Semistable Non Abelian Hodge theorem in positive characteristic

In this paper, we show that for any reductive group $G$ the moduli space of semistable $G$-Higgs bundles on a curve in characteristic $p$ is a twisted form of the moduli space of semistable flat $G$-connections. This is the semistable version of a previous result of Chen-Zhu, and the $G$-bundle version of a previous result of de Cataldo-Groechenig-Zhang. As a consequence, we show that the Decomposition Theorem for the Hitchin morphism for $G$-Higgs bundles has the same shape as that for the de Rham-Hitchin morphism for flat $G$-connections.

Relative étale slices and cohomology of moduli spaces

We use techniques of Alper-Hall-Rydh to prove a local structure theorem for smooth morphisms between smooth stacks around points with linearly reductive stabilizers. This implies that the good moduli space of a smooth stack over a base has equisingular fibers. As an application, we show that any two fibers have isomorphic $\ell$-adic cohomology rings and intersection cohomology groups. If we work over the complex numbers, we show that the family is topologically locally trivial on the base, and that the intersection cohomology groups of the fibers fit into a polarizable variation of pure Hodge structures. We apply these results to derive some consequences for the moduli spaces of $G$-bundles on smooth projective curves, and for certain moduli spaces of sheaves on del Pezzo surfaces.

Stability and disconnected groups

We study the notion of semistability for principal bundles over curves with possibly disconnected reductive structure group. We establish a new characterization of the behavior of semistability under change of group, novel even in the connected case, and prove that all existing notions of semistability are equivalent, thus settling a question by Biswas-Gomez. The key ingredients for our results include a study of cocharacters and characters of disconnected linear algebraic groups, and an extension of the recursive description of Kirwan stratifications in Geometric Invariant Theory to the case of disconnected groups.

Moduli of elliptic surfaces of Kodaira dimension one fibered over rational curves

In this article, we construct an infinite sequence of irreducible components of Kollár--Shepherd-Barron (KSB-) moduli spaces of surfaces of arbitrarily large volumes, and describe the boundary of each component completely. Moreover, we describe the stable reduction steps in finding the KSB-limits in an explicit combinatorial way. Our main approach is to study the moduli spaces of elliptic surfaces with Kodaira dimension one, fibered over rational curves, using the techniques of wall-crossing for KSBA moduli and twisted stable maps.

Quantum operations on the ring of symmetric functions

We define a version of stable maps into the classifying stack $B\mathrm{GL}_N$, and develop a corresponding notion of $K$-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants. In this setting, the evaluation morphisms are not of finite type; the definition of the $K$-theoretic invariants proceeds by constructing a stability stratification of the moduli stack. In the absence of markings, the semistable locus of the stratification recovers moduli spaces of bundles on nodal curves considered by Gieseker, Nagaraj-Seshadri, Schmitt and Kausz. We also define versions of stable maps into quotient stacks of the form $Z/\mathrm{GL}_N$, where $Z$ is a projective $\mathrm{GL}_N$-scheme. We construct corresponding stability stratifications, whose semistable loci provide new proper moduli spaces of gauged maps from a varying nodal curve into $Z/\mathrm{GL}_N$.

Moduli of non-pure sheaves and contractions of Hilbert schemes

We define certain stacks of rank one sheaves on a smooth projective variety, and show that they admit proper good moduli spaces. We offer several applications to contractions of subschemes inside Hilbert schemes of points. We construct a surgery diagram via non-GIT wall-crossing, and use the interpretation of the surgery as a fine moduli of sheaves to prove instances Kawamata's DK-hypothesis in this setting.

Moduli of objects in finite length abelian categories

We construct moduli spaces of objects in an abelian category satisfying some finiteness hypotheses. Our approach is based on the work of Artin-Zhang and the intrinsic construction of moduli spaces for stacks developed by Alper-Halpern-Leistner-Heinloth.

Constructible Subcategories and Unbounded Representation Type (with an appendix by Andres Fernandez Herrero)

We show that bounded type implies finite type for a constructible subcategory of the module category of a finitely generated algebra over a field, which is a variant of the first Brauer-Thrall conjecture. A full subcategory is constructible if it consists of all modules that vanish on a finitely presented functor. Our approach makes use of the Ziegler spectrum of a ring and a connection, established in this work, with the scheme of finite dimensional modules. We also discuss a variant of the second Brauer-Thrall conjecture in this setting. It is shown to be true under additional assumptions on the algebra, but wrong in general. Lastly, it is proven that exact structures and matrix reductions give rise to constructible subcategories. Based on this, a translation from matrix reductions to reductions of exact structures is provided.

Projectivity of the moduli of equidimensional branchvarieties

We resolve an open problem posed by Alexeev-Knutson on the projectivity of the moduli of branchvarieties in the equidimensional case. As an application, we construct projective moduli spaces of reduced equidimensional varieties equipped with ample linear series and subject to a semistability condition.

There are no exotic compact moduli of sheaves on a curve

We study moduli of coherent sheaves of some given degree and positive rank on a curve. We show that there is only one nonempty open condition on families of sheaves that yields a universally closed adequate moduli space, namely, the one that recovers the classical moduli of slope semistable vector bundles.

Meromorphic Hodge moduli spaces for reductive groups in arbitrary characteristic

Fix a smooth projective family of curves $C \to S$ and a split reductive group scheme $G$ over a Noetherian base scheme $S$. For any (possibly nonreduced) fixed relative Cartier divisor $D$, we provide a treatment of the moduli of $G$-bundles on the fibers of $C$ equipped with $t$-connections with pole orders bounded by $D$. Under mild assumptions on the characteristics of all the residue fields of $S$, we construct a Hodge moduli space $M_{Hod, G} \to \mathbb{A}^1_S$ for the semistable locus, construct a Harder-Narasimhan stratification, and thus obtain a semistable reduction theorem. If all the fibers of the divisor of poles $D$ are nonempty, then we show that the stack of semistable objects is smooth over $\mathbb{A}^1_{S}$. We also define a Hodge-Hitchin morphism in positive characteristic and prove that it is proper.

Topology of $\mathbb{G}_m$-actions and applications to the moduli of Higgs bundles

We explain some results concerning the topology of varieties and stacks equipped with an action of the multiplicative group $\mathbb{G}_m$. We apply these techniques to the moduli of Higgs bundles. Our main application is to upgrade the cohomological Nonabelian Hodge Theorem in positive characteristic to an isomorphism of cohomology rings compatible with cup product.

Hitchin fibrations are Ngô fibrations

We study the geometry of the Hitchin fibration for $\mathcal{L}$-valued $G$-Higgs bundles over a smooth projective curve of genus $g$, where $G$ is a reductive group and $\mathcal{L}$ is a suitably positive line bundle. We show that the Hitchin fibration admits the structure of a weak Abelian fibration. In the case when the line bundle $\mathcal{L}$ is a twist of the canonical bundle of the curve by a (possibly empty) reduced effective divisor, we prove a cohomological bound and $δ$-regularity of the weak Abelian fibration.

The meromorphic Hitchin fibration over stable pointed curves: moduli spaces

We construct a universal partial compactification of the relative moduli space of semistable meromorphic Higgs bundles over the stack of stable pointed curves. It parametrizes meromorphic Gieseker Higgs bundles, and is equipped with a flat and proper extension of the usual Hitchin morphism. Over an open subset of the Hitchin base parametrizing allowable nodal spectral covers, we describe the relation of the fibers to compactified Jacobians, thus establishing an analogue of the BNR correspondence. We also construct a version of the moduli space where we require the residues of the meromorphic Higgs bundle to lie in a given set of nilpotent conjugacy classes. In this latter case, we show that there is a flat and proper Hitchin morphism to the flat degeneration of the corresponding family of Hitchin bases constructed in previous physics work.

Distinguishing Algebraic Spaces from Schemes

We introduce local invariants of algebraic spaces and stacks which measure how far they are from being a scheme. Using these invariants, we develop mostly topological criteria to determine when the moduli space of a stack is a scheme. As an application we study moduli of principal bundles on a smooth projective curve.

The moduli stack of principal $ρ$-sheaves and Gieseker-Harder-Narasimhan filtrations

Let X be a smooth projective variety and let G be a connected reductive group, both defined over a field of characteristic 0. Given a faithful representation $ρ$ of G into a product of general linear groups, we define a moduli stack of principal $ρ$-sheaves that compactifies the stack of G-bundles on X. We apply the theory developed by Alper, Halpern-Leistner and Heinloth to construct a moduli space of Gieseker semistable principal $ρ$-sheaves. This provides an intrinsic stack-theoretic construction of the moduli space of semistable singular principal bundles as constructed by Schmitt and Gómez-Langer-Schmitt-Sols. Our second main result is the definition of a schematic Gieseker-Harder-Narasimhan filtration for $ρ$-sheaves, which induces a stratification of the stack by locally closed substacks. This filtration for a general reductive group G is a refinement of the canonical slope parabolic reductions previously considered at the level of points by Anchouche-Azad-Biswas and as a stratification of the stack by Gurjar-Nitsure. In an appendix, we apply the same techniques to define Gieseker-Harder-Narasimhan filtrations in arbitrary characteristic and show that they induce a stratification of the stack by radicial morphisms.

Moduli spaces of sheaves via affine Grassmannians

We develop a new method for analyzing moduli problems related to the stack of pure coherent sheaves on a polarized family of projective schemes. It is an infinite-dimensional analogue of geometric invariant theory. We apply this to two familiar moduli problems: the stack of $Λ$-modules and the stack of pairs. In both examples, we construct a $Θ$-stratification of the stack, defined in terms of a polynomial numerical invariant, and we construct good moduli spaces for the open substacks of semistable points. One of the essential ingredients is the construction of higher dimensional analogues of the affine Grassmannian for the moduli problems considered.

Geometry of the logarithmic Hodge moduli space (with an Appendix joint with Siqing Zhang)

We show the smoothness over the affine line of the Hodge moduli space of logarithmic t-connections of coprime rank and degree on a smooth projective curve with geometrically integral fibers over an arbitrary Noetherian base. When the base is a field, we also prove that the Hodge moduli space is geometrically integral. Along the way, we prove the same results for the corresponding moduli spaces of logarithmic Higgs bundles and of logarithmic connections. We use smoothness to derive specialization isomorphisms on the etale cohomology rings of these moduli spaces; this includes the special case when the base is of mixed characteristic. In the special case where the base is a separably closed field of positive characteristic, we show that these isomorphisms are filtered isomorphisms for the perverse filtrations associated with the corresponding Hitchin-type morphisms.
