Architectural and System Implications of CXL-enabled Tiered Memory

Memory disaggregation is an emerging technology that decouples memory from traditional memory buses, enabling independent scaling of compute and memory. Compute Express Link (CXL), an open-standard interconnect technology, facilitates memory disaggregation by allowing processors to access remote memory through the PCIe bus while preserving the shared-memory programming model. This innovation creates a tiered memory architecture combining local DDR and remote CXL memory with distinct performance characteristics. In this paper, we investigate the architectural implications of CXL memory, focusing on its increased latency and performance heterogeneity, which can undermine the efficiency of existing processor designs optimized for (relatively) uniform memory latency. Using carefully designed micro-benchmarks, we identify bottlenecks such as limited hardware-level parallelism in CXL memory, unfair queuing in memory request handling, and its impact on DDR memory performance and inter-core synchronization. Our findings reveal that the disparity in memory tier parallelism can reduce DDR memory bandwidth by up to 81% under heavy loads. To address these challenges, we propose a Dynamic Memory Request Control mechanism, MIKU, that prioritizes DDR memory requests while serving CXL memory requests on a best-effort basis. By dynamically adjusting CXL request rates based on service time estimates, MIKU achieves near-peak DDR throughput while maintaining high performance for CXL memory. Our evaluation with micro-benchmarks and representative workloads demonstrates the potential of MIKU to enhance tiered memory system efficiency.

On the twofold Moutard transformation of the stationary Schrödinger equation with axial symmetry

The generalized Moutard transformation of the stationary axially symmetric Schrödinger equation is considered. It is shown that a superposition of two Moutard transformations can provide new potentials for the eigenvalue problem. Examples of two - dimensional potentials and exact solutions for the stationary axially symmetric Schrödinger equation are obtained as an application of the twofold Moutard transformation.

The nonlocal Darboux transformation for the stationary axially symmetric Schrödinger and Helmholtz equations is considered. Formulae for the nonlocal Darboux transformation are obtained and its relation to the generalized Moutard transformation is established. New examples of two - dimensional potencials and exact solutions for the stationary axially symmetric Schrödinger and Helmholtz equations are obtained as an application of the nonlocal Darboux transformation.

The nonlocal Darboux transformation of the stationary axially symmetric Schrödinger equation and generalized Moutard transformation

The nonlocal Darboux transformation of the stationary axially symmetric Schrödinger equation is considered. It is shown that a special case of the nonlocal Darboux transformation provides the generalization of the Moutard transformation. Formulae for the generalized Moutard transformation are obtained. New examples of two - dimensional potencials and exact solutions for the stationary axially symmetric Schrödinger equation are obtained as an application of the generalized Moutard transformation.

Studies on the energy and deep memory behaviour of a cache-oblivious, task-based hyperbolic PDE solver

We study the performance behaviour of a seismic simulation using the ExaHyPE engine with a specific focus on memory characteristics and energy needs. ExaHyPE combines dynamically adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) with ADER-DG. It is parallelized using tasks, and it is cache efficient. AMR plus ADER-DG yields a task graph which is highly dynamic in nature and comprises both arithmetically expensive tasks and tasks which challenge the memory's latency. The expensive tasks and thus the whole code benefit from AVX vectorization, though we suffer from memory access bursts. A frequency reduction of the chip improves the code's energy-to-solution. Yet, it does not mitigate burst effects. The bursts' latency penalty becomes worse once we add Intel Optane technology, increase the core count significantly, or make individual, computationally heavy tasks fall out of close caches. Thread overbooking to hide away these latency penalties contra-productive with non-inclusive caches as it destroys the cache and vectorization character. In cases where memory-intense and computationally expensive tasks overlap, ExaHyPE's cache-oblivious implementation can exploit deep, non-inclusive, heterogeneous memory effectively, as main memory misses arise infrequently and slow down only few cores. We thus propose that upcoming supercomputing simulation codes with dynamic, inhomogeneous task graphs are actively supported by thread runtimes in intermixing tasks of different compute character, and we propose that future hardware actively allows codes to downclock the cores running particular task types.

Evaluation of Intel Memory Drive Technology Performance for Scientific Applications

In this paper, we present benchmark data for Intel Memory Drive Technology (IMDT), which is a new generation of Software-defined Memory (SDM) based on Intel ScaleMP collaboration and using 3D XPointTM based Intel Solid-State Drives (SSDs) called Optane. We studied IMDT performance for synthetic benchmarks, scientific kernels, and applications. We chose these benchmarks to represent different patterns for computation and accessing data on disks and memory. To put performance of IMDT in comparison, we used two memory configurations: hybrid IMDT DDR4/Optane and DDR4 only systems. The performance was measured as a percentage of used memory and analyzed in detail. We found that for some applications DDR4/Optane hybrid configuration outperforms DDR4 setup by up to 20%.

The nonlocal Darboux transformation of the 2D stationary Schrödinger equation and its relation to the Moutard transformation

The nonlocal Darboux transformation of the two - dimensional stationary Schrödinger equation is considered and its relation to the Moutard transformation is established. It is shown that a special case of the nonlocal Darboux transformation provides the Moutard transformation. New examples of solvable two - dimensional stationary Schrödinger operators with smooth potentials are obtained as an application of the nonlocal Darboux transformation.

Negative-U Centers as a Basis of Topological Edge Channels

We present the findings of the studies of the silicon sandwich nanostructure that represents the high mobility ultra - narrow silicon quantum well of the p - type (Si - QW), 2 nm, confined by the delta - barriers, 3 nm, heavily doped with boron on the n - type Si (100) surface. The ESR studies show that nanostructured delta - barriers confining the Si - QW consist predominantly of the dipole negative - U centers of boron, which are caused by the reconstruction of the shallow boron acceptors along the <111> crystallographic axis, 2B(0) = B(+) + B(-). The electrically ordered chains of dipole negative - U centers of boron in the delta -barriers appear to give rise to the topological edge states separated vertically, because the value of the longitudinal, Gxx = 4e2/h, and transversal, Gxy = e2/h, conductance measured at extremely low drain-source current indicates the exhibition of the Quantum Spin Hall effect. Besides, the Aharonov - Casher conductance oscillations and the 0.7(2e2/h) - feature obtained are evidence of the interplay of the spontaneous spin polarisation and the Rashba spin - orbit interaction that is attributable to the formation of the topological edge channels. We discuss the phenomenological model of the topological edge channel which can demonstrate the ballistic, Aharonov - Chasher effect or Josephson junction behaviour in dependence on the disorder in the distribution of the negative - U dipole centers in the upper and down delta - barriers.

Electrically-Detected ESR in Silicon Nanostructures Inserted in Microcavities

We present the first findings of the new electrically-detected electron spin resonance technique (EDESR), which reveal the point defects in the ultra-narrow silicon quantum wells (Si-QW) confined by the superconductor delta-barriers. This technique allows the ESR identification without application of an external cavity, as well as a high frequency source and recorder, and with measuring the only response of the magnetoresistance, with internal GHz Josephson emission within frameworks of the normal-mode coupling (NMC) caused by the microcavities embedded in the Si-QW plane.

The exactly solvable two-dimensional stationary Schrödinger operators obtaining by the nonlocal Darboux transformation

The Fokker-Planck equation associated with the two - dimensional stationary Schrödinger equation has the conservation low form that yields a pair of potential equations. The special form of Darboux transformation of the potential equations system is considered. As the potential variable is a nonlocal variable for the Schrödinger equation that provides the nonlocal Darboux transformation for the Schrödinger equation. This nonlocal transformation is applied for obtaining of the exactly solvable two - dimensional stationary Schrödinger equations. The examples of exactly solvable two - dimensional stationary Schrödinger operators with smooth potentials decaying at infinity are obtained.

Polarized electroluminescence from silicon nanostructures

We present the first findings of the circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) from silicon nanostructures which are the p-type ultra-narrow silicon quantum well (Si-QW) confined by δ-barriers heavily doped with boron. The CPEL dependences on the forward current and lateral electric field show the circularly polarized light emission which appears to be caused by the exciton recombination through the negative-U dipole boron centers at the Si-QW - δ-barriers interface with the assistance of phosphorus donors.
