Duality for graded Lie algebras

A well-known and old result of Hazewinkel and Koszul states that the cohomology of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra is isomorphic, up to a suitable shift, to its twisted homology, a Lie-theoretical version of Poincare duality. This paper establishes an analogue of this result for graded (or super) Lie algebras and, more generally, differential graded Lie algebras. Closely related to this result is a calculation of the cohomology of a graded Lie algebra g with coefficients in its universal enveloping algebra U(g) as a one-sided module. This cohomology turns out to be one-dimensional and serves as a dualizing module for the cohomology of g. Moreover, it is shown that for a unimodular graded Lie algebra g, the derived category of U(g) has a Calabi-Yau structure. As a consequence, the category of rational infinity local systems on a simply connected topological space with totally finite-dimensional rational homotopy groups, has a Calabi-Yau structure, a generalization of Poincare duality for elliptic spaces.

Homotopy theory of post-Lie algebras

In this paper, we study the homotopy theory of post-Lie algebras. Guided by Koszul duality theory, we consider the graded Lie algebra of coderivations of the cofree conilpotent graded cocommutative cotrialgebra generated by $V$. We show that in the case of $V$ being a shift of an ungraded vector space $W$, Maurer-Cartan elements of this graded Lie algebra are exactly post-Lie algebra structures on $W$. The cohomology of a post-Lie algebra is then defined using Maurer-Cartan twisting. The second cohomology group of a post-Lie algebra has a familiar interpretation as equivalence classes of infinitesimal deformations. Next we define a post-Lie$_\infty$ algebra structure on a graded vector space to be a Maurer-Cartan element of the aforementioned graded Lie algebra. Post-Lie$_\infty$ algebras admit a useful characterization in terms of $L_\infty$-actions (or open-closed homotopy Lie algebras). Finally, we introduce the notion of homotopy Rota-Baxter operators on open-closed homotopy Lie algebras and show that certain homotopy Rota-Baxter operators induce post-Lie$_\infty$ algebras.

Nonsmooth Calabi-Yau structures for algebras and coalgebras

We show that generalised Calabi-Yau dg (co)algebras are Koszul dual to generalised symmetric dg (co)algebras, without needing to assume any smoothness or properness hypotheses. Similarly, we show that Gorenstein and Frobenius are Koszul dual properties. As an application, we give a new characterisation of Poincar\'e duality spaces, which extends a theorem of F\'elix- Halperin-Thomas to the non-simply connected setting.

Cohomology of Lie coalgebras

A Koszul duality-type correspondence between coderived categories of conilpotent differential graded Lie coalgebras and their Chevalley-Eilenberg differential graded algebras is established. This gives an interpretation of Lie coalgebra cohomology as a certain kind of derived functor. A similar correspondence is proved for coderived categories of commutative cofibrant differential graded algebras and their Harrison differential graded Lie coalgebras.

Categorical Koszul duality

In this paper we establish Koszul duality between dg categories and a class of curved coalgebras, generalizing the corresponding result for dg algebras and conilpotent curved coalgebras. We show that the normalized chain complex functor transforms the Quillen equivalence between quasicategories and simplicial categories into this Koszul duality. This allows us to give a conceptual interpretation of the dg nerve of a dg category and its adjoint. As an application, we prove that the category of representations of a quasicategory is equivalent to the coderived category of comodules over its chain coalgebra. A corollary of this is a characterization of the category of constructible dg sheaves on a stratified space as the coderived category of a certain dg coalgebra.

Hochschild cohomology of the second kind: Koszul duality and Morita invariance

We define Hochschild cohomology of the second kind for differential graded (dg) or curved algebras as a derived functor in the twisted derived category, and show that it is invariant under suitable Morita equivalences of the second kind. A bimodule version of Koszul duality is constructed and used to show that Hochschild cohomology of the second kind is preserved under (nonconilpotent) Koszul duality. We show that Hochschild cohomology of the second kind of an algebra often computes the ordinary Hochschild cohomology of geometrically meaningful dg categories. Examples include the category of infinity local systems on a topological space, the bounded derived category of a complex algebraic manifold and the category of matrix factorizations.

One-sided localization in dg categories

The notion of one-sided localization in the homotopy invariant context is developed for dg algebras and dg categories. Applications include a simple construction of derived localization of dg algebras and dg categories, and a refinement of Drinfeld's quotient of pretriangulated dg categories.

Global Koszul duality

We construct a monoidal model structure on the category of all curved coalgebras and show that it is Quillen equivalent, via the extended bar-cobar adjunction, to another model structure we construct on the category of curved algebras. When the coalgebras under consideration are conilpotent and the algebras are dg, i.e. uncurved, this corresponds to the ordinary dg Koszul duality of Positselski and Keller-Lef\`evre. As an application we construct global noncommutative moduli spaces for flat connections on vector bundles, holomorphic structures on almost complex vector bundles, dg modules over a dg algebra, objects in a dg category, and others.

Enriched Koszul duality for dg categories

It is well-known that the category of small dg categories dgCat, though it is monoidal, does not form a monoidal model category. In this paper we construct a monoidal model structure on the category of pointed curved coalgebras ptdCoa* and show that the Quillen equivalence relating it to dgCat is monoidal. We also show that dgCat is a ptdCoa*-enriched model category. As a consequence, the homotopy category of dgCat is closed monoidal and is equivalent as a closed monoidal category to the homotopy category of ptdCoa*. In particular, this gives a conceptual construction of a derived internal hom in dgCat. As an application we obtain a new description of simplicial mapping spaces in dgCat and a calculation of their homotopy groups in terms of Hochschild cohomology groups, reproducing and slightly generalizing well-known results of Toën. Comparing our approach to Toën's, we also obtain a description of the core of Lurie's dg nerve in terms of the ordinary nerve of a discrete category.

Koszul duality for compactly generated derived categories of second kind

For any dg algebra $A$ we construct a closed model category structure on dg $A$-modules such that the corresponding homotopy category is compactly generated by dg $A$-modules that are finitely generated and free over $A$ (disregarding the differential). We prove that this closed model category is Quillen equivalent to the category of comodules over a certain, possibly nonconilpotent dg coalgebra, a so-called extended bar construction of $A$. This generalises and complements certain aspects of dg Koszul duality for associative algebras.

Rank functions on triangulated categories

We introduce the notion of a rank function on a triangulated category $\mathcal{C}$ which generalizes the Sylvester rank function in the case when $\mathcal{C}=\operatorname{Perf}(A)$ is the perfect derived category of a ring $A$. We show that rank functions are closely related to functors into simple triangulated categories and classify Verdier quotients into simple triangulated categories in terms of particular rank functions called localizing. If $\mathcal{C}=\operatorname{Perf}(A)$ as above, localizing rank functions also classify finite homological epimorphisms from $A$ into differential graded skew-fields or, more generally, differential graded Artining rings. To establish these results, we develop the theory of derived localization of differential graded algebras at thick subcategories of their perfect derived categories. This is a far-reaching generalization of Cohn's matrix localization of rings and has independent interest.

Maurer-Cartan moduli and theorems of Riemann-Hilbert type

We study Maurer-Cartan moduli spaces of dg algebras and associated dg categories and show that, while not quasi-isomorphism invariants, they are invariants of strong homotopy type, a natural notion that has not been studied before. We prove, in several different contexts, Schlessinger-Stasheff type theorems comparing the notions of homotopy and gauge equivalence for Maurer-Cartan elements as well as their categorified versions. As an application, we re-prove and generalize Block-Smith's higher Riemann-Hilbert correspondence, and develop its analogue for simplicial complexes and topological spaces.

Homotopy theory of monoids and derived localization

We use derived localization of the bar and nerve constructions to provide simple proofs of a number of results in algebraic topology. This includes a recent generalization of Adams' cobar-construction to the non-simply connected case, and a new model for the homotopy theory of connected topological spaces using an infinity category of discrete monoids.

Homological epimorphisms and homotopy epimorphisms

We show that the notions of homotopy epimorphism and homological epimorphism in the category of differential graded algebras are equivalent. As an application we obtain a characterization of acyclic maps of topological spaces in terms of induced maps of their chain algebras of based loop spaces. In the case of a universal acyclic map we obtain, for a wide class of spaces, an explicit algebraic description for these induced maps in terms of derived localization.

Deformations and homotopy theory of relative Rota-Baxter Lie algebras

We determine the \emph{$L_\infty$-algebra} that controls deformations of a relative Rota-Baxter Lie algebra and show that it is an extension of the dg Lie algebra controlling deformations of the underlying LieRep pair by the dg Lie algebra controlling deformations of the relative Rota-Baxter operator. Consequently, we define the {\em cohomology} of relative Rota-Baxter Lie algebras and relate it to their infinitesimal deformations. A large class of relative Rota-Baxter Lie algebras is obtained from triangular Lie bialgebras and we construct a map between the corresponding deformation complexes. Next, the notion of a \emph{homotopy} relative Rota-Baxter Lie algebra is introduced. We show that a class of homotopy relative Rota-Baxter Lie algebras is intimately related to \emph{pre-Lie$_\infty$-algebras}.

Review of deformation theory I: Concrete formulas for deformations of algebraic structures

In this review article, first we give the concrete formulas of representations and cohomologies of associative algebras, Lie algebras, pre-Lie algebras, Leibniz algebras and 3-Lie algebras and some of their strong homotopy analogues. Then we recall the graded Lie algebras and graded associative algebras that characterize these algebraic structures as Maurer-Cartan elements. The corresponding Maurer-Cartan element equips the graded Lie or associative algebra with a differential. Then the deformations of the given algebraic structures are characterized as the Maurer-Cartan elements of the resulting differential graded Lie or associative algebras. We also recall the relation between the cohomologies and the differential graded Lie and associative algebras that control the deformations.
