Appearance of Boulware-Deser ghost in bigravity with doubly coupled matter

We discuss the ghost freeness in the case when we add matter coupled to two metrics to the ghost-free bigravity. In this paper we show that the Boulware-Deser ghost generally revives in the presence of doubly coupled matter and that ghost freeness strongly restricts the model of kinetically doubly coupled matter. This result may anticipate difficulties in the attempt to derive the ghost-free bigravity as a low-energy effective theory, starting with a model applicable at high energies.

Ghosts in classes of non-local gravity

We consider a class of non-local gravity theories where the Lagrangian is a function of powers of the inverse d'Alembertian operator acting on the Ricci scalar. We take an approach in which the non-local Lagrangian is made local by introducing auxiliary scalar fields, and study the degrees of freedom of the localized Lagrangian. We find that among the auxiliary scalar fields introduced, some of them are always ghost-like. That is, in the Einstein frame they develop a negative kinetic term. Because of this, except for a particular case already known in the literature, in general, it is not clear how to quantize these models and how to interpret this theory in the light of standard field theory.

Cosmological Scaling Solutions for Multiple Scalar Fields

The general k-essence Lagrangian for the existence of cosmological scaling solutions is derived in the presence of multiple scalar fields coupled to a barotropic perfect fluid. In addition to the scaling fixed point associated with the dynamics during the radiation and matter eras, we also obtain a scalar-field dominated solution relevant to dark energy and discuss the stability of them in the two-field set-up. We apply our general results to a model of two canonical fields with coupled exponential potentials arising in string theory. Depending on model parameters and initial conditions, we show that the scaling matter-dominated epochs followed by an attractor with cosmic acceleration can be realized with/without the couplings to scalar fields. The different types of scaling solutions can be distinguished from each other by the evolution of the dark energy equation of state from high-redshifts to today.

Viable cosmology in bimetric theory

We study cosmological perturbations in bimetric theory with two fluids each of which is coupled to one of the two metrics. Focusing on a healthy branch of background solutions, we clarify the stability of the cosmological perturbations. For this purpose, we extend the condition for the absence of the so-called Higuchi ghost, and show that the condition is guaranteed to be satisfied on the healthy branch. We also calculate the squared propagation speeds of perturbations and derive the conditions for the absence of the gradient instability. To avoid the gradient instability, we find that the model parameters are weakly constrained.

Generalized quasi-dilaton theory

Recently the first example of a unitary theory of Lorentz-invariant massive gravity allowing for stable self-accelerating de Sitter solutions was found, extending the quasidilaton theory. In this paper we further generalize this new action for the quasidilaton field by introducing general Lagrangian terms which are consistent with the quasidilaton symmetry while leading to second order equations of motion. We find that the structure of the theory, compared to the simplest stable example, does not change on introducing these new terms.

On the cosmology of massive gravity

We present a review of cosmological solutions in non-linear massive gravity, focusing on the stability of perturbations. Although homogeneous and isotropic solutions have been found, these are now known to suffer from either Higuchi ghost or a new non-linear ghost instability. We discuss two approaches to alleviate this issue. By relaxing the symmetry of the background by e.g. breaking isotropy in the hidden sector, it is possible to accommodate a stable cosmological solution. Alternatively, extending the theory to allow for new dynamical degrees of freedom can also remove the conditions which lead to the instability. As examples for this case, we study the stability of self-accelerating solutions in the quasi-dilatonic extension and generic cosmological solutions in the varying mass extension. While the quasi-dilaton case turns out to be unstable, the varying mass case allows stable regimes of parameters. Viable self-accelerating solutions in the varying mass theory yet remain to be found.

Planck constraints on single-field inflation

We place observational constraints on slow-variation single-field inflationary models by carrying out the cosmological Monte Carlo simulation with the recent data of Planck combined with the WMAP large-angle polarization, baryon acoustic oscillations, and ACT/SPT temperature data. Our analysis covers a wide variety of models with second-order equations of motion-- including potential-driven slow-roll inflation, non-minimally coupled models, running kinetic couplings, Brans-Dicke theories, potential-driven Galileon inflation, field-derivative couplings to the Einstein tensor, and k-inflation. In the presence of running kinetic exponential couplings, covariant Galileon terms, and field-derivative couplings, the tensor-to-scalar ratio of the self-coupling potential gets smaller relative to that in standard slow-roll inflation, but the models lie outside the 68 % CL observational contour. We also show that k-inflation models can be tightly constrained by adding the bounds from the scalar non-Gaussianities. The small-field inflationary models with asymptotic flat Einstein-frame potentials in the regime phi >> M_{pl} generally fit the data very well. These include the models such as Kahler-moduli inflation, non-minimally coupled Higgs inflation, and inflation in Brans-Dicke theories in the presence of the potential V(phi)=3M^2 (phi-M_{pl})^2/4 with the Brans-Dicke parameter omega_{BD}<O(1) (which covers the Starobinsky's model f(R)=R+R^2/(6M^2) as a special case).

Towards consistent extension of quasidilaton massive gravity

We present the first example of a unitary theory of Lorentz-invariant massive gravity, with all degrees of freedom propagating on a strictly homogeneous and isotropic, self-accelerating de Sitter background. The theory is a simple extension of the quasidilaton theory, respecting the symmetry of the original theory but allowing for a new type of coupling between the massive graviton and the quasidilaton scalar.

Nonlinear stability of cosmological solutions in massive gravity

We investigate nonlinear stability of two classes of cosmological solutions in massive gravity: isotropic Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) solutions and anisotropic FLRW solutions. For this purpose we construct the linear cosmological perturbation theory around axisymmetric Bianchi type--I backgrounds. We then expand the background around the two classes of solutions, which are fixed points of the background evolution equation, and analyze linear perturbations on top of it. This provides a consistent truncation of nonlinear perturbations around these fixed point solutions and allows us to analyze nonlinear stability in a simple way. In particular, it is shown that isotropic FLRW solutions exhibit nonlinear ghost instability. On the other hand, anisotropic FLRW solutions are shown to be ghost-free for a range of parameters and initial conditions.

Possible existence of viable models of bi-gravity with detectable graviton oscillations by gravitational wave detectors

We discuss graviton oscillations based on the ghost free bi-gravity theory. We point out that this theory possesses a natural cosmological background solution which is very close to the case of general relativity. Furthermore, interesting parameter range of the graviton mass, which can be explored by the observations of gravitational waves, is not at all excluded by the constraint from the solar system tests. Therefore the graviton oscillation with possible inverse chirp signal would be an interesting scientific target of KAGRA, adv LIGO, adv Virgo and GEO.

Observational Constraints on Quintessence: Thawing, Tracker, and Scaling models

For two types of quintessence models having thawing and tracking properties, there exist analytic solutions for the dark energy equation of state w expressed in terms of several free parameters. We put observational bounds on the parameters in such scenarios by using the recent data of Supernovae type Ia, Cosmic Microwave Background, and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations. The observational constraints are quite different depending on whether or not the recent BAO data from BOSS are taken into account. With the BOSS data the upper bounds of today's values of w (=w_0) in thawing models is very close to -1, whereas without this data the values of w_0 away from -1 can be still allowed. The tracker equation of state w_{(0)} during the matter era is constrained to be w_{(0)}<-0.949 at 95 % confidence level even without the BOSS data, so that the tracker models with w away from -1 are severely disfavored. We also study observational constraints on scaling models in which w starts to evolve from 0 in the deep matter era and show that the transition to the equation of state close to w=-1 needs to occur at an early cosmological epoch. In the three classes of quintessence models studied in this paper, the past evolution of the Hubble parameters in the best-fit models shows only less than the 2.5 % difference compared to the LCDM.

Shapes of primordial non-Gaussianities in the Horndeski's most general scalar-tensor theories

In the Horndeski's most general scalar-tensor theories, we derive the three-point correlation function of scalar non-Gaussianities generated during single-field inflation in the presence of slow-variation corrections to the leading-order term. Unlike previous works, the resulting bispectrum is valid for any shape of non-Gaussianities. In the squeezed limit, for example, this gives rise to the same consistency relation as that derived by Maldacena in standard single-field slow-roll inflation. We estimate the shape close to the squeezed one at which the effect of the term inversely proportional to the scalar propagation speed squared begins to contribute to the bispectrum. We also show that the leading-order bispectrum can be expressed by the linear combination of two convenient bases whose shapes are highly correlated with equilateral and orthogonal types respectively. We present concrete models in which the orthogonal and enfolded shapes can dominate over the equilateral one.

Testing for dynamical dark energy models with redshift-space distortions

The red-shift space distortions in the galaxy power spectrum can be used to measure the growth rate of matter density perturbations delta_m. For dynamical dark energy models in General Relativity we provide a convenient analytic formula of f(z) sigma_8(z) written as a function of the redshift z, where f=d ln delta_m/d ln a (a is the cosmological scale factor) and sigma_8 is the rms amplitude of over-density at the scale 8 h^{-1} Mpc. Our formula can be applied to the models of imperfect fluids, quintessence, and k-essence, provided that the dark energy equation of state w does not vary significantly and that the sound speed is not much smaller than 1. We also place observational constraints on dark energy models of constant w and tracking quintessence from the recent data of red-shift space distortions.

Massive gravity: nonlinear instability of the homogeneous and isotropic universe

We argue that all homogeneous and isotropic solutions in nonlinear massive gravity are unstable. For this purpose, we study the propagating modes on a Bianchi type--I manifold. We analyze their kinetic terms and dispersion relations as the background manifold approaches the homogeneous and isotropic limit. We show that in this limit, at least one ghost always exists and that its frequency tends to vanish for large scales, meaning that it cannot be integrated out from the low energy effective theory. This ghost mode is interpreted as a leading nonlinear perturbation around a homogeneous and isotropic background.

Reheating in 3-form inflation

We consider the 3-form field, which has been considered as a candidate for realizing inflation, coupled to a scalar field which models the relativistic matter particles produced during the reheating epoch. We have investigated the stability conditions for this theory and found that introducing such a coupling does not lead to any ghosts or Laplacian instabilities. We have also investigated the reheating temperature and the production of particles due to parametric resonances. We have found that this process is more efficient in this theory compared to the result of the standard-scalar-field inflationary scenario.

Cosmological constraints for an Eddington-Born-Infeld field

We consider the Eddington-Born-Infeld (EBI) model here without assuming any cosmological constant. The EBI scalar field is supposed to play a role of both dark matter and dark energy. Different eras in cosmology are reconstructed for the model. A comparison is drawn with $Λ$CDM model using Supernova Ia, WMAP7 and BAO data. It seems that the EBI field in this form does not give good fit to observational data in comparison to the $Λ$CDM model.

Fab 5: Noncanonical Kinetic Gravity, Self Tuning, and Cosmic Acceleration

We investigate circumstances under which one can generalize Horndeski's most general scalar-tensor theory of gravity. Specifically we demonstrate that a nonlinear combination of purely kinetic gravity terms can give rise to an accelerating universe without the addition of extra propagating degrees of freedom on cosmological backgrounds, and exhibit self tuning to bring a large cosmological constant under control. This nonlinear approach leads to new properties that may be instructive for exploring the behaviors of gravity.

Stability of the 3-form field during inflation

We consider the minimally coupled 3-form field which has been considered as a candidate to realize inflation. We have studied the conditions to avoid ghosts and Laplacian instabilities and found that some classes of potentials, e.g. the Mexican-hat one, will in general be unstable. We then propose other classes of potentials which are instead free from any instability, drive a long-enough slow-roll regime followed by an oscillatory epoch, and as a consequence, can provide successful inflation. Finally, we also provide stable potentials which lead to a small enough propagation speed for the scalar perturbations, giving a possibility for these models to produce non-Gaussianities.
