Polarization of the top quark as a probe of its chromomagnetic and chromoelectric couplings in single-top production at the Large Hadron Collider

We study the sensitivity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to top quark chromomagnetic (CMDM) and chromoelectric (CEDM) dipole moments and $Wtb$ effective couplings in single-top production in association with a $W^-$ boson, followed by semileptonic decay of the top. We calculate the top polarization and the effects of these anomalous couplings on it at two centre-of-mass (cm) energies, 8 TeV and 14 TeV. As a measure of top polarization, we look at decay-lepton angular distributions in the laboratory frame, without requiring reconstruction of the rest frame of the top, and study the effect of the anomalous couplings on these distributions. We construct certain asymmetries to study the sensitivity of these distributions to top-quark couplings. The Wt single-top production mode helps to isolate the anomalous $ttg$ and $Wtb$ couplings, in contrast to top-pair production and other single-top production modes, where other new-physics effects can also contribute. We determine individual limits on the dominant couplings, viz., the real part of the CMDM $Reρ_2$, the imaginary part of the CEDM $Imρ_3$, and the real part of the tensor Wtb coupling $Ref_{2r}$, which may be obtained by utilizing these asymmetries at the LHC. We also obtain simultaneous limits on pairs of these couplings taking two couplings to be non-zero at a time.

Predictions for Sivers single spin asymmetries in one- and two-hadron electroproduction at CLAS12 and EIC

The study of the Sivers effect, describing correlations between the transverse polarization of the nucleon and its constituent (unpolarized) parton's transverse momentum, has been the topic of a great deal of experimental, phenomenological and theoretical effort in recent years. Semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering measurements of the corresponding single spin asymmetries (SSA) at the upcoming CLAS12 experiment at JLab and the proposed Electron-Ion Collider will help to pinpoint the flavor structure and the momentum dependence of the Sivers parton distribution function describing this effect. Here we describe a modified version of the $\tt{PYTHIA}$ Monte Carlo event generator that includes the Sivers effect. Then we use it to estimate the size of these SSAs, in the kinematics of these experiments, for both one and two hadron final states of pions and kaons. For this purpose we utilize the existing Sivers parton distribution function (PDF) parametrization extracted from HERMES and COMPASS experiments. Using this modified version of $\tt{PYTHIA}$, we also show that the the leading order approximation commonly used in such extractions may provide significantly underestimated values of Sivers PDFs, as in our Monte Carlo simulations the omitted parton showers and non-DIS processes play an important role in these SSAs, for example in the COMPASS kinematics.

Relativistic and Nuclear Medium Effects on the Coulomb Sum Rule

In light of the forthcoming high precision quasielastic electron scattering data from Jefferson Lab, it is timely for the various approaches to nuclear structure to make robust predictions for the associated response functions. With this in mind, we focus here on the longitudinal response function and the corresponding Coulomb sum rule for isospin-symmetric nuclear matter at various baryon densities. Using a quantum field-theoretic quark-level approach which preserves the symmetries of quantum chromodynamics, as well as exhibiting dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and quark confinement, we find a dramatic quenching of the Coulomb sum rule for momentum transfers $\left|\mathbf{q}\right| \gtrsim 0.5\,$GeV. The main driver of this effect lies in changes to the proton Dirac form factor induced by the nuclear medium. Such a dramatic quenching of the Coulomb sum rule was not seen in a recent quantum Monte Carlo calculation for carbon, suggesting that the Jefferson Lab data may well shed new light on the explicit role of QCD in nuclei.

Rho meson form factors in a confining Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

Elastic electromagnetic form factors for the $ρ^+$ meson are calculated in a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model which incorporates quark confinement through the use of the proper-time regularization scheme. A comparison is made with recent lattice QCD results and previous quark model calculations for static quantities and the Sachs form factors. The results are qualitatively in good agreement with the lattice QCD calculations, with the exception of the quadrupole moment and corresponding form factor, which may be related to a lack of spherical symmetry on the lattice.

Lattice QCD Evidence that the Lambda(1405) Resonance is an Antikaon-Nucleon Molecule

For almost 50 years the structure of the Lambda(1405) resonance has been a mystery. Even though it contains a heavy strange quark and has odd parity, its mass is lower than any other excited spin-1/2 baryon. Dalitz and co-workers speculated that it might be a molecular state of an antikaon bound to a nucleon. However, a standard quark-model structure is also admissible. Although the intervening years have seen considerable effort, there has been no convincing resolution. Here we present a new lattice QCD simulation showing that the strange magnetic form factor of the Lambda(1405) vanishes, signaling the formation of an antikaon-nucleon molecule. Together with a Hamiltonian effective-field-theory model analysis of the lattice QCD energy levels, this strongly suggests that the structure is dominated by a bound antikaon-nucleon component. This result clarifies that not all states occurring in nature can be described within a simple quark model framework and points to the existence of exotic molecular meson-nucleon bound states.

Study of Kaon Decay to Two Pions

The weak decay of the kaon to two pions is studied within the NJL Model. Using the standard effective weak Hamiltonian, both the decay amplitude arising from an intermediate state σ-meson and the direct decay amplitude are calculated. The effect of final state interactions is also included. When the matching scale is chosen such that the decay amplitude with isospin I=2 is close to its experimental value, the σ-meson contributes more than 85% of the total I=0 amplitude. This supports recent suggestions that the σ-meson should play a vital role in explaining the ΔI= 1/2 rule in this system.

SU(3)-flavour breaking in octet baryon masses and axial couplings

The lightest baryon octet is studied within a covariant and confining Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. By solving the relativistic Faddeev equations including scalar and axialvector diquarks, we determine the masses and axial charges for ΔS = 0 transitions. For the latter the degree of violation of SU(3) symmetry arising because of the strange spectator quark(s) is found to be up to 10%.

On the Structure of the Lambda 1405

For almost 50 years the structure of the Lambda 1405 resonance has been a mystery. Recently, a new lattice QCD simulation showing that its strange magnetic form factor vanishes, together with a comprehensive Hamiltonian analysis of the lattice QCD energy levels, has unambiguously established that the structure is dominated by a bound anti-kaon--nucleon component [1]. Here we present supplementary information for Ref. [1] including a presentation of the relevant Hamiltonian effective field theory and an illustration of the volume dependence of the results and their connection to the infinite volume limit of Nature.

Pion Valence-quark Parton Distribution Function

Within the Dyson-Schwinger equation formulation of QCD, a rainbow ladder truncation is used to calculate the pion valence-quark distribution function(PDF). The gap equation is renormalized at a typical hadronic scale, of order 0.5GeV, which is also set as the default initial scale for the pion PDF. We implement a corrected leading-order expression for the PDF which ensures that the valence-quarks carry all of the pion's light-front momentum at the initial scale. The scaling behavior of the pion PDF at a typical partonic scale of order 5.2GeV is found to be $(1-x)^ν$, with $ν\simeq 1.6$, as $x$ approaches one.

Sivers Effect in Dihadron Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

The Sivers effect describes the correlation of the unpolarized parton's transverse momentum with the transverse spin of the nucleon. It manifests as a sine modulation of the cross section for single hadron semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) on a transversely polarized nucleon with the azimuthal angle between the produced hadron's transverse momentum and the nucleon spin ($φ_h$ and $φ_S$, respectively). It has been recently suggested that the Sivers effect can also be measured in two hadron SIDIS process as sine modulations involving the azimuthal angles $φ_T$ and $φ_R$ of both the total and the relative transverse momenta of the hadron pair. Here we present the detailed derivation of the two hadron SIDIS cross section using simple parton-model inspired functional forms for both the parton distribution and the fragmentation functions. We show explicitly that the terms corresponding to the $\sin(φ_R-φ_S)$ and $\sin(φ_T-φ_S)$ modulations are non-zero. Further, we derive the cross section expressions for single hadron production in the two hadron sample. Finally, we employ a modified version of the $\tt{LEPTO}$ Monte Carlo event generator that includes the Sivers effect to estimate the size of single spin asymmetries corresponding to these modulations independent of the formalism developed.

Sivers Effect in Two-Hadron Electroproduction

The Sivers effect in single hadron semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) on a transversely polarized nucleon describes the modulation of the cross section with the sine of the azimuthal angle between the produced hadron's transverse momentum and the nucleon spin ($\boldsymbol{P}_h$ and $φ_S$ respectively). This effect is attributed to the so-called Sivers parton distribution function of the nucleon. We employ a simple phenomenological parton model to derive the relevant cross section for two-hadron production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering including the Sivers effect. We show that the Sivers effect can be observed in such process as sine modulations involving the azimuthal angles $φ_T$ and $φ_R$ of both the total and the relative transverse momenta of the hadron pair. The existence of the modulation with respect to $φ_R$ is new. Finally, we employ a modified version of the $\tt{LEPTO}$ Monte Carlo event generator that includes the Sivers effect to estimate the size of single spin asymmetries corresponding to these modulations. We show that $\sin(φ_R-φ_S)$ modulations can be significant, especially if we impose asymmetric cuts on the momenta of the hadrons in the pairs.

Sivers Effect in Dihadron Electroproduction

The Sivers effect in polarized SIDIS can be measured in two hadron production as sine modulations involving the azimuthal angles $φ_T$ and $φ_R$ of both the total and the relative transverse momenta of the hadron pair, complementary to the conventional single hadron studies. In this talk we briefly present the results obtained in our recent work [1] and [2]. We also present the leading order parton model expression for the two hadron SIDIS cross section for different choices of the relative transverse momentum that dismiss the seeming contradiction of our results with previous work. Finally, we show the numerical predictions for the corresponding single spin asymmetries in the kinematics of COMPASS experiment obtained using the modified version of the $\tt{LEPTO}$ Monte Carlo event generator that includes the Sivers effect.

Role of diquark correlations and the pion cloud in nucleon elastic form factors

Electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon in the space-like region are investigated within the framework of a covariant and confining Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The bound state amplitude of the nucleon is obtained as the solution of a relativistic Faddeev equation, where diquark correlations appear naturally as a consequence of the strong coupling in the colour $\bar{3}$ $qq$ channel. Pion degrees of freedom are included as a perturbation to the "quark-core" contribution obtained using the Poincaré covariant Faddeev amplitude. While no model parameters are fit to form factor data, excellent agreement is obtained with the empirical nucleon form factors (including the magnetic moments and radii) where pion loop corrections play a critical role for $Q^2 \lesssim 1\,$GeV$^2$. Using charge symmetry, the nucleon form factors can be expressed as proton quark sector form factors. The latter are studied in detail, leading, for example, to the conclusion that the $d$-quark sector of the Dirac form factor is much softer than the $u$-quark sector, a consequence of the dominance of scalar diquark correlations in the proton wave function. On the other hand, for the proton quark sector Pauli form factors we find that the effect of the pion cloud and axialvector diquark correlations overcomes the effect of scalar diquark dominance, leading to a larger $d$-quark anomalous magnetic moment and a form factor in the $u$-quark sector that is slightly softer than in the $d$-quark sector.

Modification of Hadron Structure and Properties in Medium

In the quest to understand QCD there are a number of outstanding challenges. Here we focus on one of these, namely what one expects to happen to the structure of a hadron when it is immersed in a nuclear medium. We argue that the necessary changes in the quark structure are intimately related to nuclear binding and saturation. Some of the potential experimental implications of these ideas are discussed.

Studies of Azimuthal Modulations in Two Hadron Fragmentation of a Transversely Polarised Quark

We study the azimuthal modulations of dihadron fragmentation functions (DiFFs) of a transversely polarised quark using an NJL-jet based model that incorporates the Collins effect for single hadron emission. The DiFFs are extracted as Monte Carlo (MC) averages of corresponding multiplicities using their probabilistic interpretation. To simplify the model and highlight the possible mechanisms that create this modulation, we choose the elementary Collins function to be proportional to the elementary unpolarised fragmentation and a constant probability ($P_{SF}$) for the quark to flip its spin after a single hadron emission. Moreover, as a leading order calculation, only one of the produced hadrons in the decay chain of the quark is produced with elementary Collins modulation. We calculate the dependence of the polarised DiFFs on various angles such as the azimuthal angle of the single hadron and the angle of the two hadron production plane $φ_R$ for several values of $P_{SF}$. We observe that the polarised DiFFs for oppositely charged pion pairs exhibit a $\sin(φ_R)$ modulation. This effect is induced purely via the elementary Collins effect and persists even when the quark completely depolarises after a single hadron emission ($P_{SF}=0.5$). Moreover, similar sine modulations are present in the distribution of pion pairs with respect to the azimuthal angle of their total transverse momentum, $φ_T$.

QCD symmetries in eta and etaprime mesic nuclei

We discuss the role of QCD symmetries and confinement in understanding eta and etaprime mesic nuclei. Eta and etaprime bound states in nuclei are sensitive to the flavour-singlet component in the meson. The bigger the singlet component, the more attraction and the greater the binding. Recent results on the etaprime mass in nuclei from the CBELSA/TAPS collaboration are very similar to the prediction of the Quark Meson Coupling model. In the model eta-etaprime mixing induces a factor of two enhancement of the eta-nucleon scattering length relative to the prediction with a pure octet eta, with real part about 0.8 fm.

Fractional Poisson processes and their representation by infinite systems of ordinary differential equations

Fractional Poisson processes, a rapidly growing area of non-Markovian stochastic processes, are useful in statistics to describe data from counting processes when waiting times are not exponentially distributed. We show that the fractional Kolmogorov-Feller equations for the probabilities at time t can be representated by an infinite linear system of ordinary differential equations of first order in a transformed time variable. These new equations resemble a linear version of the discrete coagulation-fragmentation equations, well-known from the non-equilibrium theory of gelation, cluster-dynamics and phase transitions in physics and chemistry.
