Review of deformation theory II: a homotopical approach

We give a general treatment of deformation theory from the point of view of homotopical algebra following Hinich, Manetti and Pridham. In particular, we show that any deformation functor in characteristic zero is controlled by a certain differential graded Lie algebra defined up to homotopy, and also formulate a noncommutative analogue of this result valid in any characteristic.

On the perturbation algebra

We introduce a certain differential graded bialgebra, neither commutative nor cocommutative, that governs perturbations of a differential on complexes supplied with an abstract Hodge decomposition. This leads to a conceptual treatment of the Homological Perturbation Lemma and its multiplicative version. As an application we give an explicit form of the decomposition theorem for $A_\infty$ algebras and $A_\infty$ modules and, more generally, for twisted objects in differential graded categories.

Derived localisation of algebras and modules

For any dg algebra $A$, not necessarily commutative, and a subset $S$ in $H(A)$, the homology of $A$, we construct its derived localisation $L_S(A)$ together with a map $A\to L_S(A)$, well-defined in the homotopy category of dg algebras, which possesses a universal property, similar to that of the ordinary localisation, but formulated in homotopy invariant terms. Even if $A$ is an ordinary ring, $L_S(A)$ may have non-trivial homology. Unlike the commutative case, the localisation functor does not commute, in general, with homology but instead there is a spectral sequence relating $H(L_S(A))$ and $L_S(H(A))$; this spectral sequence collapses when, e.g. $S$ is an Ore set or when $A$ is a free ring. We prove that $L_S(A)$ could also be regarded as a Bousfield localisation of $A$ viewed as a left or right dg module over itself. Combined with the results of Dwyer-Kan on simplicial localisation, this leads to a simple and conceptual proof of the topological group completion theorem. Further applications include algebraic $K$-theory, cyclic and Hochschild homology, strictification of homotopy unital algebras, idempotent ideals, the stable homology of various mapping class groups and Kontsevich's graph homology.

Unimodular homotopy algebras and Chern-Simons theory

Quantum Chern-Simons invariants of differentiable manifolds are analyzed from the point of view of homological algebra. Given a manifold M and a Lie (or, more generally, an L-infinity) algebra g, the vector space H^*(M) \otimes g has the structure of an L-infinity algebra whose homotopy type is a homotopy invariant of M. We formulate necessary and sufficient conditions for this L-infinity algebra to have a quantum lift. We also obtain structural results on unimodular L-infinity algebras and introduce a doubling construction which links unimodular and cyclic L-infinity algebras.

Koszul-Morita duality

We construct a generalization of Koszul duality in the sense of Keller--Lefèvre for not necessarily augmented algebras. This duality is closely related to classical Morita duality and specializes to it in certain cases.

Disconnected rational homotopy theory

We construct two algebraic versions of homotopy theory of rational disconnected topological spaces, one based on differential graded commutative associative algebras and the other one on complete differential graded Lie algebras. As an application of the developed technology we obtain results on the structure of Maurer-Cartan spaces of complete differential graded Lie algebras.

Models for classifying spaces and derived deformation theory

Using the theory of extensions of L-infinity algebras, we construct rational homotopy models for classifying spaces of fibrations, giving answers in terms of classical homological functors, namely the Chevalley-Eilenberg and Harrison cohomology. We also investigate the algebraic structure of the Chevalley-Eilenberg complexes of L-infinity algebras and show that they possess, along with the Gerstenhaber bracket, an L-infinity structure that is homotopy abelian.

Homotopy BV algebras in Poisson geometry

We define and study the degeneration property for BV-infinity algebras and show that it implies that the underlying L-infinity algebras are homotopy abelian. The proof is based on a generalisation of the well-known identity Δ(e^x)=e^x(Δ(x)+[x,x]/2) which holds in all BV algebras. As an application we show that the higher Koszul brackets on the cohomology of a manifold supplied with a generalised Poisson structure all vanish.

Maurer-Cartan moduli and models for function spaces

We set up a formalism of Maurer-Cartan moduli sets for L-infinity algebras and associated twistings based on the closed model category structure on formal differential graded algebras (a.k.a. differential graded coalgebras). Among other things this formalism allows us to give a compact and manifestly homotopy invariant treatment of Chevalley-Eilenberg and Harrison cohomology. We apply the developed technology to construct rational homotopy models for function spaces.

L-infinity maps and twistings

We give a construction of an L-infinity map from any L-infinity algebra into its truncated Chevalley-Eilenberg complex as well as its cyclic and A-infinity analogues. This map fits with the inclusion into the full Chevalley-Eilenberg complex (or its respective analogues) to form a homotopy fiber sequence of L-infinity-algebras. Application to deformation theory and graph homology are given. We employ the machinery of Maurer-Cartan functors in L-infinity and A-infinity algebras and associated twistings which should be of independent interest.

Combinatorics and formal geometry of the master equation

We give a general treatment of the master equation in homotopy algebras and describe the operads and formal differential geometric objects governing the corresponding algebraic structures. We show that the notion of Maurer-Cartan twisting is encoded in certain automorphisms of these universal objects.

Curved infinity-algebras and their characteristic classes

In this paper we study a natural extension of Kontsevich's characteristic class construction for A-infinity and L-infinity algebras to the case of curved algebras. These define homology classes on a variant of his graph homology which allows vertices of valence >0. We compute this graph homology, which is governed by star-shaped graphs with odd-valence vertices. We also classify nontrivially curved cyclic A-infinity and L-infinity algebras over a field up to gauge equivalence, and show that these are essentially reduced to algebras of dimension at most two with only even-ary operations. We apply the reasoning to compute stability maps for the homology of Lie algebras of formal vector fields. Finally, we explain a generalization of these results to other types of algebras, using the language of operads.

Feynman diagrams and minimal models for operadic algebras

We construct an explicit minimal model for an algebra over the cobar-construction of a differential graded operad. The structure maps of this minimal model are expressed in terms of sums over decorated trees. We introduce the appropriate notion of a homotopy equivalence of operadic algebras and show that our minimal model is homotopy equivalent to the original algebra. All this generalizes and gives a conceptual explanation of well-known results for A-infinity algebras. Further, we show that these results carry over to the case of algebras over modular operads; the sums over trees get replaced by sums over general Feynman graphs. As a by-product of our work we prove gauge-independence of Kontsevich's `dual construction' producing graph cohomology classes from contractible differential graded Frobenius algebras.

Characteristic classes of $\ai$-algebras

Standard combinatorial construction, due to Kontsevich, associates to any $\ai$-algebra with an invariant inner product, an inhomogeneous class in the cohomology of the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces with marked points. We propose an alternative version of this construction based on noncommutative geometry and use it to prove that homotopy equivalent algebras give rise to the same cohomology classes. Along the way we re-prove Kontsevich's theorem relating graph homology to the homology of certain infinite dimensional Lie algebras. An application to topological conformal field theories is given.

Symplectic $A_\infty$-algebras and string topology operations

In this paper we establish the existence of certain structures on the ordinary and equivariant homology of the free loop space on a manifold or, more generally, a formal Poincaré duality space. These structures; namely the loop product, the loop bracket and the string bracket, were introduced and studied by Chas and Sullivan under the general heading `string topology'. Our method is based on obstruction theory for $C_\infty$-algebras and rational homotopy theory. The resulting string topology operations are manifestly homotopy invariant.

Symplectic $C_\infty$-algebras

In this paper we show that a strongly homotopy commutative (or $C_\infty$-) algebra with an invariant inner product on its cohomology can be uniquely extended to a symplectic $C_\infty$-algebra (an $\infty$-generalisation of a commutative Frobenius algebra introduced by Kontsevich). This result relies on the algebraic Hodge decomposition of the cyclic Hochschild cohomology of a $\ci$-algebra and does not generalize to algebras over other operads.

Cohomology theories for homotopy algebras and noncommutative geometry

This paper builds a general framework in which to study cohomology theories of strongly homotopy algebras, namely $A_\infty, C_\infty$ and $L_\infty$-algebras. This framework is based on noncommutative geometry as expounded by Connes and Kontsevich. The developed machinery is then used to establish a general form of Hodge decomposition of Hochschild and cyclic cohomology of $C_\infty$-algebras. This generalizes and puts in a conceptual framework previous work by Loday and Gerstenhaber-Schack.

Dual Feynman transform for modular operads

We introduce and study the notion of a dual Feynman transform of a modular operad. This generalizes and gives a conceptual explanation of Kontsevich's dual construction producing graph cohomology classes from a contractible differential graded Frobenius algebra. The dual Feynman transform of a modular operad is indeed linear dual to the Feynman transform introduced by Getzler and Kapranov when evaluated on vacuum graphs. In marked contrast to the Feynman transform, the dual notion admits an extremely simple presentation via generators and relations; this leads to an explicit and easy description of its algebras. We discuss a further generalization of the dual Feynman transform whose algebras are not necessarily contractible. This naturally gives rise to a two-colored graph complex analogous to the Boardman-Vogt topological tree complex.
