Dihadron Fragmentation Functions within the NJL-jet Model

Dihadron Fragmentation Functions (DFF) provide a vast amount of information on the intricate details of the parton hadronization process. Moreover, they provide a unique access to the "clean" extraction of nucleon transversity parton distribution functions in semi inclusive deep inelastic two hadron production process with a transversely polarised target. The NJL-jet model has been extended for calculations of light and strange quark unpolarised DFFs to pions, kaons and several vector mesons. This is accomplished by using the probabilistic interpretation of the DFFs, and employing the NJL-jet hadronization model in the Monte Carlo simulations that includes the transverse momentum of the produced hadrons. The strong decays of the vector mesons and the subsequent modification of the pseudoscalar meson DFFs are also considered. The resulting pseudoscalar meson DFFs are strongly influenced by the decays of the relevant vector mesons. This is because of the large combinatorial factors involved in counting the number of the hadron pairs that include the decay products. The evolution of the DFFs from the model scale to a typical experimental scale has also been performed.

The Effect of Vector Meson Decays on Dihadron Fragmentation Functions

Dihadron Fragmentation Functions (DFF) provide a vast amount of information on the intricate details of the parton hadronization process. Moreover, they provide a unique access to the "clean" extraction of nucleon transversity parton distribution functions in semi inclusive deep inelastic two hadron production process with a transversely polarised target. On the example of the u \to π^+ π^-, we analyse the properties of unpolarised DFFs using their probabilistic interpretation. We use both the NJL-jet hadronization model and PYTHIA 8.1 event generator to explore the effect of the strong decays of the vector mesons produced in the quark hadronization process on the pseudoscalar DFFs. Our study shows that, even though it is less probable to produce vector mesons in the hadronization process than pseudo scalar mesons of the same charge, the products of their strong decays drastically affect the DFFs for pions because of the large combinatorial factors. Thus, an accurate description of both vector meson production and decays are crucial for theoretical understanding of DFFs.

Revealing dressed-quarks via the proton's charge distribution

The proton is arguably the most fundamental of Nature's readily detectable building blocks. It is at the heart of every nucleus and has never been observed to decay. It is nevertheless a composite object, defined by its valence-quark content: u+u+d -- i.e., two up (u) quarks and one down (d) quark; and the manner by which they influence, inter alia, the distribution of charge and magnetisation within this bound-state. Much of novelty has recently been learnt about these distributions; and it now appears possible that the proton's momentum-space charge distribution possesses a zero. Experiments in the coming decade should answer critical questions posed by this and related advances; and we explain how such new information may assist in charting the origin and impact of key emergent phenomena within the strong interaction. Specifically, we show that the possible existence and location of a zero in the proton's electric form factor are a measure of nonperturbative features of the quark-quark interaction in the Standard Model, with particular sensitivity to the running of the dressed-quark mass.

Nuclear Quasi-Elastic Electron Scattering Limits Nucleon Off-Mass Shell Properties

The use of quasi-elastic electron nucleus scattering is shown to provide significant constraints on models of the proton electromagnetic form factor of off-shell nucleons. Such models can be constructed to be consistent with constraints from current conservation and low-energy theorems, while also providing a contribution to the Lamb shift that might potentially resolve the proton radius puzzle in muonic hydrogen. However, observations of quasi-elastic scattering limit the overall strength of the off-shell form factors to values that correspond to small contributions to the Lamb shift.

Collins Fragmentation Function within NJL-jet Model

The NJL-jet model is extended to accommodate hadronization of a transversely polarized quark in order to explore the Collins effect within a multihadron emission framework. This is accomplished by calculating the polarized quark spin flip probabilities after a pseudoscalar hadron emission and the elementary Collins functions. The model is used to calculate the number densities of the hadrons produced in the polarized quark's decay chain. The full Collins fragmentation function is extracted from the sine modulation of the polarized number densities with respect to the polar angle between the initial quark's spin and hadron's transverse momentum. Two cases are studied here. First, a toy model for elementary Collins function is used to study the features of the transversely polarized quark-jet model. Second, a full model calculation of transverse momentum dependent pion and kaon Collins functions is presented. The remarkable feature of our model is that the 1/2 moments of the favored Collins fragmentation functions are positive and peak at large values of z but decrease and oscillate at small values of z. The 1/2 moments of the unfavored Collins functions have comparable magnitude and opposite sign to the favored functions, vanish at large z and peak at small values of z. This feature is observed for both the toy and full models and can be attributed to the quark-jet picture of hadronization. Moreover, the transverse momentum dependencies of the model Collins functions differ significantly from the Gaussian form widely used in the empirical parametrizations. Finally, a naive interpretation of the Schafer-Teryaev sum rule is proven not to hold in our model, where the transverse momentum conservation is explicitly enforced. This is attributed to the sizable average transverse momentum of the remnant quark that needs to be accounted for to satisfy the transverse momentum sum-rule.

Calculating Dihadron Fragmentation Functions in the NJL-jet model

The NJL-jet model provides a framework for calculating fragmentation functions without the introduction of ad hoc parameters. We develop the NJL-jet model to investigate dihadron fragmentation functions (DFFs) of the form $D^{h_1 h_2}_q(z_1,z_2)$. Here we studied DFFs for $q \to \{π^+ π^-\}$, $\{π^+ K^-\}$, and $\{K^+ K^-\}$,with $q = u, d, s$. The driving terms, which represent the probability of one of the hadrons being emitted in the first emission step of the quark-jet hadronization picture, dominate the solutions of the DFFs where either $z_1$ or $z_2$ is large, and $z_1$ ($z_2$) is the light-cone momentum fraction of the emitted hadron, $h_1$ ($h_2$). The higher order terms, which represent the probability of neither of the hadrons being emitted in the first emission step of the quark-jet, become more significant as $z_1$ ($z_2$) is lowered. Finally, we present a sample result for QCD evolution of DFFs, that significantly modify the model solutions when evolved to typical hadronic scale of $4 \mathrm{GeV}^2$.

Dihadron Fragmentation Functions from the NJL-jet model and their QCD Evolution

We present results for dihadron fragmentation functions from the NJL-jet model evolved from the model scale to a typical experimental scale of $4 \mathrm{GeV}^2$. The numerical method used in this evolution is discussed in detail. The effect of evolution on the shapes of the dihadron fragmentation functions is discussed for a doubly favored process ($u \to π^+π^-$), as well as a singly favored ($u \to π^+K^-$) process involving light quarks. Finally, we explore the production of $K^+ K^-$ pairs from an initial $u$, $d$ or $s$ quark.

Higher Order Collins Modulations in Transversely Polarized Quark Fragmentation

The Collins effect describes the modulation of the hadron production by a transversely polarized quark with the sine of the polar angle, $φ$, between the produced hadron's transverse momentum and the quark spin. We employ a quark-jet model to describe multiple hadron emissions by such a quark, taking the Collins effect into account. The resulting hadron distributions exhibit modulation up to fourth order in $\sin(φ)$ when only two hadron emissions are allowed, rising with any further increase in the number of emitted hadrons. These new effects are a direct consequence of the quark-jet mechanism for quark hadronization, which do not depend on the details of the model used for elementary hadron emission. The size and the sign of the higher order terms are directly connected with the probabilities of quark spin flip in the elementary emission process, with opposing sign favored and unfavored Collins functions only being generated if quark spin flip is preferential. Experimental studies of these effects should therefore provide a critical test of the quark hadronization mechanism, which in turn will lead to a deeper understanding of the transverse spin structure of hadrons.

Effects of Quark Spin Flip on the Collins Fragmentation Function in a Toy Model

The recent extension of the NJL-jet model to hadronization of transversely polarized quarks allowed the study of the Collins fragmentation function. Both favored and unfavored Collins fragmentation functions were generated, the latter purely by multiple hadron emissions, with 1/2 moments of opposite sign in the region of the light-cone momentum fraction $z$ accessible in current experiments. Hints of such behavior has been seen in the measurements in several experiments. Also, in the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) hadron emission probabilities, modulations of up to fourth order in sine of the polar angle were observed, while the Collins effect describes just the linear modulations. A crucial part of the extended model was the calculation of the quark spin flip probability after each hadron emission in the jet. Here we study the effects of this probability on the resulting unfavored and favored Collins functions by setting it as a constant and use a toy model for the elementary single hadron emission probabilities. The results of the Monte Carlo simulations showed that preferential quark spin flip in the elementary hadron emission is needed to generate the favored and unfavored Collins functions with opposite sign 1/2 moments. For the TMD hadron emission modulations, we showed that the model quark spin flip probabilities are a partial source of the higher rode modulations, while the other source is the Collins modulation of the remnant quark from the hadron emission recoil.

Neutralino-hadron scattering in the NMSSM

We provide a scan of the parameter space for neutralino-hadron scattering in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model using an updated value for the strange quark sigma commutator. These results also take into account constraints from WMAP data on the relic density and new constraints from the Large Hadron Collider. We find that the resultant spin-independent cross sections are smaller in magnitude than those found in recent results obtained within the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model, yet still great enough to feasibly allow for detection in the case of bino-like neutralinos.

Transverse Momentum Dependent Fragmentation and Quark Distribution Functions from the NJL-jet Model

Using the model of Nambu and Jona-Lasinio to provide a microscopic description of both the structure of the nucleon and of the quark to hadron elementary fragmentation functions, we investigate the transverse momentum dependence of the unpolarized quark distributions in the nucleon and of the quark to pion and kaon fragmentation functions. The transverse momentum dependence of the fragmentation functions is determined within a Monte Carlo framework, with the notable result that the average $P_\perp^2$ of the produced kaons is significantly larger than that of the pions. We also find that $ $ has a sizable $z$ dependence, in contrast with the naive Gaussian ansatz for the fragmentation functions. Diquark correlations in the nucleon give rise to a non-trivial flavor dependence in the unpolarized transverse momentum dependent quark distribution functions. The $ $ of the quarks in the nucleon are also found to have a sizable $x$ dependence. Finally, these results are used as input to a Monte Carlo event generator for semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS), which is used to determine the average transverse momentum squared of the produced hadrons measured in SIDIS, namely $ $. Again we find that the average $P_T^2$ of the produced kaons in SIDIS is significantly larger than that of the pions and in each case $\la P_T^2 \ra$ has a sizable $z$ dependence.

Gluon polarization in the proton

We combine heavy-quark renormalization group arguments with our understanding of the nucleon's wavefunction to deduce a bound on the gluon polarization Delta g in the proton. The bound is consistent with the values extracted from spin experiments at COMPASS and RHIC.

Monte Carlo Simulations of Hadronic Fragmentation Functions using NJL-Jet Model

The recently developed Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) - Jet model is used as an effective chiral quark theory to calculate the quark fragmentation functions to pions, kaons, nucleons, and antinucleons. The effects of the vector mesons rho, K* and phi on the production of secondary pions and kaons are included. The fragmentation processes to nucleons and antinucleons are described by using the quark-diquark picture, which has been shown to give a reasonable description of quark distribution functions. We incorporate effects of next-to-leading order (NLO) in the Q^2 evolution, and compare our results with the empirical fragmentation functions.

Monte-Carlo Approach to Calculating the Fragmentation Functions in NJL-Jet Model

Recent studies of the fragmentation functions using the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) - Jet model have been successful in describing the quark fragmentation functions to pions and kaons. The NJL-Jet model employs the integral equation approach to solve for the fragmentation functions in quark-cascade description of the hadron emission process, where one assumes that the initial quark has infinite momentum and emits an infinite number of hadrons. Here we introduce a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation method to solve for the fragmentation functions,, that allows us to relax the above mentioned approximations. We demonstrate that the results of MC simulations closely reproduce the solutions of the integral equations in the limit where a large number of hadrons are emitted in the quark cascade. The MC approach provides a strong foundation for the further development of the NJL-Jet model that might include many more hadronic emission channels with decays of the possible produced resonances, as well as inclusion of the transverse momentum dependence (TMD), all of which are of considerable importance to the experimental studies of the transverse structure of hadrons.

Calculating Kaon Fragmentation Functions from NJL-Jet Model

The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) - Jet model provides a sound framework for calculating the fragmentation functions in an effective chiral quark theory, where the momentum and isospin sum rules are satisfied without the introduction of ad hoc parameters. Earlier studies of the pion fragmentation functions using the NJL model within this framework showed qualitative agreement with the empirical parameterizations. Here we extend the NJL-Jet model by including the strange quark. The corrections to the pion fragmentation functions and corresponding kaon fragmentation functions are calculated using the elementary quark to quark-meson fragmentation functions from NJL. The results for the kaon fragmentation functions exhibit a qualitative agreement with the empirical parameterizations, while the unfavored strange quark fragmentation to pions is shown to be of the same order of magnitude as the unfavored light quark's. The results of these studies are expected to provide important guidance for the analysis of a large variety of semi-inclusive data.

Eta-etaprime mixing in eta-mesic nuclei

Eta bound states in nuclei are sensitive to the flavour-singlet component in the eta. The bigger the singlet component, the more attraction and the greater the binding. eta-etaprime mixing plays an important role in understanding the value of the eta-nucleon scattering length a_{ηN}. Working with the Quark Meson Coupling model, we find a factor of two enhancement from mixing relative to the prediction with a pure octet eta.

Kaon fragmentation function from NJL-jet model

The NJL-jet model provides a sound framework for calculating the fragmentation func- tions in an effective chiral quark theory, where the momentum and isospin sum rules are satisfied without the introduction of ad hoc parameters [1]. Earlier studies of the pion fragmentation func- tions using the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model within this framework showed good qualitative agreement with the empirical parameterizations. Here we extend the NJL-jet model by including the strange quark. The corrections to the pion fragmentation function and corresponding kaon fragmen- tation functions are calculated using the elementary quark to quark-meson fragmentation functions from NJL. The results for the kaon fragmentation function exhibit a qualitative agreement with the empirical parameterizations, while the unfavored strange quark fragmentation to pions is shown to be of the same order of magnitude as the unfavored light quark's. The results of these studies are expected to provide important guidance for the analysis of a large variety of semi-inclusive data.

The nucleon's octet axial-charge g_A^8 with chiral corrections

The value of the nucleon's flavour-singlet axial-charge extracted from polarised deep inelastic scattering is sensitive to the value of the octet axial-charge g_A^8 which is usually taken from an analysis of hyperon beta-decays within the framework of SU(3) symmetry, namely 0.58 \pm 0.03. Using the Cloudy Bag model we find that the value of g_A^8 is reduced by as much as 20% below the usual phenomenological value. This increases the value of the flavour singlet axial charge (g_A^0|_inv) derived from deep inelastic data and significantly reduces the difference between it and g_A^8.
