Energy dependence of transverse particle production from SPS to RHIC

Transverse momentum spectra up to 4.5 GeV/c were measured around midrapidity in Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3 GeV, for pi^{+/-}, p, pbar and K^{+/-}, by the NA49 experiment. The nuclear modification factors R_{AA}, R_{AA/pA} and R_{CP} were extracted and are compared to RHIC results at sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV. The modification factor R_{AA} shows a rapid increase with transverse momentum in the covered region. The modification factors R_{AA/pA} and R_{CP} shows a saturation well below unity in the pi^{+/-} channel. The extracted R_{CP} values follow the 200 GeV RHIC results closely in the available transverse momentum range for all particle species, except for pi^{+/-}. For pi^{+/-} above 2.5 GeV/c transverse momentum, the measured suppression is smaller than that observed at RHIC. The K^{+}/pi^{+} and K^{-}/pi^{-} ratios were also extracted from the data and are compared to the 200 GeV RHIC results. The values of the former ratio is above, whereas the values of the latter ratio is slightly below the 200 GeV RHIC points.

Nuclear modification at sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3 GeV, measured at NA49

Na61/Shine at the CERN SPS

Status of the new experimental program to study hadron production in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN SPS will be presented. In particular, a detailed physics motivation and experimental strategy will be given for the part of the program related to the physics of strongly interacting matter: search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter, study properties of the onset of deconfinement, and high p_T measurements in p+p and p+A interactions. The planned measurements for the neutrino T2K and cosmic-ray experiments will also be discussed.

New results and perspectives on R_{AA} measurements below 20 GeV CM-energy at fixed target machines

Transverse momentum spectra of pi^{+/-} at midrapidity are measured at high p_T in p+p and p+Pb collisions at 158 GeV/nucleon beam energy by the NA49 experiment. This study is complementary to our previous results on the same spectra from Pb+Pb collisions. The nuclear modification factors R_{A+A/p+p}, R_{p+A/p+p} and R_{A+A/p+A} as a function of p_T are extracted and compared to RHIC measurements, thus providing insight into the energy dependence of nuclear modification. The modification factor R_{A+A/p+A} proved to be consistent with our previous results on the central to peripheral modification factor R_{CP}. The limitation of our current p_T range is discussed and planned future upgrades are outlined. Some aspects of the FAIR-CBM experiment are also presented as a natural future continuation of the measurements at very high p_T.

Mass gap from pressure inequalities

We prove that a temperature independent mass distribution is identically zero below a mass threshold (mass gap) value, if the pressure satisfies certain inequalities. This supports the finding of a minimal mass in quark matter equation of state by numerical estimates and by substitution of analytic formulas. We present a few inequalities for the mass distribution based on the Markov inequality.

High p_T Spectra of Identified Particles Produced in Pb+Pb Collisions at 158A GeV Beam Energy

Results of the NA49 collaboration on the production of hadrons with large transverse momentum in Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV beam energy are presented. A range up to p_T = 4 GeV/c is covered. The nuclear modification factor R_CP is extracted for pions, kaons and protons, and the baryon to meson ratios p/pi+, pbar/pi- and Lambda/K^0_s are studied. All results are compared to other measurements at SPS and RHIC and to theoretical calculations.
