Power law scaling in Universal Extra Dimension scenarios

We study the power law running of gauge, Yukawa and quartic scalar couplings in the universal extra dimension scenario where the extra dimension is accessed by all the standard model fields. After compactifying on an $S_1 /Z_2$ orbifold, we compute one-loop contributions of the relevant Kaluza-Klein (KK) towers to the above couplings up to a cutoff scale $Λ$. Beyond the scale of inverse radius, once the KK states are excited, these couplings exhibit power law dependence on $Λ$. As a result of faster running, the gauge couplings tend to unify at a relatively low scale, and we choose our cutoff also around that scale. For example, for a radius $R \sim 1 TeV^{-1}$, the cutoff is around 30 TeV. We then examine the consequences of power law running on the triviality and vacuum stability bounds on the Higgs mass. We also comment that the supersymmetric extension of the scenario requires $R^{-1}$ to be larger than $\sim 10^{10}$ GeV in order that the gauge couplings remain perturbative up to the scale where they tend to unify.

What does the muon-neutrino oscillate into?

The favoured resolution of the atmospheric neutrino anomaly involves an oscillation of the muon neutrino to a different state. Current experiments allow for the latter to contain a significantly large fraction of a non-standard flavour. We demonstrate how the next generation of experiments may take advantage of matter effects to resolve this issue.

SUSY Resonances from UHE neutralinos in Neutrino Telescopes and in the Sky

In the Top-down scenarios, the decay of super-heavy particles (m~10^{12-16}GeV), situated in dark-matter halos not very far from our Galaxy, can explain the ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic-ray spectrum beyond the Griesen-Zatasepin-Kuzmin cut-off. In the MSSM, a major component of the UHE cosmic-ray flux at PeV-EeV energies could be given by the lightest neutralino χ, that is the lightest stable supersymmetric particle. Then, the signal of UHE χ's on earth might emerge over the interactions of a comparable neutrino component. We compute the event rates for the resonant production of "right" selectrons and "right" squarks in mSUGRA, when UHE neutralinos of energy larger than 10^5 GeV scatter off electrons and quarks in an earth-based detector like IceCube. When the resonant channel dominates in the total χ-e,χ-q scattering cross section, the only model parameters affecting the corresponding visible signal rates turn out to be the physical masses of the resonant right-scalar and of the lightest neutralino. We compare the expected number of supersymmetric events with the rates corresponding to the expected Glashow W resonance and to the continuum UHE ν-N scattering for realistic power-law spectra. We find that the event rate in the leptonic selectron channel is particularly promising, and can reach a few tens for a one-year exposure in IceCube. Finally, we note that UHE neutralinos at much higher energies (up to hundreds ZeV) may produce sneutrino resonances by scattering off relic neutrinos in the Local Group hot dark halo. The consequent \tildeν-burst into hadronic final states could mimic Z-burst events, although with quite smaller conversion efficiency.

Detecting matter effects in long baseline experiments

Experiments strongly suggest that the flavour mixing responsible for the atmospheric neutrino anomaly is very close to being maximal. Thus, it is of great theoretical as well as experimental importance to measure any possible deviation from maximality. In this context, we reexamine the effects of matter interactions in long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. Contrary to popular belief, the muon neutrino survival probability is shown to be quite sensitive to matter effects. Moreover, for moderately long baselines, the difference between the survival probilities for $ν_μ$ and $\barν_μ$ is shown to be large and sensitive to the deviation of $|U_{μ3}|$ from maximality. Performing a realistic analysis, we demonstrate that a muon-storage ring $ν$-source alongwith an iron calorimeter detector can measure such deviations. (Contrary to recent claims, this is not so for the NuMI--{\sc minos} experiment.) We also discuss the possible correlation in measuring $U_{μ3}$ and $U_{e3}$ in such experiment.

Atmospheric Neutrinos as a Probe of CPT Violation

We show that atmospheric neutrinos can provide a sensitive and robust probe of CPT violation (CPTV). We perform realistic event-rate calculations and study the variations of the ratio of total muon to antimuon survival rates with $L/E$ and $L$ ($L$ $\equiv$ baseline length, $E$ $\equiv$ neutrino energy) in a detector capable of identifying the muon charge. We demonstrate that measurements of these ratios when coupled with the significant $L$ and $E$ range which characterizes the atmospheric neutrino spectrum provides a method of both detecting the presence of such violations and putting bounds on them which compare very favourably with those possible from a future neutrino factory.

Single sneutrino production at hadron colliders

We study the production of a single sneutrino in association with one or two $b$-quarks at hadron colliders, in the framework of an R-parity violating supersymmetric model. We find that at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) four $b$ final states are promising with efficient b-tagging. $l^+l'^-$ decay modes of the sneutrino can also be viable for detection at the LHC. However, the branching ratio for rare $γγ$ decay channel is too small to be seen.

Invisible Higgs in theories of large extra dimensions

We discuss the possibility of detecting a Higgs boson in future collider experiments if large extra dimensions are realized in nature. In such a case, the Higgs boson can decay invisibly by oscillating into a graviscalar Kaluza-Klein (KK) tower. We show that the search for such a Higgs at an $e^+ e^-$ linear collider entails more complications than are usually thought of in relation to an invisibly decaying Higgs, the main sources of such complications being the simultaneous presence of a continuum graviton production and the broadening of the Higgs peak. We discuss possible ways of overcoming such difficulties, and conclude that the detection of such a Higgs boson might still be a problem beyond the mass range of 250-300 GeV.

Hexagonal-to-Cubic Phase Transformation in GaN Nanowires by Ga+-Implantation

Hexagonal to cubic phase transformation is studied in focused ion beam assisted Ga+-implanted GaN nanowires. Optical photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence studies along with high-resolution transmission electron microscopic structural studies are performed to confirm the phase transformation. In one possibility, sufficient accumulation of Ga from the implanted source might have reduced the surface energy and simultaneously stabilized the cubic phase. Other potential reason may be that the fluctuations in the short-range order induced by enhanced dynamic annealing (defect annihilation) with the irradiation process stabilize the cubic phase and cause the phase transformation.

Hunting Radions at Linear Colliders

We investigate the possibility to disentangle the radions in the Randall-Sundrum scenario from higgs boson at the next generation high energy $e^+ e^-$ linear colliders. Due to trace anomaly, the radion coupling (and in turn the branching ratio) to gluons is enhanced over the same for the Standard Model (SM) higgs. We study the radion production at electron-positron colliders, via the fusion of W-bosons in association with neutrinos, and propose to investigate radion decay to a pair of gluons. At 500 GeV center of mass energy, our signal is not very promising. We find our results are encouraging for finding radion and differentiating it from higgs for center of mass energies of 1 TeV and above.

Violation of Angular Momentum Selection Rules in Quantum Gravity

A simple consequence of the angular momentum conservation in quantum field theories is that the interference of s-channel amplitudes exchanging particles with different spin J vanishes after complete angular integration. We show that, while this rule holds in scattering processes mediated by a massive graviton in Quantum Gravity, a massless graviton s-channel exchange breaks orthogonality when considering its interference with a scalar-particle s-channel exchange, whenever all the external states are massive. As a consequence, we find that, in the Einstein theory, unitarity implies that angular momentum is not conserved at quantum level in the graviton coupling to massive matter fields. This result can be interpreted as a new anomaly, revealing unknown aspects of the well-known van Dam - Veltman - Zakharov discontinuity.

Large extra dimension effects in Higgs boson production at linear colliders and Higgs factories

In the framework of quantum gravity propagating in large extra dimensions, the effects of virtual Kaluza-Klein graviton and graviscalar interference with Higgs boson production amplitudes are computed at linear colliders and Higgs factories. The interference of the almost-continuous spectrum of the KK gravitons with the standard model resonant amplitude is finite and predictable in terms of the fundamental D-dimensional Plank scale M_D and the number of extra dimensions δ. We find that, for M_D ~ 1 TeV and δ=2, effects of the order of a few percent could be detected for heavy Higgs bosons (m_H>500 GeV) in Higgs production both via WW fusion in e^+e^- colliders and at μ^+μ^- Higgs-boson factories.

ZZH coupling : A probe to the origin of EWSB ?

We argue that the $ZZH$ coupling constitutes a simple probe of the nature of the scalar sector responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking. We demonstrate the efficacy of this measure through an analysis of four-dimensional models containing scalars in arbitrary representation of $SU(2) \times U(1)$, as well as extra-dimensional models with a non-factorizable geometry. A possible role for the $t \bar t H$ couplings is also discussed.

Slepton production from gauge boson fusion

We emphasise that charged slepton pairs produced via vector-boson fusion along with two high-mass, high-$p_T$ forward/backward jets (in two opposite hemispheres) can have a higher production cross-section for heavy slepton masses than that from conventional Drell-Yan production at a hadronic collider like the LHC. We analyse the signal and leading backgrounds in detail in the minimal supersymmetric standard model with conserved baryon and lepton numbers. Our investigation reveals that the mass reach of the vector-boson fusion channel is certainly an improvement over the scope of the Drell-Yan mode.

Characteristic slepton signal in anomaly mediated SUSY breaking models via gauge boson fusion at the LHC

We point out that slepton pairs produced via gauge boson fusion in anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) model have very characteristic and almost clean signal at the Large Hadron Collider. In this article, we discuss how one lepton associated with missing energy and produced in between two high-$p_T$ and high-mass forward jets can explore quite heavy sleptons in this scenario.

Virtual graviton exchanges at the Z-pole in large extra dimensions

In the framework of quantum gravity propagating in large extra dimensions, the effects of virtual Kaluza-Klein gravitons on the imaginary part of the amplitude of the process e+ e- --> f f-bar are analyzed at the Z-pole. Notably, the interference of the almost-continuous spectrum of the KK gravitons with the standard model resonant amplitude is finite and predictable in terms of the fundamental D-dimensional Plank scale M_D. We find that, while the virtual-gravitons effect on total cross sections vanishes at tree-level, both angular and polarization asymmetries are modified by terms whose relative effect is at most of order 10^(-4) for M_D > 1 TeV. Possible shifts in the M_Z, due to changes in the Breit-Wigner line shape are also discussed.

Radiative production of invisible charginos in photon photon collision

If in a supersymmetric model, the lightest chargino is nearly degenerate with the lightest neutralino, the former can decay into the latter alongwith a soft pion (or a lepton-neutrino pair). Near degeneracy of the chargino and neutralino masses can cause the other decay products (the pion or the lepton) to be almost invisible. Photon-photon colliders offer a possibility of clean detection of such an event through a hard photon tag.

Invisible charginos and neutralinos from gauge boson fusion : a way to explore anomaly mediation ?

We point out that vector boson fusion (VBF) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) can lead to useful signals for charginos and neutralinos in supersymmetric scenarios where these particles are almost invisible. The proposed signals are just two forward jets with missing transverse energy. It is shown that in this way one can put by far the strongest constraint on the parameter space of a theory with anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) at the LHC. In addition, scenarios where the lightest neutralinos and charginos are Higgsino-like can give signals of the above type.

Radion and Higgs mixing at the LHC

We study the resonance production of radions and Higgs via gluon-gluon fusion in the Randall-Sundrum model with Higgs-curvature mixing at the LHC. We find that radion can be detected both in mixed (with Higgs boson) and unmixed case if the radion vacuum expectation value $Λ_ϕ$ is around 1 TeV. The $Λ_ϕ\sim 10$ TeV case is also promising for certain values of mixing parameters and radion masses. The mixing can affect the production and decay of Higgs boson in a significant way. Thus Higgs search strategies at the LHC may need refinements in case of radion-Higgs mixing in the Randall-Sundrum model.
