The circular Delannoy category

Let $G$ (resp. $H$) be the group of orientation preserving self-homeomorphisms of the unit circle (resp. real line). In previous work, the first two authors constructed pre-Tannakian categories $\underline{\mathrm{Rep}}(G)$ and $\underline{\mathrm{Rep}}(H)$ associated to these groups. In the predecessor to this paper, we analyzed the category $\underline{\mathrm{Rep}}(H)$ (which we named the ``Delannoy category'') in great detail, and found it to have many special properties. In this paper, we study $\underline{\mathrm{Rep}}(G)$. The primary difference between these two categories is that $\underline{\mathrm{Rep}}(H)$ is semi-simple, while $\underline{\mathrm{Rep}}(G)$ is not; this introduces new complications in the present case. We find that $\underline{\mathrm{Rep}}(G)$ is closely related to the combinatorics of objects we call Delannoy loops, which seem to have not previously been studied.

Measures for the colored circle

In recent work with Harman, we introduced a new notion of measure for oligomorphic groups, and showed how they can be used to produce interesting tensor categories. Determining the measures for an oligomorphic group is (in our view) an important and difficult combinatorial problem, which has only been solved in a handful of cases. The purpose of this paper is to solve this problem for a certain infinite family of oligomorphic groups, namely, the automorphism group of the $n$-colored circle (for each $n \ge 1$).

The Delannoy category

Let $G$ be the group of all order-preserving self-maps of the real line. In previous work, the first two authors constructed a pre-Tannakian category $\underline{\mathrm{Rep}}(G)$ associated to $G$. The present paper is a detailed study of this category, which we name the Delannoy category. We classify the simple objects, determine branching rules to open subgroups, and give a combinatorial rule for tensor products. The Delannoy category has some remarkable features: it is semi-simple in all characteristics; all simples have categorical dimension $\pm 1$; and the Adams operations on its Grothendieck group are trivial. We also give a combinatorial model for $\underline{\mathrm{Rep}}(G)$ based on Delannoy paths.

Isogeny classes of cubic spaces

A cubic space is a vector space equipped with a symmetric trilinear form. Two cubic spaces are isogeneous if each embeds into the other. A cubic space is non-degenerate if its form cannot be expressed as a finite sum of products of linear and quadratic forms. We classify non-degenerate cubic spaces of countable dimension up to isogeny: the isogeny classes are completely determined by an invariant we call the residual rank, which takes values in $\mathbf{N} \cup \{\infty\}$. In particular, the set of classes is discrete and (under the partial order of embedability) satisfies the descending chain condition.

The geometry of polynomial representations

We define a GL-variety to be a (typically infinite dimensional) algebraic variety equipped with an action of the infinite general linear group under which the coordinate ring forms a polynomial representation. Such varieties have been used to study asymptotic properties of invariants like strength and tensor rank, and played a key role in two recent proofs of Stillman's conjecture. We initiate a systematic study of GL-varieties, and establish a number of foundational results about them. For example, we prove a version of Chevalley's theorem on constructible sets in this setting.

Big polynomial rings and Stillman's conjecture

The purpose of this paper is to prove that certain limits of polynomial rings are themselves polynomial rings, and show how this observation can be used to deduce some interesting results in commutative algebra. In particular, we give two new proofs of Stillman's conjecture. The first is similar to that of Ananyan-Hochster, though more streamlined; in particular, it establishes the existence of small subalgebras. The second proof is completely different, and relies on a recent noetherianity result of Draisma.

The representation theory of Brauer categories II: curried algebra

A representation of $\mathfrak{gl}(V)=V \otimes V^*$ is a linear map $μ\colon \mathfrak{gl}(V) \otimes M \to M$ satisfying a certain identity. By currying, giving a linear map $μ$ is equivalent to giving a linear map $a \colon V \otimes M \to V \otimes M$, and one can translate the condition for $μ$ to be a representation to a condition on $a$. This alternate formulation does not use the dual of $V$, and makes sense for any object $V$ in a tensor category $\mathcal{C}$. We call such objects representations of the curried general linear algebra on $V$. The currying process can be carried out for many algebras built out of a vector space and its dual, and we examine several cases in detail. We show that many well-known combinatorial categories are equivalent to the curried forms of familiar Lie algebras in the tensor category of linear species; for example, the titular Brauer category "is" the curried form of the symplectic Lie algebra. This perspective puts these categories in a new light, has some technical applications, and suggests new directions to explore.

The representation theory of Brauer categories I: triangular categories

This is the first in a series of papers in which we study representations of the Brauer category and its allies. We define a general notion of triangular category that abstracts key properties of the triangular decomposition of a semisimple complex Lie algebra, and develop a highest weight theory for them. We show that the Brauer category, the partition category, and a number of related diagram categories admit this structure.

The Steinberg representation is irreducible

We prove that the Steinberg representation of a connected reductive group over an infinite field is irreducible. For finite fields, this is a classical theorem of Steinberg and Curtis.

Equivariant prime ideals for infinite dimensional supergroups

Let $A$ be a commutative algebra equipped with an action of a group $G$. The so-called $G$-primes of $A$ are the equivariant analogs of prime ideals, and of central importance in equivariant commutative algebra. When $G$ is an infinite dimensional group, these ideals can be very subtle: for instance, distinct $G$-primes can have the same radical. In previous work, the second author showed that if $G$ is ${\bf GL}$ and $A$ is a polynomial representation, then these pathologies disappear when working with super vector spaces; this leads to a geometric description of $G$-primes of $A$. In the present paper, we construct an abstract framework around this result, and apply the framework to prove analogous results for other (super)groups. We give some applications to the isomeric determinantal ideals (more commonly known as "queer determinantal ideals").

Stable representation theory: beyond the classical groups

The orthogonal groups are a series of simple Lie groups associated to symmetric bilinear forms. There is no analogous series associated to symmetric trilinear forms. We introduce an infinite dimensional group-like object that can be viewed as the limit of this non-existent series, were it to exist. We show that the representation theory of this object is well-behaved, and similar to the stable representation theory of orthogonal groups. Our theory is not specific to symmetric trilinear forms, and applies to any kind of tensorial forms. Our results can be also be viewed from the perspective of semi-linear representations of the infinite general linear group, and are closely related to twisted commutative algebras.

Cohomology of flag supervarieties and resolutions of determinantal ideals

We study the coherent cohomology of generalized flag supervarieties. Our main observation is that these groups are closely related to the free resolutions of (certain generalizations of) determinantal ideals. In the case of super Grassmannians, we completely compute the cohomology of the structure sheaf: it is composed of the singular cohomology of a Grassmannian and the syzygies of a determinantal variety. The majority of the work involves studying the geometry of an analog of the Grothendieck-Springer resolution associated to the super Grassmannian; this takes place in the world of ordinary (non-super) algebraic geometry. Our work gives a conceptual explanation of the result of Pragacz-Weyman that the syzygies of determinantal ideals admit an action of the general linear supergroup. In a subsequent paper, we will treat other flag supervarieties in detail.

On the geometry and representation theory of isomeric matrices

The space of $n \times m$ complex matrices can be regarded as an algebraic variety on which the group ${\bf GL}_n \times {\bf GL}_m$ acts. There is a rich interaction between geometry and representation theory in this example. In an important paper, de Concini, Eisenbud, and Procesi classified the equivariant ideals in the coordinate ring. More recently, we proved a noetherian result for families of equivariant modules as $n$ and $m$ vary. In this paper, we establish analogs of these results for the space of $(n|n) \times (m|m)$ isomeric matrices with respect to the action of ${\bf Q}_n \times {\bf Q}_m$, where ${\bf Q}_n$ is the automorphism group of the isomeric structure (commonly known as the "queer supergroup"). Our work is motivated by connections to the Brauer category and the theory of twisted commutative algebras.

Symmetric ideals of the infinite polynomial ring

Let $R=\mathbf{C}[ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots]$ be the infinite variable polynomial ring, equipped with the natural action of the infinite symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}$. We classify the $\mathfrak{S}$-primes of $R$, determine the containments among these ideals, and describe the equivariant spectrum of $R$. We emphasize that $\mathfrak{S}$-prime ideals need not be radical, which is a primary source of difficulty. Our results yield a classification of $\mathfrak{S}$-ideals of $R$ up to copotency. Our work is motivated by the interest and applications of $\mathfrak{S}$-ideals seen in recent years.

Periodicity in the cohomology of finite general linear groups via q-divided powers

We show that $\bigoplus_{n \ge 0} {\mathrm H}^t({\bf GL}_n({\bf F}_q), {\bf F}_\ell)$ canonically admits the structure of a module over the $q$-divided power algebra (assuming $q$ is invertible in ${\bf F}_{\ell}$), and that, as such, it is free and (for $q \neq 2$) generated in degrees $\le t$. As a corollary, we show that the cohomology of a finitely generated ${\bf VI}$-module in non-describing characteristic is eventually periodic in $n$. We apply this to obtain a new result on the cohomology of unipotent Specht modules.

Sp-equivariant modules over polynomial rings in infinitely many variables

We study the category of Sp-equivariant modules over the infinite variable polynomial ring, where Sp denotes the infinite symplectic group. We establish a number of results about this category: for instance, we show that every finitely generated module M fits into an exact triangle $T \to M \to F \to$ where T is a finite length complex of torsion modules and F is a finite length complex of "free" modules; we determine the Grothendieck group; and we (partially) determine the structure of injective modules. We apply these results to show that the twisted commutative algebras ${\rm Sym}({\bf C}^{\infty} \oplus \bigwedge^2{\bf C}^{\infty})$ and ${\rm Sym}({\bf C}^{\infty} \oplus {\rm Sym}^2{\bf C}^{\infty})$ are noetherian, which are the strongest results to date of this kind. We also show that the free 2-step nilpotent twisted Lie algebra and Lie superalgebra are noetherian.

Big polynomial rings with imperfect coefficient fields

We previously showed that the inverse limit of standard-graded polynomial rings with perfect coefficient field is a polynomial ring, in an uncountable number of variables. In this paper, we show that the same result holds with arbitrary coefficient field. We also prove an analogous result for ultraproducts of polynomial rings.
