The Hodge spectrum of analytic germs on isolated surface singularities

We use topological methods to prove a semicontinuity property of the Hodge spectra for analytic germs defined on an isolated surface singularity. For this we introduce an analogue of the Seifert matrix (the fractured Seifert matrix), and of the Levine--Tristram signatures associated with it, defined for null-homologous links in arbitrary three dimensional manifolds. Moreover, we establish Murasugi type inequalities in the presence of cobordisms of links. It turns out that the fractured Seifert matrix determines the Hodge spectrum and the Murasugi type inequalities can be read as spectrum semicontinuity inequalities.

Holomorphic arcs on analytic spaces

Let X be a complex analytic space. A short analytic arc is a holomorphic map of the closed unit disc to X such that only the origin is mapped to a singular point. In contrast with the space of formal arcs studied by Nash, the moduli space of short analytic arcs usually has infinitely many connected components. We describe these for surface singularities, in terms of certain conjugacy classes of the fundamental group of the link. For quotient singularities (in any dimension), this gives a concrete realization of the McKay correspondence. Our results also give new connections between a surface cusp singularity, its dual and hyperbolic Inoue surfaces. version 2: References added.

On the semicontinuity of the mod 2 spectrum of hypersurface singularities

We use purely topological methods to prove the semicontinuity of the mod 2 spectrum of local isolated hypersurface singularities in $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$, using Seifert forms of high-dimensional non-spherical links, the Levine--Tristram signatures and the generalized Murasugi--Kawauchi inequality obtained in earlier work for cobordisms of links.

Ehrhart theory of polytopes and Seiberg-Witten invariants of plumbed 3-manifolds

Let M be a rational homology sphere plumbed 3-manifold associated with a connected negative definite plumbing graph. We show that its Seiberg-Witten invariants equal certain coefficients of an equivariant multivariable Ehrhart polynomial. For this, we construct the corresponding polytopes from the plumbing graphs together with an action of the first homology of M, and we develop Ehrhart theory for them. At an intermediate level we define the `periodic constant' of multivariable series and establish their properties. In this way, one identifies the Seiberg-Witten invariant of a plumbed 3-manifold, the periodic constant of its `combinatorial zeta-function', and a coefficient of the associated Ehrhart polynomial. We make detailed presentations for graphs with at most two nodes. The two node case has surprising connections with the theory of affine monoids of rank two.

Generalized Monodromy Conjecture in dimension two

The aim of the article is an extension of the Monodromy Conjecture of Denef and Loeser in dimension two, incorporating zeta functions with differential forms and targeting all monodromy eigenvalues, and also considering singular ambient spaces. That is, we treat in a conceptual unity the poles of the (generalized) topological zeta function and the monodromy eigenvalues associated with a complex analytic function germ f defined on a normal surface singularity (X,0). The article targets the `right' extension in the case when the link of (X,0) is a homology sphere. As a first step, we prove a splice decomposition formula for the topological zeta function Z(f,w;s) for any f and analytic differential form w, which will play the key technical localization tool in the later definitions and proofs. Then, we define a set of `allowed' differential forms via a local restriction along each splice component. For plane curves we show the following three guiding properties: (1) if s' is any pole of Z(f,w;s) with w allowed, then exp(2πis') is a monodromy eigenvalue of f; (2) the `standard' form is allowed; (3) every monodromy eigenvalue of f is obtained as in (1) for some allowed w and some s'. For general (X,0) we prove (1) unconditionally, and (2)-(3) under an additional (necessary) assumption, which generalizes the semigroup condition of Neumann-Wahl. Several examples illustrate the definitions and support the basic assumptions.

A counterexample to Durfee conjecture

An old conjecture of Durfee 1978 bounds the ratio of two basic invariants of complex isolated complete intersection surface singularities: the Milnor number and the singularity (or geometric) genus. We give a counterexample for the case of non-hypersurface complete intersections, and we formulate a weaker conjecture valid in arbitrary dimension and codimension. This weaker bound is asymptotically sharp. In this note we support the validity of the new proposed inequality by its verification in certain (homogeneous) cases. In our subsequent paper we will prove it for several other cases and we will provide a more comprehensive discussion.

Heegaard Floer homologies for (+1) surgeries on torus knots

We compute the Heegaard Floer homology of $S^3_1(K)$ (the (+1) surgery on the torus knot $T_{p,q}$) in terms of the semigroup generated by $p$ and $q$, and we find a compact formula (involving Dedekind sums) for the corresponding Ozsvath--Szabo d-invariant. We relate the result to known knot invariants of $T_{p,q}$ as the genus and the Levine--Tristram signatures. Furthermore, we emphasize the striking resemblance between Heegaard Floer homologies of (+1) and (-1) surgeries on torus knots. This relation is best seen at the level of $τ$ functions.

Two exact sequences for lattice cohomology

We establish two exact sequences for the lattice cohomology associated with non-degenerate plumbing graphs. The first is the analogue of the surgery exact triangle proved by Ozsvath and Szabo for the Heegaard-Floer invariant HF^+; for the lattice cohomology over Z_2-coefficients it was proved by J. Greene. Here we prove it over the integers, and we supplement it by some additional properties valid for negative definite graphs. The second exact sequence is an adapted version which does not mix the classes of the characteristic elements (spin^c-structures); it was partially motivated by the surgery formula for the Seiberg-Witten invariant obtained by Braun and the author. For this we define the `relative lattice cohomology' and we also determine its Euler characteristic in terms of Seiberg-Witten invariants.

The Seiberg-Witten invariants of negative definite plumbed 3-manifolds

We consider a connected negative definite plumbing graph, and we assume that the associated plumbed 3-manifold is a rational homology sphere. We provide two new combinatorial formulae for the Seiberg-Witten invariant of this manifold. The first one is the constant term of a `multivariable Hilbert polynomial', it reflects in a conceptual way the structure of the graph, and emphasizes the subtle parallelism between these topological invariants and the analytic invariants of normal surface singularities. The second formula realizes the Seiberg-Witten invariant as the normalized Euler characteristic of the lattice cohomology associated with the graph, supporting the conjectural connections between the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology, or the Heegaard-Floer homology, and the lattice cohomology.

The embedding dimension of weighted homogeneous surface singularities

We analyze the embedding dimension of a normal weighted homogeneous surface singularity, and more generally, the Poincaré series of the minimal set of generators of the graded algebra of regular functions, provided that the link of the germs is a rational homology sphere. In the case of several sub-families we provide explicit formulas in terms of the Seifert invariants (generalizing results of Wagreich and VanDyke), and we also provide key examples showing that, in general, these invariants are not topological. We extend the discussion to the case of splice--quotient singularities with star--shaped graph as well.

The cohomology of line bundles of splice-quotient singularities

We provide several results on splice-quotient singularities: a combinatorial expression of the dimension of the first cohomology of all `natural' line bundles, an equivariant Campillo-Delgado-Gusein-Zade type formula about the dimension of relative sections of line bundles (proving that the equivariant, divisorial multi-variable Hilbert series is topological), a combinatorial description of divisors of analytic function-germs, and an expression for the multiplicity of the singularity from its resolution graph. Additional, we establish a new formula for the Seiberg-Witten invariants of any rational homology sphere singularity link.

Poincaré series associated with surface singularities

We unify and generalize formulas obtained by Campillo, Delgado and Gusein-Zade in their series of articles. Positive results are established for rational and minimally elliptic singularities. By examples and counterexamples we also try to find the `limits' of these identities. Connections with the Seiberg-Witten Invariant Conjecture and Semigroup Density Conjecture are discussed.

Resolution graphs of some surface singularities I. (cyclic coverings)

The article starts with some introductory material about resolution graphs of normal surface singularities (definitions, topological/homological properties, etc). We then discuss the case when the normal surface singularity is an N-fold cyclic covering of a surface germ, branched along a curve given by the germ of an analytic function f. We present non-trivial examples in order to show that from the embedded resolution graph G of f in general it is not possible to recover the resolution graph of the cyclic covering. The main results are the construction of a ``universal covering graph'' from the topology of the germ f, and the completely combinatorial construction of the resolution graph of cyclic coverings from this universal graph of f and the integer N. For this we also prove some purely graph-theoretical classification theorems of ``covering graphs''. In the last part, we connect the properties of the universal covering graph with the topological invariants of f, e.g. with the nilpotent part of its algebraic monodromy.

Resolution graphs of some surface singularities II. (generalized Iomdin series)

In this article we give a construction of the resolution graphs of hypersurface surface singularities (X_k,0) given by generalized Iomdin series. All these resolution graphs are coordinated by an ``universal bi-colored graph'' which is associated with the ICIS determining the Iomdin series. The definition of this new graph is rather involved, and in concrete examples it is difficult to compute. Nevertheless, we present a large number of examples. This is very helpful in the exemplification of its properties as well. We then present a construction of the resolution graphs of the surface singularities above which uses the "universal bi-coloured graph" and the integer k. This is formulated in a purely combinatorial algorithm. The result is a highly non-trivial generalization of the case of cyclic coverings of smooth surfaces.

Topology of algebraic varieties

Let Y be a normal crossing divisor in the smooth projective algebraic variety X (defined over ${\mathbb C}$) and let U be a tubular neighbourhood of Y in X. We construct homological cycles generating $H_*(A,B)$, where (A,B) is one of the following pairs $(Y,\emptyset)$, (X,Y), (X,X-Y), $(X-Y,\emptyset)$ and $(\partial U,\emptyset)$. The construction is compatible with the weights in $H_*(A,B,{\mathbb Q})$ of Deligne's mixed Hodge structure.
