Parametrizing spaces of positive representations

Using Lusztig's total positivity in split real Lie groups V. Fock and A. Goncharov have introduced spaces of positive (framed) representations. For general semisimple Lie groups a generalization of Lusztig's total positivity was recently introduced by O. Guichard and A. Wienhard. They also introduced the associated space of positive representations. Here we consider the corresponding spaces of positive framed representations of the fundamental group of a punctured surface. We give several parametrizations of the spaces of framed positive representations. Using these parametrizations, we describe their topology and their homotopy type. We show that the number of connected components of the space of framed positive representations agrees with the number of connected components of the space of positive representations, and determine this number for simple Lie groups. Along the way, we also parametrize, for an arbitrary semisimple Lie group, the space of representations of the fundamental group of a punctured surface which are transverse with respect to a fixed ideal triangulation of the surface.

Noncommutative coordinates for symplectic representations

We introduce coordinates on the spaces of framed and decorated representations of the fundamental group of a surface with nonempty boundary into the symplectic group $Sp(2n,\mathbf R)$. These coordinates provide a noncommutative generalization of the parametrizations of the spaces of representations into $SL(2,\mathbf R)$ or $PSL(2,\mathbf R)$ given by Thurston, Penner, Kashaev, and Fock-Goncharov. On the space of decorated symplectic representations the coordinates give a geometric realization of the noncommutative cluster-like structures introduced by Berenstein-Retakh. The locus of positive coordinates maps to the space of framed maximal representations. We use this to determine an explicit homeomorphism between the space of framed maximal representations and a quotient by the group $O(n)$. This allows us to describe the homotopy type and, when $n=2$, to give an exact description of the singularities. Along the way, we establish a complete classification of pairs of nondegenerate quadratic forms.

Vector-valued Distance and Gyrocalculus on the Space of Symmetric Positive Definite Matrices

We propose the use of the vector-valued distance to compute distances and extract geometric information from the manifold of symmetric positive definite matrices (SPD), and develop gyrovector calculus, constructing analogs of vector space operations in this curved space. We implement these operations and showcase their versatility in the tasks of knowledge graph completion, item recommendation, and question answering. In experiments, the SPD models outperform their equivalents in Euclidean and hyperbolic space. The vector-valued distance allows us to visualize embeddings, showing that the models learn to disentangle representations of positive samples from negative ones.

Finding self-similar behavior in quantum many-body dynamics via persistent homology

Inspired by topological data analysis techniques, we introduce persistent homology observables and apply them in a geometric analysis of the dynamics of quantum field theories. As a prototype application, we consider data from a classical-statistical simulation of a two-dimensional Bose gas far from equilibrium. We discover a continuous spectrum of dynamical scaling exponents, which provides a refined classification of nonequilibrium self-similar phenomena. A possible explanation of the underlying processes is provided in terms of mixing strong wave turbulence and anomalous vortex kinetics components in point clouds. We find that the persistent homology scaling exponents are inherently linked to the geometry of the system, as the derivation of a packing relation reveals. The approach opens new ways of analyzing quantum many-body dynamics in terms of robust topological structures beyond standard field theoretic techniques.

Symplectic groups over noncommutative algebras

We introduce the symplectic group $\mathrm{Sp}_2(A,σ)$ over a noncommutative algebra $A$ with an anti-involution $σ$. We realize several classical Lie groups as $\mathrm{Sp}_2$ over various noncommutative algebras, which provides new insights into their structure theory. We construct several geometric spaces, on which the groups $\mathrm{Sp}_2(A,σ)$ act. We introduce the space of isotropic $A$-lines, which generalizes the projective line. We describe the action of $\mathrm{Sp}_2(A,σ)$ on isotropic $A$-lines, generalize the Kashiwara-Maslov index of triples and the cross ratio of quadruples of isotropic $A$-lines as invariants of this action. When the algebra $A$ is Hermitian or the complexification of a Hermitian algebra, we introduce the symmetric space $X_{\mathrm{Sp}_2(A,σ)}$, and construct different models of this space. Applying this to classical Hermitian Lie groups of tube type (realized as $\mathrm{Sp}_2(A,σ)$) and their complexifications, we obtain different models of the symmetric space as noncommutative generalizations of models of the hyperbolic plane and of the three-dimensional hyperbolic space. We also provide a partial classification of Hermitian algebras in Appendix A.

Symmetric Spaces for Graph Embeddings: A Finsler-Riemannian Approach

Learning faithful graph representations as sets of vertex embeddings has become a fundamental intermediary step in a wide range of machine learning applications. We propose the systematic use of symmetric spaces in representation learning, a class encompassing many of the previously used embedding targets. This enables us to introduce a new method, the use of Finsler metrics integrated in a Riemannian optimization scheme, that better adapts to dissimilar structures in the graph. We develop a tool to analyze the embeddings and infer structural properties of the data sets. For implementation, we choose Siegel spaces, a versatile family of symmetric spaces. Our approach outperforms competitive baselines for graph reconstruction tasks on various synthetic and real-world datasets. We further demonstrate its applicability on two downstream tasks, recommender systems and node classification.

Hermitian Symmetric Spaces for Graph Embeddings

Learning faithful graph representations as sets of vertex embeddings has become a fundamental intermediary step in a wide range of machine learning applications. The quality of the embeddings is usually determined by how well the geometry of the target space matches the structure of the data. In this work we learn continuous representations of graphs in spaces of symmetric matrices over C. These spaces offer a rich geometry that simultaneously admits hyperbolic and Euclidean subspaces, and are amenable to analysis and explicit computations. We implement an efficient method to learn embeddings and compute distances, and develop the tools to operate with such spaces. The proposed models are able to automatically adapt to very dissimilar arrangements without any apriori estimates of graph features. On various datasets with very diverse structural properties and reconstruction measures our model ties the results of competitive baselines for geometrically pure graphs and outperforms them for graphs with mixed geometric features, showcasing the versatility of our approach.

Anosov representations with Lipschitz limit set

We study Anosov representations whose limit set has intermediate regularity, namely is a Lipschitz submanifold of a flag manifold. We introduce an explicit linear functional, the unstable Jacobian, whose orbit growth rate is integral on this class of representations. We prove that many interesting higher rank representations, including $Θ$-positive representations, belong to this class, and establish several applications to rigidity results on the orbit growth rate in the symmetric space.

Hessian of Hausdorff dimension on purely imaginary directions

We extend classical results of Bridgeman-Taylor and McMullen on the Hessian of the Hausdorff dimension on quasi-Fuchsian space to the class of (1,1,2)-hyperconvex representations, a class introduced in arXiv:1902.01303 which includes small complex deformations of Hitchin representations and of $Θ$-positive representations. We also prove that the Hessian of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set at the inclusion $Γ\to PO(n,1) \to PU(n,1)$ is positive definite when $Γ$ is co-compact in $PO(n,1)$ (unless $n=2$ and the deformation is tangent to $\mathfrak{X}(Γ,PO(2,1))).$

Conformality for a robust class of non-conformal attractors

In this paper we investigate the Hausdorff dimension of limit sets of Anosov representations. In this context we revisit and extend the framework of hyperconvex representations and establish a convergence property for them, analogue to a differentiability property. As an application of this convergence, we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of a hyperconvex representation is equal to a suitably chosen critical exponent.

Flows on the PGL(V)-Hitchin component

In this article we define new flows on the Hitchin components for PGL(V). Special examples of these flows are associated to simple closed curves on the surface and give generalized twist flows. Other examples, so called eruption flows, are associated to pair of pants in S and capture new phenomena which are not present in the case when n = 2. Using these flows, we construct a global coordinate system on the Hitchin component. In a companion paper to this article two of the authors develop new tools to compute the Goldman symplectic form on the Hitchin component, and prove that this global coordinate system is a Darboux coordinate system.

Horofunction Compactifications of Symmetric Spaces

We consider horofunction compactifications of symmetric spaces with respect to invariant Finsler metrics. We show that any (generalized) Satake compactification can be realized as a horofunction compactification with respect to a polyhedral Finsler metric.

Positivity and higher Teichmüller theory

We introduce $Θ$-positivity, a new notion of positivity in real semisimple Lie groups. The notion of $Θ$-positivity generalizes at the same time Lusztig's total positivity in split real Lie groups as well as well known concepts of positivity in Lie groups of Hermitian type. We show that there are two other families of Lie groups, SO(p,q) for p<q, and a family of exceptional Lie groups, which admit a $Θ$-positive structure. We describe key aspects of $Θ$-positivity and make a connection with representations of surface groups and higher Teichmüller theory.

Deforming convex real projective structures

Let S be a closed, connected, orientable surface of genus at least 2, and let C(S) denote the deformation space of convex real projective structures S. In this article, we introduce two new flows on C(S), which we call the internal bulging flow and the eruption flow. These are geometrically defined flows associated to each pair of pants in a pants decomposition on S that deform the internal parameters. We show that the eruption flows, together with the generalized twist flows about the pants curves, give rise to a half-dimensional family of commuting flows on C(S).

Anosov representations and proper actions

We establish several characterizations of Anosov representations of word hyperbolic groups into real reductive Lie groups, in terms of a Cartan projection or Lyapunov projection of the Lie group. Using a properness criterion of Benoist and Kobayashi, we derive applications to proper actions on homogeneous spaces of reductive groups.

On weakly maximal representations of surface groups

We introduce and study a new class of representations of surface groups into Lie groups of Hermitian type, called {\em weakly maximal} representations. We prove that weakly maximal representations are discrete and injective and we describe the structure of the Zariski closure of their image. Furthermore we prove that the set of weakly maximal representations is a closed subset of the representation variety and describe its relation to other geometrically significant subsets of the representation variety.
