Proof of Zamolodchikov conjecture for semi-classical conformal blocks on the torus

In 1986, Zamolodchikov conjectured an exponential structure for the semi-classical limit of conformal blocks on a sphere. This paper provides a rigorous proof of the analog of Zamolodchikov conjecture for Liouville conformal blocks on a one-punctured torus, using their probabilistic construction and show the existence of a positive radius of convergence of the semi-classical limit. As a consequence, we obtain a closed form expression for the solution of the Lam\'e equation, and show a relation between its accessory parameter and the classical action of the non-autonomous elliptic Calogero-Moser model evaluated at specific values of the solution.

Asymptotic properties of special function solutions of Painlev\'e III equation for fixed parameters

In this paper, we compute the small and large $x$ asymptotics of the special function solutions of Painlev\'e-III equation in the complex plane. We use the representation in terms of Toeplitz determinants of Bessel functions obtained in arXiv:nlin/0302026. Toeplitz determinants are rewritten as multiple contour integrals using Andr\`eief's identity. The small and large $x$ asymptotics are obtained using elementary asymptotic methods applied to the multiple contour integral. The asymptotics is extended to the whole complex plane using analytic continuation formulas for Bessel functions. The claimed result has not appeared in the literature before. We note that Toeplitz determinant representation is useful for numerical computations of corresponding solutions of the Painlev\'e-III equation.

Nonlinear steepest descent on a torus: A case study of the Landau-Lifshitz equation

We obtain rigorous large time asymptotics for the Landau-Lifshitz equation in the soliton free case by extending the nonlinear steepest descent method to genus 1 surfaces. The methods presented in this paper pave the way to a rigorous analysis of other integrable equations on the torus and enable asymptotic analysis on different regimes of the Landau-Lifshitz equation.

Painlev\'e-III Monodromy Maps Under the $D_6\to D_8$ Confluence and Applications to the Large-Parameter Asymptotics of Rational Solutions

The third Painlev\'e equation in its generic form, often referred to as Painlev\'e-III($D_6$), is given by $$ \frac{{\rm d}^2u}{{\rm d}x^2} =\frac{1}{u}\left(\frac{{\rm d}u}{{\rm d}x}\right)^2-\frac{1}{x}\frac{{\rm d}u}{{\rm d}x}+\frac{\alpha u^2+\beta}{x}+4u^3-\frac{4}{u}, \qquad \alpha,\beta \in \mathbb C.$$ Starting from a generic initial solution $u_0(x)$ corresponding to parameters $\alpha$, $\beta$, denoted as the triple $(u_0(x),\alpha,\beta)$, we apply an explicit B\"acklund transformation to generate a family of solutions $(u_n(x),\alpha+4n,\beta+4n)$ indexed by $n \in \mathbb N$. We study the large $n$ behavior of the solutions $(u_n(x),\alpha+4n,\beta+4n)$ under the scaling $x=z/n$ in two different ways: (a) analyzing the convergence properties of series solutions to the equation, and (b) using a Riemann-Hilbert representation of the solution $u_n(z/n)$. Our main result is a proof that the limit of solutions $u_n(z/n)$ exists and is given by a solution of the degenerate Painlev\'e-III equation, known as Painlev\'e-III($D_8$), $$ \frac{{\rm d}^2U}{{\rm d}z^2} =\frac{1}{U}\left(\frac{{\rm d}U}{{\rm d}z}\right)^2-\frac{1}{z}\frac{{\rm d}U}{{\rm d}z}+\frac{4U^2+4}{z}.$$ A notable application of our result is to rational solutions of Painlev\'e-III($D_6$), which are constructed using the seed solution $(1,4m,-4m)$ where $m \in \mathbb C \setminus \big(\mathbb Z +\frac{1}{2}\big)$ and can be written as a particular ratio of Umemura polynomials. We identify the limiting solution in terms of both its initial condition at $z=0$ when it is well defined, and by its monodromy data in the general case. Furthermore, as a consequence of our analysis, we deduce the asymptotic behavior of generic solutions of Painlev\'e-III, both $D_6$ and $D_8$ at $z=0$. We also deduce the large $n$ behavior of the Umemura polynomials in a neighborhood of $z=0$.

Differential equations for the KPZ and periodic KPZ fixed points

The KPZ fixed point is a 2d random field, conjectured to be the universal limiting fluctuation field for the height function of models in the KPZ universality class. Similarly, the periodic KPZ fixed point is a conjectured universal field for spatially periodic models. For both fields, their multi-point distributions in the space-time domain have been computed recently. We show that for the case of the narrow-wedge initial condition, these multi-point distributions can be expressed in terms of so-called integrable operators. We then consider a class of operators that include the ones arising from the KPZ and the periodic KPZ fixed points, and find that they are related to various matrix integrable differential equations such as coupled matrix mKdV equations, coupled matrix NLS equations with complex time, and matrix KP-II equations. When applied to the KPZ fixed points, our results extend previously known differential equations for one-point distributions and equal-time, multi-position distributions to multi-time, multi-position setup.

On $\beta=6$ Tracy-Widom distribution and the second Calogero-Painlev\'e system

The Calogero-Painlev\'e systems were introduced in 2001 by K. Takasaki as a natural generalization of the classical Painlev\'e equations to the case of the several Painlev\'e ``particles'' coupled via the Calogero type interactions. In 2014, I. Rumanov discovered the remarkable fact that a particular case of the second Calogero-Painlev\'e II equation describes the Tracy-Widom distribution function for the general beta-ensembles with even values of the parameter beta. Most recently, in 2017 work of M. Bertola, M. Cafasso, and V. Rubtsov, it was proven that all Calogero-Painlev\'e systems are Lax integrable, and hence their solutions admit a Riemann-Hilbert representation. This important observation has opened the door to rigorous, based on the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method, asymptotic analysis of the Calogero-Painlev\'e equations. This in turn yields the possibility of rigorous evaluation of the asymptotic behavior of the Tracy-Widom distributions for the values of beta beyond the classical $\beta =1, 2, 4.$ In this work we shall start an asymptotic analysis of the Calogero-Painlev\'e system with a special focus on the Calogero-Painlev\'e system corresponding to $\beta = 6$ Tracy-Widom distribution function. The principle technical challenge is the implementation of the nonlinear steepest descent approach beyond the $2\times 2$ matrix dimension of the corresponding Riemann-Hilbert problem; in our case, it is $6\times 6$.

Mixed moments of characteristic polynomials of random unitary matrices

Following the work of Conrey, Rubinstein and Snaith and Forrester and Witte we examine a mixed moment of the characteristic polynomial and its derivative for matrices from the unitary group U(N) (also known as the CUE) and relate the moment to the solution of a Painleve differential equation. We also calculate a simple form for the asymptotic behaviour of moments of logarithmic derivatives of these characteristic polynomials evaluated near the unit circle.

On the analysis of incomplete spectra in random matrix theory through an extension of the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno differential

Several distribution functions in the classical unitarily invariant matrix ensembles are prime examples of isomonodromic tau functions as introduced by Jimbo, Miwa and Ueno (JMU) in the early 1980s \cite{JMU}. Recent advances in the theory of tau functions \cite{ILP}, based on earlier works of B. Malgrange and M. Bertola, have allowed to extend the original Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno differential form to a 1-form closed on the full space of extended monodromy data of the underlying Lax pairs. This in turn has yielded a novel approach for the asymptotic evaluation of isomonodromic tau functions, including the exact computation of all relevant constant factors. We use this method to efficiently compute the tail asymptotics of soft-edge, hard-edge and bulk scaled distribution and gap functions in the complex Wishart ensemble, provided each eigenvalue particle has been removed independently with probability $1-γ\in(0,1]$.

Connection problem for the tau-function of the Sine-Gordon reduction of Painlevé-III equation via the Riemann-Hilbert approach

We evaluate explicitly, in terms of the Cauchy data, the constant pre-factor in the large $x$ asymptotics of the Painlevé III tau-function. Our result proves the conjectural formula for this pre-factor obtained recently by O. Lisovyy, Y. Tykhyy, and the first co-author with the help of the recently discovered connection of the Painlevé tau-functions with the Virasoro conformal blocks. Our approach does not use this connection, and it is based on the Riemann-Hilbert method.
