Discriminant of the ordinary transversal singularity type. The global equivalence class

Consider a space X with the singular locus of positive dimension, Z=Sing(X). Suppose both Z and X are locally complete intersections at each point. The transversal type of X along Z is generically constant but at some points of Z it degenerates. In the previous work we have introduced (locally) the discriminant of the transversal type, a subscheme of Z, that reflects these degenerations whenever the generic transversal type is "ordinary". We have established the basic local properties of the discriminant. In the current paper we consider the global case. We compute the equivalence class of the discriminant in the Picard group, Pic(Z). If $X$ is a hypersurface, the discriminant is naturally stratified by the singularities of fibres in the projectivized normal cone $\mathbb{P}$N$_{X/Z}$. In this case (under some additional assumptions) we compute the classes of low codimension strata in the Chow group, A$^2$(Z). As immediate applications, we (re)derive the multi-degrees of the classical discriminant of projective complete intersections and bound the jumps of multiplicity of X along Z (when the singular locus is one-dimensional).

Discriminant of the ordinary transversal singularity type. The local aspects

Consider a space X with the singular locus, Z=Sing(X), of positive dimension. Suppose both Z and X are locally complete intersections. The transversal type of X along Z is generically constant but at some points of Z it degenerates. We introduce (under certain conditions) the discriminant of the transversal type, a subscheme of Z, that reflects these degenerations whenever the generic transversal type is `ordinary'. The scheme structure of this discriminant is imposed by various compatibility properties and is often non-reduced. We establish the basic properties of this discriminant: it is a Cartier divisor in Z, functorial under base change, flat under some deformations of (X,Z), and compatible with pullback under some morphisms, etc. Furthermore, we study the local geometry of this discriminant, e.g. we compute its multiplicity at a point, and we obtain the resolution of its structure sheaf (as module on Z) and study the locally defining equation.

Durfee-type bound for some non-degenerate complete intersection singularities

The Milnor number, μ(X,0), and the singularity genus, p_g(X,0), are fundamental invariants of isolated hypersurface singularities (more generally, of local complete intersections). The long standing Durfee conjecture (and its generalization) predicted the inequality μ(X,0) \geq (n+1)!p_g(X,0), here n=dim(X,0). Recently we have constructed counterexamples, proposed a corrected bound and verified it for the homogeneous complete intersections. In the current paper we treat the case of germs with Newton-non-degenerate principal part when the Newton diagrams are "large enough", i.e. they are large multiples of some other diagrams. In the case of local complete intersections we prove the corrected inequality, while in the hypersurface case we prove an even stronger inequality.

A generalized FKG-inequality for compositions

We prove a Fortuin-Kasteleyn-Ginibre-type inequality for the lattice of compositions of the integer n with at most r parts. As an immediate application we get a wide generalization of the classical Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for mixed volumes and of Teissier's inequality for mixed covolumes.

Surgery formulae for the Seiberg-Witten invariant of plumbed 3-manifolds

Assume that $M(\mathcal{T})$ is a rational homology sphere plumbed 3-manifold associated with a connected negative definite graph $\mathcal{T}$. We consider the combinatorial multivariable Poincaré series associated with $\mathcal{T}$ and its counting functions, which encode rich topological information. Using the `periodic constant' of the series (with reduced variables) we prove surgery formulae for the normalized Seiberg-Witten invariants: the periodic constant appears as the difference of the Seiberg-Witten invariants associated with $M(\mathcal{T})$ and $M(\mathcal{T}\setminus\mathcal{I})$, where $\mathcal{I}$ is an arbitrary subset of the set of vertices of $\mathcal{T}$.

On the set of L-space surgeries for links

It it known that the set of L-space surgeries on a nontrivial L-space knot is always bounded from below. However, already for two-component torus links the set of L-space surgeries might be unbounded from below. For algebraic two-component links we provide three complete characterizations for the boundedness from below: one in terms of the $h$-function, one in terms of the Alexander polynomial, and one in terms of the embedded resolution graph. They show that the set of L-space surgeries is bounded from below for most algebraic links. In fact, the used property of the $h$-function is a sufficient condition for non-algebraic L-space links as well.

Euler characteristics of Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces with simple singularities

This is an announcement of conjectures and results concerning the generating series of Euler characteristics of Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces with simple (Kleinian) singularities. For a quotient surface C^2/G with G a finite subgroup of SL(2, C), we conjecture a formula for this generating series in terms of Lie-theoretic data, which is compatible with existing results for type A singularities. We announce a proof of our conjecture for singularities of type D. The generating series in our conjecture can be seen as a specialized character of the basic representation of the corresponding (extended) affine Lie algebra; we discuss possible representation-theoretic consequences of this fact. Our results, respectively conjectures, imply the modularity of the generating function for surfaces with type A and type D, respectively arbitrary, simple singularities, confirming predictions of S-duality.

Links of rational singularities, L-spaces and LO fundamental groups

We prove that the link of a complex normal surface singularity is an L--space if and only if the singularity is rational. This via a recent result of Hanselman, J. Rasmussen, S. D. Rasmussen and Watson (proving the conjecture of Boyer, Gordon and Watson), shows that a singularity link is not rational if and only if its fundamental group is left-orderable if and only if it admits a coorientable taut foliation.

Seiberg-Witten invariant of the universal abelian cover of $S^3_{-p/q}(K)$

We prove an additivity property for the normalized Seiberg-Witten invariants with respect to the universal abelian cover of those 3-manifolds, which are obtained via negative rational Dehn surgeries along connected sum of algebraic knots. Although the statement is purely topological, we use the theory of complex singularities in several steps of the proof. This topological covering additivity property can be compared with certain analytic properties of normal surface singularities, especially with functorial behaviour of the (equivariant) geometric genus of singularities. We present several examples in order to find the validity limits of the proved property, one of them shows that the covering additivity property is not true for negative definite plumbed 3-manifolds in general.

Lattice and Heegaard-Floer homologies of algebraic links

We compute the Heegaard-Floer link homology of algebraic links in terms of the multivariate Hilbert function of the corresponding plane curve singularities. The main result of the paper identifies four homologies: (a) the Heegaard-Floer link homology of the local embedded link of the germ, (b) the lattice homology associated with the Hilbert function, (c) the homologies of the projectivized complements of local hyperplane arrangements cut out from the local algebra, and (d) a certain variant of the Orlik-Solomon algebra of these local arrangements. In particular, the Poincaré polynomials of all these homology groups are the same, and we also show that they agree with the coefficients of the motivic Poincaré series of the singularity.

Durfee's conjecture on the signature of smoothings of surface singularities

In 1978 Durfee conjectured various inequalities between the signature and the geometric genus of a normal surface singularity. Since then a few counter examples have been found and positive results established in some special cases. We prove a `strong' Durfee--type inequality for any smoothing of a Gorenstein singularity, provided that the intersection form the resolution is unimodular, and the conjectured `weak' inequality for all hypersurface singularities and for sufficiently large multiplicity strict complete intersections. The proofs establish general inequalities valid for any normal surface singularity.

Morse theory for manifolds with boundary

We develop Morse theory for manifolds with boundary. Besides standard and expected facts like the handle cancellation theorem and the Morse lemma for manifolds with boundary, we prove that, under a topological assumption, a critical point in the interior of a Morse function can be moved to the boundary, where it splits into a pair of boundary critical points. As an application, we prove that every cobordism of manifolds with boundary splits as a union of left product cobordisms and right product cobordisms.

Lattice cohomology and rational cuspidal curves

We show a counterexample to a conjecture of de Bobadilla, Luengo, Melle-Hernández and Némethi on rational cuspidal projective plane curves. The counterexample is a tricuspidal curve of degree 8. On the other hand, we show that if the number of cusps is at most 2, then the original conjecture can be deduced from the recent results of Borodzik and Livingston and (lattice cohomology) computations of Némethi and Román. Then we formulate a `simplified' (slightly weaker) version, more in the spirit of the motivation of the original conjecture (comparing index type numerical invariants), and we prove it for all currently known rational cuspidal curves. We make all these identities and inequalities more transparent in the language of lattice cohomology of surgery 3-manifolds $S^3_{-d}(K)$, where $K$ is a connected sum of algebraic knots $\{K_i\}_i$. Finally, we prove that the zeroth lattice cohomology of this surgery manifold depends only on the multiset of multiplicities occurring in the multiplicity sequences describing the algebraic knots $K_i$. This result is closely related to the lattice-cohomological reformulation of the above mentioned theorems and conjectures, and provides new computational and comparison procedures.

Immersions associated with holomorphic germs

A holomorphic germ Φ: (C^2, 0) \to (C^3, 0), singular only at the origin, induces at the links level an immersion of S^3 into S^5. The regular homotopy type of such immersions are determined by their Smale invariant, defined up to a sign ambiguity. In this paper we fix a sign of the Smale invariant and we show that for immersions induced by holomorphic gems the sign-refined Smale invariant is the negative of the number of cross caps appearing in a generic perturbation of Φ. Using the algebraic method we calculate it for some families of singularities, among others the A-D-E quotient singularities. As a corollary, we obtain that the regular homotopy classes which admit holomorphic representatives are exactly those, which have non-positive sign-refined Smale invariant. This answers a question of Mumford regarding exactly this correspondence. We also determine the sign ambiguity in the topological formulae of Hughes-Melvin and Ekholm-Szucs connecting the Smale invariant with (singular) Seifert surfaces. In the case of holomorphic realizations of Seifert surfaces, we also determine their involved invariants in terms of holomorhic geometry.

Links of singularities up to regular homotopy

The abstract link L_d of the complex isolated singularity x^2 + y^2 + z^2 + v^{2d} = 0 is diffeomorphic to S^3 \times S^2. We classify the embedded links of these singularities up to regular homotopies precomposed with diffeomorphisms of S^3 \times S^2. Let us denote by i_d the inclusion of L_d in S^7. We show that for arbitrary diffeomorphisms φ_d of S^3 \times S^2 with L_d the compositions i_d \circ φ_d are image regularly homotopic for two values d_1 and d_2 if and only if d_1-d_2 is even.

Reduction theorem for lattice cohomology

The lattice cohomology of a plumbed 3--manifold $M$ associated with a connected negative definite plumbing graph is an important tool in the study of topological properties of $M$, and in the comparison of the topological properties with analytic ones when $M$ is realized as complex analytic singularity link. By definition, its computation is based on the (Riemann--Roch) weights of the lattice points of $\Z^s$, where $s$ is the number of vertices of the plumbing graph. The present article reduces the rank of this lattice to the number of `bad' vertices of the graph. (Usually the geometry/topology of $M$ is codified exactly by these `bad' vertices via surgery or other constructions. Their number measures how far is the plumbing graph from a rational one.) The effect of the reduction appears also at the level of certain multivariable (topological Poincaré) series as well. Since from these series one can also read the Seiberg--Witten invariants, the reduction theorem provides new formulae for these invariants too. The reduction also implies the vanishing $\bH^q=0$ of the lattice cohomology for $q\geq ν$, where $ν$ is the number of `bad' vertices. (This bound is sharp.)
