Improved high-temperature expansion and critical equation of state of three-dimensional Ising-like systems

High-temperature series are computed for a generalized $3d$ Ising model with arbitrary potential. Two specific ``improved'' potentials (suppressing leading scaling corrections) are selected by Monte Carlo computation. Critical exponents are extracted from high-temperature series specialized to improved potentials, achieving high accuracy; our best estimates are: $γ=1.2371(4)$, $ν=0.63002(23)$, $α=0.1099(7)$, $η=0.0364(4)$, $β=0.32648(18)$. By the same technique, the coefficients of the small-field expansion for the effective potential (Helmholtz free energy) are computed. These results are applied to the construction of parametric representations of the critical equation of state. A systematic approximation scheme, based on a global stationarity condition, is introduced (the lowest-order approximation reproduces the linear parametric model). This scheme is used for an accurate determination of universal ratios of amplitudes. A comparison with other theoretical and experimental determinations of universal quantities is presented.

High-precision determination of the critical exponents for the lambda-transition of 4He by improved high-temperature expansion

We determine the critical exponents for the XY universality class in three dimensions, which is expected to describe the $λ$-transition in ${}^4$He. They are obtained from the analysis of high-temperature series computed for a two-component $λϕ^4$ model. The parameter $λ$ is fixed such that the leading corrections to scaling vanish. We obtain $ν= 0.67166(55)$, $γ= 1.3179(11)$, $α=-0.0150(17)$. These estimates improve previous theoretical determinations and agree with the more precise experimental results for liquid Helium.

Determination of the exponent gamma for SAWs on the two-dimensional Manhattan lattice

We present a high-statistics Monte Carlo determination of the exponent gamma for self-avoiding walks on a Manhattan lattice in two dimensions. A conservative estimate is $γ\gtapprox 1.3425(3)$, in agreement with the universal value 43/32 on regular lattices, but in conflict with predictions from conformal field theory and with a recent estimate from exact enumerations. We find strong corrections to scaling that seem to indicate the presence of a non-analytic exponent Delta < 1. If we assume Delta = 11/16 we find gamma = 1.3436(3), where the error is purely statistical.

Testing the efficiency of different improvement programs

We study the finite-size behaviour of a tree-level on-shell improved action for the N-vector model. We present numerical results for N=3 and analytic results in the large-N limit for the mass gap. We also report a perturbative computation at one loop of the mass gap for states of spatial momentum p. We present a detailed comparison of the behaviour of this action with that of other formulations, including the perfect action, and a critical discussion of the different approaches to the problem of action improvement.

Pseudo-Character Expansions for U(N)-Invariant Spin Models on CP^{N-1}

We define a set of orthogonal functions on the complex projective space CP^{N-1}, and compute their Clebsch-Gordan coefficients as well as a large class of 6-j symbols. We also provide all the needed formulae for the generation of high-temperature expansions for U(N)-invariant spin models defined on CP^{N-1}.

Operator product expansion and non-perturbative renormalization

It has been recently proposed to use the operator product expansion to evaluate the expectation values of renormalized operators without the need of a direct computation of the relevant renormalization constants. We test the viability of this idea in the two-dimensional non-linear sigma-model discussing the non-perturbative renormalization of the energy-momentum tensor.

Crossover scaling from classical to non-classical critical behaviour

Interacting physical systems in the neighborhood of criticality (and massive continuum field theories) can often be characterized by just two physical scales: a (macroscopic) correlation length and a (microscopic) interaction range, related to the coupling and measured by the Ginzburg number $G$. A critical crossover limit can be defined when both scales become large while their ratio stays finite. The corresponding scaling functions are universal, and they are related to the standard field-theory renormalization-group functions. The critical crossover describes the unique flow from the Gaussian to the nonclassical fixed point.

Corrections to Finite-Size Scaling in the Lattice N-Vector Model for Infinite N

We compute the corrections to finite-size scaling for the N-vector model on the square lattice in the large-N limit. We find that corrections behave as log L/L^2. For tree-level improved hamiltonians corrections behave as 1/L^2. In general l-loop improvement is expected to reduce this behaviour to 1/(L^2 \log^l L). We show that the finite-size-scaling and the perturbative limit do not commute in the calculation of the corrections to finite-size scaling. We present also a detailed study of the corrections for the RP^N-model.

Monte Carlo results for three-dimensional self-avoiding walks

We discuss possible sources of systematic errors in the computation of critical exponents by renormalization-group methods, extrapolations from exact enumerations and Monte Carlo simulations. A careful Monte Carlo determination of the susceptibility exponent gamma for three-dimensional self-avoiding walks has been used to test the claimed accuracy of the various methods.

Improved actions for the two-dimensional sigma-model

For the O(N) sigma-model we studied the improvement program for actions with two- and four-spin interactions. An interesting example is an action which is reflection-positive, on-shell improved, and has all the coupling defined on an elementary plaquette. We show the large N solution and preliminary Monte Carlo results for N=3.

Critical limit and anisotropy in the two-point correlation function of three-dimensional O(N) models

In three-dimensional O(N) models, we investigate the low-momentum behavior of the two-point Green's function G(x) in the critical region of the symmetric phase. We consider physical systems whose criticality is characterized by a a rotationally-invariant fixed point. In non rotationally-invariant physical systems with O(N)-invariant interactions, the vanishing of anisotropy in approaching the rotationally-invariant fixed point is described by a critical exponent rho, which is universal and is related to the leading irrelevant operator breaking rotational invariance. At N=infinity one finds rho=2. 1/N expansion and strong-coupling calculations show that, for all values of N>=0, rho~2. Non-Gaussian corrections to the universal low-momentum behavior of G(x) are evaluated, and found to be very small.

Comparing Different Improvement Programs for the N-Vector Model

We discuss the connection between various types of improved actions in the context of the two-dimensional sigma-model. We also discuss spectrum-improved actions showing that these actions do not have any improved behaviour. An O(a^2) on-shell improved action with all couplings defined on a plaquette and satisfying reflection positivity is also explicitly constructed.

Multi-Grid Monte Carlo via $XY$ Embedding. II. Two-Dimensional $SU(3)$ Principal Chiral Model

We carry out a high-precision simulation of the two-dimensional $SU(3)$ principal chiral model at correlation lengths $ξ$ up to $\sim 4 \times 10^5$, using a multi-grid Monte Carlo (MGMC) algorithm and approximately one year of Cray C-90 CPU time. We extrapolate the finite-volume Monte Carlo data to infinite volume using finite-size-scaling theory, and we discuss carefully the systematic and statistical errors in this extrapolation. We then compare the extrapolated data to the renormalization-group predictions. The deviation from asymptotic scaling, which is $\approx 12%$ at $ξ\sim 25$, decreases to $\approx 2%$ at $ξ\sim 4 \times 10^5$. We also analyze the dynamic critical behavior of the MGMC algorithm using lattices up to $256 \times 256$, finding the dynamic critical exponent $z_{int,{\cal M}^2} \approx 0.45 \pm 0.02$ (subjective 68% confidence interval). Thus, for this asymptotically free model, critical slowing-down is greatly reduced compared to local algorithms, but not completely eliminated.

Critical behavior of the correlation function of three-dimensional O(N) models in the symmetric phase

We present new strong-coupling series for O(N) spin models in three dimensions, on the cubic and diamond lattices. We analyze these series to investigate the two-point Green's function G(x) in the critical region of the symmetric phase. This analysis shows that the low-momentum behavior of G(x) is essentially Gaussian for all N from zero to infinity. This result is also supported by a large-N analysis.
