(Super)integrability from coalgebra symmetry: formalism and applications

The coalgebra approach to the construction of classical integrable systems from Poisson coalgebras is reviewed, and the essential role played by symplectic realizations in this framework is emphasized. Many examples of Hamiltonians with either undeformed or q-deformed coalgebra symmetry are given, and their Liouville superintegrability is discussed. Among them, (quasi-maximally) superintegrable systems on N-dimensional curved spaces of nonconstant curvature are analysed in detail. Further generalizations of the coalgebra approach that make use of comodule and loop algebras are presented. The generalization of such a coalgebra symmetry framework to quantum mechanical systems is straightforward.

Maximal superintegrability of the generalized Kepler--Coulomb system on N-dimensional curved spaces

The superposition of the Kepler-Coulomb potential on the 3D Euclidean space with three centrifugal terms has recently been shown to be maximally superintegrable [Verrier P E and Evans N W 2008 J. Math. Phys. 49 022902] by finding an additional (hidden) integral of motion which is quartic in the momenta. In this paper we present the generalization of this result to the ND spherical, hyperbolic and Euclidean spaces by making use of a unified symmetry approach that makes use of the curvature parameter. The resulting Hamiltonian, formed by the (curved) Kepler-Coulomb potential together with N centrifugal terms, is shown to be endowed with (2N-1) functionally independent integrals of the motion: one of them is quartic and the remaining ones are quadratic. The transition from the proper Kepler-Coulomb potential, with its associated quadratic Laplace-Runge-Lenz N-vector, to the generalized system is fully described. The role of spherical, nonlinear (cubic), and coalgebra symmetries in all these systems is highlighted.

N-dimensional integrability from two-photon coalgebra symmetry

A wide class of Hamiltonian systems with N degrees of freedom and endowed with, at least, (N-2) functionally independent integrals of motion in involution is constructed by making use of the two-photon Lie-Poisson coalgebra. The set of (N-2) constants of the motion is shown to be a universal one for all these Hamiltonians, irrespectively of the dependence of the latter on several arbitrary functions and N free parameters. Within this large class of quasi-integrable N-dimensional Hamiltonians, new families of completely integrable systems are identified by finding explicitly a new independent integral through the analysis of the sub-coalgebra structure of the two-photon algebra. In particular, new completely integrable N-dimensional Hamiltonians describing natural systems, geodesic flows and static electromagnetic Hamiltonians are presented.

Comodule algebras and integrable systems

A method to construct both classical and quantum completely integrable systems from (Jordan-Lie) comodule algebras is introduced. Several integrable models based on a so(2,1) comodule algebra, two non-standard Schrodinger comodule algebras, the (classical and quantum) q-oscillator algebra and the Reflection Equation algebra are explicitly obtained.

Superintegrable potentials on 3D Riemannian and Lorentzian spaces with non-constant curvature

A quantum sl(2,R) coalgebra is shown to underly the construction of a large class of superintegrable potentials on 3D curved spaces, that include the non-constant curvature analogues of the spherical, hyperbolic and (anti-)de Sitter spaces. The connection and curvature tensors for these "deformed" spaces are fully studied by working on two different phase spaces. The former directly comes from a 3D symplectic realization of the deformed coalgebra, while the latter is obtained through a map leading to a spherical-type phase space. In this framework, the non-deformed limit is identified with the flat contraction leading to the Euclidean and Minkowskian spaces/potentials. The resulting Hamiltonians always admit, at least, three functionally independent constants of motion coming from the coalgebra structure. Furthermore, the intrinsic oscillator and Kepler potentials on such Riemannian and Lorentzian spaces of non-constant curvature are identified, and several examples of them are explicitly presented.

Superintegrability on N-dimensional curved spaces: Central potentials, centrifugal terms and monopoles

The N-dimensional Hamiltonian H formed by a curved kinetic term (depending on a function f), a central potential (depending on a function U), a Dirac monopole term, and N centrifugal terms is shown to be quasi-maximally superintegrable for any choice of the functions f and U. This result is proven by making use of the underlying sl(2,R)-coalgebra symmetry of H in order to obtain a set of (2N-3) functionally independent integrals of the motion, that are explicitly given. Such constants of the motion are "universal" since all of them are independent of both f and U. This Hamiltonian describes the motion of a particle on any ND spherically symmetric curved space (whose metric is specified by a function f) under the action of an arbitrary central potental U, and includes simultaneously a monopole-type contribution together with N centrifugal terms that break the spherical symmetry. Moreover, we show that two appropriate choices for U provide the "intrinsic" oscillator and the KC potentials on these curved manifolds. As a byproduct, the MIC-Kepler, the Taub-NUT and the so called multifold Kepler systems are shown to belong to this class of superintegrable Hamiltonians, and new generalizations thereof are obtained. The Kepler and oscillator potentials on N-dimensional generalizations of the four Darboux surfaces are discussed as well.

Bertrand spacetimes as Kepler/oscillator potentials

Perlick's classification of (3+1)-dimensional spherically symmetric and static spacetimes (\cal M,η=-1/V dt^2+g) for which the classical Bertrand theorem holds [Perlick V Class. Quantum Grav. 9 (1992) 1009] is revisited. For any Bertrand spacetime (\cal M,η) the term V(r) is proven to be either the intrinsic Kepler-Coulomb or the harmonic oscillator potential on its associated Riemannian 3-manifold (M,g). Among the latter 3-spaces (M,g) we explicitly identify the three classical Riemannian spaces of constant curvature, a generalization of a Darboux space and the Iwai-Katayama spaces generalizing the MIC-Kepler and Taub-NUT problems. The key dynamical role played by the Kepler and oscillator potentials in Euclidean space is thus extended to a wide class of 3-dimensional curved spaces.

Superintegrable anharmonic oscillators on N-dimensional curved spaces

The maximal superintegrability of the intrinsic harmonic oscillator potential on N-dimensional spaces with constant curvature is revisited from the point of view of sl(2)-Poisson coalgebra symmetry. It is shown how this algebraic approach leads to a straightforward definition of a new large family of quasi-maximally superintegrable perturbations of the intrinsic oscillator on such spaces. Moreover, the generalization of this construction to those N-dimensional spaces with non-constant curvature that are endowed with sl(2)-coalgebra symmetry is presented. As the first examples of the latter class of systems, both the oscillator potential on an N-dimensional Darboux space as well as several families of its quasi-maximally superintegrable anharmonic perturbations are explicitly constructed.

Effective su_q(2) models and polynomial algebras for fermion-boson Hamiltonians

Schematic su(2)+h3 interaction Hamiltonians, where su(2) plays the role of the pseudo-spin algebra of fermion operators and h3 is the Heisenberg algebra for bosons, are shown to be closely related to certain nonlinear models defined on a single quantum algebra q-su(2) of quasifermions. In particular, q-su(2) analogues of the Da Providencia-Schutte and extended Lipkin models are presented. The connection between q and the physical parameters of the fermion-boson system is analysed, and the integrability properties of the interaction Hamiltonians are discussed by using polynomial algebras.

Superintegrability on sl(2)-coalgebra spaces

We review a recently introduced set of N-dimensional quasi-maximally superintegrable Hamiltonian systems describing geodesic motions, that can be used to generate "dynamically" a large family of curved spaces. From an algebraic viewpoint, such spaces are obtained through kinetic energy Hamiltonians defined on either the sl(2) Poisson coalgebra or a quantum deformation of it. Certain potentials on these spaces and endowed with the same underlying coalgebra symmetry have been also introduced in such a way that the superintegrability properties of the full system are preserved. Several new N=2 examples of this construction are explicitly given, and specific Hamiltonians leading to spaces of non-constant curvature are emphasized.

Superintegrability on N-dimensional spaces of constant curvature from so(N+1) and its contractions

The Lie-Poisson algebra so(N+1) and some of its contractions are used to construct a family of superintegrable Hamiltonians on the ND spherical, Euclidean, hyperbolic, Minkowskian and (anti-)de Sitter spaces. We firstly present a Hamiltonian which is a superposition of an arbitrary central potential with N arbitrary centrifugal terms. Such a system is quasi-maximally superintegrable since this is endowed with 2N-3 functionally independent constants of the motion (plus the Hamiltonian). Secondly, we identify two maximally superintegrable Hamiltonians by choosing a specific central potential and finding at the same time the remaining integral. The former is the generalization of the Smorodinsky-Winternitz system to the above six spaces, while the latter is a generalization of the Kepler-Coulomb potential, for which the Laplace-Runge-Lenz N-vector is also given. All the systems and constants of the motion are explicitly expressed in a unified form in terms of ambient and polar coordinates as they are parametrized by two contraction parameters (curvature and signature of the metric).

N-dimensional sl(2)-coalgebra spaces with non-constant curvature

An infinite family of ND spaces endowed with sl(2)-coalgebra symmetry is introduced. For all these spaces the geodesic flow is superintegrable, and the explicit form of their common set of integrals is obtained from the underlying sl(2)-coalgebra structure. In particular, ND spherically symmetric spaces with Euclidean signature are shown to be sl(2)-coalgebra spaces. As a byproduct of this construction we present ND generalizations of the classical Darboux surfaces, thus obtaining remarkable superintegrable ND spaces with non-constant curvature.

Contractions, deformations and curvature

The role of curvature in relation with Lie algebra contractions of the pseudo-ortogonal algebras so(p,q) is fully described by considering some associated symmetrical homogeneous spaces of constant curvature within a Cayley-Klein framework. We show that a given Lie algebra contraction can be interpreted geometrically as the zero-curvature limit of some underlying homogeneous space with constant curvature. In particular, we study in detail the contraction process for the three classical Riemannian spaces (spherical, Euclidean, hyperbolic), three non-relativistic (Newtonian) spacetimes and three relativistic ((anti-)de Sitter and Minkowskian) spacetimes. Next, from a different perspective, we make use of quantum deformations of Lie algebras in order to construct a family of spaces of non-constant curvature that can be interpreted as deformations of the above nine spaces. In this framework, the quantum deformation parameter is identified as the parameter that controls the curvature of such "quantum" spaces.

Quantum Deformations and Superintegrable Motions on Spaces with Variable Curvature

An infinite family of quasi-maximally superintegrable Hamiltonians with a common set of (2N-3) integrals of the motion is introduced. The integrability properties of all these Hamiltonians are shown to be a consequence of a hidden non-standard quantum sl(2,R) Poisson coalgebra symmetry. As a concrete application, one of this Hamiltonians is shown to generate the geodesic motion on certain manifolds with a non-constant curvature that turns out to be a function of the deformation parameter z. Moreover, another Hamiltonian in this family is shown to generate geodesic motions on Riemannian and relativistic spaces all of whose sectional curvatures are constant and equal to the deformation parameter z. This approach can be generalized to arbitrary dimension by making use of coalgebra symmetry.

A maximally superintegrable system on an n-dimensional space of nonconstant curvature

A novel Hamiltonian system in n dimensions which admits the maximal number 2n-1 of functionally independent, quadratic first integrals is presented. This system turns out to be the first example of a maximally superintegrable Hamiltonian on an n-dimensional Riemannian space of nonconstant curvature, and it can be interpreted as the intrinsic Smorodinsky-Winternitz system on such a space. Moreover, we provide three different complete sets of integrals in involution and solve the equations of motion in closed form.

Universal integrals for superintegrable systems on N-dimensional spaces of constant curvature

An infinite family of classical superintegrable Hamiltonians defined on the N-dimensional spherical, Euclidean and hyperbolic spaces are shown to have a common set of (2N-3) functionally independent constants of the motion. Among them, two different subsets of N integrals in involution (including the Hamiltonian) can always be explicitly identified. As particular cases, we recover in a straightforward way most of the superintegrability properties of the Smorodinsky-Winternitz and generalized Kepler-Coulomb systems on spaces of constant curvature and we introduce as well new classes of (quasi-maximally) superintegrable potentials on these spaces. Results here presented are a consequence of the sl(2) Poisson coalgebra symmetry of all the Hamiltonians, together with an appropriate use of the phase spaces associated to Poincare and Beltrami coordinates.

The Kepler problem on 3D spaces of variable and constant curvature from quantum algebras

A quantum sl(2,R) coalgebra (with deformation parameter z) is shown to underly the construction of superintegrable Kepler potentials on 3D spaces of variable and constant curvature, that include the classical spherical, hyperbolic and (anti-)de Sitter spaces as well as their non-constant curvature analogues. In this context, the non-deformed limit z = 0 is identified with the flat contraction leading to the proper Euclidean and Minkowskian spaces/potentials. The corresponding Hamiltonians admit three constants of the motion coming from the coalgebra structure. Furthermore, maximal superintegrability of the Kepler potential on the spaces of constant curvature is explicitly shown by finding an additional constant of the motion coming from an additional symmetry that cannot be deduced from the quantum algebra. In this way, the Laplace-Runge-Lenz vector for such spaces is deduced and its algebraic properties are analysed.

Superintegrability on Three-Dimensional Riemannian and Relativistic Spaces of Constant Curvature

A family of classical superintegrable Hamiltonians, depending on an arbitrary radial function, which are defined on the 3D spherical, Euclidean and hyperbolic spaces as well as on the (2+1)D anti-de Sitter, Minkowskian and de Sitter spacetimes is constructed. Such systems admit three integrals of the motion (besides the Hamiltonian) which are explicitly given in terms of ambient and geodesic polar coordinates. The resulting expressions cover the six spaces in a unified way as these are parametrized by two contraction parameters that govern the curvature and the signature of the metric on each space. Next two maximally superintegrable Hamiltonians are identified within the initial superintegrable family by finding the remaining constant of the motion. The former potential is the superposition of a (curved) central harmonic oscillator with other three oscillators or centrifugal barriers (depending on each specific space), so that this generalizes the Smorodinsky-Winternitz system. The latter one is a superposition of the Kepler-Coulomb potential with another two oscillators or centrifugal barriers. As a byproduct, the Laplace-Runge-Lenz vector for these spaces is deduced. Furthermore both potentials are analysed in detail for each particular space. Some comments on their generalization to arbitrary dimension are also presented.
