Necessary and Sufficient Conditions for the Maz'ya-Shaposhnikova Formula in (Fractional) Sobolev Spaces

We investigate the asymptotic behavior, as $\varepsilon \to 0$, of nonlocal functionals $$ \mathcal{F}_{\varepsilon}(u) = \iint_{\mathbb{R}^N\times\mathbb{R}^N} ρ_{\varepsilon}(y-x)\,|u(x)-u(y)|^p\,dx\,dy,\qquad u\in L^p(\mathbb{R}^N),\quad 1\leqslant p<\infty, $$ associated with a general family of nonnegative measurable kernels $\{ρ_{\varepsilon}\}_{\varepsilon>0}$. Our primary aim is to single out the weakest moment-type assumptions on the family $\{ρ_{\varepsilon}\}_{\varepsilon>0}$ that are necessary and sufficient for the pointwise convergence $$ \lim_{\varepsilon\to 0}\mathcal{F}_{\varepsilon}(u)=2\|u\|_{L^p}^p $$ to hold for every $u$ in a prescribed subspace of $L^p(\mathbb{R}^N)$. In the canonical smooth regime of compactly supported functions ($u\in C_c^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^N)$) we show that convergence occurs when two optimal conditions are satisfied: (i) a mass-escape condition, and (ii) a short-range attenuation effect, expressed by the vanishing as $\varepsilon\to 0$ of the kernels' $p$-moments in any fixed neighborhood of the origin. This general framework recovers the classical Maz'ya--Shaposhnikova theorem for fractional-type kernels and extends the convergence result to a much broader class of interaction profiles, which may be non-symmetric and non-homogeneous. Using a density argument that preserves the moment assumptions, we prove that the same necessary and sufficient conditions remain valid in the integer-order Sobolev setting ($u\in W^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^N)$). Finally, by adapting the method to fractional Sobolev spaces $W^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ with $s\in(0,1)$, we recover the Maz'ya-Shaposhnikova formula and extend it under analogous abstract conditions on the family $\{ρ_{\varepsilon}\}_{\varepsilon>0}$.

Curvature estimates for minimal hypersurfaces in the Heisenberg group

This paper examines minimal hypersurfaces in sub-Riemannian Heisenberg groups. We extend the celebrated Simons formula and Kato inequality to the sub-Riemannian setting, and we apply them to obtain integral curvature estimates for stable hypersurfaces. These results lead to structural conditions that imply a Bernstein-type rigidity theorem for smooth, non-characteristic hypersurfaces in the second Heisenberg group.

On some intrinsic differentiability properties for Absolutely continuous functions between Carnot groups and the Area formula

We discuss Q-absolutely continuous functions between Carnot groups, following Maly's definition for maps of several variables. Such maps enjoy nice regularity properties, like continuity, Pansu differentiability a.e., weak differentiability and an Area formula. Furthermore, we extend Stein's result concerning the sharp condition for continuity and differentiability a.e. of a Sobolev map in terms of the integrability of the weak gradient: more precisely, we prove that a Sobolev map between Carnot groups with horizontal gradient of its sections uniformly bounded in L(Q,1) admits a representative which is Q-absolutely continuous.

Chernoff solutions of the heat and the Schrödinger equation in the Heisenberg group

This paper investigates the application of the classical Chernoff's theorem to construct explicit solutions for the heat and Schrödinger equations on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^d$. Using semigroup approximation techniques, we obtain analytically tractable and numerically implementable representations of fundamental solutions. In particular, we establish a new connection between the heat equation and Brownian motion on $\mathbb{H}^d$ and provide a rigorous realization of the Feynman path integral for the Schrödinger equation. The study highlights the challenges posed by the noncommutative structure of the Heisenberg group and opens new directions for PDEs on sub-Riemannian manifolds.

A CR structure with blowing up solutions to the CR Yamabe problem

We prove the existence of a CR structure on $S^3$ such that the set of solutions to the CR Yamabe problem is not compact and admits a blowing-up sequence. Such CR structure is built deforming the standard CR structure of $S^3$ in the direction of the Rossi sphere CR structure on small balls, and the existence of the blowing-up sequence of solutions is proved through the Lyapunov-Schmidt method.

Universal Differentiability Sets in Laakso Space

We show that there exists a family of mutually singular doubling measures on Laakso space with respect to which real-valued Lipschitz functions are almost everywhere differentiable. This implies that there exists a measure zero universal differentiability set in Laakso space. Additionally, we show that each of the measures constructed supports a Poincaré inequality.

Hölder regularity of continuous solutions to balance laws and applications in the Heisenberg group

We prove Hölder regularity of any continuous solution $u$ to a $1$-D scalar balance law $u_t + [f(u)]_x = g$, when the source term $g$ is bounded and the flux $f$ is nonlinear of order $\ell \in \mathbb{N}$ with $\ell \ge 2$. For example, $\ell = 3$ if $f(u) = u^3$. Moreover, we prove that at almost every point $(t,x)$, it holds $u(t,x+h) - u(t,x) = o(|h|^{\frac{1}{\ell}})$ as $h \to 0$. Due to Lipschitz regularity along characteristics, this implies that at almost every point $(t,x)$, it holds $u(t+k,x+h) - u(t,x) = o((|h|+|k|)^{\frac{1}{\ell}})$ as $|(h,k)|\to 0$. We apply the results to provide a new proof of the Rademacher theorem for intrinsic Lipschitz functions in the first Heisenberg group.

The prescribed mean curvature equation for $t$-graphs in the sub-Finsler Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$

We study the sub-Finsler prescribed mean curvature equation, associated to a strictly convex body $K_0 \subseteq \mathbb{R}^{2n}$, for $t$-graphs on a bounded domain $Ω$ in the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$. When the prescribed datum $H$ is constant and strictly smaller that the Finsler mean curvature of $\partial Ω$, we prove the existence of a Lipschitz solution to the Dirichlet problem for the sub-Finsler CMC equation by means of a Finsler approximation scheme.

A characterization of horizontally totally geodesic hypersurfaces in Heisenberg groups

In this paper we achieve a first concrete step towards a better understanding of the so-called Bernstein problem in higher dimensional Heisenberg groups. Indeed, in the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$, with $n\geq 2$, we show that the only entire hypersurfaces with vanishing horizontal symmetric second fundamental form are hyperplanes. This result relies on a sub-Riemannian characterization of a higher dimensional ruling property, as well as on the study of sub-Riemannian geodesics on Heisenberg hypersurfaces.

On the asymptotic behaviour of the fractional Sobolev seminorms in metric measure spaces: asymptotic volume ratio, volume entropy and rigidity

We study the asymptotic behaviour of suitably defined seminorms in general metric measure spaces. As a particular case we provide new and shorter proofs of the Maz'ya-Shaposhnikova's theorem on the asymptotic behaviour of the fractional Sobolev $s$-seminorm, in the setting of metric measure spaces and with general mollifiers, as well as of the Ludwig's result on finite dimensional Banach spaces. Our result also provides new spaces satisfying an asymptotic formula and it also builds a link between the asymptotic formula for functions and the asymptotic volume ratio of a metric measure space. In addition, we prove two related rigidity results for metric measure spaces with synthetic Ricci curvature bound which are new even in the smooth setting.

Maz'ya-Shaposhnikova meet Bishop-Gromov

We find a surprising link between Maz'ya-Shaposhnikova's well-known asymptotic formula concerning fractional Sobolev seminorms and the generalized Bishop-Gromov inequality. In the setting of abstract metric measure spaces we prove the validity of a large family of asymptotic formulas concerning non-local energies. Important examples which are covered by our approach are for instance Carnot groups, Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below and non-collapsed RCD spaces. We also extend the classical Maz'ya-Shaposhnikova's formula on Euclidean spaces to a wider class of mollifiers.

Lipschitz approximation of almost $\mathbb G$-perimeter minimizing boundaries in plentiful groups

We prove that the boundary of an almost minimizer of the intrinsic perimeter in a plentiful group can be approximated by intrinsic Lipschitz graphs. Plentiful groups are Carnot groups of step~$2$ whose center of the Lie algebra is generated by any co-dimension one horizontal subspace. For example, $H$-type groups not isomorphic to the first Heisenberg group are plentiful. Our results provide the first extension of the regularity theory of intrinsic minimal surfaces beyond the family of Heisenberg groups.

BV functions and nonlocal functionals in metric measure spaces

We study the asymptotic behavior of three classes of nonlocal functionals in complete metric spaces equipped with a doubling measure and supporting a Poincaré inequality. We show that the limits of these nonlocal functionals are comparable to the variation $\| Df\|(Ω)$ or the Sobolev semi-norm $\int_Ωg_f^p\, dμ$, which extends Euclidean results to metric measure spaces. In contrast to the classical setting, we also give an example to show that the limits are not always equal to the corresponding total variation even for Lipschitz functions.

Higher order Whitney extension and Lusin approximation for Horizontal curves in the Heisenberg group

In the setting of horizontal curves in the Heisenberg group, we prove a $C^{m,ω}$ finiteness principle, a $C^{m,ω}$ Lusin approximation result, a $C^{\infty}$ Whitney extension result, and a $C^{\infty}$ Lusin approximation result. Combined with previous work, this completes the study of Whitney extension and Lusin approximation for horizontal curves of class $C^{m}$, $C^{m,ω}$, and $C^{\infty}$ in the Heisenberg group.

Existence and uniqueness theorems for some semi-linear equations on locally finite graphs

We study some semi-linear equations for the $(m,p)$-Laplacian operator on locally finite weighted graphs. We prove existence of weak solutions for all $m\in\mathbb{N}$ and $p\in(1,+\infty)$ via a variational method already known in the literature by exploiting the continuity properties of the energy functionals involved. When $m=1$, we also establish a uniqueness result in the spirit of the Brezis-Strauss Theorem. We finally provide some applications of our main results by dealing with some Yamabe-type and Kazdan-Warner-type equations on locally finite weighted graphs.

The equality case in the substatic Heintze-Karcher inequality

We provide a rigidity statement for the equality case for the Heintze-Karcher inequality in substatic manifolds. We apply such result in the warped product setting to fully remove assumption (H4) in the celebrated Brendle's characterization of constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in warped products.

Weighted Sobolev Spaces on Metric Measure Spaces

We investigate weighted Sobolev spaces on metric measure spaces $(X,d,m)$. Denoting by $ρ$ the weight function, we compare the space $W^{1,p}(X,d,ρm)$ (which always concides with the closure $H^{1,p}(X,d,ρm)$ of Lipschitz functions) with the weighted Sobolev spaces $W^{1,p}_ρ(X,d,m)$ and $H^{1,p}_ρ(X,d,m)$ defined as in the Euclidean theory of weighted Sobolev spaces. Under mild assumptions on the metric measure structure and on the weight we show that $W^{1,p}(X,d,ρm)=H^{1,p}_ρ(X,d, m)$. We also adapt results by Muckenhoupt and recent work by Zhikov to the metric measure setting, considering appropriate conditions on $ρ$ that ensure the equality $W^{1,p}_ρ(X,d,m)=H^{1,p}_ρ(X,d,m)$.
