Application of the Biot-Savart Law to Parabolic Vortex Segments using Elliptic Integrals

The Biot-Savart law is used in aerodynamic theory to calculate the velocity induced by curved vortex lines. Explicit formulas are developed, using multivariate Appell hypergeometric functions, for the velocity induced by a general parabolic vortex segment. The formulas are derived by constructing a particular pencil of elliptic curves whose period integrals provide the solution to the induced velocity. We use numerical integration and a perturbation expansion to evaluate the validity of our formulas.

Kummer sandwiches and Greene-Plesser construction

In the context of K3 mirror symmetry, the Greene-Plesser orbifolding method constructs a family of K3 surfaces, the mirror of quartic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$, starting from a special one-parameter family of K3 varieties known as the quartic Dwork pencil. We show that certain K3 double covers obtained from the three-parameter family of quartic Kummer surfaces associated with a principally polarized abelian surface generalize the relation of the Dwork pencil and the quartic mirror family. Moreover, for the three-parameter family we compute a formula for the rational point-count of its generic member and derive its transformation behavior with respect to $(2,2)$-isogenies of the underlying abelian surface.

From the signature theorem to anomaly cancellation

We survey the Hirzebruch signature theorem as a special case of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. The family version of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem in the form of the Riemann-Roch-Grothendieck-Quillen (RRGQ) formula is then applied to the complexified signature operators varying along the universal family of elliptic curves. The RRGQ formula allows us to determine a generalized cohomology class on the base of the elliptic fibration that is known in physics as (a measure of) the local and global anomaly. Combining several anomalous operators allows us to cancel the local anomaly on a Jacobian elliptic surface, a construction that is based on the construction of the Poincaré line bundle over an elliptic surface.

On isogenies among certain abelian surfaces

We construct a three-parameter family of non-hyperelliptic and bielliptic plane genus-three curves whose associated Prym variety is two-isogenous to the Jacobian variety of a general hyperelliptic genus-two curve. Our construction is based on the existence of special elliptic fibrations with the section on the associated Kummer surfaces that provide a simple geometric interpretation for the rational double cover induced by the two-isogeny between the abelian surfaces.

Six line configurations and string dualities

We study the family of K3 surfaces of Picard rank sixteen associated with the double cover of the projective plane branched along the union of six lines, and the family of its Van Geemen-Sarti partners, i.e., K3 surfaces with special Nikulin involutions, such that quotienting by the involution and blowing up recovers the former. We prove that the family of Van Geemen-Sarti partners is a four-parameter family of K3 surfaces with $H \oplus E_7(-1) \oplus E_7(-1)$ lattice polarization. We describe explicit Weierstrass models on both families using even modular forms on the bounded symmetric domain of type $IV$. We also show that our construction provides a geometric interpretation, called geometric two-isogeny, for the F-theory/heterotic string duality in eight dimensions. As a result, we obtain novel F-theory models, dual to non-geometric heterotic string compactifications in eight dimensions with two non-vanishing Wilson line parameters.

Normal forms for Kummer surfaces

We determine normal forms for the Kummer surfaces associated with abelian surfaces of polarization of type $(1,1)$, $(1,2)$, $(2,2)$, $(2,4)$, and $(1,4)$. Explicit formulas for coordinates and moduli parameters in terms of Theta functions of genus two are also given. The normal forms in question are closely connected to the generalized Riemann identities for Theta functions of Mumford's.

Counting Rational Points on Kummer surfaces

We consider the problem of counting the number of rational points on the family of Kummer surfaces associated with two non-isogenous elliptic curves. For this two-parameter family we prove Manin's unity, using the presentation of the Kummer surfaces as isotrivial elliptic fibration and as double cover of the modular elliptic surface of level two. By carrying out the rational point-count with respect to either of the two elliptic fibrations explicitly, we obtain an interesting new identity between two-parameter counting functions.

From hyperelliptic to superelliptic curves

In this long survey article we show that the theory of elliptic and hyperelliptic curves can be extended naturally to all superelliptic curves. We focus on automorphism groups, stratification of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$, binary forms, invariants of curves, weighted projective spaces, minimal models for superelliptic curves, field of moduli versus field of definition, theta functions, Jacobian varieties, addition law in the Jacobian, isogenies among Jacobians, etc. Many recent developments on the theory of superelliptic curves are provided as well as many open problems.

Calabi-Yau manifolds realizing symplectically rigid monodromy tuples

We define an iterative construction that produces a family of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau $n$-folds with section from a family of elliptic Calabi-Yau varieties of one dimension lower. Parallel to the geometric construction, we iteratively obtain for each family with a point of maximal unipotent monodromy, normalized to be at t=0, its Picard-Fuchs operator and a closed-form expression for the period holomorphic at t=0, through a generalization of the classical Euler transform for hypergeometric functions. In particular, our construction yields one-parameter families of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with section whose Picard-Fuchs operators realize all symplectically rigid Calabi-Yau differential operators with three regular singular points classified by Bogner and Reiter, but also non-rigid operators with four singular points.

Nikulin involutions and the CHL string

We study certain even-eight curve configurations on a specific class of Jacobian elliptic K3 surfaces with lattice polarizations of rank ten. These configurations are associated with K3 double covers, some of which are elliptic but not Jacobian elliptic. Several non-generic cases corresponding to K3 surfaces of higher Picard rank are also discussed. Finally, the results and the construction in question are interpreted in the context of the string dualities linked with the eight-dimensional CHL string.

A Universal Genus-Two Curve from Siegel Modular Forms

Let $\mathfrak p$ be any point in the moduli space of genus-two curves $\mathcal M_2$ and $K$ its field of moduli. We provide a universal equation of a genus-two curve $\mathcal C_{α, β}$ defined over $K(α, β)$, corresponding to $\mathfrak p$, where $α$ and $β$ satisfy a quadratic $α^2+ b β^2= c$ such that $b$ and $c$ are given in terms of ratios of Siegel modular forms. The curve $\mathcal C_{α, β}$ is defined over the field of moduli $K$ if and only if the quadratic has a $K$-rational point $(α, β)$. We discover some interesting symmetries of the Weierstrass equation of $\mathcal C_{α, β}$. This extends previous work of Mestre and others.

On the geometry of (1,2)-polarized Kummer surfaces

We discuss several geometric features of a Kummer surface associated with a (1,2)-polarized abelian surface defined over the field of complex numbers. In particular, we show that any such Kummer surface can be modeled as the double cover of the projective plane branched along six lines, three of which meet a common point. The proof uses certain explicit pencils of plane quartic bielliptic genus-three curves whose associated Prym varieties are naturally (1,2)-polarized abelian surfaces.

The Satake sextic in elliptic fibrations on K3

We describe explicit formulas relevant to the F-theory/heterotic string duality that reconstruct from a specific Jacobian elliptic fibration on the Shioda-Inose surface covering a generic Kummer surface the corresponding genus-two curve using the level-two Satake coordinate functions. We derive explicitly the rational map on the moduli space of genus-two curves realizing the algebraic correspondence between a sextic curve and its Satake sextic. We will prove that it is not the original sextic defining the genus-two curve, but its corresponding Satake sextic which is manifest in the F-theory model, dual to the $\mathfrak{so}(32)$ heterotic string with an unbroken $\mathfrak{so}(28)\oplus \mathfrak{su}(2)$ gauge algebra.

Jacobian elliptic Kummer surfaces and special function identities

We derive formulas for the construction of all inequivalent Jacobian elliptic fibrations on the Kummer surface of two non-isogeneous elliptic curves from extremal rational elliptic surfaces by rational base transformations and quadratic twists. We then show that each such decomposition yields a description of the Picard-Fuchs system satisfied by the periods of the holomorphic two-form as either a tensor product of two Gauss' hypergeometric differential equations, an Appell hypergeometric system, or a GKZ differential system. As the answer must be independent of the fibration used, identities relating differential systems are obtained. They include a new identity relating Appell's hypergeometric system to a product of two Gauss' hypergeometric differential equations by a cubic transformation.

Special function identities from superelliptic Kummer varieties

We prove that the factorization of Appell's generalized hypergeometric series satisfying the so-called quadric property into a product of two Gauss' hypergeometric functions has a geometric origin: we first construct a generalized Kummer variety as minimal nonsingular model for a product-quotient surface with only rational double points from a pair of superelliptic curves of genus $2r-1$ with $r \in \mathbb{N}$. We then show that this generalized Kummer variety is equipped with two fibrations with fibers of genus $2r-1$. When periods of a holomorphic two-form over carefully crafted transcendental two-cycles on the generalized Kummer variety are evaluated using either of the two fibrations, the answer must be independent of the fibration and the aforementioned family of special function identities is obtained. This family of identities can be seen as a multivariate generalization of Clausen's Formula. Interestingly, this paper's finding bridges Ernst Kummer's two independent lines of research, algebraic transformations for the Gauss' hypergeometric function and nodal surfaces of degree four in $\mathbb{P}^3$.

K3 surfaces, modular forms, and non-geometric heterotic compactifications

We construct non-geometric compactifications by using the F-theory dual of the heterotic string compactified on a two-torus, together with a close connection between Siegel modular forms of genus two and the equations of certain K3 surfaces. The modular group mixes together the Kähler, complex structure, and Wilson line moduli of the torus yielding weakly coupled heterotic string compactifications which have no large radius interpretation.

SU(2)-Donaldson invariants of the complex projective plane

There are two families of Donaldson invariants for the complex projective plane, corresponding to the SU(2)-gauge theory and the SO(3)-gauge theory with non-trivial Stiefel-Whitney class. In 1997 Moore and Witten conjectured that the regularized u-plane integral on the complex projective plane gives the generating functions for these invariants. In earlier work the second two authors proved the conjecture for the SO(3)-gauge theory. Here we complete the proof of the conjecture by confirming the claim for the SU(2)-gauge theory. As a consequence, we find that the SU(2) Donaldson invariants for CP^2 are explicit linear combinations of the Hurwitz class numbers which arise in the theory of imaginary quadratic fields and orders.

SO(3)-Donaldson invariants of CP^2 and Mock Theta Functions

We compute the Moore-Witten regularized u-plane integral on CP^2, and we confirm their conjecture that it is the generating function for the SO(3)-Donaldson invariants of CP^2. We prove this conjecture using the theory of mock theta functions and harmonic Maass forms. We also derive further such generating functions for the SO(3)-Donaldson invariants with 2N_f massless monopoles using the geometry of certain rational elliptic surfaces (N_f=0,2,3,4). We show that the partition function for N_f=4 is nearly modular. When combined with one of Ramanujan's mock theta functions, we obtain a weight 1/2 modular form. This fact is central to the proof of the conjecture.
