On order preserving representations

In this article we introduce order preserving representations of fundamental groups of surfaces into Lie groups with bi-invariant orders. By relating order preserving representations to weakly maximal representations, introduced in arXiv:1305.2620, we show that order preserving representations into Lie groups of Hermitian type are faithful with discrete image and that the set of order preserving representations is closed in the representation variety. For Lie groups of Hermitian type whose associated symmetric space is of tube type we give a geometric characterization of these representations in terms of the causal structure on the Shilov boundary.

Tameness of Riemannian locally symmetric spaces arising from Anosov representations

We construct compactifications of Riemannian locally symmetric spaces arising as quotients by Anosov representations. These compactifications are modeled on generalized Satake compactifications and, in certain cases, on maximal Satake compactifications. We deduce that these Riemannian locally symmetric spaces are topologically tame, i.e. homeomorphic to the interior of a compact manifold with boundary. We also construct domains of discontinuity (not necessarily with a compact quotient) in a much more general setting.

Compactification of certain Clifford-Klein forms of reductive homogeneous spaces

We describe smooth compactifications of certain families of reductive homogeneous spaces such as group manifolds for classical Lie groups, or pseudo-Riemannian analogues of real hyperbolic spaces and their complex and quaternionic counterparts. We deduce compactifications of Clifford-Klein forms of these homogeneous spaces, namely quotients by discrete groups Gamma acting properly discontinuously, in the case that Gamma is word hyperbolic and acts via an Anosov representation. In particular, these Clifford-Klein forms are topologically tame.

Limits of geometries

A geometric transition is a continuous path of geometric structures that changes type, meaning that the model geometry, i.e. the homogeneous space on which the structures are modeled, abruptly changes. In order to rigorously study transitions, one must define a notion of geometric limit at the level of homogeneous spaces, describing the basic process by which one homogeneous geometry may transform into another. We develop a general framework to describe transitions in the context that both geometries involved are represented as sub-geometries of a larger ambient geometry. Specializing to the setting of real projective geometry, we classify the geometric limits of any sub-geometry whose structure group is a symmetric subgroup of the projective general linear group. As an application, we classify all limits of three-dimensional hyperbolic geometry inside of projective geometry, finding Euclidean, Nil, and Sol geometry among the limits. We prove, however, that the other Thurston geometries, in particular $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ and $\widetilde{\operatorname{SL}_2 \mathbb{R}}$, do not embed in any limit of hyperbolic geometry in this sense.

Anosov representations: Domains of discontinuity and applications

The notion of Anosov representations has been introduced by Labourie in his study of the Hitchin component for SL(n,R). Subsequently, Anosov representations have been studied mainly for surface groups, in particular in the context of higher Teichmueller spaces, and for lattices in SO(1,n). In this article we extend the notion of Anosov representations to representations of arbitrary word hyperbolic groups and start the systematic study of their geometric properties. In particular, given an Anosov representation of $Γ$ into G we explicitly construct open subsets of compact G-spaces, on which $Γ$ acts properly discontinuously and with compact quotient. As a consequence we show that higher Teichmueller spaces parametrize locally homogeneous geometric structures on compact manifolds. We also obtain applications regarding (non-standard) compact Clifford-Klein forms and compactifications of locally symmetric spaces of infinite volume.

Higher Teichmüller Spaces: from SL(2,R) to other Lie groups

The first part of this paper surveys several characterizations of Teichmüller space as a subset of the space of representation of the fundamental group of a surface into PSL(2,R). Special emphasis is put on (bounded) cohomological invariants which generalize when PSL(2,R) is replaced by a Lie group of Hermitian type. The second part discusses underlying structures of the two families of higher Teichmüller spaces, namely the space of maximal representations for Lie groups of Hermitian type and the space of Hitchin representations or positive representations for split real simple Lie groups.

Weakly maximal representations of surface groups

We introduce and study a new class of representations of surface groups into Lie groups of Hermitian type, called weakly maximal representations. They are defined in terms of invariants in bounded cohomology and extend considerably the scope of maximal representations. We prove that weakly maximal representations are discrete and injective and describe the structure of the Zariski closure of the image. An interesting feature of these representations is that they admit an elementary topological characterization in terms of bi-invariant orderings. In particular if the target group is Hermitian of tube type, the ordering can be described in terms of the causal structure on the Shilov boundary.

Topological Invariants of Anosov Representations

We define new topological invariants for Anosov representations and study them in detail for maximal representations of the fundamental group of a closed oriented surface into the symplectic group.

Tight homomorphisms and Hermitian symmetric spaces

We introduce the notion of tight homomorphism into a locally compact group with nonvanishing bounded cohomology and study these homomorphisms in detail when the target is a Lie group of Hermitian type. Tight homomorphisms between Lie groups of Hermitian type give rise to tight totally geodesic maps of Hermitian symmetric spaces. We show that tight maps behave in a functorial way with respect to the Shilov boundary and use this to prove a general structure theorem for tight homomorphisms. Furthermore we classify all tight embeddings of the Poincare' disk.

Surface group representations with maximal Toledo invariant

We develop the theory of maximal representations of the fundamental group of a compact connected oriented surface with boundary, into a group of Hermitian type. For any such representation we define the Toledo invariant, for which we establish properties such as uniform boundedness on the representation variety, additivity under connected sum of surfaces and congruence relations. We thus obtain geometric properties of the maximalrepresentations, that is representations whose Toledo invariant achieves the maximum value: we show that maximal representations have discrete image, are faithful and completely reducible and they always preserve a maximal tube type subdomain. This extends to the case of a general Hermitian group some of the properties of the representations in Teichmuller space, as well as results due to Goldman, Toledo, Hernandez, Bradlow--Garcia-Prada--Gothen. An announcement of these results in the case of surfaces without boundary -- where the role of tube type domains had already been emphasized -- appeared in 2003 by the same authors. The congruence relations for the Toledo invariant involve a rotation number function related to a continuous homogeneous quasimorphism which gives an explicit way to compute the Toledo invariant. This rotation number generalizes constructions due to Ghys, Barge--Ghys, and Clerc--Koufany. We establish moreover properties of boundary maps associated to maximal representations which generalize naturally, for the causal structure of the Shilov boundary, monotonicity properties of quasiconjugations of the circle. This, together with the congruence relations leads to the result that the subset of maximal representations is always real semialgebraic.

Convex Foliated Projective Structures and the Hitchin Component for PSL(4,R)

In this article we give a geometric interpretation of the Hitchin component for PSL(4,R) in the representation variety of a closed oriented surface of higher genus. We show that representations in the Hitchin component are precisely the holonomy representations of properly convex foliated projective structures on the unit tangent bundle of the surface. From this we also deduce a geometric description of the Hitchin component the symplectic group PSp(4,R).

Maximal Representations of Surface Groups: Symplectic Anosov Structures

Let G be a connected semisimple Lie group such that the associated symmetric space X is Hermitian and let Gamma be the fundamental group of a compact orientable surface of genus at least 2. We survey the study of maximal representations, that is the subset of Hom(Gamma,G) which is a union of components characterized by the maximality of the Toledo invariant. Then we concentrate on the particular case G=SP(2n,R), and we show that the image of Gamma under any maximal representation is a discrete faithful realization of Gamma as a Kleinian group of complex motions in X with an associated Anosov system, and whose limit set in an appropriate compactification of X is a rectifiable circle.

Bounded Cohomology and Geometry

This work deals with relations between a bounded cohomological invariant and the geometry of Hermitian symmetric spaces of noncompact type. The invariant, obtained from the Kähler class, is used to define and characterize a special class of totally geodesic embeddings, called "tight embeddings". In addition, special isometric actions of finitely generated groups on Hermitian symmetric spaces are studied. Results of a joint work with M. Burger and A. Iozzi about surface group representations are also discussed.
