Existence theorem on the UV limit of Wilsonian RG flows of Feynman measures

In nonperturbative formulation of Euclidean signature quantum field theory (QFT), the vacuum state is characterized by the Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) flow of Feynman measures. Such an RG flow is a family of Feynman measures on the space of ultraviolet (UV) regularized fields, linked by the Wilsonian renormalization group equation. In this paper we show that under mild conditions, a Wilsonian RG flow of Feynman measures extending to arbitrary regularization strengths has a factorization property: there exists an ultimate Feynman measure (UV limit) on the distribution sense fields, such that the regularized instances in the flow are obtained from this UV limit via taking the marginal measure against the regulator. Existence theorems on the flow and UV limit of the corresponding action functional are also discussed.

Novel method for in-situ drift velocity measurement in large volume TPCs: the Geometry Reference Chamber of the NA61/SHINE experiment at CERN

This paper presents a novel method for low maintenance, low ambiguity in-situ drift velocity monitoring in large volume Time Projection Chambers (TPCs). The method was developed and deployed for the 40m^3 TPC tracker system of the NA61/SHINE experiment at CERN, which has a one meter of drift length. The method relies on a low-cost multi-wire proportional chamber placed next to the TPC to be monitored, downstream with respect to the particle flux. Reconstructed tracks in the TPC are matched to hits in the monitoring chamber, called the Geometry Reference Chamber (GRC). Relative differences in positions of hits in the GRC are used to estimate the drift velocity, removing the need for an accurate alignment of the TPC to the GRC. An important design requirement on the GRC was minimal added complexity to the existing system, in particular, compatibility with Front-End Electronics cards already used to read out the TPCs. Moreover, the GRC system was designed to operate both in large and small particle fluxes. The system is capable of monitoring the evolution of the drift velocity inside the TPC down to a one permil precision, with a few minutes of data collection.

On the running and the UV limit of Wilsonian renormalization group flows

In nonperturbative formulation of quantum field theory (QFT), the vacuum state is characterized by the Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) flow of Feynman type field correlators. Such a flow is a parametric family of ultraviolet (UV) regularized field correlators, the parameter being the strength of the UV regularization, and the instances with different strength of UV regularizations are linked by the renormalization group equation (RGE). Important RG flows are those which reach out to any UV regularization strengths. In this paper it is shown that for these flows a natural, mathematically rigorous generally covariant definition can be given, and that they form a topological vector space which is Hausdorff, locally convex, complete, nuclear, semi-Montel, Schwartz. That is, they form a generalized function space having favorable properties, similar to multivariate distributions. The other theorem proved in the paper is that for Wilsonian RG flows reaching out to all UV regularization strengths, a simple factorization formula holds in case of bosonic fields over flat (affine) spacetime: the flow always originates from a regularization-independent distributional correlator, and its running satisfies an algebraic ansatz. The conjecture is that this factorization theorem should generically hold, which is worth future investigations.

On generally covariant mathematical formulation of Feynman integral in Lorentz signature

It is widely accepted that the Feynman integral is one of the most promising methodologies for defining a generally covariant formulation of nonperturbative interacting quantum field theories (QFTs) without a fixed prearranged causal background. Recent literature suggests that if the spacetime metric is not fixed, e.g. because it is to be quantized along with the other fields, one may not be able to avoid considering the Feynman integral in the original Lorentz signature, without Wick rotation. Several mathematical phenomena are known, however, which are at some point showstoppers to a mathematically sound definition of Feynman integral in Lorentz signature. The Feynman integral formulation, however, is known to have a differential reformulation, called to be the master Dyson--Schwinger (MDS) equation for the field correlators. In this paper it is shown that a particular presentation of the MDS equation can be cast into a mathematically rigorously defined form: the involved function spaces and operators can be strictly defined and their properties can be established. Therefore, MDS equation can serve as a substitute for the Feynman integral, in a mathematically sound formulation of constructive QFT, in arbitrary signature, without a fixed background causal structure. It is also shown that even in such a generally covariant setting, there is a canonical way to define the Wilsonian regularization of the MDS equation. The main result of the paper is a necessary and sufficient condition for the regularized MDS solution space to be nonempty, for conformally invariant Lagrangians. This theorem also provides an iterative approximation algorithm for obtaining regularized MDS solutions, and is guaranteed to be convergent whenever the solution space is nonempty. The algorithm could eventually serve as a method for putting Lorentz signature QFTs onto lattice, in the original metric signature.

Nilpotent symmetries as a mechanism for Grand Unification

In the classic Coleman--Mandula no-go theorem which prohibits the unification of internal and spacetime symmetries, the assumption of the existence of a positive definite invariant scalar product on the Lie algebra of the internal group is essential. If one instead allows the scalar product to be positive semi-definite, this opens new possibilities for unification of gauge and spacetime symmetries. It follows from theorems on the structure of Lie algebras, that in the case of unified symmetries, the degenerate directions of the positive semi-definite invariant scalar product have to correspond to local symmetries with nilpotent generators. In this paper we construct a workable minimal toy model making use of this mechanism: it admits unified local symmetries having a compact -- U(1) -- component, a Lorentz -- SL(2,C) -- component, and a nilpotent component gluing these together. The construction is such that the full unified symmetry group acts locally and faithfully on the matter field sector, whereas the gauge fields which would correspond to the nilpotent generators can be transformed out from the theory, leaving gauge fields only with compact charges. It is shown that already the ordinary Dirac equation admits an extremely simple prototype example for the above gauge field elimination mechanism: it has a local symmetry with corresponding eliminable gauge field, related to the dilatation group. The outlined symmetry unification mechanism can be used to by-pass the Coleman--Mandula and related no-go theorems in a way that is fundamentally different from supersymmetry. In particular, the mechanism avoids invocation of super-coordinates or extra dimensions for the underlying spacetime manifold.

A hidden symmetry of conformally invariant Lagrangians

In this paper a hidden extra symmetry of conformally invariant Lagrangians occuring in physics is pointed out. This symmetry is most apparent in a metric independent, i.e. in a Palatini-like presentation of the variational problem. In such presentation, the usual conformal weight of fields can be encoded as local dilatation group gauge charges. The conventional conformal invariance of Lagrangians is then equivalent to dilatation gauge invariance. The claim of the paper is, that the most commonly occurring conformally invariant Lagrangians turning up in physics are not only invariant to local dilatation gauge transformations, but they are also invariant to any change of the dilatation gauge connection, meaning an additional algebraic symmetry property. In terms of dimensional analysis and differential geometry, this additional symmetry means complete insensitivity of the Lagrangian to the choice of the parallel transport rule of local measurement units throughout spacetime.

Clarification on theoretical predictions for general relativistic effects in frozen spin storage rings

Electromagnetic moments of particles carry important information on their internal structure, as well as on the structure of the effective Lagrangian describing their underlying field theory. One of the cleanest observable of such kind is the electric dipole moment (EDM), since Standard Model estimates would imply very small, much less then 10^-30 ecm value for that quantity, whereas several Beyond Standard Model (BSM) theories happen to predict of the order of 10^-28 ecm EDM for elementary or hadronic particles. So far, precision EDM upper bounds are mainly available for neutrons via cold neutron experiments, and indirect measurements for electrons. Therefore, in the recent year there has been a growing interest for direct measurement of EDM for charged particles, such as electrons, protons, muons or light nuclei. Such measurements become possible in relativistic storage rings, called frozen spin storage rings. Many environmental factors give systematic backgrounds to the EDM signal, including General Relativity (GR), due to the gravitational field of the Earth. It turns out that, depending of the experimental scenario, the GR effect can be well above the planned EDM sensitivity. Therefore, it is both of concern as a source of systematics, as well as it can serve as a spin-off experiment for an independent test of GR. There are a handful of theoretical papers quantifying the GR systematics, delivering slightly different results. The aim of this paper is to clarify these claims, eventually try to reconcile these predictions, and to deduce their experimental implications. The closing section of the paper quantifies the field imperfection systematic error cancellation in the case of a so-called doubly-frozen spin storage ring setting, in the idealized axial symmetric limit.

General relativity experiment with frozen spin rings

In experimental proposals published in the last two decades, a so called frozen spin storage ring concept was proposed for setting upper experimental bounds to electric dipole moment (EDM) of elementary particles. In a recent paper of ours, a fully covariant general relativistic (GR) calculation was presented on the Earth's gravitational modification effect in such mixed magnetic-electric frozen spin storage ring on the spin transport, which could contribute to such measurement. It was shown that similarly to an EDM signal, GR causes a spin precession out of the orbital plane, under the frozen spin condition. The rate of the vertical polarization buildup is predicted to be -a*beta*gamma*g/c, where g is the gravitational acceleration on the surface of the Earth, c is the speed of light, beta*gamma is the particle momentum over mass, and 'a' is its magnetic moment anomaly. It is seen that the effect increases unboundedly with the Lorentz factor gamma. Moreover, it is proportional to the magnetic moment anomaly 'a'. This paper mainly addresses the experimental perspectives to detect this effect in a realistic frozen spin storage ring configuration. Such a measurement would provide a novel test of GR, sampling the tensorial nature of GR at a microscopic level, as acting on the spin vector of elementary particles. The conclusion is that the pertinent GR experiment seems to be realistic with large magnetic moment anomaly particles, such as tritons, helion3 or protons, whereas it is not realistic with small magnetic moment anomaly particles, such as deuterons, muons or electrons.

Possible alternative mechanism to SUSY: conservative extensions of the Poincaré group

A group theoretical mechanism is outlined, which can indecomposably extend the Poincaré group by the compact internal (gauge) symmetries at the price of allowing some nilpotent (or, more precisely: solvable) internal symmetries in addition. Due to the presence of this nilpotent part, the prohibitive argument of the well known Coleman-Mandula and McGlinn no-go theorems do not go through. In contrast to SUSY or extended SUSY, in our construction the symmetries extending the Poincaré group will be all internal, i.e. they do not act on the spacetime, merely on some internal degrees of freedom -- hence the name: conservative extensions of the Poincaré group. Using the Levi decomposition and O'Raifeartaigh theorem, the general structure of all possible conservative extensions of the Poincaré group is outlined, and a concrete example group is presented with U(1) being the compact gauge group component. It is argued that such nilpotent internal symmetries may be inapparent symmetries of some more fundamental field variables, and therefore do not carry an ab initio contradiction with the present experimental understanding in particle physics. The construction is compared to (extended) SUSY, since SUSY is somewhat analogous to the proposed mechanism. It is pointed out, however, that the proposed mechanism is less irregular in comparison to SUSY, in certain aspects. The only exoticity needed in comparison to a traditional gauge theory setting is that the full group of internal symmetries is not purely compact, but is a semi-direct product of a nilpotent and of a compact part.

Quantification of GR effects in muon g-2, EDM and other spin precession experiments

Recently, Morishima, Futamase and Shimizu published a series of manuscripts, putting forward arguments, based on a post-Newtonian approximative calculation, that there can be a sizable general relativistic (GR) correction in the experimental determination of the muon magnetic moment based on spin precession, i.e., in muon g-2 experiments. In response, other authors argued that the effect must be much smaller than claimed. Further authors argued that the effect exactly cancels. Also, the known formulae for de Sitter and Lense-Thirring effect do not apply due to the non-geodesic motion. All this indicates that it is difficult to estimate from first principles the influence of GR corrections in the problem of spin propagation. Therefore, in this paper we present a full general relativistic calculation in order to quantify this effect. The main methodology is the purely differential geometrical tool of Fermi-Walker transport over a Schwarzschild background. Also the Larmor precession due to the propagation in the electromagnetic field of the experimental apparatus is included. For the muon g-2 experiments the GR correction turns out to be very small, well below the present sensitivity. However, in other similar storage ring experimental settings, such as electric dipole moment (EDM) search experiments, where the so-called frozen spin method is used, GR gives a well detectable effect, and should be corrected for. All frozen spin scenarios are affected which intend to reach a sensitivity of 0.1 microradians/second for the spin precession in the vertical plane.

Unification mechanism for gauge and spacetime symmetries

A group theoretical mechanism for unification of local gauge and spacetime symmetries is introduced. No-go theorems prohibiting such unification are circumvented by slightly relaxing the usual requirement on the gauge group: only the so called Levi factor of the gauge group needs to be compact semisimple, not the entire gauge group. This allows a non-conventional supersymmetry-like extension of the gauge group, glueing together the gauge and spacetime symmetries, but not needing any new exotic gauge particles. It is shown that this new relaxed requirement on the gauge group is nothing but the minimal condition for energy positivity. The mechanism is demonstrated to be mathematically possible and physically plausible on a U(1) based gauge theory setting. The unified group, being an extension of the group of spacetime symmetries, is shown to be different than that of the conventional supersymmetry group, thus overcoming the McGlinn and Coleman-Mandula no-go theorems in a non-supersymmetric way.

Convergence and error propagation results on a linear iterative unfolding method

Unfolding problems often arise in the context of statistical data analysis. Such problematics occur when the probability distribution of a physical quantity is to be measured, but it is randomized (smeared) by some well understood process, such as a non-ideal detector response or a well described physical phenomenon. In such case it is said that the original probability distribution of interest is folded by a known response function. The reconstruction of the original probability distribution from the measured one is called unfolding. That technically involves evaluation of the non-bounded inverse of an integral operator over the space of L^1 functions, which is known to be an ill-posed problem. For the pertinent regularized operator inversion, we propose a linear iterative formula and provide proof of convergence in a probability theory context. Furthermore, we provide formulae for error estimates at finite iteration stopping order which are of utmost importance in practical applications: the approximation error, the propagated statistical error, and the propagated systematic error can be quantified. The arguments are based on the Riesz-Thorin theorem mapping the original L^1 problem to L^2 space, and subsequent application of ordinary L^2 spectral theory of operators. A library implementation in C of the algorithm along with corresponding error propagation is also provided. A numerical example also illustrates the method in operation.

Single electron multiplication distribution in GEM avalanches

In this paper, measurement results and experimental methodology are presented on the determination of multiplication distributions of avalanches initiated by single electron in GEM foils. The measurement relies on the amplification of photoelectrons by the GEM under study, which is subsequently amplified in an MWPC for signal enhancement and readout. The intrinsic detector resolution, namely the sigma-over-mean ratio of the multiplication. distribution is also elaborated. Small gain dependence of the shape of the avalanche response distribution is observed in the range of net effective gain of 15 to 100. The distribution has an exponentially decaying tail at large amplitudes. At small amplitudes, the applied working gas is seen to have a well visible effect on the shape of the multiplication distribution. Equivalently, the working gas has an influence on the intrinsic detector resolution of GEMs via suppression of the low amplitude responses. A sigma-over-mean ratio of 0.75 was reached using a neon based mixture, whereas other gases provided an intrinsic detector resolution closer to 1, meaning a multiplication distribution closer to the low-field limit exponential case.

A natural extension of the conformal Lorentz group in a field theory context

In this paper a finite dimensional unital associative algebra is presented, and its group of algebra automorphisms is detailed. The studied algebra can physically be understood as the creation operator algebra in a formal quantum field theory at fixed momentum for a spin 1/2 particle along with its antiparticle. It is shown that the essential part of the corresponding automorphism group can naturally be related to the conformal Lorentz group. In addition, the non-semisimple part of the automorphism group can be understood as "dressing" of the pure one-particle states. The studied mathematical structure may help in constructing quantum field theories in a non-perturbative manner. In addition, it provides a simple example of circumventing Coleman-Mandula theorem using non-semisimple groups, without SUSY.

Design and Performance of the Data Acquisition System for the NA61/SHINE Experiment at CERN

This paper describes the hardware, firmware and software systems used in data acquisition for the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator. Special emphasis is given to the design parameters of the readout electronics for the 40m^3 volume Time Projection Chamber detectors, as these give the largest contribution to event data among all the subdetectors: events consisting of 8bit ADC values from 256 timeslices of 200k electronic channels are to be read out with ~100Hz rate. The data acquisition system is organized in "push-data mode", i.e. local systems transmit data asynchronously. Techniques of solving subevent synchronization are also discussed.

A Linear Iterative Unfolding Method

A frequently faced task in experimental physics is to measure the probability distribution of some quantity. Often this quantity to be measured is smeared by a non-ideal detector response or by some physical process. The procedure of removing this smearing effect from the measured distribution is called unfolding, and is a delicate problem in signal processing, due to the well-known numerical ill behavior of this task. Various methods were invented which, given some assumptions on the initial probability distribution, try to regularize the unfolding problem. Most of these methods definitely introduce bias into the estimate of the initial probability distribution. We propose a linear iterative method, which has the advantage that no assumptions on the initial probability distribution is needed, and the only regularization parameter is the stopping order of the iteration, which can be used to choose the best compromise between the introduced bias and the propagated statistical and systematic errors. The method is consistent: "binwise" convergence to the initial probability distribution is proved in absence of measurement errors under a quite general condition on the response function. This condition holds for practical applications such as convolutions, calorimeter response functions, momentum reconstruction response functions based on tracking in magnetic field etc. In presence of measurement errors, explicit formulae for the propagation of the three important error terms is provided: bias error, statistical error, and systematic error. A trade-off between these three error terms can be used to define an optimal iteration stopping criterion, and the errors can be estimated there. We provide a numerical C library for the implementation of the method, which incorporates automatic statistical error propagation as well.

On the Use of Multipole Expansion in Time Evolution of Non-linear Dynamical Systems and Some Surprises Related to Superradiance

A new numerical method is introduced to study the problem of time evolution of generic non-linear dynamical systems in four-dimensional spacetimes. It is assumed that the time level surfaces are foliated by a one-parameter family of codimension two compact surfaces with no boundary and which are conformal to a Riemannian manifold C. The method is based on the use of a multipole expansion determined uniquely by the induced metric structure on C. The approach is fully spectral in the angular directions. The dynamics in the complementary 1+1 Lorentzian spacetime is followed by making use of a fourth order finite differencing scheme with adaptive mesh refinement. In checking the reliability of the introduced new method the evolution of a massless scalar field on a fixed Kerr spacetime is investigated. In particular, the angular distribution of the evolving field in to be superradiant scattering is studied. The primary aim was to check the validity of some of the recent arguments claiming that the Penrose process, or its field theoretical correspondence---superradiance---does play crucial role in jet formation in black hole spacetimes while matter accretes onto the central object. Our findings appear to be on contrary to these claims as the angular dependence of a to be superradiant scattering of a massless scalar field does not show any preference of the axis of rotation. In addition, the process of superradiance, in case of a massless scalar field, was also investigated. On contrary to the general expectations no energy extraction from black hole was found even though the incident wave packets was fine tuned to be maximally superradiant. Instead of energy extraction the to be superradiant part of the incident wave packet fails to reach the ergoregion rather it suffers a total reflection which appears to be a new phenomenon.
