Vacuum axisymmetric gravitational collapse revisited: preliminary investigation

Validating the results of [A.M. Abrahams and C.R. Evans, Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 2980] poses a numerical challenge and has been inspiring a lot of research. We join these efforts and present our first steps to achieve this goal: we discuss a formulation of Einstein equations for a vacuum axisymmetric spacetime with vanishing twist in spherical-polar coordinates, its linearised approximation, and identify some problems in achieving numerically stable evolution at the threshold of a black hole formation.

The problem of ultracompact rotating gravastars

A number of authors provided arguments that a rotating gravastar is a good candidate for a source of the Kerr metric. These arguments were based on the second order perturbation analysis. In the following paper, we construct a perturbative solution of the rotating gravastar up to the third perturbation order and show that it cannot be continuously matched with the Kerr spacetime.

Master equations and stability of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar black holes

We derive master equations for linear perturbations in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory, for any spacetime dimension D and any background with a maximally symmetric n = (D - 2)-dimensional spatial component. This is done by expressing all fluctuations analytically in terms of several master scalars. The resulting master equations are Klein-Gordon equations, with non-derivative couplings given by a potential matrix of size 3, 2 and 1 for the scalar, vector and tensor sectors respectively. Furthermore, these potential matrices turn out to be symmetric, and positivity of the eigenvalues is sufficient (though not necessary) for linear stability of the background under consideration. In general these equations cannot be fully decoupled, only in specific cases such as Reissner-Nordström, where we reproduce the Kodama-Ishibashi master equations. Finally we use this to prove stability in the vector sector of the GMGHS black hole and of Einstein-scalar theories in general.

AdS instability: resonant system for gravitational perturbations of AdS${}_5$ in the cohomogeneity-two biaxial Bianchi IX ansatz

We consider five-dimensional, vacuum Einstein equations with negative cosmological constant within cohomogenity-two biaxial Bianchi IX ansatz. This model allows to investigate the stability of AdS without adding any matter to the energy-momentum tensor, thus analyzing instability of genuine gravtational degrees of freedom. We derive the resonant system and identify vanishing secular terms. The results resemble those obtained for Einstein equations coupled to a spherically-symmetric, massless scalar field, backing the evidence that the scalar field model captures well the relevant features of AdS instability problem. We also list recurrence relations for the interaction coefficients of the resonant system, which might be useful in both numerical simulations and further analytical studies.

Cosmological perturbations in the Regge-Wheeler formalism

We study linear perturbations of the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmological model in the Regge-Wheeler formalism which is a standard framework to study perturbations of spherically-symmetric black holes. In particular, we show that the general solution of linear perturbation equations can be given in terms of two copies of a master scalar satisfying scalar wave equation on the FLRW background (with a Regge-Wheeler/Zerilli type potential) thus representing two gravitational degrees of freedom, and one scalar satisfying a transport type equation representing (conformal) matter perturbation. We expect the Regge-Wheeler formalism to be easily extended to include nonlinear perturbations, akin to to the recent work [Phys. Rev. D 96, 124026 (2017)].

Gravitational turbulent instability of AdS${}_5$

We consider the problem of stability of anti-de Sitter spacetime in five dimensions under small purely gravitational perturbations satisfying the cohomogeneity-two biaxial Bianchi IX ansatz. In analogy to spherically symmetric scalar perturbations, we observe numerically a black hole formation on the time-scale $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^{-2})$, where $\varepsilon$ is the size of the perturbation.

Towards a theory of nonlinear gravitational waves: a systematic approach to nonlinear gravitational perturbations in vacuum

We present a systematic and robust approach to nonlinear gravitational perturbations of vacuum spacetimes. This approach provides a basis for a theory of nonlinear gravitational waves. In particular, we show that the system of perturbative Einstein equations reduces at each perturbation order to two (for each gravitational mode in 3 + 1 dimensions on which our study is focused) scalar wave equations, and then we show how the metric perturbations can be explicitly obtained, once the solutions to these scalar wave equations are known. These results show that the concept of polarization of a gravitational wave does make sense also beyond the linear approximation.

Higher order perturbations of Anti-de Sitter space and time-periodic solutions of vacuum Einstein equations

Motivated by the problem of stability of Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime, we discuss nonlinear gravitational perturbations of maximally symmetric solutions of vacuum Einstein equations in general and the case of AdS in particular. We present the evidence that, similarly to the self-gravitating scalar field at spherical symmetry, the negative cosmological constant allows for the existence of globally regular, asymptotically AdS, time-periodic solutions of vacuum Einstein equations whose frequencies bifurcate from linear eigenfrequencies of AdS. Interestingly, our preliminary results indicate that the number of one parameter families of time-periodic solutions bifurcating from a given eigenfrequency equals the multiplicity of this eigenfrequency.

Resonant dynamics and the instability of anti-de Sitter spacetime

We consider spherically symmetric Einstein-massless-scalar field equations with negative cosmological constant in five dimensions and analyze evolution of small perturbations of anti-de Sitter spacetime using the recently proposed resonant approximation. We show that for typical initial data the solution of the resonant system develops an oscillatory singularity in finite time. This result hints at a possible route to establishing instability of AdS under arbitrarily small perturbations.

What drives AdS unstable?

We calculate the spectrum of linear perturbations of standing wave solutions discussed in [Phys. Rev. D 87, 123006 (2013)], as the first step to investigate the stability of globally regular, asymptotically AdS, time-periodic solutions discovered in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111 051102 (2013)]. We show that while this spectrum is only asymptotically nondispersive (as contrasted with the pure AdS case), putting a small standing wave solution on the top of AdS solution indeed prevents the turbulent instability. Thus we support the idea advocated in previous works that nondispersive character of the spectrum of linear perturbations of AdS space is crucial for the conjectured turbulent instability.

Lecture Notes on Turbulent Instability of Anti-de Sitter Spacetime

In these lecture notes we discuss recently conjectured instability of anti-de Sitter space, resulting in gravitational collapse of a large class of arbitrarily small initial perturbations. We uncover the technical details used in the numerical study of spherically symmetric Einstein-massless scalar field system with negative cosmological constant that led to the conjectured instability.

A comment on "Boson stars in AdS"

We comment on asymptotically AdS "large-$σ$" initial data, studied in Phys. Rev. D87, 123006 (2013) [arXiv:1304.4166], that are immune to turbulent instability.

Time-periodic solutions in Einstein AdS - massless scalar field system

We construct time-periodic solutions for a system of self-gravitating massless scalar field, with negative cosmological constant, in d+1 spacetime dimensions at spherical symmetry, both perturbatively and numerically. We estimate the convergence radius of the formally obtained perturbative series and argue that it is greater then zero. Moreover, this estimate coincides with the boundary of the convergence domain of our numerical method and the threshold for the black-hole formation. Then we confirm our results with a direct numerical evolution. This also gives strong evidence for nonlinear stability of the constructed time-periodic solutions.

On weakly turbulent instability of anti-de Sitter space

We study the nonlinear evolution of a weakly perturbed anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime by solving numerically the four-dimensional spherically symmetric Einstein-massless-scalar field equations with negative cosmological constant. Our results suggest that AdS spacetime is unstable under arbitrarily small generic perturbations. We conjecture that this instability is triggered by a resonant mode mixing which gives rise to diffusion of energy from low to high frequencies.

A comment on AdS collapse of a scalar field in higher dimensions

We point out that the weakly turbulent instability of anti-de Sitter space, recently found in arXiv:1104.3702 for four dimensional spherically symmetric Einstein-massless-scalar field equations with negative cosmological constant, is present in all dimensions $d+1$ for $d\geq 3$, contrary to a claim made in arXiv:1106.2339.

Saddle-point dynamics of a Yang-Mills field on the exterior Schwarzschild spacetime

We consider the Cauchy problem for a spherically symmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills field propagating outside the Schwarzschild black hole. Although solutions starting from smooth finite energy initial data remain smooth for all times, not all of them scatter since there are non-generic solutions which asymptotically tend to unstable static solutions. We show that a static solution with one unstable mode appears as an intermediate attractor in the evolution of initial data near a border between basins of attraction of two different vacuum states. We study the saddle-point dynamics near this attractor, in particular we identify the universal phases of evolution: the ringdown approach, the exponential departure, and the eventual decay to one of the vacuum states.
