Matching Powers: Macaulay2 Package

We introduce the Macaulay2 package MatchingPowers. It allows to compute and manipulate the matching powers of a monomial ideal. The basic theory of matching powers is explained and the main features of the package are presented.

Asymptotic behaviour of the $\text{v}$-number of homogeneous ideals

Let $I$ be a graded ideal of a standard graded polynomial ring $S$ with coefficients in a field $K$. The asymptotic behaviour of the $\text{v}$-number of the powers of $I$ is investigated. Natural lower and upper bounds which are linear functions in $k$ are determined for $\text{v}(I^k)$. We call $\text{v}(I^k)$ the $\text{v}$-function of $I$. We prove that $\text{v}(I^k)$ is a linear function in $k$ for $k$ large enough, of the form $\text{v}(I^k)=α(I)k+b$, where $α(I)$ is the initial degree of $I$, and $b\in\mathbb{Z}$ is a suitable integer. For this aim, we construct new blowup algebras associated to graded ideals. Finally, for a monomial ideal in two variables, we compute explicitly its $\text{v}$-function.

Simon Conjecture and the $\text{v}$-number of monomial ideals

Let $I\subset S$ be a graded ideal of a standard graded polynomial ring $S$ with coefficients in a field $K$, and let $\text{v}(I)$ be the $\text{v}$-number of $I$. In previous work, we showed that for any graded ideal $I\subset S$ generated in a single degree, then $\text{v}(I^k)=α(I)k+b$, for all $k\gg0$, where $α(I)$ is the initial degree of $I$ and $b$ is a suitable integer. In the present paper, using polarization, we extend Simon conjecture to any monomial ideal. As a consequence, if Simon conjecture holds, and all powers of $I$ have linear quotients, then $b\in\{-1,0\}$. This fact suggest that if $I$ is an equigenerated monomial ideal with linear powers, then $\text{v}(I^k)=α(I)k-1$, for all $k\ge1$. We verify this conjecture for monomial ideals with linear powers having $\text{depth}S/I=0$, edge ideals with linear resolution, polymatroidal ideals, and Hibi ideals.

Homological Shift Ideals: Macaulay2 Package

We introduce the Macaulay2 package HomologicalShiftIdeals. It allows to compute the homological shift ideals of a monomial ideal, and to check the homological shift properties, including having linear resolution, having linear quotients, or being polymatroidal. The theory behind these concepts is explained and the main features of the package are presented.

The eventual shape of the Betti table of $\mathfrak{m}^kM$

Let $S$ be the polynomial ring over a field $K$ in a finite set of variables, and let $ \mathfrak{m}$ be the graded maximal ideal of $S$. It is known that for a finitely generated graded $S$-module $M$ and all integers $k\gg 0$, the module $ \mathfrak{m}^kM$ is componentwise linear. For large $k$ we describe the pattern of the Betti table of $ \mathfrak{m}^kM$ when $\mathrm{char}(K)=0$ and $M$ is a submodule of a finitely generated graded free $S$-module. Moreover, we show that for any $k\gg 0$, $ \mathfrak{m}^kI$ has linear quotients if $I$ is a monomial ideal.

Very well-covered graphs via the Rees algebra

A very well-covered graph is a well-covered graph without isolated vertices such that the size of its minimal vertex covers is half of the number of vertices. If $G$ is a Cohen-Macaulay very well-covered graph, we deeply investigate some algebraic properties of the cover ideal of $G$ via the Rees algebra associated to the ideal.

The toric ring of one dimensional simplicial complexes

Let $Δ$ be a 1-dimensional simplicial complex. Then $Δ$ may be identified with a finite simple graph $G$. In this article, we investigate the toric ring $R_G$ of $G$. All graphs $G$ such that $R_G$ is a normal domain are classified. For such a graph, we determine the set $\mathcal{P}_G$ of height one monomial prime ideals of $R_G$. In the bipartite case, and in the case of whiskered cycles, this set is explicitly described. As a consequence, we determine the canonical class $[ω_{R_G}]$ and characterize the Gorenstein property of $R_G$. For a bipartite graph $G$, we show that $R_G$ is Gorenstein if and only if $G$ is unmixed. For a subclass of non-bipartite graphs $G$, which includes whiskered cycles, $R_G$ is Gorenstein if and only if $G$ is unmixed and has an odd number of vertices. Finally, it is proved that $R_G$ is a pseudo-Gorenstein ring if $G$ is an odd cycle.

Behaviour of the normalized depth function

Let $I\subset S=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be a squarefree monomial ideal, $K$ a field. The $k$th squarefree power $I^{[k]}$ of $I$ is the monomial ideal of $S$ generated by all squarefree monomials belonging to $I^k$. The biggest integer $k$ such that $I^{[k]}\ne(0)$ is called the monomial grade of $I$ and it is denoted by $ν(I)$. Let $d_k$ be the minimum degree of the monomials belonging to $I^{[k]}$. Then, $\text{depth}(S/I^{[k]})\ge d_k-1$ for all $1\le k\leν(I)$. The normalized depth function of $I$ is defined as $g_{I}(k)=\text{depth}(S/I^{[k]})-(d_k-1)$, $1\le k\leν(I)$. It is expected that $g_I(k)$ is a non-increasing function for any $I$. In this article we study the behaviour of $g_{I}(k)$ under various operations on monomial ideals. Our main result characterizes all cochordal graphs $G$ such that for the edge ideal $I(G)$ of $G$ we have $g_{I(G)}(1)=0$. They are precisely all cochordal graphs $G$ whose complementary graph $G^c$ is connected and has a cut vertex. As a far-reaching application, for given integers $1\le s<m$ we construct a graph $G$ such that $ν(I(G))=m$ and $g_{I(G)}(k)=0$ if and only if $k=s+1,\dots,m$. Finally, we show that any non-increasing function of non-negative integers is the normalized depth function of some squarefree monomial ideal.

Very well-covered graphs by Betti splittings

A very well-covered graph is an unmixed graph without isolated vertices such that the height of its edge ideal is half of the number of vertices. We study these graphs by means of Betti splittings and mapping cone constructions. We show that the cover ideals of Cohen-Macaulay very well-covered graphs are splittable. As a consequence, we compute explicitly the minimal graded free resolution of the cover ideals of such a class of graphs and prove that these graphs have homological linear quotients. Finally, we conjecture the same is true for each power of the cover ideal of a Cohen-Macaulay very well-covered graph, and settle it in the bipartite case.

The canonical trace of determinantal rings

We compute the canonical trace of generic determinantal rings and provide a sufficient condition for the trace to specialize. As an application we determine the canonical trace $\mbox{tr}(ω_R)$ of a Cohen-Macaulay ring $R$ of codimension two, which is generically Gorenstein. It is shown that if the defining ideal $I$ of $R$ is generated by $n$ elements, then $\mbox{tr}(ω_R)$ is generated by the $(n-2)$-minors of the Hilbert-Burch matrix of $I$.

Dirac's theorem and multigraded syzygies

Let $G$ be a simple finite graph. A famous theorem of Dirac says that $G$ is chordal if and only if $G$ admits a perfect elimination order. It is known by Fröberg that the edge ideal $I(G)$ of $G$ has a linear resolution if and only if the complementary graph $G^c$ of $G$ is chordal. In this article, we discuss some algebraic consequences of Dirac's theorem in the theory of homological shift ideals of edge ideals. Recall that if $I$ is a monomial ideal, $\mbox{HS}_k(I)$ is the monomial ideal generated by the $k$th multigraded shifts of $I$. We prove that $\mbox{HS}_1(I)$ has linear quotients, for any monomial ideal $I$ with linear quotients generated in a single degree. For and edge ideal $I(G)$ with linear quotients, it is not true that $\mbox{HS}_k(I(G))$ has linear quotients for all $k\ge0$. On the other hand, if $G^c$ is a proper interval graph or a forest, we prove that this is the case. Finally, we discuss a conjecture of Bandari, Bayati and Herzog that predicts that if $I$ is polymatroidal, $\mbox{HS}_k(I)$ is polymatroidal too, for all $k\ge0$. We are able to prove that this conjecture holds for all polymatroidal ideals generated in degree two.

Linear resolutions of $t$-spread lexsegment ideals via Betti splittings

Let $S=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be a polynomial ring in $n$ variables with coefficients over a field $K$. A $t$-spread lexsegment ideal $I$ of $S$ is a monomial ideal generated by a $t$-spread lexsegment set. We determine all $t$-spread lexsegment ideals with linear resolution by means of Betti splittings. As applications we provide formulas for the Betti numbers of such a class of ideals and furthermore we characterize all incompletely $t$-spread lexsegment ideals with linear quotients.

Vector-spread monomial ideals and Eliahou-Kervaire type resolutions

We introduce the class of vector-spread monomial ideals. This notion generalizes that of $t$-spread ideals introduced by Ene, Herzog and Qureshi. In particular, we focus on vector-spread strongly stable ideals, we compute their Koszul cycles and describe their minimal free resolution. As a consequence the graded Betti numbers and the Poincaré series are determined. Finally, we consider a generalization of algebraic shifting theory for such a class of ideals.

A note on minimal resolutions of vector-spread Borel ideals

We consider vector-spread Borel ideals. We show that these ideals have linear quotients and thereby we determine the graded Betti numbers and the bigraded Poincaré series. A characterization of the extremal Betti numbers of such a class of ideals is given. Finally, we classify all Cohen-Macaulay vector-spread Borel ideals.

Shifting operations and completely $t$-spread lexsegment ideals

In this paper we introduce the concepts of arbitrary $t$-spread lexsegments and of arbitrary $t$-spread lexsegment ideals with $t$ a positive integer. These concepts are a natural generalization of arbitrary lexsegments and arbitrary lexsegment ideals. An ideal generated by an arbitrary $t$-spread lexsegment is called completely $t$-spread lexsegment if it is equal to the intersection of an initial $t$-spread lexsegment ideal and of a final $t$-spread lexsegment ideal. We study the class of arbitrary $t$-spread lexsegment ideals. In particular, we characterize all completely $t$-spread lexsegment ideals. Moreover, we classify all completely $t$-spread lexsegment ideals with a linear resolution.

A numerical characterization of the extremal Betti numbers of $t$-spread strongly stable Ideals

Let $K$ be a field and let $S=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be a standard polynomial ring over a field $K$. We characterize the extremal Betti numbers, values as well positions, of a $t$-spread strongly stable ideal of $S$. Our approach is constructive. Indeed, given some positive integers $a_1,\dots,a_r$ and some pairs of positive integers $(k_1,\ell_1),\dots,(k_r,\ell_r)$, we are able to determine under which conditions there exist a $t$-spread strongly stable ideal $I$ of $S$ with $β_{k_i, k_i\ell_i}(I)=a_i$, $i=1, \ldots, r$, as extremal Betti numbers, and then to construct it.
