio is small. It is shown that the transformation coefficient goes to zero both in the limit of small and large longitudinal momenta, however the phase of a reflected hole is different in these limits. An approximate analytical expression for the light-heavy hole transformation coefficient is found.
