Symbolic powers of polymatroidal ideals

In this paper, we investigate the componentwise linearity and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of symbolic powers of polymatroidal ideals. For a polymatroidal ideal $I$, we conjecture that every symbolic power $I^{(k)}$ is componentwise linear and $$ \text{reg}\,I^{(k)}=\text{reg}\,I^k $$ for all $k \ge 1$. We prove that $\text{reg}\,I^{(k)}\ge\text{reg}\,I^k$ for all $k \ge 1$ when $I$ has no embedded associated primes, for instance if $I$ is a matroidal ideal. Moreover, we establish a criterion on the symbolic Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}_s(I)$ of a monomial ideal of minimal intersection type which guarantees that every symbolic power $I^{(k)}$ has linear quotients and, hence, is componentwise linear for all $k\ge1$. By applying our criterion to squarefree Veronese ideals and certain matching-matroidal ideals, we verify both conjectures for these families. We establish the Conforti-Cornuéjols conjecture for any matroidal ideal, and we show that a matroidal ideal is packed if and only if it is the product of monomial prime ideals with pairwise disjoint supports. Furthermore, we identify several classes of non-squarefree polymatroidal ideals for which the ordinary and symbolic powers coincide. Hence, we confirm our conjectures for transversal polymatroidal ideals and principal Borel ideals. Finally, we verify our conjectures for all polymatroidal ideals either generated in small degrees or in a small number of variables.

Cotangent functors and Herzog's last theorem

We present the theory of cotangent functors following the approach of Palamodov, and a conjecture of Herzog relating the vanishing of certain cotangent functors to the property of being a complete intersection.

Homological shifts of polymatroidal ideals

We study the homological shifts of polymatroidal ideals. In our main theorem we prove that the first homological shift ideal of any polymatroidal ideal is again polymatroidal, supporting a conjecture of Bandari, Bayati and Herzog that predicts that all homological shift ideals of a polymatroidal ideal are polymatroidal. As a nice consequence, we recover a result of Bayati which proves this conjecture in the squarefree case.

The size of the Betti table of Binomial Edge Ideals

Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on $n$ non-isolated vertices, and let $J_G$ be its binomial edge ideal. We determine almost all pairs $(\text{projdim}(J_G),\text{reg}(J_G))$, where $G$ ranges over all finite simple graphs on $n$ non-isolated vertices, for any $n$.

Bounds on Dao numbers and applications to regular local rings

The so-called Dao numbers are a sort of measure of the asymptotic behaviour of full properties of certain product ideals in a Noetherian local ring $R$ with infinite residue field and positive depth. In this paper, we answer a question of H. Dao on how to bound such numbers. The auxiliary tools range from Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of appropriate graded structures to reduction numbers of the maximal ideal. In particular, we substantially improve previous results (and answer questions) by the authors. Finally, as an application of the theory of Dao numbers, we provide new characterizations of when $R$ is regular; for instance, we show that this holds if and only if the maximal ideal of $R$ can be generated by a $d$-sequence (in the sense of Huneke) if and only if the third Dao number of any (minimal) reduction of the maximal ideal vanishes.

Sortable simplicial complexes and their associated toric rings

Let $Γ$ be a $d$-flag sortable simplicial complex. We consider the toric ring $R_Γ=K[{\bf x}_Ft:F\in Γ]$ and the Rees algebra of the facet ideals $I(Γ^{[i]})$ of pure skeletons of $Γ$. We show that these algebras are Koszul, normal Cohen-Macaulay domains. Moreover, we study the Gorenstein property, the canonical module, and the $a$-invariant of the normal domain $R_Γ$ by investigating its divisor class group. Finally, it is shown that any $d$-flag sortable simplicial complex is vertex decomposable, which provides a characterization of the Cohen-Macaulay property of such complexes.

Componentwise linear symbolic powers of edge ideals and Minh's conjecture

In this paper, we study the componentwise linearity of symbolic powers of edge ideals. We propose the conjecture that all symbolic powers of the edge ideal of a cochordal graph are componentwise linear. This conjecture is verified for some families of cochordal graphs, including complements of block graphs and complements of proper interval graphs. As a corollary, Minh's conjecture is established for such families. Moreover, we show that $I(G)^{(2)}$ is componentwise linear, for any cochordal graph $G$.

The $\text{v}$-function of powers of sums of ideals

Let $K$ be a field, $I\subset R=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ and $J\subset T=K[y_1,\dots,y_m]$ be graded ideals. Set $S=R\otimes_KT$ and let $L=IS+JS$. The behaviour of the $\text{v}$-function $\text{v}(L^k)$ in terms of the $\text{v}$-functions $\text{v}(I^k)$ and $\text{v}(J^k)$ is investigated. When $I$ and $J$ are monomial ideals, we describe $\text{v}(L^k)$, giving an explicit formula involving $\text{v}(I^k)$ and $\text{v}(J^k)$.

The canonical trace of Cohen-Macaulay algebras of codimension 2

In the present paper, we investigate a conjecture of Jürgen Herzog. Let $S$ be a local regular ring with residue field $K$ or a positively graded $K$-algebra, $I\subset S$ be a perfect ideal of grade two, and let $R=S/I$ with canonical module $ω_R$. Herzog conjectured that the canonical trace $\text{tr}(ω_R)$ is obtained by specialization from the generic case of maximal minors. We prove this conjecture in several cases, and present a criterion that guarantees that the canonical trace specializes under some additional assumptions. As the final conclusion of all of our results, we classify the nearly Gorenstein monomial ideals of height two.

Mapping cones of monomial ideals over exterior algebras

Let $K$ be a field, $V$ a finite dimensional $K$-vector space and $E$ the exterior algebra of $V$. We analyze iterated mapping cone over $E$. If $I$ is a monomial ideal of $E$ with linear quotients, we show that the mapping cone construction yields a minimal graded free resolution $F$ of $I$ via the Cartan complex. Moreover, we provide an explicit description of the differentials in $F$ when the ideal $I$ has a regular decomposition function. Finally, we get a formula for the graded Betti numbers of a new class of monomial ideals including the class of strongly stable ideals.

Macaulay's theorem for vector-spread algebras

Let $S=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the standard graded polynomial ring, with $K$ a field, and let ${\bf t}=(t_1,\ldots,t_{d-1})\in{\mathbb{Z}}_{\ge 0}^{d-1}$, $d\ge 2$, be a $(d-1)$-tuple whose entries are non negative integers. To a ${\bf t}$-spread ideal $I$ in $S$, we associate a unique $f_{\bf t}$-vector and we prove that if $I$ is ${\bf t}$-spread strongly stable, then there exists a unique ${\bf t}$-spread lex ideal which shares the same $f_{\bf t}$-vector of $I$ via the combinatorics of the ${\bf t}$-spread shadows of special sets of monomials of $S$. Moreover, we characterize the possible $f_{\bf t}$-vectors of ${\bf t}$-vector spread strongly stable ideals generalizing the well-known theorems of Macaulay and Kruskal-Katona. Finally, we prove that among all ${\bf t}$-spread strongly stable ideals with the same $f_{\bf t}$-vector, the ${\bf t}$-spread lex ideals have the largest Betti numbers.

Projective dimension and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of t-spread ideals

We study some algebraic invariants of $t$-spread ideals, $t\ge 1$, such as the projective dimension and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, by means of well-known graded resolutions. We state upper bounds for these invariants and, furthermore, we identify a special class of t-spread ideals for which such bounds are optimal.

Matching powers of monomial ideals and edge ideals of weighted oriented graphs

We introduce the concept of matching powers of monomial ideals. Let $I$ be a monomial ideal of $S=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$, with $K$ a field. The $k$th matching power of $I$ is the monomial ideal $I^{[k]}$ generated by the products $u_1\cdots u_k$ where $u_1,\dots,u_k$ is a monomial regular sequence contained in $I$. This concept naturally generalizes that of squarefree powers of squarefree monomial ideals. We study depth and regularity functions of matching powers of monomial ideals and edge ideals of weighted oriented graphs. We show that the last nonvanishing power of a quadratic monomial ideal is always polymatroidal and thus has a linear resolution. When $I$ is a non-quadratic edge ideal of a weighted oriented forest, we characterize when $I^{[k]}$ has a linear resolution.

Matchings, Squarefree Powers and Betti Splittings

Let $G$ be a finite simple graph and let $I(G)$ be its edge ideal. In this article, we deeply investigate the squarefree powers of $I(G)$ by means of Betti splittings. When $G$ is a forest, it is shown that the normalized depth function of $I(G)$ is non-increasing. Furthermore, we compute explicitly the regularity function of squarefree powers of $I(G)$ with $G$ a forest, confirming a conjecture of Erey and Hibi.

Cohen-Macaulayness of vertex splittable monomial ideals

In this paper, we give a new criterion for the Cohen-Macaulayness of vertex splittable ideals, a family of monomial ideals recently introduced by Moradi and Khosh-Ahang. Our result relies on a Betti splitting of the ideal and provides an inductive way of checking the Cohen-Macaulay property. As a result, we obtain characterizations for Gorenstein, level and pseudo-Gorenstein vertex splittable ideals. Furthermore, we provide new and simpler combinatorial proofs of known Cohen-Macaulay criteria for several families of monomial ideals, such as (vector-spread) strongly stable ideals and (componentwise) polymatroidals. Finally, we characterize the family of bi-Cohen-Macaulay graphs by the novel criterion for the Cohen-Macaulayness of vertex splittable ideals.

Ideals and their Fitting ideals

For an ideal $I$ in a Noetherian ring $R$, the Fitting ideals $\textrm{Fitt}_j(I)$ are studied. We discuss the question of when $\textrm{Fitt}_j(I)=I$ or $\sqrt{\textrm{Fitt}_j(I)}=\sqrt{I}$ for some $j$. A classical case is the Hilbert-Burch theorem when $j=1$ and $I$ is a perfect ideal of grade $2$ in a local ring.
