Disorder-Induced Enhancement of Fermionic Superradiance

Collective light-matter phenomena such as Dicke superradiance are often described as a collection of effective spins coupled homogeneously to a bosonic mode, giving rise to a collective bright mode with enhanced light-matter coupling. In fermionic systems, Pauli exclusion and Fermi-surface structure can significantly modify this picture, while randomness in the atom-light couplings raises the question of whether disorder promotes or suppresses collective behavior. Here, we study a cavity model in which fermionic particles couple to a photonic mode through a random all-to-all interaction matrix with tunable mean and variance. Combining numerical mean-field methods, analytic stability analysis and random-matrix predictions, and benchmarks against exact diagonalization, we characterize both the onset and structure of the superradiant phase. While mean coupling and disorder variance contribute in the same way to the onset, they lead to drastically different behavior within the condensed phase. Uniform coupling supports a single bright collective fermionic mode with conventional Dicke-like scaling of the cavity field. Disorder, instead, gives rise to a qualitatively different collective regime in which many grey fermionic states participate coherently, producing a parametrically enhanced scaling of the condensate with system size. Our results reveal a mechanism through which disorder can, perhaps counterintuitively, promote collective light-matter phenomena.

From single-particle to many-body chaos in Yukawa--SYK: theory and a cavity-QED proposal

Understanding how quantum systems transition from integrable to fully chaotic behavior remains a central open problem in physics. The Sachdev--Ye--Kitaev (SYK) model provides a paradigmatic framework for studying many-body chaos and holography, yet it captures only the strongly correlated limit, leaving intermediate regimes unexplored. Here, we investigate the Yukawa--SYK (YSYK) model, where bosonic fields mediate random fermionic interactions, and demonstrate that it naturally bridges single-particle and many-body chaos. Using spectral and dynamical chaos markers, we perform a comprehensive finite-size characterization of the YSYK model. We show that the interaction strength acts as a tunable control parameter interpolating between the SYK$_2$ and SYK$_4$ limits, and introduce a framework enabling direct and quantitative comparison with these benchmark models. In the intermediate regimes, we uncover distinct dynamical regimes marked by partial ergodicity breaking, prethermalization plateaus, and incomplete scrambling. Finally, we propose a feasible optical-cavity implementation of the YSYK model using ultra-cold atoms. Our results establish the YSYK model as a unifying platform connecting single-particle and many-body chaos, paving the way for experimental observation of these phenomena.

Complexity transitions in chaotic quantum systems: Nonstabilizerness, entanglement, and fractal dimension in SYK and random matrix models

Complex quantum systems -- composed of many, interacting particles -- are intrinsically difficult to model. When a quantum many-body system is subject to disorder, it can undergo transitions to regimes with varying non-ergodic and localized behavior, which can significantly reduce the number of relevant basis states. It remains an open question whether such transitions are also directly related to an abrupt change in the system's complexity. In this work, we study the transition from chaotic to integrable phases in several paradigmatic models, the power-law random banded matrix model, the Rosenzweig--Porter model, and a hybrid SYK+Ising model, comparing three complementary complexity markers -- fractal dimension, von Neumann entanglement entropy, and stabilizer R\'enyi entropy. For all three markers, finite-size scaling reveals sharp transitions between high- and low-complexity regimes, which, however, can occur at different critical points. As a consequence, while in the ergodic and localized regimes the markers align, they diverge significantly in the presence of an intermediate fractal phase. Additionally, our analysis reveals that the stabilizer R\'enyi entropy is more sensitive to underlying many-body symmetries, such as fermion parity and time reversal, than the other markers. As our results show, different markers capture complementary facets of complexity, making it necessary to combine them to obtain a comprehensive diagnosis of phase transitions. The divergence between different complexity markers also has significant consequences for the classical simulability of chaotic many-body systems.

The moments of the spectral form factor in SYK

In chaotic quantum systems the spectral form factor exhibits a universal linear ramp and plateau structure with superimposed erratic oscillations. The mean signal and the statistics of the noise can be probed by the moments of the spectral form factor, also known as higher-point spectral form factors. We identify saddle points in the SYK model that describe the moments during the ramp region. Perturbative corrections around the saddle point indicate that SYK mimics random matrix statistics for the low order moments, while large deviations for the high order moments arise from fluctuations near the edge of the spectrum. The leading correction scales inversely with the number of random parameters in the SYK Hamiltonian and is amplified in a sparsified version of the SYK model, which we study numerically, even in regimes where a linear ramp persists. Finally, we study the $q=2$ SYK model, whose spectral form factor exhibits an exponential ramp with increased noise. These findings reveal how deviations from random matrix universality arise in disordered systems and motivate their interpretation from a bulk gravitational perspective.

Many-body spectral transitions through the lens of the variable-range SYK2 model

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a cornerstone in the study of quantum chaos and holographic quantum matter. Real-world implementations, however, deviate from the idealized all-to-all connectivity, raising questions about the robustness of its chaotic properties. In this work, we investigate a quadratic SYK model with distance-dependent interactions governed by a power-law decay. By analytically and numerically studying the spectral form factor (SFF), we uncover how transitions present in the single-particle limit carry over to the many-body system. Non-trivial cancellations in the one-loop contributions lead to a robustness of the SFF under a considerable reduction of the interaction range. Further suppression leads to a breakdown of perturbation theory around the infinite-range path-integral saddle and the appearance of new spectral regimes, marked by a higher dip and the emergence of a secondary plateau. Our results highlight the interplay between single-particle criticality and many-body dynamics, offering new insights into the quantum chaos-to-localization transition and its reflection in spectral statistics.

G-structures for black hole near-horizon geometries

We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for warped AdS$_2$ solutions of Type II supergravity to preserve ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry, in terms of bispinors. Such solutions generically support an SU$(3)$-structure on their internal manifold M$_8$, which can experience an enhancement to a G$_2$-structure. We perform an SU$(3)$-structure torsion classes analysis and express the fluxes and other physical fields in terms of these, in general. We use our results to derive two new classes of AdS$_2$ solutions. In (massive) Type IIA supergravity we derive an ${\mathcal N}=1$ supersymmetric class for which M$_8$ decomposes as a weak G$_2$-manifold foliated over an interval and which is locally defined in terms of a degree three polynomial. In Type IIB supergravity we find a class of AdS$_2\times\text{S}^2\times\text{CY}_2\timesΣ_2$ solutions preserving small ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetry, governed by a harmonic function on $Σ_2$ and partial differential equations reminiscent of D3-D7-brane configurations.

The Holographic Map of an Evaporating Black Hole

We construct a holographic map that takes the semi-classical state of an evaporating black hole and its Hawking radiation to a microscopic model that reflects the scrambling dynamics of the black hole. The microscopic model is given by a nested sequence of random unitaries, each one implementing a scrambling time step of the black hole evolution. Differently from other models, energy conservation and the thermal nature of the Hawking radiation are taken into account. We show that the QES formula follows for the entropy of multiple subsets of the radiation and black hole. We further show that a version of entanglement wedge reconstruction can be proved by computing suitable trace norms and quantum fidelities involving the action of a unitary on a subset of Hawking partners. If the Hawking partner is in an island, its unitary can be reconstructed by a unitary on the radiation. We also adopt a similar setup and analyse reconstruction of unitaries acting on an infalling system.

Massive flows in AdS$_6$/CFT$_5$

We study five-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ Superconformal Field Theories of the linear quiver type. These are deformed by a relevant operator, corresponding to a homogeneous mass term for certain matter fields. The free energy is calculated at arbitrary values of the mass parameter. After a careful regularisation procedure, the result can be put in correspondence with a calculation in the supergravity dual background. The F-theorem is verified for these flows, both in field theory and in supergravity. This letter presents some of the results in the companion paper arXiv:2211.13240.

Matrix Models and Holography: Mass Deformations of Long Quiver Theories in 5d and 3d

We enlarge the dictionary between matrix models for long linear quivers preserving eight supercharges in $d=5$ and $d=3$ and type IIB supergravity backgrounds with AdS$_{d+1}$ factors. We introduce mass deformations of the field theory that break the quiver into a collection of interacting linear quivers, which are decoupled at the end of the RG flow. We find and solve a Laplace problem in supergravity which realises these deformations holographically. The free energy and expectation values of antisymmetric Wilson loops are calculated on both sides of the proposed duality, finding agreement. Our matching procedure sheds light on the F-theorem in five dimensions.

Timelike structures of ten-dimensional supersymmetry

In several contexts, supersymmetry can be reformulated in terms of calibrations, namely forms whose integrals measure minimal energies. It has been conjectured that this should be possible in general. For type II supergravity, we present a new system of equations which realizes this expectation. Besides the customary D-brane calibrations, it also includes NS5-brane and KK5-monopole calibrations. It is equivalent to supersymmetry under the assumption that the Killing vector associated to supersymmetry is timelike. No assumption is made on a factorization of spacetime. We also obtain a version of the system which is manifestly S-invariant and we present an application to near-horizon backgrounds. Using calibration, a definition of central charges in purely gravitational terms is given.

Black Hole Information Recovery in JT Gravity

We consider the issue of information recovery for an object carrying energy and entropy into a black hole using the generalized entropy formalism, in the context of JT gravity where the backreaction problem can be solved exactly. We verify the main aspects of the Hayden-Preskill scenario but with some refinements. We show that the information is encoded in the Hawking radiation in a redundant way, as expected for a quantum error correcting code. We show how quantum extremal surfaces associated to information recovery have the form of a python's lunch and thereby show that the complexity of decoding is exponential in a combination of the entropy shift of the black hole and the entropy of the object. We also show that an infalling observer must have a smooth experience at the horizon and we calculate their endurance proper time inside the black hole before they are radiated out.

Ephemeral Islands, Plunging Quantum Extremal Surfaces and BCFT channels

We consider entanglement entropies of finite spatial intervals in Minkowski radiation baths coupled to the eternal black hole in JT gravity, and the related problem involving free fermion BCFT in the thermofield double state. We show that the non-monotonic entropy evolution in the black hole problem precisely matches that of the free fermion theory in a high temperature limit, and the results have the form expected for CFTs with quasiparticle description. Both exhibit rich behaviour that involves at intermediate times, an entropy saddle with an island in the former case, and in the latter a special class of disconnected OPE channels. The quantum extremal surfaces start inside the horizon, but can emerge from and plunge back inside as time evolves, accompanied by a characteristic dip in the entropy also seen in the free fermion BCFT. Finally an entropy equilibrium is reached with a no-island saddle.

Grey-body Factors, Irreversibility and Multiple Island Saddles

We consider the effect of grey-body factors on the entanglement island prescription for computing the entropy of an arbitrary subset of the Hawking radiation of an evaporating black hole. When there is a non-trivial grey-body factor, the modes reflected back into the black hole affect the position of the quantum extremal surfaces at a subleading level with respect to the scrambling time. The grey-body factor allows us to analyse the role of irreversibility in the evaporation. In particular, we show that irreversibility allows multiple saddles to dominate the entropy, rather than just two as expected on the basis of Page's theorem. We show that these multiple saddles can be derived from a generalization of Page's theorem that involves a nested temporal sequence of unitary averages. We then consider how irreversibility affects the monogamy entanglement problem.

Islands in the Stream of Hawking Radiation

We consider the island formula for the entropy of subsets of the Hawking radiation in the adiabatic limit where the evaporation is very slow. We find a simple concrete `on-shell' formula for the generalized entropy which involves the image of the island out in the stream of radiation, the `island in the stream'. The resulting recipe for the entropy allows us to calculate the quantum information properties of the radiation and verify various constraints including the Araki-Lieb inequality and strong subadditivity.

Holographic description of SCFT$_5$ compactifications

We present three infinite families of supersymmetric Type IIB backgrounds with AdS$_4$, AdS$_3$ and AdS$_2$ factors, dual to SCFTs in $3$, $2$ and $1$ space-time dimensions respectively. These field theories emerge at low energies, after a twisted compactification of a family of five dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ SCFTs on hyperbolic spaces. The holographic flows across dimensions are explicitly computed. We also discuss a family of SUSY breaking backgrounds, dual to a QCD-like quiver with massive (bi)fundamental matter. Some field theoretical observables are computed for these theories at the fixed points and along the flow.

Electrostatic description of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ linear quivers

We present the holographic dual for the strongly coupled, low energy dynamics of balanced ${\cal N}=4$ field theories in $(2+1)$ dimensions. The infinite family of Type IIB backgrounds with AdS$_4\times S^2\times S^2$ factors is described in terms of a Laplace problem with suitable boundary conditions. The system describes an array of D3, NS5 and D5 branes. We study various aspects of these Hanany--Witten set-ups (number of branes, linking numbers, dimension of the Higgs and Coulomb branches) and encode them in holographic calculations. A generic expression for the Free Energy/Holographic Central Charge is derived. These quantities are then calculated explicitly in various general examples. We also discuss how Mirror Symmetry is encoded in our Type IIB backgrounds. The connection with previous results in the bibliography is made.

Geometry of quantum complexity

Computational complexity is a new quantum information concept that may play an important role in holography and in understanding the physics of the black hole interior. We consider quantum computational complexity for $n$ qubits using Nielsen's geometrical approach. We investigate a choice of penalties which, compared to previous definitions, increases in a more progressive way with the number of qubits simultaneously entangled by a given operation. This choice turns out to be free from singularities. We also analyze the relation between operator and state complexities, framing the discussion with the language of Riemannian submersions. This provides a direct relation between geodesics and curvatures in the unitaries and the states spaces, which we also exploit to give a closed-form expression for the metric on the states in terms of the one for the operators. Finally, we study conjugate points for a large number of qubits in the unitary space and we provide a strong indication that maximal complexity scales exponentially with the number of qubits in a certain regime of the penalties space.

All $\mathcal{N}=(8,0)$ AdS$_3$ solutions in 10 and 11 dimensions

We classify AdS$_3$ solutions preserving $\mathcal{N}=(8,0)$ supersymmetry in ten and eleven dimensions and find the local form of each of them. These include the AdS$_3\times$S$^6$ solution of \cite{Dibitetto:2018ftj} and the embeddings of AdS$_3$ into AdS$_4\times$S$^7$, AdS$_5\times$S$^5$, AdS$_7/\mathbb{Z}_k\times$S$^4$ and its IIA reduction within AdS$_7$. More interestingly we find solutions preserving the superconformal algebras $\mathfrak{f}_4$, $\mathfrak{su}(1,1|4)$, $\mathfrak{osp}(4^*|4)$ on certain squashings of the 7-sphere. These solutions asymptote to AdS$_4\times$S$^7$ and are promising candidates for holographic duals to defects in Chern-Simons matter theories.
