On the WALA conjecture, Alberti representations and applications

We prove the WALA conjecture of G. David and S. Semmes: every AD-regular Radon measure for which all real-valued Lipschitz functions satisfy the weak approximation by affine functions condition is uniformly rectifiable. In order to prove the conjecture, we identify the correct quantitative analogue of the decomposability bundle and establish several structural results for general AD-regular measures.

Improving ideal MHD equilibrium accuracy with physics-informed neural networks

We present a novel approach to compute three-dimensional Magnetohydrodynamic equilibria by parametrizing Fourier modes with artificial neural networks and compare it to equilibria computed by conventional solvers. The full nonlinear global force residual across the volume in real space is then minimized with first order optimizers. Already,we observe competitive computational cost to arrive at the same minimum residuals computed by existing codes. With increased computational cost, lower minima of the residual are achieved by the neural networks, establishing a new lower bound for the force residual. We use minimally complex neural networks, and we expect significant improvements for solving not only single equilibria with neural networks, but also for computing neural network models valid over continuous distributions of equilibria.

ConStellaration: A dataset of QI-like stellarator plasma boundaries and optimization benchmarks

Stellarators are magnetic confinement devices under active development to deliver steady-state carbon-free fusion energy. Their design involves a high-dimensional, constrained optimization problem that requires expensive physics simulations and significant domain expertise. Recent advances in plasma physics and open-source tools have made stellarator optimization more accessible. However, broader community progress is currently bottlenecked by the lack of standardized optimization problems with strong baselines and datasets that enable data-driven approaches, particularly for quasi-isodynamic (QI) stellarator configurations, considered as a promising path to commercial fusion due to their inherent resilience to current driven disruptions. Here, we release an open dataset of diverse QI-like stellarator plasma boundary shapes, paired with their ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibria and performance metrics. We generated this dataset by sampling a variety of QI fields and optimizing corresponding stellarator plasma boundaries. We introduce three optimization benchmarks of increasing complexity: (1) a single objective geometric optimization problem, (2) a "simple-to-build" QI stellarator, and (3) a multi-objective ideal-MHD stable QI stellarator that investigates trade-offs between compactness and coil simplicity. For every benchmark, we provide reference code, evaluation scripts, and strong baselines based on classical optimization techniques. Finally, we show how learned models trained on our dataset can efficiently generate novel, feasible configurations without querying expensive physics oracles. By openly releasing the dataset along with benchmark problems and baselines, we aim to lower the entry barrier for optimization and machine learning researchers to engage in stellarator design and to accelerate cross-disciplinary progress toward bringing fusion energy to the grid.

Frobenius theorem and fine structure of tangency sets to non-involutive distributions

In this paper we provide a complete answer to the question whether Frobenius' Theorem can be generalized to surfaces below the $C^{1,1}$ threshold. We study the fine structure of the tangency set in terms of involutivity of a given distribution and we highlight a tradeoff behavior between the regularity of a tangent surface and that of the tangency set. First of all, we prove a Frobenius-type result, that is, given a $k$-dimensional surface $S$ of class $C^1$ and a non-involutive $k$-distribution $V$, if $E$ is a Borel set contained in the tangency set $\tau(S,V)$ of $S$ to $V$ and $\mathbb1_E\in W^{s,1}(S)$ with $s>1/2$ then $E$ must be $\mathscr{H}^k$-null in $S$. In addition, if $S$ is locally a graph of a $C^1$ function with gradient in $W^{\alpha,q}$ and if a Borel set $E \subset \tau(S,V)$ satisfies $ \mathbb1_E\in W^{s,1}(S)$ with \[ s \in \bigl(0,\tfrac{1}{2}\bigr]\qquad\text{and}\qquad\alpha \;>\; 1 - \Bigl(2 - \tfrac{1}{q}\Bigr) \, s, \] then $\mathscr{H}^k(E) = 0$. We show this exponents' condition to be sharp by constructing, for any $\alpha < 1 - \bigl(2 - \tfrac{1}{q}\bigr) s$, a surface $S $ in the same class as above and a set $E \subset \tau(S,V)$ with $\mathbb1_E \in W^{s,1}(S)$ and $\mathscr{H}^k(E) > 0$. Our methods combine refined fractional Sobolev estimates on rectifiable sets, a Stokes-type theorem for rough forms on finite-perimeter sets, and a generalization of the Lusin's Theorem for gradients.

Layer potentials for elliptic operators with DMO-type coefficients: big pieces $Tb$ theorem, quantitative rectifiability, and free boundary problems

For $n \geq 2$, we consider the operator $L_A = -\mathrm{div }(A(\cdot)\nabla)$, where $A$ is a uniformly elliptic $(n+1)\times(n+1)$ matrix with variable coefficients, a Radon measure $\mu$ on $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, and the associated gradient of the single layer potential operator $T_\mu$. Under a Dini-type assumption on the mean oscillation of the matrix $A$, we establish the following results: 1) A rectifiability criterion for $\mu$ in terms of $T_\mu$. Under quantitative geometric and analytic assumptions within a ball $B$ -- including an upper $n$-growth condition on $\mu$ in $B$, a thin boundary condition, a scale-invariant decay condition expressed via a weighted sum of densities over dyadic dilations of $B$, and $L^2$ boundedness of the gradient of $T_\mu$ -- we show the following: if the support of $\mu$ lies very close to an $n$-plane in $B$, and $T_\mu 1$ is nearly constant on $B$ in the $L^2$ sense, then there exists a uniformly $n$-rectifiable set $\Gamma$ such that $\mu(B \cap \Gamma) \gtrsim \mu(B)$. 2) A $Tb$ theorem for suppressed $T_\mu$, which extends a well-known theorem of Nazarov, Treil, and Volberg, and holds also for a broader class of singular integral operators. These results make it possible to prove both qualitative and quantitative one- and two-phase free boundary problems for elliptic measure, formulated in terms of (uniform) rectifiability, in bounded Wiener-regular domains.

Tangency sets of non-involutive distributions and unrectifiability in Carnot-Carath\'{e}odory spaces

In this paper, we establish refined versions of the Frobenius Theorem for non-involutive distributions and use these refinements to prove an unrectifiability result for Carnot-Carath\'{e}odory spaces. We also introduce a new class of metric spaces that extends the framework of Carnot-Carath\'{e}odory geometry and show that, within this class, Carnot-Carath\'{e}odory spaces are, in some sense, extremal. Our results provide new insights into the relationship between integrability, non-involutivity, and rectifiability in both classical and sub-Riemannian settings.

Accelerated Bayesian inference of plasma profiles with self-consistent MHD equilibria at W7-X via neural networks

High-$\langle \beta \rangle$ operations require a fast and robust inference of plasma parameters with a self-consistent MHD equilibrium. Precalculated MHD equilibria are usually employed at W7-X due to the high computational cost. To address this, we couple a physics-regularized NN model that approximates the ideal-MHD equilibrium with the Bayesian modeling framework Minerva. We show the fast and robust inference of plasma profiles (electron temperature and density) with a self-consistent MHD equilibrium approximated by the NN model. We investigate the robustness of the inference across diverse synthetic W7-X plasma scenarios. The inferred plasma parameters and their uncertainties are compatible with the parameters inferred using the VMEC, and the inference time is reduced by more than two orders of magnitude. This work suggests that MHD self-consistent inferences of plasma parameters can be performed between shots.

Generic uniqueness for the Plateau problem

Given a complete Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{M}\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ which is a Lipschitz neighbourhood retract of dimension $m+n$, of class $C^{h,\beta}$ and an oriented, closed submanifold $\Gamma \subset \mathcal M$ of dimension $m-1$, which is a boundary in integral homology, we construct a complete metric space $\mathcal{B}$ of $C^{h,\alpha}$-perturbations of $\Gamma$ inside $\mathcal{M}$, with $\alpha<\beta$, enjoying the following property. For the typical element $b\in\mathcal B$, in the sense of Baire categories, there exists a unique $m$-dimensional integral current in $\mathcal{M}$ which solves the corresponding Plateau problem and it has multiplicity one.

Carnot rectifiability and Alberti representations

A metric measure space is said to be Carnot-rectifiable if it can be covered up to a null set by countably many biLipschitz images of compact sets of a fixed Carnot group. In this paper, we give several characterisations of such notion of rectifiability both in terms of Alberti representations of the measure and in terms of differentiability of Lipschitz maps with values in Carnot groups. In order to obtain this characterisation, we develop and study the analogue of the notion of Lipschitz differentiability space by Cheeger, using Carnot groups and Pansu derivatives as models. We call such metric measure spaces Pansu differentiability spaces (PDS).

Physics-regularized neural network of the ideal-MHD solution operator in Wendelstein 7-X configurations

The computational cost of constructing 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibria is one of the limiting factors in stellarator research and design. Although data-driven approaches have been proposed to provide fast 3D MHD equilibria, the accuracy with which equilibrium properties are reconstructed is unknown. In this work, we describe an artificial neural network (NN) that quickly approximates the ideal-MHD solution operator in Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) configurations. This model fulfils equilibrium symmetries by construction. The MHD force residual regularizes the solution of the NN to satisfy the ideal-MHD equations. The model predicts the equilibrium solution with high accuracy, and it faithfully reconstructs global equilibrium quantities and proxy functions used in stellarator optimization. We also optimize W7-X magnetic configurations, where desiderable configurations can be found in terms of fast particle confinement. This work demonstrates with which accuracy NN models can approximate the 3D ideal-MHD solution operator and reconstruct equilibrium properties of interest, and it suggests how they might be used to optimize stellarator magnetic configurations.

On the converse of Pansu's Theorem

We provide a suitable generalisation of Pansu's differentiability theorem to general Radon measures on Carnot groups and we show that if Lipschitz maps between Carnot groups are Pansu-differentiable almost everywhere for some Radon measures $\mu$, then $\mu$ must be absolutely continuous with respect to the Haar measure of the group.

On the density problem in the parabolic space

In this work we extend many classical results concerning the relationship between densities, tangents and rectifiability to the parabolic spaces, namely $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ equipped with parabolic dilations. In particular we prove a Marstrand-Mattila rectifiability criterion for measures of general dimension, we provide a characterisation through densities of intrinsic rectifiable measures, and we study the structure of $1$-codimensional uniform measures. Finally, we apply some of our results to the study of a quantitative version of parabolic rectifiability: we prove that the weak constant density condition for a $1$-codimensional Ahlfors-regular measure implies the bilateral weak geometric lemma.

On sets with unit Hausdorff density in homogeneous groups

It is a longstanding conjecture that given a subset $E$ of a metric space, if $E$ has finite Hausdorff measure in dimension $\alpha\ge 0$ and $\mathscr{H}^\alpha\llcorner E$ has unit density almost everywhere, then $E$ is an $\alpha$-rectifiable set. We prove this conjecture under the assumption that the ambient metric space is a homogeneous group with a smooth-box norm.

On rectifiable measures in Carnot groups: Marstrand-Mattila rectifiability criterion

In this paper we continue the study of the notion of $\mathscr{P}$-rectifiability in Carnot groups. We say that a Radon measure is $\mathscr{P}_h$-rectifiable, for $h\in\mathbb N$, if it has positive $h$-lower density and finite $h$-upper density almost everywhere, and, at almost every point, it admits a unique tangent measure up to multiples. In this paper we prove a Marstrand--Mattila rectifiability criterion in arbitrary Carnot groups for $\mathscr{P}$-rectifiable measures with tangent planes that admit a normal complementary subgroup. Namely, in this co-normal case, even if a priori the tangent planes at a point might not be the same at different scales, a posteriori the measure has a unique tangent almost everywhere. Since every horizontal subgroup of a Carnot group has a normal complement, our criterion applies in the particular case in which the tangents are one-dimensional horizontal subgroups. Hence, as an immediate consequence of our Marstrand--Mattila rectifiability criterion and a result of Chousionis--Magnani--Tyson, we obtain the one-dimensional Preiss's theorem in the first Heisenberg group $\mathbb H^1$. More precisely, we show that a Radon measure $\phi$ on $\mathbb H^1$ with positive and finite one-density with respect to the Koranyi distance is absolutely continuous with respect to the one-dimensional Hausdorff measure $\mathcal{H}^1$, and it is supported on a one-rectifiable set in the sense of Federer, i.e., it is supported on the countable union of the images of Lipschitz maps from $A\subseteq \mathbb R$ to $\mathbb H^1$.

Characterization of rectifiability via Lusin type approximation

We prove that a Radon measure $\mu$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ can be written as $\mu=\sum_{i=0}^n\mu_i$, where each of the $\mu_i$ is an $i$-dimensional rectifiable measure if and only if for every Lipschitz function $f:\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}$ and every $\varepsilon>0$ there exists a function $g$ of class $C^1$ such that $\mu(\{x\in\mathbb{R}^n:g(x)\neq f(x)\})<\varepsilon$.

Unextendable intrinsic Lipschitz curves

In the setting of Carnot groups, we exhibit examples of intrinisc Lipschitz curves of positive $\mathcal{H}^1$-measure that intersect every connected intrinsic Lipschitz curve in a $\mathcal{H}^1$-negligible set. As a consequence such curves cannot be extended to connected intrinsic Lipschitz curves. The examples are constructed in the Engel group and in the free Carnot group of step 3 and rank 2. While the failure of the Lipschitz extension property was already known for some pairs of Carnot groups, ours is the first example of the analogous phenomenon for intrinsic Lipschitz graphs. This is in sharp contrast with the Euclidean case.
