Minimal Energy for Geometrically Nonlinear Elastic Inclusions in Two Dimensions

We are concerned with a variant of the isoperimetric problem, which in our setting arises in a geometrically nonlinear two-well problem in elasticity. More precisely, we investigate the optimal scaling of the energy of an elastic inclusion of a fixed volume for which the energy is determined by a surface and an (anisotropic) elastic contribution. Following ideas from \cite{CS} and \cite{KnuepferKohn-2011}, we derive the lower scaling bound by invoking a two-well rigidity argument and a covering result. The upper bound follows from a well-known construction for a lens-shaped elastic inclusion.

On Scaling Laws for Multi-Well Nucleation Problems without Gauge Invariances

In this article we study scaling laws for simplified multi-well nucleation problems without gauge invariances which are motivated by models for shape-memory alloys. Seeking to explore the role of the order of lamination on the energy scaling for nucleation processes, we provide scaling laws for various model problems in two and three dimensions. In particular, we discuss (optimal) scaling results in the volume and the singular perturbation parameter for settings in which the surrounding parent phase is in the first, the second and the third order lamination convex hull of the wells of the nucleating phase. Furthermore, we provide a corresponding result for the setting of an infinite order laminate which arises in the context of the Tartar square. In particular, our results provide isoperimetric estimates in situations in which strong nonlocal anisotropies are present.

On (Global) Unique Continuation Properties of the Fractional Discrete Laplacian

We study various qualitative and quantitative (global) unique continuation properties for the fractional discrete Laplacian. We show that while the fractional Laplacian enjoys striking rigidity properties in the form of (global) unique continuation properties, the fractional discrete Laplacian does not enjoy these in general. While discretization thus counteracts the strong rigidity properties of the continuum fractional Laplacian, by discussing quantitative forms of unique continuation, we illustrate that these properties can be recovered if exponentially small (in the lattice size) correction terms are added. This in particular allows us to deduce uniform stability properties for a discrete, linear inverse problem for the fractional Laplacian. We complement these observations with a transference principle and the discussion of these properties on the discrete torus.

On the Calderón problem for nonlocal Schrödinger equations with homogeneous, directionally antilocal principal symbols

In this article we consider direct and inverse problems for $α$-stable, elliptic nonlocal operators whose kernels are possibly only supported on cones and which satisfy the structural condition of \emph{directional antilocality} as introduced in \cite{I86}. We consider the Dirichlet problem for these operators on the "domain of dependence of the operator" and in several, adapted function spaces. This formulation allows one to avoid natural "gauges" which would else have to be considered in the study of the associated inverse problems. Exploiting the directional antilocality of these operators we complement the investigation of the \emph{direct problem} with infinite data and single measurement uniqueness results for the associated \emph{inverse problems}. Here, due to the only directional antilocality, new geometric conditions arise on the measurement domains. We discuss both the setting of symmetric and a particular class of non-symmetric nonlocal elliptic operators, and contrast the corresponding results for the direct and inverse problems. In particular for only "one-sided operators" new phenomena emerge both in the direct and inverse problems: For instance, it is possible to study the problem in data spaces involving local and nonlocal data, the unique continuation property may not hold in general and further restrictions on the measurement set for the inverse problem arise.

On the Energy Scaling Behaviour of a Singularly Perturbed Tartar Square

In this article we derive an (almost) optimal scaling law for a singular perturbation problem associated with the Tartar square. As in \cite{W97, C99}, our upper bound quantifies the well-known construction which is used in the literature to prove flexibility of the Tartar square in the sense of flexibility of approximate solutions to the differential inclusion. The main novelty of our article is the derivation of an (up to logarithmic powers matching) ansatz free lower bound which relies on a bootstrap argument in Fourier space and is related to a quantification of the interaction of a nonlinearity and a negative Sobolev space in the form of "a chain rule in a negative Sobolev space". Both the lower and the upper bound arguments give evidence of the involved "infinite order of lamination".

Discrete Carleman estimates and three balls inequalities

We prove logarithmic convexity estimates and three balls inequalities for discrete magnetic Schrödinger operators. These quantitatively connect the discrete setting in which the unique continuation property fails and the continuum setting in which the unique continuation property is known to hold under suitable regularity assumptions. As a key auxiliary result which might be of independent interest we present a Carleman estimate for these discrete operators.

Runge Approximation and Stability Improvement for a Partial Data Calderón Problem for the Acoustic Helmholtz Equation

In this article, we discuss quantitative Runge approximation properties for the acoustic Helmholtz equation and prove stability improvement results in the high frequency limit for an associated partial data inverse problem modelled on \cite{AU04, KU19}. The results rely on quantitative unique continuation estimates in suitable function spaces with explicit frequency dependence. We contrast the frequency dependence of interior Runge approximation results from non-convex and convex sets.

Higher Regularity for the Signorini Problem for the Homogeneous, Isotropic Lamé System

In this note we discuss the (higher) regularity properties of the Signorini problem for the homogeneous, isotropic Lamé system. Relying on an observation by Schumann \cite{Schumann1}, we reduce the question of the solution's and the free boundary regularity for the homogeneous, isotropic Lamé system to the corresponding regularity properties of the obstacle problem for the half-Laplacian.

On Single Measurement Stability for the Fractional Calderón Problem

In this short note we prove the logarithmic stability of the single measurement uniqueness result for the fractional Calderón problem which had been derived in \cite{GRSU18}. To this end, we use the quantitative uniqueness results established in \cite{RS20a} and complement these bounds with a boundary doubling estimate. The latter yields control of the order of vanishing of solutions to the fractional Schrödinger equation. Then, following a scheme introduced in \cite{S10,ASV13} in the context of the determination of a surface impedance from far field measurements, this allows us to deduce logarithmic stability of the potential $q$.

On a probabilistic model for martensitic avalanches incorporating mechanical compatibility

Building on the work in \cite{BCH15,CH18,TIVP17}, in this article we propose and study a simple, geometrically constrained, probabilistic algorithm geared towards capturing some aspects of the nucleation in shape-memory alloys. As a main novelty with respect to the algorithms in \cite{BCH15,CH18,TIVP17} we include \emph{mechanical compatibility}. The mechanical compatibility here is guaranteed by using \emph{convex integration building blocks} in the nucleation steps. We analytically investigate the algorithm's convergence and the solutions' regularity, viewing the latter as a measure for the fractality of the resulting microstructure. We complement our analysis with a numerical implemenation of the scheme and compare it to the numerical results in \cite{BCH15,CH18,TIVP17}.

On some partial data Calderón type problems with mixed boundary conditions

In this article we consider the simultaneous recovery of bulk and boundary potentials in (degenerate) elliptic equations modelling (degenerate) conducting media with inaccessible boundaries. This connects local and nonlocal Calderón type problems. We prove two main results on these type of problems: On the one hand, we derive simultaneous bulk and boundary Runge approximation results. Building on these, we deduce uniqueness for localized bulk and boundary potentials. On the other hand, we construct a family of CGO solutions associated with the corresponding equations. These allow us to deduce uniqueness results for arbitrary bounded, not necessarily localized bulk and boundary potentials. The CGO solutions are constructed by duality to a new Carleman estimate.

On Two Methods for Quantitative Unique Continuation Results for Some Nonlocal Operators

In this article we present two mechanisms for deducing logarithmic quantitative unique continuation bounds for certain classes of integral operators. In our first method, expanding the corresponding integral kernels, we exploit the logarithmic stability of the moment problem. In our second method we rely on the presence of branch-cut singularities for certain Fourier multipliers. As an application we present quantitative Runge approximation results for the operator $ L_s(D) = \sum\limits_{j=1}^{n}(-\partial_{x_j}^2)^{s} + q$ with $s\in [\frac{1}{2},1)$ and $q\in L^{\infty}$ acting on functions on $\mathbb{R}^n$.

On Runge approximation and Lipschitz stability for a finite-dimensional Schrödinger inverse problem

In this note we reprove the Lipschitz stability for the inverse problem for the Schrödinger operator with finite-dimensional potentials by using quantitative Runge approximation results. This provides a quantification of the Schrödinger version of the argument from Kohn and Vogelius in Comm. Pure Appl. Math. (1985) and presents a slight variant of the strategy considered by Alessandrini, de Hoop, Gaburro and Sincich in Asymptotic Analysis (2018) which may prove useful also in the context of more general operators.

Uniqueness and reconstruction for the fractional Calderón problem with a single measurement

We show global uniqueness in the fractional Calderón problem with a single measurement and with data on arbitrary, possibly disjoint subsets of the exterior. The previous work \cite{GhoshSaloUhlmann} considered the case of infinitely many measurements. The method is again based on the strong uniqueness properties for the fractional equation, this time combined with a unique continuation principle from sets of measure zero. We also give a constructive procedure for determining an unknown potential from a single exterior measurement, based on constructive versions of the unique continuation result that involve different regularization schemes.

Convex Integration Solutions for the Geometrically Non-linear Two-Well Problem with Higher Sobolev Regularity

In this article we discuss higher Sobolev regularity of convex integration solutions for the geometrically non-linear two-well problem. More precisely, we construct solutions to the differential inclusion $\nabla u\in K$ subject to suitable affine boundary conditions for $ u$ with $$ K:= SO(2)\left[\begin{array}{ ccc } 1 & δ\\ 0 & 1 \end{array}\right] \cup SO(2)\left[\begin{array}{ ccc } 1 & -δ\\ 0 & 1 \end{array}\right] $$ such that the associated deformation gradients $\nabla u$ enjoy higher Sobolev regularity. This provides the first result in the modelling of phase transformations in shape-memory alloys where $K^{qc} \neq K^{c}$, and where the energy minimisers constructed by convex integration satisfy higher Sobolev regularity. We show that in spite of additional difficulties arising from the treatment of the non-linear matrix space geometry, it is possible to deal with the geometrically non-linear two-well problem within the framework outlined in \cite{RZZ18}. Physically, our investigation of convex integration solutions at higher Sobolev regularity is motivated by viewing regularity as a possible selection mechanism of microstructures.

The Calderón problem for a space-time fractional parabolic equation

In this article we study an inverse problem for the space-time fractional parabolic operator $(\partial_t-Δ)^s+Q$ with $0<s<1$ in any space dimension. We uniquely determine the unknown bounded potential $Q$ from infinitely many exterior Dirichlet-to-Neumann type measurements. This relies on Runge approximation and the dual global weak unique continuation properties of the equation under consideration. In discussing weak unique continuation of our operator, a main feature of our argument relies on a Carleman estimate for the associated fractional parabolic Caffarelli-Silvestre extension. Furthermore, we also discuss constructive single measurement results based on the approximation and unique continuation properties of the equation.

The fractional Calderón problem: low regularity and stability

The Calderón problem for the fractional Schrödinger equation was introduced in the work \cite{GSU}, which gave a global uniqueness result also in the partial data case. This article improves this result in two ways. First, we prove a quantitative uniqueness result showing that this inverse problem enjoys logarithmic stability under suitable a priori bounds. Second, we show that the results are valid for potentials in scale-invariant $L^p$ or negative order Sobolev spaces. A key point is a quantitative approximation property for solutions of fractional equations, obtained by combining a careful propagation of smallness analysis for the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension and a duality argument.

Exact constructions in the (non-linear) planar theory of elasticity: From elastic crystals to nematic elastomers

In this article we deduce necessary and sufficient conditions for the presence of `Conti-type', highly symmetric, exactly-stress free constructions in the geometrically non-linear, planar $n$-well problem, generalising results of [CKZ17]. Passing to the limit $n\rightarrow \infty$, this allows us to treat solid crystals and nematic elastomer differential inclusions simultaneously. In particular, we recover and generalise (non-linear) planar tripole star type deformations which were experimentally observed in [MA80,MA80a,KK91]. Further we discuss the corresponding geometrically linearised problem.
