Dynamic Critical Behavior of an Extended Reptation Dynamics for Self-Avoiding Walks

We consider lattice self-avoiding walks and discuss the dynamic critical behavior of two dynamics that use local and bilocal moves and generalize the usual reptation dynamics. We determine the integrated and exponential autocorrelation times for several observables, perform a dynamic finite-size scaling study of the autocorrelation functions, and compute the associated dynamic critical exponents $z$. For the variables that describe the size of the walks, in the absence of interactions we find $z \approx 2.2$ in two dimensions and $z\approx 2.1$ in three dimensions. At the $θ$-point in two dimensions we have $z\approx 2.3$.

Spin models on Platonic solids and asymptotic freedom

We consider a two-dimensional sigma-model with discrete icosahedral/dodecahedral symmetry. We present high-precision finite-size numerical results that show that the continuum limit of this model is different from the continuum limit of the rotationally invariant O(3) sigma-model.

Irrelevant operators in the two-dimensional Ising model

By using conformal-field theory, we classify the possible irrelevant operators for the Ising model on the square and triangular lattices. We analyze the existing results for the free energy and its derivatives and for the correlation length, showing that they are in agreement with the conformal-field theory predictions. Moreover, these results imply that the nonlinear scaling field of the energy-momentum tensor vanishes at the critical point. Several other peculiar cancellations are explained in terms of a number of general conjectures. We show that all existing results on the square and triangular lattice are consistent with the assumption that only nonzero spin operators are present.

Chiral exponents in frustrated spin models with noncollinear ordering

We compute the chiral critical exponents for the chiral transition in frustrated two- and three-component spin systems with noncollinear order, such as stacked triangular antiferromagnets (STA). For this purpose, we calculate and analyze the six-loop field-theoretical expansion of the renormalization-group function associated with the chiral operator. The results are in satisfactory agreement with those obtained in the recent experiment on the XY STA CsMnBr_3 reported by V. P. Plakhty et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 3942 (2000), providing further support for the continuous nature of the chiral transition.

Two-loop critical mass for Wilson fermions

We have redone a recent two-loop computation of the critical mass for Wilson fermions in lattice QCD by evaluating Feynman integrals with the coordinate-space method. We present the results for different types of infrared regularization. We confirm both the previous numerical estimates and the power of the coordinate-space method whenever high accuracy is needed.

Finite-Size Critical Behavior of the Driven Lattice Gas

We present a detailed Monte Carlo study of the high-temperature phase of the two-dimensional driven lattice gas at infinite driving field. We define a finite-volume correlation length, study its finite-size-scaling behavior and extrapolate it to the infinite-volume limit by using an iterative extrapolation method. The same method is applied to the susceptibility. We determine the transverse exponents $γ$ and $ν$. They turn out to be in perfect agreement with the theoretical predictions. We also compute the transverse Binder parameter, which apparently vanishes at the critical point, and the distribution of the magnetization. These results confirm the Gaussian nature of the transverse excitations.

Asymptotically free models and discrete non-Abelian groups

We study the two-dimensional renormalization-group flow induced by perturbations that reduce the global symmetry of the O(3) sigma-model to the discrete symmetries of Platonic solids. We estimate the value of the correlation length at which differences in the behaviour of the various models should be expected. For the icosahedron model, we find xi > 200. We provide an explanation for the recent numerical results of Patrascioiu and Seiler and of Hasenfratz and Niedermayer.

Large-n Critical Behavior of O(n)xO(m) Spin Models

We consider the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonian with O(n)x O(m) symmetry and compute the critical exponents at all fixed points to O(n^{-2}) and to O(ε^3) in a ε=4-d expansion. We also consider the corresponding non-linear sigma model and determine the fixed points and the critical exponents to O(\tildeε^2) in the \tildeε=d-2 expansion. Using these results, we draw quite general conclusions on the fixed-point structure of models with O(n)xO(m) symmetry for n large and all 2 < d < 4.

Finite-Size Correlation Length and Violations of Finite-Size Scaling

We address the problem of the definition of the finite-volume correlation length. First, we study the large-N limit of the N-vector model, and we show the existence of several constraints on the definition if regularity of the finite-size scaling functions and correct anomalous behaviour above the upper critical dimension are required. Then, we study in detail a model in which the zero mode in prohibited. Such a model is a generalization of the fixed-magnetization Ising model which is equivalent to the lattice gas. Also in this case, we find that the finite-volume correlation length must satisfy appropriate constraints in order to obtain regular finite-size scaling functions, and, above the upper critical dimension, an anomalous scaling behaviour. The large-N results are confirmed by a one-loop calculation in the lattice $ϕ^4$ theory.

Critical behavior of the three-dimensional XY universality class

We improve the theoretical estimates of the critical exponents for the three-dimensional XY universality class. We find alpha=-0.0146(8), gamma=1.3177(5), nu=0.67155(27), eta=0.0380(4), beta=0.3485(2), and delta=4.780(2). We observe a discrepancy with the most recent experimental estimate of alpha; this discrepancy calls for further theoretical and experimental investigations. Our results are obtained by combining Monte Carlo simulations based on finite-size scaling methods, and high-temperature expansions. Two improved models (with suppressed leading scaling corrections) are selected by Monte Carlo computation. The critical exponents are computed from high-temperature expansions specialized to these improved models. By the same technique we determine the coefficients of the small-magnetization expansion of the equation of state. This expansion is extended analytically by means of approximate parametric representations, obtaining the equation of state in the whole critical region. We also determine the specific-heat amplitude ratio.

High-precision estimate of g4 in the 2D Ising model

We compute the renormalized four-point coupling in the 2d Ising model using transfer-matrix techniques. We greatly reduce the systematic uncertainties which usually affect this type of calculations by using the exact knowledge of several terms in the scaling function of the free energy. Our final result is g4=14.69735(3).

Operator Product Expansion on the Lattice: a Numerical Test in the Two-Dimensional Non-Linear Sigma-Model

We consider the short-distance behaviour of the product of the Noether O(N) currents in the lattice nonlinear sigma-model. We compare the numerical results with the predictions of the operator product expansion, using one-loop perturbative renormalization-group improved Wilson coefficients. We find that, even on quite small lattices (m a \approx 1/6), the perturbative operator product expansion describes that data with an error of 5-10% in a large window 2a \ltapprox x \ltapprox m^{-1}. We present a detailed discussion of the possible systematic errors.

The critical behavior of frustrated spin models with noncollinear order

We study the critical behavior of frustrated spin models with noncollinear order, including stacked triangular antiferromagnets and helimagnets. For this purpose we compute the field-theoretic expansions at fixed dimension to six loops and determine their large-order behavior. For the physically relevant cases of two and three components, we show the existence of a new stable fixed point that corresponds to the conjectured chiral universality class. This contradicts previous three-loop field-theoretical results but is in agreement with experiments.

End-to-end distribution function for dilute polymers

We study the end-to-end distribution function for dilute polymers. We present a computation to order $O(ε^2)$, $ε= 4 - d$, and discuss in detail its asymptotic behaviour for small and large distances. The theoretical predictions are compared with Monte Carlo results, finding good agreement.

The critical equation of state of three-dimensional XY systems

We address the problem of determining the critical equation of state of three-dimensional XY systems. For this purpose we first consider the small-field expansion of the effective potential (Helmholtz free energy) in the high-temperature phase. We compute the first few nontrivial zero-momentum n-point renormalized couplings, which parametrize such expansion, by analyzing the high-temperature expansion of an improved lattice Hamiltonian with suppressed leading scaling corrections. These results are then used to construct parametric representations of the critical equation of state which are valid in the whole critical regime, satisfy the correct analytic properties (Griffith's analyticity), and take into account the Goldstone singularities at the coexistence curve. A systematic approximation scheme is introduced, which is limited essentially by the number of known terms in the small-field expansion of the effective potential. From our approximate representations of the equation of state, we derive estimates of universal ratios of amplitudes. For the specific-heat amplitude ratio we obtain A^+/A^-=1.055(3), to be compared with the best experimental estimate A^+/A^-=1.054(1).

Bilocal Dynamics for Self-Avoiding Walks

We introduce several bilocal algorithms for lattice self-avoiding walks that provide reasonable models for the physical kinetics of polymers in the absence of hydrodynamic effects. We discuss their ergodicity in different confined geometries, for instance in strips and in slabs. A short discussion of the dynamical properties in the absence of interactions is given.

Composite operators from the operator product expansion: what can go wrong?

The operator product expansion is used to compute the matrix elements of composite renormalized operators on the lattice. We study the product of two fundamental fields in the two-dimensional sigma-model and discuss the possible sources of systematic errors. The key problem turns out to be the violation of asymptotic scaling.
