Heat content and spectrum for subordinated sub-Laplacians

We study heat content and spectral properties of subordinated sub-Laplacians on arbitrary Carnot groups. We consider restrictions of such operators to bounded open sets with zero Dirichlet boundary condition and study their spectral properties. In particular, for a large class of subordinators we give explicit eigenvalue estimates in terms of the subordinator and the eigenvalues of the sub-Laplacian. We also provide large-time asymptotics of the heat content for the subordinated sub-Laplacian in terms of its spectral gap. For fractional sub-Laplacians we prove short-time asymptotics for the corresponding heat content and relative heat content. Our approach combines semigroup methods, probabilistic techniques, geometric measure theory, and heat kernel estimates.

Harmonic morphisms of sub-Riemannian Lie groups

We prove that harmonic morphisms between sub-Riemannian Lie groups are smooth, are symmetries of the sub-Riemannian Laplacian and are conformal submersions that satisfy a particular PDE. Moreover, we give some partial results for harmonic morphisms beyond Lie groups. We show the existence of harmonic coordinates for harmonically homogeneous spaces, and that smooth harmonic morphisms are symmetries of the Laplacian in all sub-Riemannian manifolds. Finally, we compute the first variation of the horizontal energy along a harmonic morphism of sub-Riemannian Lie groups: it is given by a linear form on the Lie algebra of the target, the modular mismatch, which vanishes for Riemannian and Carnot targets, but surprisingly not in general. Therefore, unlike in the Riemannian case, harmonic morphisms of sub-Riemannian Lie groups need not be harmonic maps.

Sharp refined-direction Kakeya estimates in finite Heisenberg groups

Let $n\geq 2$ and let $q$ be an odd prime power. The first aim of this paper is to prove that, for every $E\subset \mathbb{H}_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ and every $\lambda>0$, the following sharp rich-direction estimate holds \[ \left| \left\{ \vartheta\in D_n: M^{\mathrm{rd}}_{\mathbb{H}_n}\mathbf{1}_E(\vartheta)\geq\lambda \right\} \right| \lesssim_n q^{2n-1}|E|\lambda^{-2n}. \] The second aim is to determine, for every $1\leq u,v\leq\infty$, the sharp exponent of $q$ in the corresponding $\ell^u\to\ell^v$ estimate. More precisely, we prove that \[ A_n^{\mathrm{rd}}(u,v) = \max\left\{ \frac{2n-1}{v},\ 1-\frac1u,\ \frac{2n}{v}-\frac1u,\ 1+\frac{2n}{v}-\frac{2n+1}{u} \right\}. \] The proof combines the polynomial method with multiplicities and a probabilistic covering argument based on the action of the affine symplectic group.

A 'global' Perspective on the Differential Geometry of Wasserstein Spaces

We develop a global differential calculus on the $L^2$-Wasserstein space over a closed Riemannian manifold, based on derivations of cylinder functions rather than on the standard pointwise approach. Within this framework we define some fundamental geometric tools. In particular, we show that the Levi-Civita connection on the base manifold lifts to the unique torsion-free connection compatible with the 'extended' Otto metric. The corresponding Riemann tensor is exactly the lift of the base Riemann tensor, which shows that - in this framework - the correction terms of the classical gradient formalism are not intrinsic curvature terms, but arise from the projection onto the measure-dependent gradient distribution. This allows us to revisit with a global and purely differential approach the smooth computations by J. Lott, Comm. Math. Phys., 277(2):423-437, 2007, reaching partially different conclusions.

A non-convergence phenomenon for the CR Yamabe flow

We construct a contact form on a three dimensional CR manifold such that the CR Yamabe flow fails to converge. More precisely, on small Rossi deformations of the standard CR three-sphere, we exhibit an example whose corresponding CR Yamabe flow develops a one-bubble concentration regime. The construction is based on the negativity of the pseudohermitian mass on the Rossi spheres. This shows that mass positivity is not merely a technical assumption in the known convergence results for the CR Yamabe flow, but is genuinely connected to the large-time dynamics of the flow.

Constant mean curvature surfaces in the sub-Lorentzian Heisenberg group

We study constant horizontal mean curvature surfaces in the sub-Lorentzian Heisenberg group. We derive the first-variation formula for horizontal area under volume-preserving radial variations and show that smooth isoperimetric candidates have constant horizontal mean curvature away from the characteristic set. We then give a complete classification of smooth boost-symmetric constant mean curvature surfaces: their characteristic sets, causal behaviour, and ambient sub-Lorentzian isometry classes. From this classification, we single out a family of smooth, acausal, boost-symmetric surfaces with nonzero constant mean curvature. Written as a two-sheeted graph over the exterior of a future hyperbola, this family is a natural sub-Lorentzian analogue of the Pansu bubbles and leads us to conjecture that it gives the isoperimetric maximisers in the sub-Lorentzian Heisenberg group.

Unexpected phenomena for mean curvature functionals in the Heisenberg group

The Euclidean paradigm that spheres optimize mean curvature variational problems breaks down in the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group: neither the Pansu sphere nor the Kor\'anyi sphere is optimal for the variational problems associated with the Minkowski and Heintze-Karcher inequalities. Motivated by this phenomenon, we develop a variational theory for geometric problems driven by the horizontal mean curvature, focusing on the total mean curvature functional and the related Minkowski inequality, introducing suitable notions of non-characteristic stationarity and stability. We identify a new one-parameter family of rotationally invariant critical surfaces, which we call Pansu-Minkowski spheres. Among them, we show that a distinguished member, the optimal Pansu-Minkowski sphere, emerges as the unique critical point of the Minkowski quotient, and uniquely minimizes it among Pansu-Minkowski spheres. We prove non-characteristic stability and local minimality of Pansu-Minkowski spheres under rotationally invariant perturbations, while showing their instability under unrestricted perturbations.

A discrete-time overdetermined problem for the heat equation

In this paper, we consider a parabolic counterpart of Serrin's overdetermined problem, in which the overdetermined condition (constant flux condition) is imposed only on a discrete infinite set of time values. We show that, under suitable regularity assumptions on the domain, such a discrete-time overdetermined problem admits a solution if and only if the domain is a ball. Remarkably, depending on the temporal scale, the same overdetermined condition captures either geometric or spectral information, yet both mechanisms lead to the same rigidity conclusion. We study both the case in which the constant flux condition is imposed on the boundary and the case in which the constant flux condition is imposed on an interior surface. We remark that the methods employed in our analysis do not depend on the location of the overdetermined surface but only on whether the sequence of time instants accumulates away from zero. Finally, we will show how this problem generalizes to complete Riemannian manifolds.

Dimension reduction of fractional Sobolev seminorms on thin domains

We study the asymptotic behaviour of Gagliardo seminorms in $H^s$ defined on thin films $\Omega_\e=\omega\times(0,\e)$. The first relevant order is $\e^{1-2s}$, at which the corresponding limit captures the vertical fractional oscillations through one-dimensional sections. The second relevant order produces dimension-reduction regimes that undergo a qualitative transition at the critical exponent $s=\tfrac12$. For $s<\tfrac12$, the dominant contribution is driven by interactions at finite planar distance, and the dimension-reduction scale is $\e^2$. In this regime, the limit is a lower-dimensional \emph{fractional} energy with an effective gain of $\tfrac12$ in the differentiability index. At the critical exponent $s=1/2$, the dimension-reduction scale is $\e^{2}|\log\e|$, and the limit is {\em local}, with dominant interactions at scales between $\e$ and $1$, producing a Dirichlet-type limit on $\omega$. For $s>\tfrac12$, the dominant contribution is instead driven by interactions at distances of order $\varepsilon$, the dimension-reduction scale is $\e^{3-2s}$, and the second-order $\Gamma$-limit is still local. We also study the case $s=s_\e\to 1^-$, showing a Bourgain--Brezis--Mironescu-type result.

Compactness in Dimension Five and Equivariant Noncompactness for the CR Yamabe Problem

We study compactness and noncompactness phenomena for the CR Yamabe equation on compact strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds. First, in dimension five we establish uniform \emph{a priori} estimates for families of positive solutions of subcritical equations for the conformal CR sub-Laplacian \[ L_{J}u = u^{p}, \] with $p$ bounded away from the critical exponent, assuming positivity of the CR Yamabe constant and positivity of the $p$-mass at every point. As a consequence, the corresponding set of solutions is precompact in H\"older topologies. Secondly, we consider the equivariant CR Yamabe problem for a compact subgroup $G$ of pseudo-Hermitian transformations. We construct a $G$-invariant CR structure on $S^{3}$, not equivalent to the standard one, for which the associated CR Yamabe equation admits a sequence of $G$-invariant solutions whose maxima diverge, thereby proving noncompactness in the equivariant setting. The arguments combine a Pohozaev-type identity in pseudohermitian normal coordinates with a blow-up analysis and Liouville-type classification results on the Heisenberg group.

Horizontal curvatures of surfaces in 3D contact sub-Riemannian Lie groups

In this paper we study horizontal curvatures for surfaces embedded in three-dimensional contact sub-Riemannian Lie groups. Using a Riemannian approximation scheme, we derive explicit formulas for horizontal Gauss curvature, horizontal mean curvature, and symplectic distortion for surfaces embedded in three dimensional Lie groups with a sub-Riemannian structure obtained by a contact form. We focus on two primary examples: the Heisenberg group and the affine-additive group. We classify surfaces of revolution within these groups that exhibit constant horizontal curvatures, often expressing their profiles through elementary or elliptic integrals.

Horizontal Kakeya maximal operators in finite Heisenberg groups: Exact exponents and applications

Let $q$ be an odd prime power. We study Kakeya maximal operators associated with horizontal lines in the finite Heisenberg groups $\mathbb H_n(\mathbb F_q)$. Our principal object is the refined-direction maximal operator, whose parameter records the projective horizontal direction together with the central homogeneous coordinate determined by horizontality. In rank one, we prove \[ \|M_{\mathbb H_1}^{\mathrm{rd}}F\|_{\ell^2(\mathcal D_1)} \lesssim q^{\frac{1}{2}} \|F\|_{\ell^2(\mathbb H_1(\mathbb F_q))}, \] where the exponent $\frac{1}{2}$ is sharp. Combining this estimate with endpoint bounds and interpolation, we determine the exact mixed-norm growth exponent: \[ A^{\mathrm{rd}}_1(u,v) = \max\left\{ \frac1v,\, 1-\frac1u,\, \frac2v-\frac1u,\, 1+\frac2v-\frac3u \right\}, \qquad 1\le u,v\le\infty. \] As a consequence, if $E\subset\mathbb H_1(\mathbb F_q)$ meets, in at least $m$ points, a horizontal line in each refined direction from $\Omega\subset D_1$, then \[ |E|\gtrsim \frac{m^2|\Omega|}{q}. \] As a benchmark, we also analyze the coarser operator parameterized only by projective horizontal directions and determine its exact $\ell^u\to\ell^v$ growth exponent in every rank. In rank one, this benchmark is established by a self-contained $TT^*$ argument rather than polynomial vanishing, and the same planar estimate reappears as the zero-central-frequency component of the refined-direction proof. The nonzero central frequencies are controlled by Plancherel, character orthogonality, and a bounded-fiber property of an explicit quadratic map. Thus, the sharp refined-direction estimate is obtained by purely Fourier-analytic methods.

On low-dimensional uniform rectifiability in Heisenberg groups

Refining an earlier result due to Hahlomaa, we provide a new Carleson-type condition for $k$-regular sets in the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$ to have big pieces of Lipschitz images of subsets of $\mathbb{R}^k$ for $1\leq k\leq n$. Our approach passes via the corona decompositions by normed spaces, recently introduced by Bate, Hyde, and Schul. Along the way, we prove implications between several notions of quantitative rectifiability for low-dimensional sets in $\mathbb{H}^n$.

Asymptotic analysis of fractional Sobolev spaces on thin films in the low-integrability regime

We study the behaviour of fractional Sobolev spaces $H^s(\Omega_\varepsilon)$ with $s\in(0,1/2)$ defined on ``thin films'' $\Omega_\varepsilon=\omega\times (0,\varepsilon)$ in $\mathbb R^d$, and prove that they tend to the space $H^{s+\frac12}(\omega)$ as $\varepsilon\to 0$. This is made precise by using a notion of dimension-reduction convergence, with respect to which suitably scaled Gagliardo seminorms define equicoercive functionals. Asymptotic results are proved for $s\to 0^+$ and $s\to 1/2^-$.

Curvature measures and the sub-Riemannian Gauss-Bonnet theorem

We adopt a measure-theoretic perspective on the Riemannian approximation scheme proving a sub-Riemannian Gauss-Bonnet theorem for surfaces in 3D contact manifolds. We show that the zero-order term in the limit is a singular measure supported on isolated characteristic points. In particular, this provides a unified interpretation of previous results. Moreover we give natural geometric conditions under which our result holds, namely when the surface admits characteristic points of finite order of degeneracy. This notion, which we introduce, extends the concept of mildly degenerate characteristic points for the Heisenberg group. As a byproduct, we prove that the mean curvature around an isolated characteristic point of finite order of degeneracy is locally integrable. In particular, this positively answers a question for analytic surfaces in every analytic 3D contact manifold.

Necessary and Sufficient Conditions for the Maz'ya-Shaposhnikova Formula in (Fractional) Sobolev Spaces

We investigate the asymptotic behavior, as $\varepsilon \to 0$, of nonlocal functionals $$ \mathcal{F}_{\varepsilon}(u) = \iint_{\mathbb{R}^N\times\mathbb{R}^N} \rho_{\varepsilon}(y-x)\,|u(x)-u(y)|^p\,dx\,dy,\qquad u\in L^p(\mathbb{R}^N),\quad 1\leqslant p<\infty, $$ associated with a general family of nonnegative measurable kernels $\{\rho_{\varepsilon}\}_{\varepsilon>0}$. Our primary aim is to single out the weakest moment-type assumptions on the family $\{\rho_{\varepsilon}\}_{\varepsilon>0}$ that are necessary and sufficient for the pointwise convergence $$ \lim_{\varepsilon\to 0}\mathcal{F}_{\varepsilon}(u)=2\|u\|_{L^p}^p $$ to hold for every $u$ in a prescribed subspace of $L^p(\mathbb{R}^N)$. In the canonical smooth regime of compactly supported functions ($u\in C_c^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^N)$) we show that convergence occurs when two optimal conditions are satisfied: (i) a mass-escape condition, and (ii) a short-range attenuation effect, expressed by the vanishing as $\varepsilon\to 0$ of the kernels' $p$-moments in any fixed neighborhood of the origin. This general framework recovers the classical Maz'ya--Shaposhnikova theorem for fractional-type kernels and extends the convergence result to a much broader class of interaction profiles, which may be non-symmetric and non-homogeneous. Using a density argument that preserves the moment assumptions, we prove that the same necessary and sufficient conditions remain valid in the integer-order Sobolev setting ($u\in W^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^N)$). Finally, by adapting the method to fractional Sobolev spaces $W^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ with $s\in(0,1)$, we recover the Maz'ya-Shaposhnikova formula and extend it under analogous abstract conditions on the family $\{\rho_{\varepsilon}\}_{\varepsilon>0}$.

Benamou-Brenier and Kantorovich on sub-Riemannian manifolds with no abnormal geodesics

We prove that the Benamou-Brenier formulation of the Optimal Transport problem and the Kantorovich formulation are equivalent on a sub-Riemannian connected and complete manifold $M$ without boundary and with no non-trivial abnormal geodesics, when the problems are considered between two measures with finite $2$-momentum. Furthermore, we prove the existence of a minimizer for the Benamou-Brenier formulation and link it to the optimal transport plan.

Chernoff solutions of the heat and the Schr\"odinger equation in the Heisenberg group

This paper investigates the application of the classical Chernoff's theorem to construct explicit solutions for the heat and Schr\"odinger equations on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^d$. Using semigroup approximation techniques, we obtain analytically tractable and numerically implementable representations of fundamental solutions. In particular, we establish a new connection between the heat equation and Brownian motion on $\mathbb{H}^d$ and provide a rigorous realization of the Feynman path integral for the Schr\"odinger equation. The study highlights the challenges posed by the noncommutative structure of the Heisenberg group and opens new directions for PDEs on sub-Riemannian manifolds.
