Moreau-Yosida-based Kohn-Sham Inversion for Periodic Systems

Density-potential inversion for periodic systems within Moreau-Yosida-regularised density-functional theory is investigated, both theoretically and numerically. We develop the framework in a periodic homogeneous Sobolev space and use it to recover the exchange-correlation potential of Kohn-Sham theory through a limiting procedure. A key analytical ingredient is the proof of lower semicontinuity of the non-interacting kinetic-energy functional in the chosen topology. The proximal mapping, together with its algorithmic evaluation, plays a central role in the resulting inversion scheme. Numerical experiments illustrate the performance and properties of the method for both the Kohn-Sham and Gross-Pitaevskii equations.

Perspective on Moreau-Yosida Regularization in Density-Functional Theory

Within density-functional theory, Moreau-Yosida regularization enables both a reformulation of the theory and a mathematically well-defined definition of the Kohn-Sham approach. It is further employed in density-potential inversion schemes and, through the choice of topology for the density and potential space, can be directly linked to classical field theories. This perspective collects various appearances of the regularization technique within density-functional theory alongside possibilities for their future development.

The non-uniform electron gas

The non-uniform (or inhomogeneous) electron gas has received much attention in many-body quantum mechanics and quantum chemistry in the early days of density functional theory, mainly as a theoretical device to construct gradient approximations via linear response theory. In this article, motivated by the recent works of Lewin, Lieb and Seiringer, we propose a definition of the quantum (resp. classical) non-uniform electron gas through the use of the grand-canonical Levy-Lieb functional (resp. the grand-canonical strictly correlated electrons functional), establish these systems as rigorous thermodynamic limits and analyze their basic properties. The non-uniformity of the gas comes from an arbitrary lattice-periodic background density.

A quantitative Hohenberg-Kohn theorem and the unexpected regularity of density functional theory in one spatial dimension

In this paper we investigate the (Kohn-Sham) density-to-potential map in the case of spinless fermions in one spatial dimension, whose existence has been rigorously established by the first author in [arXiv:2504.05501 (2025)]. Here, we focus on the regularity of this map as a function of the density and the coupling constant in front of the interaction term. More precisely, we first prove a quantitative version of the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem, thereby showing that this map is Lipschitz continuous with respect to the natural Sobolev norms in the space of densities and potentials. In particular, this implies that the inverse (Kohn-Sham) problem is not only well-posed but also Lipschitz stable. Using this result, we then show that the density-to-potential map is in fact real analytic with respect to both the density and the interaction strength. As a consequence, we obtain a holomorphic extension of the universal constrained-search functional to a suitable subset of complex-valued densities. This partially extends the DFT framework to non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators. As further applications of these results, we also establish the existence of an exchange-only part of the exchange-correlation potential, and justify the Görling-Levy perturbation expansion for the correlation energy.

Neural network approximation of regularized density functionals

Density functional theory is one of the most efficient and widely used computational methods of quantum mechanics, especially in fields such as solid state physics and quantum chemistry. From the theoretical perspecive, its central object is the universal density functional which contains all intrinsic information about the quantum system in question. Once the external potential is provided, in principle one can obtain the exact ground-state energy via a simple minimization. However, the universal density functional is a very complicated mathematical object and almost always it is replaced with its approximate variants. So far, no ``first principles'', mathematically consistent and convergent approximation procedure has been devised that has general applicability. In this paper, we propose such a procedure by first applying Moreau--Yosida regularization to make the exact functionals continuous (even differentiable) and then approximate the regularized functional by a neural network. The resulting neural network preserves the positivity and convexity of the exact functionals. More importantly, it is differentiable, so it can be directly used in a Kohn--Sham calculation.

Regularised density-potential inversion for periodic systems: application to exact exchange in one dimension

A detailed convex analysis-based formulation of density-functional theory for periodic systems in arbitrary dimensions is presented. The electron-electron interaction is taken to be of Yukawa type, harmonising with underlying function spaces for densities and wave functions. Moreau--Yosida regularisation of the underlying non-interacting density functionals is then considered, allowing us to recast the Hohenberg--Kohn mapping in a form that is insensitive to perturbations (non-expansiveness) and lends itself to numerical implementation. The general theory is exemplified with a numerical Hartree--Fock implementation for one-dimensional systems. We discuss in particular the challenge of self-consistent field optimisation in calculations related to the regularised noninteracting Hohenberg--Kohn map. The implementation is used to demonstrate that it is practically feasible to recover local Kohn--Sham potentials reproducing the effects of exact exchange within this scheme, which provides a proof-of-principle for recovering the exchange-correlation potential at more accurate levels of theory. Error analysis is performed for the regularised inverse Kohn--Sham algorithm by quantifying, both theoretically and numerically, how perturbations of the input ground-state density propagate through the regularised density-to-potential map.

Adaptation of Moreau-Yosida regularization to the modulus of convexity

We study a generalization of Moreau-Yosida regularization that is adapted to the geometry of Banach spaces where the dual space is uniformly convex with modulus of convexity of power type. Important properties for regularized convex functions are given, in particular strong monotonicity of the subdifferential of their convex conjugate and Hölder-continuity of their gradient.

Kohn-Sham inversion with mathematical guarantees

We use an exact Moreau-Yosida regularized formulation to obtain the exchange-correlation potential for periodic systems. We reveal a profound connection between rigorous mathematical principles and efficient numerical implementation, which marks the first computation of a Moreau-Yosida-based inversion for physical systems. We develop a mathematically rigorous inversion algorithm which is demonstrated for representative bulk materials, specifically bulk silicon, gallium arsenide, and potassium chloride. Our inversion algorithm allows the construction of rigorous error bounds that we are able to verify numerically. This unlocks a new pathway to analyze Kohn-Sham inversion methods, which we expect in turn to foster mathematical approaches for developing approximate functionals.

Density-functional theory for the Dicke Hamiltonian

A detailed analysis of density-functional theory for quantum-electrodynamical model systems is provided. In particular, the quantum Rabi model, the Dicke model, and a generalization of the latter to multiple modes are considered. We prove a Hohenberg-Kohn theorem that manifests the magnetization and displacement as internal variables, along with several representability results. The constrained-search functionals for pure states and ensembles are introduced and analyzed. We find the optimizers for the pure-state constrained-search functional to be low-lying eigenstates of the Hamiltonian and, based on the properties of the optimizers, we formulate an adiabatic-connection formula. In the reduced case of the Rabi model we can even show differentiability of the universal density functional, which amounts to unique pure-state v-representability.

Convergence of the regularized Kohn-Sham iteration in Banach spaces

The Kohn-Sham iteration of generalized density-functional theory on Banach spaces with Moreau-Yosida regularized universal Lieb functional and an adaptive damping step is shown to converge to the correct ground-state density. This result demands state spaces for (quasi)densities and potentials that are uniformly convex with modulus of convexity of power type. The Moreau-Yosida regularization is adapted to match the geometry of the spaces and some convex analysis results are extended to this type of regularization. Possible connections between regularization and physical effects are pointed out as well. The proof of convergence presented here (Theorem 23) contains a critical mistake that has been noted and fixed for the finite-dimensional case in arXiv:1903.09579. Yet, the proposed correction is not straightforwardly generalizable to a setting of infinite-dimensional Banach spaces. This means the question of convergence in such a case is still left open. We present this draft as a collection of techniques and ideas for a possible altered, successful demonstration of convergence of the Kohn--Sham iteration in Banach spaces.

Quantum-Electrodynamical Density-Functional Theory Exemplified by the Quantum Rabi Model

The key features of density-functional theory (DFT) within a minimalistic implementation of quantum electrodynamics are demonstrated, thus allowing to study elementary properties of quantum-electrodynamical density-functional theory (QEDFT). We primarily employ the quantum Rabi model, that describes a two-level system coupled to a single photon mode, and also discuss the Dicke model, where multiple two-level systems couple to the same photon mode. In these settings, the density variables of the system are the polarization and the displacement of the photon field. We give analytical expressions for the constrained-search functional and the exchange-correlation potential and compare to established results from QEDFT. We further derive a form for the adiabatic connection that is almost explicit in the density variables, up to only a non-explicit correlation term that gets bounded both analytically and numerically. This allows several key features of DFT to be studied without approximations.

Exchange-only virial relation from the adiabatic connection

The exchange-only virial relation due to Levy and Perdew is revisited. Invoking the adiabatic connection, we introduce the exchange energy in terms of the right-derivative of the universal density functional w.r.t. the coupling strength $λ$ at $λ=0$. This agrees with the Levy-Perdew definition of the exchange energy as a high-density limit of the full exchange-correlation energy. By relying on $v$-representability for a fixed density at varying coupling strength, we prove an exchange-only virial relation without an explicit local-exchange potential. Instead, the relation is in terms of a limit ($λ\searrow 0$) involving the exchange-correlation potential $v_\mathrm{xc}^λ$, which exists by assumption of $v$-representability. On the other hand, a local-exchange potential $v_\mathrm{x}$ is not warranted to exist as such a limit.

Thermodynamic limit for the magnetic uniform electron gas and representability of density-current pairs

Although the concept of the uniform electron gas is essential to quantum physics, it has only been defined recently in a rigorous manner by Lewin, Lieb and Seiringer. We extend their approach to include the magnetic case, by which we mean that the vorticity of the gas is also held constant. Our definition involves the grand-canonical version of the universal functional introduced by Vignale and Rasolt in the context of current-density-functional theory. Besides establishing the existence of the thermodynamic limit, we derive an estimate on the kinetic energy functional that also gives a convenient answer to the (mixed) current-density representability problem.

Exchange energies with forces in density-functional theory

We propose exchanging the energy functionals in ground-state DFT with physically equivalent exact force expressions as a new promising route towards approximations to the exchange-correlation potential and energy. In analogy to the usual energy-based procedure, we split the force difference between the interacting and auxiliary Kohn-Sham system into a Hartree, an exchange, and a correlation force. The corresponding scalar potential is obtained by solving a Poisson equation, while an additional transverse part of the force yields a vector potential. These vector potentials obey an exact constraint between the exchange and correlation contribution and can further be related to the atomic-shell structure. Numerically, the force-based local-exchange potential and the corresponding exchange energy compare well with the numerically more involved optimized effective-potential method. Overall, the force-based method has several benefits when compared to the usual energy-based approach and opens a route towards numerically inexpensive non-local and (in the time-dependent case) non-adiabatic approximations.

The structure of the density-potential mapping. Part II: Including magnetic fields

The Hohenberg-Kohn theorem of density-functional theory (DFT) is broadly considered the conceptual basis for a full characterization of an electronic system in its ground state by just the one-body particle density. In this Part~II of a series of two articles, we aim at clarifying the status of this theorem within different extensions of DFT including magnetic fields. We will in particular discuss current-density-functional theory (CDFT) and review the different formulations known in the literature, including the conventional paramagnetic CDFT and some non-standard alternatives. For the former, it is known that the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem is no longer valid due to counterexamples. Nonetheless, paramagnetic CDFT has the mathematical framework closest to standard DFT and, just like in standard DFT, non-differentiability of the density functional can be mitigated through Moreau-Yosida regularization. Interesting insights can be drawn from both Maxwell-Schrödinger DFT and quantum-electrodynamical DFT, which are also discussed here.

Homotopy continuation methods for coupled-cluster theory in quantum chemistry

Homotopy methods have proven to be a powerful tool for understanding the multitude of solutions provided by the coupled-cluster polynomial equations. This endeavor has been pioneered by quantum chemists that have undertaken both elaborate numerical as well as mathematical investigations. Recently, from the perspective of applied mathematics, new interest in these approaches has emerged using both topological degree theory and algebraically oriented tools. This article provides an overview of describing the latter development.

Density-potential inversion from Moreau-Yosida regularization

For a quantum-mechanical many-electron system, given a density, the Zhao-Morrison-Parr method allows to compute the effective potential that yields precisely that density. In this work, we demonstrate how this and similar inversion procedures mathematically relate to the Moreau-Yosida regularization of density functionals on Banach spaces. It is shown that these inversion procedures can in fact be understood as a limit process as the regularization parameter approaches zero. This sheds new insight on the role of Moreau-Yosida regularization in density-functional theory and allows to systematically improve density-potential inversion. Our results apply to the Kohn-Sham setting with fractional occupation that determines an effective one-body potential that in turn reproduces an interacting density.

The structure of the density-potential mapping. Part I: Standard density-functional theory

The Hohenberg-Kohn theorem of density-functional theory (DFT) is broadly considered the conceptual basis for a full characterization of an electronic system in its ground state by just the one-body particle density. Part I of this review aims at clarifying the status of the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem within DFT and Part II at different extensions of the theory that include magnetic fields. We collect evidence that the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem does not so much form the basis of DFT, but is rather the consequence of a more comprehensive mathematical framework. Such results are especially useful when it comes to the construction of generalized DFTs.
