B-anomalies related to leptons and lepton flavour universality violation

Several experiments observed deviations from the Standard Model (SM) in the flavour sector: LHCb found a $4-5\,σ$ discrepancy compared to the SM in $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ transitions (recently supported by an Belle analysis) and CMS reported a non-zero measurement of $h\toμτ$ with a significance of $2.4\,σ$. Furthermore, BELLE, BABAR and LHCb founds hints for the violation of flavour universality in $B\to D^{(*)}τν$. In addition, there is the long-standing discrepancy in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. Interestingly, all these anomalies are related to muons and taus, while the corresponding electron channels seem to be SM like. This suggests that these deviations from the SM might be correlated and we briefly review some selected models providing simultaneous explanations.

1-Loop Matching of gauge invariant dim-6 operators for B decays

Physics beyond the Standard Model, realized above the electroweak scale, can be incorporated in a model independent way in the Wilson coefficients of higher dimensional gauge invariant operators. In these proceedings we review the matching of the $SU(3)_C\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ gauge invariant dimension-six operators on the effective Hamiltonian governing $b\to s$ and $b\to c$ transitions, including the leading 1-loop effects.

Lepton flavor (universality) violation in rare kaon decays

Recent anomalies in the decays of $B$ mesons and the Higgs boson provide hints towards lepton flavor (universality) violating physics beyond the Standard Model. We observe that four-fermion operators which can explain the $B$-physics anomalies have corresponding analogs in the kaon sector, and we analyze their impact on $K\toπ\ell \ell'$ and $K\to\ell \ell'$ decays $(\ell=μ,e)$. For these processes, we note the corresponding physics opportunities at the NA62 experiment. In particular, assuming minimal flavor violation, we comment on the required improvements in sensitivity necessary to test the $B$-physics anomalies in the kaon sector.

A $L_μ- L_τ$ theory of Higgs flavor violation and $(g-2)_μ$

Several experiments reported hints for the violation of lepton flavor or lepton flavor universality in processes involving muons. Most prominently, there is the hint for a non-zero rate of the flavor violating Higgs decay $h \to τμ$ at the LHC, as well as the hint for lepton flavor universality violation in rare $B$ meson decays at LHCb. In addition, also the long standing discrepancy in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon motivates new physics connected to muons. A symmetry which violates lepton flavor universality, is $L_μ-L_τ$: the difference of muon-number and tau-number. We show that adding vector-like fermions to a $L_μ-L_τ$ theory generates naturally an effect in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and $h\toτμ$, while effects in other $τ\to μ$ transitions are systematically suppressed by symmetry arguments. We find that if $L_μ-L_τ$ is gauged it is possible to also accommodate the discrepant $b\to sμμ$ data while predicting a $τ\to3μ$ and a modified $h\toμμ$ rate within reach of upcoming experiments.

Stop searches in flavourful supersymmetry

Natural realisations of supersymmetry require light stops ${\tilde t}_1$, making them a prime target of LHC searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. Depending on the kinematic region, the main search channels are ${\tilde t_1}\to t \tilde χ^0_1$, ${\tilde t_1}\to W b \tilde χ^0_1$ and ${\tilde t_1}\to c \tilde χ^0_1$. We first examine the interplay of these decay modes with ${\tilde c_1}\to c \tilde χ^0_1$ in a model-independent fashion, revealing the existence of large regions in parameter space which are excluded for any ${\tilde t_1}\to c \tilde χ^0_1$ branching ratio. This effect is then illustrated for scenarios with stop-scharm mixing in the right-handed sector, where it has previously been observed that the stop mass limits can be significantly weakened for large mixing. Our analysis shows that once the LHC bounds from ${\tilde c_1}\to c \tilde χ^0_1$ searches are taken into account, non-zero stop-scharm mixing leads only to a modest increase in the allowed regions of parameter space, with large areas excluded for arbitrary mixing angles.

New Physics in $B$ decays

While the LHC did not observe direct evidence for physics beyond the standard model, indirect hints for new physics were uncovered in the flavour sector in the decays $B\to K^*μ^+μ^-$, $B\to Kμ^+μ^-/B\to Ke^+e^-$, $B_s\toϕμ^+μ^-$, $B\to D^{(*)}τν$ and $h\toτ^\pmμ^\mp$. Each observable deviates from the SM predictions at the $2-3\,σ$ level only, but combining all $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ data via a global fit, one finds $4-5\,σ$ difference for NP compared to the SM and combining $B\to D^{*}τν$ with $B\to Dτν$ one obtains $3.9\,σ$. While $B\to D^{(*)}τν$ and $h\toτμ$ can be naturally explained by an extended Higgs sector, the $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ anomalies point at a $Z'$ gauge boson. However, it is also possible to explain $B\to D^{(*)}τν$ and $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ simultaneously with leptoquarks while their effect in $h\toτ^\pmμ^\mp$ is far too small to account for current data. Combining a 2HDM with a gauged $L_μ-L_τ$ symmetry allows for explaining the $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ anomalies in combination with $h\toτ^\pmμ^\mp$, predicting interesting correlations with $τ\to3μ$. In the light of these deviations from the SM we also discuss the possibilities of observing lepton flavour violating $B$ decays (e.g. $B\to K^{(*)}τ^\pmμ^\mp$ and $B_s\toτ^\pmμ^\mp$).

Higgs-bosons couplings to quarks and leptons in the supersymmetric Standard Model with a gauge singlet

The loop corrections to the couplings of Higgs bosons to quarks and charged leptons are calculated within supersymmetric versions of the Standard Model, extended by a gauge singlet. The effective couplings of the $SU(2)_L$ doublet and singlet Higgs bosons to quarks and leptons, induced by sfermion loops, are derived. Analytic expressions for the case of generic sfermion flavour mixing, including the complete resummation of all chirally-enhanced contributions are presented. These results are important in scenarios in which the mixing between singlet and doublet components of Higgs bosons is small, and the (pseudo) scalar component of the doublet is light. The calculated loop effects can have important consequences in flavour physics, especially for $ΔF=2$ processes.

Lepton-flavour violating $B$ decays in generic $Z^\prime$ models

LHCb has reported deviations from the Standard Model in $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ transitions for which a new neutral gauge boson is a prime candidate for an explanation. As this gauge boson has to couple in a flavour non-universal way to muons and electrons in order to explain $R_K$, it is interesting to examine the possibility that also lepton flavour is violated, especially in the light of the CMS excess in $h\toτ^\pmμ^\mp$. In this article, we investigate the perspectives to discover the lepton-flavour violating modes $B\to K^{(*)}τ^\pmμ^\mp$, $B_s\to τ^\pmμ^\mp$ and $B\to K^{(*)} μ^\pm e^\mp$, $B_s\to μ^\pm e^\mp$. For this purpose we consider a simplified model in which new-physics effects originate from an additional neutral gauge boson ($Z^\prime$) with generic couplings to quarks and leptons. The constraints from $τ\to3μ$, $τ\toμν\barν$, $μ\to eγ$, $g_μ-2$, semi-leptonic $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ decays, $B\to K^{(*)}νν$ and $B_s$--$\overline{B}_s$ mixing are examined. From these decays, we determine upper bounds on the decay rates of lepton flavour violating $B$ decays. $Br(B\to Kνν)$ limits the branching ratios of LFV $B$ decays to be smaller than $8\times 10^{-5} (2\times 10^{-5})$ for vectorial (left-handed) lepton couplings. However, much stronger bounds can be obtained by a combined analysis of $B_s$--$\overline{B}_s$, $τ\to3μ$, $τ\toμν\barν$ and other rare decays. The bounds depend on the amount of fine-tuning among the contributions to $B_s$--$\overline{B}_s$ mixing. Allowing for a fine-tuning at the percent level we find upper bounds of the order of $10^{-6}$ for branching ratios into $τμ$ final states, while $B_s\to μ^\pm e^\mp$ is strongly suppressed and only $B\to K^{(*)} μ^\pm e^\mp$ can be experimentally accessible (with a branching ratio of order $10^{-7}$).

Light stops, blind spots, and isospin violation in the MSSM

In the framework of the MSSM, we examine several simplified models where only a few superpartners are light. This allows us to study WIMP--nucleus scattering in terms of a handful of MSSM parameters and thereby scrutinize their impact on dark matter direct-detection experiments. Focusing on spin-independent WIMP--nucleon scattering, we derive simplified, analytic expressions for the Wilson coefficients associated with Higgs and squark exchange. We utilize these results to study the complementarity of constraints due to direct-detection, flavor, and collider experiments. We also identify parameter configurations that produce (almost) vanishing cross sections. In the proximity of these so-called blind spots, we find that the amount of isospin violation may be much larger than typically expected in the MSSM. This feature is a generic property of parameter regions where cross sections are suppressed, and highlights the importance of a careful analysis of the nucleon matrix elements and the associated hadronic uncertainties. This becomes especially relevant once the increased sensitivity of future direct-detection experiments corners the MSSM into these regions of parameter space.

A perturbed lepton-specific two-Higgs-doublet model facing experimental hints for physics beyond the Standard Model

The BaBar, Belle, and LHCb collaborations have reported evidence for new physics in $B\to Dτν$ and $B\to D^*τν$ of approximately $3.8σ$. There is also the long lasting discrepancy of about $3σ$ in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, and the branching ratio for $τ\toμνν$ is $1.8σ$ ($2.4σ$) above the Standard Model expectation using the HFAG (PDG) values. Furthermore, CMS found hints for a non-zero decay rate of $h\toμτ$. Interestingly, all these observations can be explained by introducing new scalars. In this article we consider these processes within a lepton-specific two-Higgs doublet model (i.e. of type X) with additional non-standard Yukawa couplings. It is found that one can accommodate $τ\toμνν$ with modified Higgs--$τ$ couplings. The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon can be explained if the additional neutral CP-even Higgs $H$ is light (below 100 GeV). Also $R(D)$ and $R(D^*)$ can be easily explained by additional $t$--$c$--Higgs couplings. Combining these $t$--$c$ couplings with a light $H$ the decay rate for $t\to H c$ can be in a testable range for the LHC. Effects in $h\toμτ$ are also possible, but in this case a simultaneous explanation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is difficult due to the unavoidable $τ\toμγ$ decay.

The Flavour Portal to Dark Matter

We present a class of models in which dark matter (DM) is a fermionic singlet under the Standard Model (SM) gauge group but is charged under a symmetry of flavour that acts as well on the SM fermions. Interactions between DM and SM particles are mediated by the scalar fields that spontaneously break the flavour symmetry, the so-called flavons. In the case of gauged flavour symmetries, the interactions are also mediated by the flavour gauge bosons. We first discuss the construction and the generic features of this class of models. Then a concrete example with an abelian flavour symmetry is considered. We compute the complementary constraints from the relic abundance, direct detection experiments and flavour observables, showing that wide portions of the parameter space are still viable. Other possibilities like non-abelian flavour symmetries can be analysed within the same framework.

Effective field theory approach to $b\to s\ell\ell^{(\prime)}$, $B\to K^{(*)}ν\barν$ and $B\to D^{(*)}τν$ with third generation couplings

LHCb reported anomalies in $B\to K^* μ^+μ^-$, $B_s\toϕμ^+μ^-$ and $R(K)=B\to K μ^+μ^-/B\to K e^+e^-$. Furthermore, BaBar, BELLE and LHCb found hints for the violation of lepton flavour universality violation in $R(D^{(*)})=B\to D^{(*)}τν/B\to D^{(*)}\ellν$. In this note we reexamine these decays and their correlations to $B\to K^{(*)}ν\barν$ using gauge invariant dim-6 operators. For the numerical analysis we focus on scenarios in which new physics couples, in the interaction eigenbasis, to third generation quarks and lepton only. We conclude that such a setup can explain the $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ data simultaneously with $R(D^{(*)})$ for small mixing angles in the lepton sector (of the order of $π/16$) and very small mixing angles in the quark sector (smaller than $V_{cb}$). In these region of parameter space $B\to K^{(*)}τμ$ and $B_s\to τμ$ can be order $10^{-6}$. Possible UV completions are briefly discussed.

Dark Matter: Connecting LHC searches to direct detection

In these proceedings we review the interplay between LHC searches for dark matter and direct detection experiments. For this purpose we consider two prime examples: the effective field theory (EFT) approach and the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). In the EFT scenario we show that for operators which do not enter directly direct detection at tree-level, but only via loop effects, LHC searches give complementary constraints. In the MSSM stop and Higgs exchange contribute to the direct detection amplitude. Therefore, LHC searches for supersymmetric particles and heavy Higgses place constraints on the same parameter space as direct detection.

Explaining the LHC flavour anomalies

The LHC observed deviations from the Standard Model (SM) in the flavour sector: LHCb found a $4.3\,σ$ discrepancy compared to the SM in $b\to sμμ$ transitions and CMS reported a non-zero measurement of $h\toμτ$ with a significance of $2.4\,σ$. Here we discuss how these deviations from the SM can be explained, focusing on two models with gauged $L_μ-L_τ$ symmetry. The first model contains two scalar doublets and vector-like quarks while the second one employs three scalar doublets but does not require vector-like fermions. In both models, interesting correlations between $b\to sμμ$ transitions, $h\toμτ$, and $τ\to3μ$ arise.

$B$ Decays and Lepton Flavour (Universality) Violation

LHCb found hints for physics beyond the standard model in $B\to K^*μ^+μ^-$, $B\to K^*μ^+μ^-/B\to K^*e^+e^-$ and $B_s\toϕμ^+μ^-$. In addition, the BABAR results for $B\to D^{(*)}τν$ and the CMS excess in $h\toτ^\pmμ^\mp$ also point towards lepton flavour (universality) violating new physics. While $B\to D^{(*)}τν$ and $h\toτ^\pmμ^\mp$ can be naturally explained by an extended Higgs sector, the probably most promising explanation for the $b\to sμμ$ anomalies is a $Z'$ boson. Furthermore, combining a 2HDM with a gauged $L_μ-L_τ$ symmetry allows for explaining the $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ anomalies and $h\toτ^\pmμ^\mp$ simultaneously, with interesting correlations to $τ\to3μ$. In the light of these deviations from the SM we also discuss the possibilities of observing lepton flavour violating $B$ decays (e.g. $B\to K^{(*)}τ^\pmμ^\mp$ and $B_s\toτ^\pmμ^\mp$) in $Z^\prime$ models.

Addressing the LHC flavour anomalies with horizontal gauge symmetries

We study the impact of an additional $U(1)'$ gauge symmetry with flavour-dependent charges for quarks and leptons on the LHC flavour anomalies observed in $B \to K^* μ^+μ^-$, $R(K) = B \to K μ^+μ^-/B \to K e^+e^-$, and $h \to μτ$. In its minimal version with two scalar doublets, the resulting model naturally explains the deviations from the Standard Model observed in $B \to K^* μ^+μ^-$ and $R(K)$. The CMS access in $h \to μτ$ can be explained by introducing a third scalar doublet, which gives rise to a prediction for $τ\to 3μ$. We investigate constraints from flavour observables and direct LHC searches for $pp \to Z' \to μ^+μ^-$. Our model successfully generates the measured fermion-mixing matrices and does not require vector-like fermions, unlike previous attempts to explain these anomalies.

LHC constraints on gauge boson couplings to dark matter

Collider searches for energetic particles recoiling against missing transverse energy allow to place strong bounds on the interactions between dark matter (DM) and standard model particles. In this article we update and extend LHC constraints on effective dimension-7 operators involving DM and electroweak gauge bosons. A concise comparison of the sensitivity of the mono-photon, mono-W, mono-Z, mono-W/Z, invisible Higgs-boson decays in the vector boson fusion mode and the mono-jet channel is presented. Depending on the parameter choices, either the mono-photon or the mono-jet data provide the most stringent bounds at the moment. We furthermore explore the potential of improving the current 8 TeV limits at 14 TeV. Future strategies capable of disentangling the effects of the different effective operators involving electroweak gauge bosons are discussed as well.
