Probing Majorana zero modes by measuring transport through an interacting magnetic impurity

Motivated by recent experiments we consider transport across an interacting magnetic impurity coupled to the Majorana zero mode (MZM) observed at the boundary of a topological superconductor (SC). In the presence of a finite tunneling amplitude we observe hybridization of the MZM with the quantum dot, which is manifested by a half-integer zero-bias conductance $G_0=e^2/2h$ measured on the metallic contacts. The low-energy feature in the conductance drops abruptly by crossing the transition line from the topological to the non-topological superconducting regime. Differently from the in-gap Yu-Shiba-Rosinov-like bound states, which are strongly affected by the on-site impurity Coulomb repulsion, we show that the MZM signature in the conductance is robust and persists even at large values of the interaction. Interestingly, the topological regime is characterized by a vanishing Fano factor, $F=0$, induced by the MZM. Combined measurements of the conductance and the shot noise in the experimental set-up presented in the manuscript allow to detect the topological properties of the superconducting wire and to distinguish the low-energy contribution of a MZM from other possible sources of zero-bias anomaly. Despite being interacting the model is exactly solvable, which allows to have an exact characterization of the charge transport properties of the junction.

Violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law in the Topological Kondo model

We study the thermal transport through a Majorana island connected to multiple external quantum wires. In the presence of a large charging energy, we find that the Wiedemann-Franz law is nontrivially violated at low temperature, contrarily to what happens for the overscreened Kondo effect and for nontopological junctions. For three wires, we find that the Lorenz ratio is rescaled by a universal factor 2/3 and we show that this behavior is due to the presence of localized Majorana modes on the island.

Quasi-one-dimensional $^4$He in nanopores

Low temperature structural and superfluid properties of $^4$He confined in cylindrical nanopores are theoretically investigated by means of first principle Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations. We vary the density of $^4$He inside the pore, as well as the pore diameter and the potential describing the interaction of each $^4$He atom with the pore surface. Accordingly, the $^4$He fluid inside the pore forms either a single channel along the axis, or a series of concentric cylindrical shells, with varying degrees of shell overlap. In the limit of pore length greatly exceeding its radius, the $^4$He fluid always displays markedly one-dimensional behavior, with no "dimensional crossover" above some specific pore radius and/or as multiple concentric shells form, in contrast to what recently claimed by other authors [Phys. Rev. B 101, 104505 (2020)]. Indeed, the predicted robustness of one-dimensional physics suggests that this system may offer a broadly viable pathway to the experimental observation of exotic behavior of, e.g., junctions of interacting Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids, in an appropriately designed network of nanopores.

Dissipative cooling induced by pulse perturbations

We investigate the dynamics brought on by an impulse perturbation in two infinite-range quantum Ising models coupled to each other and to a dissipative bath. We show that, if dissipation is faster the higher the excitation energy, the pulse perturbation cools down the low-energy sector of the system, at the expense of the high-energy one, eventually stabilising a transient symmetry-broken state at temperatures higher than the equilibrium critical one. Such non-thermal quasi-steady state may survive for quite a long time after the pulse, if the latter is properly tailored.

Lindblad equation approach to the optimal working point in nonequilibrium stationary states of an interacting electronic one-dimensional system: Application to the spinless Hubbard chain in the clean and in the weakly disordered limit

Using the Lindblad equation approach, we derive the range of the parameters of an interacting one-dimensional electronic chain connected to two reservoirs in the large bias limit in which an optimal working point (corresponding to a change in the monotonicity of the stationary current as a function of the applied bias) emerges in the nonequilibrium stationary state. In the specific case of the one-dimensional spinless fermionic Hubbard chain, we prove that an optimal working point emerges in the dependence of the stationary current on the coupling between the chain and the reservoirs, both in the interacting and in the noninteracting case. We show that the optimal working point is robust against localized defects of the chain, as well as against a limited amount of quenched disorder. Eventually, we discuss the importance of our results for optimizing the performance of a quantum circuit by tuning its components as close as possible to their optimal working point.

Analytical and cellular automaton approach to a generalized SEIR model for infection spread in an open crowded space

We formulate a generalized susceptible exposed infectious recovered (SEIR) model on a graph, describing the population dynamics of an open crowded place with an arbitrary topology. As a sample calculation, we discuss three simple cases, both analytically, and numerically, by means of a cellular automata simulation of the individual dynamics in the system. As a result, we provide the infection ratio in the system as a function of controllable parameters, which allows for quantifying how acting on the human behavior may effectively lower the disease spread throughout the system.

Tunable Kondo screening length at a Y-junction of three inhomogenous spin chains

We derive the topological Kondo Hamiltonian describing a Y junction of three XX-spin chains connected to outer quantum Ising chains with different tilting angles for the Ising axis. We show that the tilting angles in the spin models play the role of the phases of the superconducting order parameters at the interfaces between bulk superconductors and one-dimensional conducting normal electronic wires. As a result, different tilting angles induce nonzero equilibrium spin (super)currents through the junction. Employing the renormalization group approach to the topological Kondo model, we derive the scaling formulas for the equilibrium spin currents. We argue that, by monitoring the crossover in the currents induced by the Kondo effect, it is possible to estimate the Kondo screening length. In particular, we prove how it is possible to tune the Kondo length by acting on the applied phases only; this enables us to map out the scaling properties by just tuning the tilting angles and the Kondo length accordingly.

Tunable spin/charge Kondo effect at a double superconducting island connected to two spinless quantum wires

We propose that a pertinently engineered double superconducting island connected to two spinless one-dimensional conducting leads can work as a tunable (iso)spin Kondo and charge Kondo system, with the lead index regarded as an effective isospin degree of freedom. We evidence how, by tuning a single gate voltage applied to the island, it is possible to make the system switch from the (iso)spin Kondo to the charge-Kondo phase, passing across an intermediate phase, in which the Kondo impurity is effectively irrelevant for the low-temperature behavior of the system. Eventually, we evidence how to probe the various phases by measuring the ac conductance tensor of our system, by emphasizing the features that should allow to identify the onset of the so far quite elusive "charge-2" charge-Kondo effect.

Lindblad dissipative dynamics in presence of phase coexistence

We investigate the dissipative dynamics yielded by the Lindblad equation within the coexistence region around a first order phase transition. In particular, we consider an exactly-solvable fullyconnected quantum Ising model with n-spin exchange (n > 2) - the prototype of quantum first order phase transitions - and several variants of the Lindblad equations. We show that physically sound results, including exotic non-equilibrium phenomena like the Mpemba effect, can be obtained only when the Lindblad equation involves jump operators defined for each of the coexisting phases, whether stable or metastable.

Persistent current and zero-energy Majorana modes in a p-wave disordered superconducting ring

We discuss the emergence of zero-energy Majorana modes in a disordered finite-length p-wave one-dimensional superconducting ring, pierced by a magnetic flux $Φ$ tuned at an appropriate value $Φ=Φ_*$. In the absence of fermion parity conservation, we evidence the emergence of the Majorana modes by looking at the discontinuities in the persistent current $I[Φ]$ at $Φ=Φ_*$. By monitoring the discontinuities in $I[Φ]$, we map out the region in parameter space characterized by the emergence of Majorana modes in the disordered ring.

Cooling quasiparticles in A$_3$C$_{60}$ fullerides by excitonic mid-infrared absorption

Long after its discovery superconductivity in alkali fullerides A$_3$C$_{60}$ still challenges conventional wisdom. The freshest inroad in such ever-surprising physics is the behaviour under intense infrared (IR) excitation. Signatures attributable to a transient superconducting state extending up to temperatures ten times higher than the equilibrium $T_c\sim$ 20 K have been discovered in K$_3$C$_{60}$ after ultra-short pulsed IR irradiation -- an effect which still appears as remarkable as mysterious. Motivated by the observation that the phenomenon is observed in a broad pumping frequency range that coincides with the mid-infrared electronic absorption peak still of unclear origin, rather than to TO phonons as has been proposed, we advance here a radically new mechanism. First, we argue that this broad absorption peak represents a "super-exciton" involving the promotion of one electron from the $t_{1u}$ half-filled state to a higher-energy empty $t_{1g}$ state, dramatically lowered in energy by the large dipole-dipole interaction acting in conjunction with Jahn Teller effect within the enormously degenerate manifold of $\big(t_{1u}\big)^2\big(t_{1g}\big)^1$ states. Both long-lived and entropy-rich because they are triplets, the IR-induced excitons act as a sort of cooling mechanism that permits transient superconductive signals to persist up to much larger temperatures.

Transfer matrix approach to the persistent current in hybrid normal-superconducting rings

Using the properties of the transfer matrix of one-dimensional quantum mechanical systems, we derive a technique to exactly compute the persistent current across a hybrid normal-superconducting-mesoscopic ring pierced by a magnetic flux Phi as a single integral of a known function of the system's parameters. Our approach provides exact results at zero temperature, which can be readily extended to finite temperatures T much below the superconducting gap. We apply our technique to derive the persistent current through p-wave and s-wave superconducting-normal hybrid rings, recovering at once a number of effects such as the crossover in the current periodicity on increasing the size of the ring and the signature of the topological phase transition in the p-wave case. In the limit of a large ring size, resorting to a systematic expansion in inverse powers of the ring length, we derive exact analytic closed-form formulas, applicable to a number of cases of physical interest.

Dual fermionic variables and renormalization group approach to junctions of strongly interacting quantum wires

Making a combined use of bosonization and fermionization techniques, we build nonlocal transformations between dual fermion operators, describing junctions of strongly interacting spinful one-dimensional quantum wires. Our approach allows for trading strongly interacting (in the original coordinates) fermionic Hamiltonians for weakly interacting (in the dual coordinates) ones. It enables us to generalize to the strongly interacting regime the fermionic renormalization group approach to weakly interacting junctions. As a result, on one hand, we are able to pertinently complement the information about the phase diagram of the junction obtained within bosonization approach; on the other hand, we map out the full crossover of the conductance tensors between any two fixed points in the phase diagram connected by a renormalization group trajectory.

Tunneling spectroscopy of Majorana-Kondo devices

We study the local density of states (LDOS) in systems of Luttinger-liquid nanowires connected to a common mesoscopic superconducting island, in which Majorana bound states give rise to different types of topological Kondo effects. We show that electron interactions enhance the low-energy LDOS in the leads close to the island, with unusual exponents due to Kondo physics that can be probed in tunneling experiments.
