Strong unique continuation for the higher order fractional Laplacian

In this article we study the strong unique continuation property for solutions of higher order (variable coefficient) fractional Schrödinger operators. We deduce the strong unique continuation property in the presence of subcritical and critical Hardy type potentials. In the same setting, we address the unique continuation property from measurable sets of positive Lebesgue measure. As applications we prove the antilocality of the higher order fractional Laplacian and Runge type approximation theorems which have recently been exploited in the context of nonlocal Calderón type problems. As our main tools, we rely on the characterisation of the higher order fractional Laplacian through a generalised Caffarelli-Silvestre type extension problem and on adapted, iterated Carleman estimates.

The Calderón problem for the fractional Schrödinger equation with drift

We investigate the Calderón problem for the fractional Schrödinger equation with drift, proving that the unknown drift and potential in a bounded domain can be determined simultaneously and uniquely by an infinite number of exterior measurements. In particular, in contrast to its local analogue, this nonlocal problem does \emph{not} enjoy a gauge invariance. The uniqueness result is complemented by an associated logarithmic stability estimate under suitable apriori assumptions. Also uniqueness under finitely many \emph{generic} measurements is discussed. Here the genericity is obtained through \emph{singularity theory} which might also be interesting in the context of hybrid inverse problems. Combined with the results from \cite{GRSU18}, this yields a finite measurements constructive reconstruction algorithm for the fractional Calderón problem with drift. The inverse problem is formulated as a partial data type nonlocal problem and it is considered in any dimension $n\geq 1$.

On the Fractional Landis Conjecture

In this paper we study a Landis-type conjecture for fractional Schrödinger equations of fractional power $s\in(0,1)$ with potentials. We discuss both the cases of differentiable and non-differentiable potentials. On the one hand, it turns out for \emph{differentiable} potentials with some a priori bounds, if a solution decays at a rate $e^{-|x|^{1+}}$, then this solution is trivial. On the other hand, for $s\in(1/4,1)$ and merely bounded \emph{non-differentiable} potentials, if a solution decays at a rate $e^{-|x|^α}$ with $α>4s/(4s-1)$, then this solution must again be trivial. Remark that when $s\to 1$, $4s/(4s-1)\to 4/3$ which is the optimal exponent for the standard Laplacian. For the case of non-differential potentials and $s\in(1/4,1)$, we also derive a quantitative estimate mimicking the classical result by Bourgain and Kenig.

Lipschitz stability for the Finite Dimensional Fractional Calderón Problem with Finite Cauchy Data

In this note we discuss the conditional stability issue for the finite dimensional Calderón problem for the fractional Schrödinger equation with a finite number of measurements. More precisely, we assume that the unknown potential $q \in L^{\infty}(Ω) $ in the equation $((-Δ)^s+ q)u = 0 \mbox{ in } Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ satisfies the a priori assumption that it is contained in a finite dimensional subspace of $L^{\infty}(Ω)$. Under this condition we prove Lipschitz stability estimates for the fractional Calderón problem by means of finitely many Cauchy data depending on $q$. We allow for the possibility of zero being a Dirichlet eigenvalue of the associated fractional Schrödinger equation. Our result relies on the strong Runge approximation property of the fractional Schrödinger equation.

Convex Integration Arising in the Modelling of Shape-Memory Alloys: Some Remarks on Rigidity, Flexibility and Some Numerical Implementations

We study convex integration solutions in the context of the modelling of shape-memory alloys. The purpose of the article is two-fold, treating both rigidity and flexibility properties: Firstly, we relate the maximal regularity of convex integration solutions to the presence of lower bounds in variational models with surface energy. Hence, variational models with surface energy could be viewed as a selection mechanism allowing for or excluding convex integration solutions. Secondly, we present the first numerical implementations of convex integration schemes for the model problem of the geometrically linearised two-dimensional hexagonal-to-rhombic phase transformation. We discuss and compare the two algorithms from [RZZ16] and [RZZ17].

Unique Continuation for Sublinear Elliptic Equations Based on Carleman Estimates

In this article we deal with different forms of the unique continuation property for second order elliptic equations with nonlinear potentials of sublinear growth. Under suitable regularity assumptions, we prove the weak and the strong unique continuation property. Moreover, we also discuss the unique continuation property from measurable sets, which shows that nodal domains to these equations must have vanishing Lebesgue measure. Our methods rely on suitable Carleman estimates, for which we include the sublinear potential into the main part of the operator.

A Compactness and Structure Result for a Discrete Multi-Well Problem with $SO(n)$ Symmetry in Arbitrary Dimension

In this note we combine the "spin-argument" from [KLR15] and the $n$-dimensional incompatible, one-well rigidity result from [LL16], in order to infer a new proof for the compactness of discrete multi-well energies associated with the modelling of surface energies in certain phase transitions. Mathematically, a main novelty here is the reduction of the problem to an incompatible one-well problem. The presented argument is very robust and applies to a number of different physically interesting models, including for instance phase transformations in shape-memory materials but also anti-ferromagnetic transformations or related transitions with an "internal" microstructure on smaller scales.

Exponential instability in the fractional Calderón problem

In this note we prove the exponential instability of the fractional Calderón problem and thus prove the optimality of the logarithmic stability estimate from \cite{RS17}. In order to infer this result, we follow the strategy introduced by Mandache in \cite{M01} for the standard Calderón problem. Here we exploit a close relation between the fractional Calderón problem and the classical Poisson operator. Moreover, using the construction of a suitable orthonormal basis, we also prove (almost) optimality of the Runge approximation result for the fractional Laplacian, which was derived in \cite{RS17}. Finally, in one dimension, we show a close relation between the fractional Calderón problem and the truncated Hilbert transform.

Higher Sobolev Regularity of Convex Integration Solutions in Elasticity: The Dirichlet Problem with Affine Data in $\text{int}(K^{lc})$

In this article we continue our study of higher Sobolev regularity of flexible convex integration solutions to differential inclusions arising from applications in materials sciences. We present a general framework yielding higher Sobolev regularity for Dirichlet problems with affine data in $\text{int}(K^{lc})$. This allows us to simultaneously deal with linear and nonlinear differential inclusion problems. We show that the derived higher integrability and differentiability exponent has a lower bound, which is independent of the position of the Dirichlet boundary data in $\text{int}(K^{lc})$. As applications we discuss the regularity of weak isometric immersions in two and three dimensions as well as the differential inclusion problem for the geometrically linear hexagonal-to-rhombic and the cubic-to-orthorhombic phase transformations occurring in shape memory alloys.

Quantitative Approximation Properties for the Fractional Heat Equation

In this note we analyse \emph{quantitative} approximation properties of a certain class of \emph{nonlocal} equations: Viewing the fractional heat equation as a model problem, which involves both \emph{local} and \emph{nonlocal} pseudodifferential operators, we study quantitative approximation properties of solutions to it. First, relying on Runge type arguments, we give an alternative proof of certain \emph{qualitative} approximation results from \cite{DSV16}. Using propagation of smallness arguments, we then provide bounds on the \emph{cost} of approximate controllability and thus quantify the approximation properties of solutions to the fractional heat equation. Finally, we discuss generalizations of these results to a larger class of operators involving both local and nonlocal contributions.

Quantitative Runge Approximation and Inverse Problems

In this short note we provide a quantitative version of the classical Runge approximation property for second order elliptic operators. This relies on quantitative unique continuation results and duality arguments. We show that these estimates are essentially optimal. As a model application we provide a new proof of the result from \cite{F07}, \cite{AK12} on stability for the Calderón problem with local data.

Quantitative Invertibility and Approximation for the Truncated Hilbert and Riesz Transforms

In this article we derive quantitative uniqueness and approximation properties for (perturbations) of Riesz transforms. Seeking to provide robust arguments, we adopt a PDE point of view and realize our operators as harmonic extensions, which makes the problem accessible to PDE tools. In this context we then invoke quantitative propagation of smallness estimates in combination with qualitative Runge approximation results. These results can be viewed as quantifications of the approximation properties which have recently gained prominence in the context of nonlocal operators, c.f. [DSV14], [DSV16].

Optimal Regularity for the Thin Obstacle Problem with $C^{0,α}$ Coefficients

In this article we study solutions to the (interior) thin obstacle problem under low regularity assumptions on the coefficients, the obstacle and the underlying manifold. Combining the linearization method of Andersson \cite{An16} and the epiperimetric inequality from \cite{FS16}, \cite{GPSVG15}, we prove the optimal $C^{1,\min\{α,1/2\}}$ regularity of solutions in the presence of $C^{0,α}$ coefficients $a^{ij}$ and $C^{1,α}$ obstacles $ϕ$. Moreover we investigate the regularity of the regular free boundary and show that it has the structure of a $C^{1,γ}$ manifold for some $γ\in (0,1)$.

Higher Sobolev Regularity of Convex Integration Solutions in Elasticity

In this article we discuss quantitative properties of convex integration solutions arising in problems modeling shape-memory materials. For a two-dimensional, geometrically linearized model case, the hexagonal-to-rhombic phase transformation, we prove the existence of convex integration solutions $u$ with higher Sobolev regularity, i.e. there exists $θ_0>0$ such that $\nabla u \in W^{s,p}_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^2)\cap L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for $s\in(0,1)$, $p\in(1,\infty)$ with $0<sp < θ_0$. We also recall a construction, which shows that in situations with additional symmetry much better regularity properties hold.

Higher Regularity for the fractional thin obstacle problem

In this article we investigate the higher regularity properties of the regular free boundary in the fractional thin obstacle problem. Relying on a Hodograph-Legendre transform, we show that for smooth or analytic obstacles the regular free boundary is smooth or analytic, respectively. This leads to the analysis of a fully nonlinear, degenerate (sub)elliptic operator which we identify as a (fully nonlinear) perturbation of the fractional Baouendi-Grushin Laplacian. Using its intrinsic geometry and adapted function spaces, we invoke the analytic implicit function theorem to deduce analyticity of the regular free boundary.

The Variable Coefficient Thin Obstacle Problem: Higher Regularity

In this article we continue our investigation of the thin obstacle problem with variable coefficients which was initiated in \cite{KRS14}, \cite{KRSI}. Using a partial Hodograph-Legendre transform and the implicit function theorem, we prove higher order Hölder regularity for the regular free boundary, if the associated coefficients are of the corresponding regularity. For the zero obstacle this yields an improvement of a \emph{full derivative} for the free boundary regularity compared to the regularity of the metric. In the presence of non-zero obstacles or inhomogeneities, we gain \emph{three halves of a derivative} for the free boundary regularity with respect to the regularity of the inhomogeneity. Further we show analyticity of the regular free boundary for analytic metrics. We also discuss the low regularity set-up of $W^{1,p}$ metrics with $p>n+1$ with and without ($L^p$) inhomogeneities. Key new ingredients in our analysis are the introduction of generalized Hölder spaces, which allow to interpret the transformed fully nonlinear, degenerate (sub)elliptic equation as a perturbation of the Baouendi-Grushin operator, various uses of intrinsic geometries associated with appropriate operators, the application of the implicit function theorem to deduce (higher) regularity and the splitting technique from \cite{KRSI}.

The Variable Coefficient Thin Obstacle Problem: Optimal Regularity and Regularity of the Regular Free Boundary

This article deals with the variable coefficient thin obstacle problem in $n+1$ dimensions. We address the regular free boundary regularity, the behavior of the solution close to the free boundary and the optimal regularity of the solution in a low regularity set-up. We first discuss the case of zero obstacle and $W^{1,p}$ metrics with $p\in(n+1,\infty]$. In this framework, we prove the $C^{1,α}$ regularity of the regular free boundary and derive the leading order asymptotic expansion of solutions at regular free boundary points. We further show the optimal $C^{1,\min\{1-\frac{n+1}{p}, \frac{1}{2}\}}$ regularity of solutions. New ingredients include the use of the Reifenberg flatness of the regular free boundary, the construction of an (almost) optimal barrier function and the introduction of an appropriate splitting of the solution. Important insights depend on the consideration of various intrinsic geometric structures. Based on variations of the arguments in \cite{KRS14} and the present article, we then also discuss the case of non-zero and interior thin obstacles. We obtain the optimal regularity of the solutions and the regularity of the regular free boundary for $W^{1,p}$ metrics and $W^{2,p}$ obstacles with $p\in (2(n+1),\infty]$.

Surface Energies Emerging in a Microscopic, Two-Dimensional Two-Well Problem

In this article we are interested in the microscopic modeling of a two-dimensional two-well problem which arises from the square-to-rectangular transformation in (two-dimensional) shape-memory materials. In this discrete set-up, we focus on the surface energy scaling regime and further analyze the Hamiltonian which was introduced in \cite{KLR14}. It turns out that this class of Hamiltonians allows for a direct control of the discrete second order gradients and for a one-sided comparison with a two-dimensonal spin system. Using this and relying on the ideas of Conti and Schweizer \cite{CS06}, \cite{CS06a}, \cite{CS06c}, which were developed for a continuous analogue of the model under consideration, we derive a (first order) continuum limit. This shows the emergence of surface energy in the form of a sharp-interface limiting model as well the explicit structure of the minimizers to the latter.
