Observational constraints on dark energy with a fast varying equation of state

We place observational constraints on models with the late-time cosmic acceleration based on a number of parametrizations allowing fast transitions for the equation of state of dark energy. In addition to the model of Linder and Huterer where the dark energy equation of state $w$ monotonically grows or decreases in time, we propose two new parametrizations in which $w$ has an extremum. We carry out the likelihood analysis with the three parametrizations by using the observational data of supernovae type Ia, cosmic microwave background, and baryon acoustic oscillations. Although the transient cosmic acceleration models with fast transitions can give rise to the total chi square smaller than that in the $Λ$-Cold-Dark-Matter ($Λ$CDM) model, these models are not favored over $Λ$CDM when one uses the Akaike information criterion which penalizes the extra degrees of freedom present in the parametrizations.

Vainshtein mechanism in second-order scalar-tensor theories

In second-order scalar-tensor theories we study how the Vainshtein mechanism works in a spherically symmetric background with a matter source. In the presence of the field coupling $F(ϕ)=e^{-2Qϕ}$ with the Ricci scalar $R$ we generally derive the Vainshtein radius within which the General Relativistic behavior is recovered even for the coupling $Q$ of the order of unity. Our analysis covers the models such as the extended Galileon and Brans-Dicke theories with a dilatonic field self-interaction. We show that, if these models are responsible for the cosmic acceleration today, the corrections to gravitational potentials are generally small enough to be compatible with local gravity constraints.

Cosmological constraints on extended Galileon models

The extended Galileon models possess tracker solutions with de Sitter attractors along which the dark energy equation of state is constant during the matter-dominated epoch, i.e. w_DE = -1-s, where s is a positive constant. Even with this phantom equation of state there are viable parameter spaces in which the ghosts and Laplacian instabilities are absent. Using the observational data of the supernovae type Ia, the cosmic microwave background (CMB), and baryon acoustic oscillations, we place constraints on the tracker solutions at the background level and find that the parameter s is constrained to be s=0.034 (-0.034,+0.327) (95% CL) in the flat Universe. In order to break the degeneracy between the models we also study the evolution of cosmological density perturbations relevant to the large-scale structure (LSS) and the Integrated-Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect in CMB. We show that, depending on the model parameters, the LSS and the ISW effect is either positively or negatively correlated. It is then possible to constrain viable parameter spaces further from the observational data of the ISW-LSS cross-correlation as well as from the matter power spectrum.

Effective gravitational couplings for cosmological perturbations in the most general scalar-tensor theories with second-order field equations

In the Horndeski's most general scalar-tensor theories the equations of scalar density perturbations are derived in the presence of non-relativistic matter minimally coupled to gravity. Under a quasi-static approximation on sub-horizon scales we obtain the effective gravitational coupling $G_{eff}$ associated with the growth rate of matter perturbations as well as the effective gravitational potential $Φ_{eff}$ relevant to the deviation of light rays. We then apply our formulas to a number of modified gravitational models of dark energy--such as those based on f(R) theories, Brans-Dicke theories, kinetic gravity braidings, covariant Galileons, and field derivative couplings with the Einstein tensor. Our results are useful to test the large-distance modification of gravity from the future high-precision observations of large-scale structure, weak lensing, and cosmic microwave background.

Conditions for the cosmological viability of the most general scalar-tensor theories and their applications to extended Galileon dark energy models

In the Horndeski's most general scalar-tensor theories with second-order field equations, we derive the conditions for the avoidance of ghosts and Laplacian instabilities associated with scalar, tensor, and vector perturbations in the presence of two perfect fluids on the flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background. Our general results are useful for the construction of theoretically consistent models of dark energy. We apply our formulas to extended Galileon models in which a tracker solution with an equation of state smaller than -1 is present. We clarify the allowed parameter space in which the ghosts and Laplacian instabilities are absent and we numerically confirm that such models are indeed cosmologically viable.

Generalized Galileon cosmology

We study the cosmology of a generalized Galileon field $ϕ$ with five covariant Lagrangians in which $ϕ$ is replaced by general scalar functions $f_{i}(ϕ)$ (i=1,...,5). For these theories, the equations of motion remain at second-order in time derivatives. We restrict the functional forms of $f_{i}(ϕ)$ from the demand to obtain de Sitter solutions responsible for dark energy. There are two possible choices for power-law functions $f_{i}(ϕ)$, depending on whether the coupling $F(ϕ)$ with the Ricci scalar $R$ is independent of $ϕ$ or depends on $ϕ$. The former corresponds to the covariant Galileon theory that respects the Galilean symmetry in the Minkowski space-time. For generalized Galileon theories we derive the conditions for the avoidance of ghosts and Laplacian instabilities associated with scalar and tensor perturbations as well as the condition for the stability of de Sitter solutions. We also carry out detailed analytic and numerical study for the cosmological dynamics in those theories.

Inflationary non-Gaussianities in the most general second-order scalar-tensor theories

For very general scalar-field theories in which the equations of motion are at second-order, we evaluate the three-point correlation function of primordial scalar perturbations generated during inflation. We show that the shape of non-Gaussianities is well approximated by the equilateral type. The equilateral non-linear parameter f_NL^equil is derived on the quasi de Sitter background where the slow-variation parameters are much smaller than unity. We apply our formula for f_NL^equil to a number of single-field models of inflation--such as k-inflation, k-inflation with Galileon terms, potential-driven Galileon inflation, nonminimal coupling models (including field-derivative coupling models), and Gauss-Bonnet gravity.

Chaotic inflation in modified gravitational theories

We study chaotic inflation in the context of modified gravitational theories. Our analysis covers models based on (i) a field coupling $ω(ϕ)$ with the kinetic energy $X$ and a nonmimimal coupling $ζϕ^{2} R/2$ with a Ricci scalar $R$, (ii) Brans-Dicke (BD) theories, (iii) Gauss-Bonnet (GB) gravity, and (iv) gravity with a Galileon correction. Dilatonic coupling with the kinetic energy and/or negative nonminimal coupling are shown to lead to compatibility with observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropies for the self-coupling inflaton potential $V(ϕ)=λϕ^{4}/4$. BD theory with a quadratic inflaton potential, which covers Starobinsky's $f(R)$ model $f(R)=R+R^{2}/(6M^{2})$ with the BD parameter $ω_{BD}=0$, gives rise to a smaller tensor-to-scalar ratio for decreasing $ω_{BD}$. In the presence of a GB term coupled to the field $ϕ$, we express the scalar/tensor spectral indices $n_{s}$ and $n_{t}$ as well as the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ in terms of two slow-roll parameters and place bounds on the strength of the GB coupling from the joint data analysis of WMAP 7yr combined with other observations. We also study the Galileon-like self-interaction $Φ(ϕ) X \squareϕ$ with exponential coupling $Φ(ϕ) \propto e^{μϕ}$. Using a CMB likelihood analysis we put bounds on the strength of the Galileon coupling and show that the self coupling potential can in fact be made compatible with observations in the presence of the exponential coupling with $μ>0$.

Linear growth of matter density perturbations in f(R,G) theories

We derive the equation of matter density perturbations on sub-horizon scales around a flat Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker background for the general Lagrangian density $f(R,\GB)$ that is a function of a Ricci scalar $R$ and a Gauss-Bonnet term $\GB$. We find that the effective gravitational constant generically scales as distance squared at small distances. The effect of this diminishing of the gravitational constant might be important in the gravitational dynamics of cosmic objects such as galaxies, which can be in principle tested by observations. We also provide the general expressions for the effective anisotropic stress, which is useful to constrain modified gravity models from observations of large-scale structure and weak lensing. We also find that there is a special class of theories which evade this unusual behaviour and that the condition to belong to this special class is exactly the same as the one for not having super-luminal modes with propagation speed proportional to their wavenumber.

Primordial non-Gaussianities in general modified gravitational models of inflation

We compute the three-point correlation function of primordial scalar density perturbations in a general single-field inflationary scenario, where a scalar field phi has a direct coupling with the Ricci scalar R and the Gauss-Bonnet term GB. Our analysis also covers the models in which the Lagrangian includes a function non-linear in the field kinetic energy X=-(nabla phi)^2/2, and a Galileon-type field self-interaction G(phi, X)*(Box phi), where G is a function of phi and X. We provide a general analytic formula for the equilateral non-Gaussianity parameter f_{NL}^{equil} associated with the bispectrum of curvature perturbations. A quasi de Sitter approximation in terms of slow-variation parameters allows us to derive a simplified form of f_{NL}^{equil} convenient to constrain various inflation models observationally. If the propagation speed of the scalar perturbations is much smaller than the speed of light, the Gauss-Bonnet term as well as the Galileon-type field self-interaction can give rise to large non-Gaussianities testable in future observations. We also show that, in Brans-Dicke theory with a field potential (including f(R) gravity), f_{NL}^{equil} is of the order of slow-roll parameters as in standard inflation driven by a minimally coupled scalar field.

Matter perturbations in Galileon cosmology

We study the evolution of matter density perturbations in Galileon cosmology where the late-time cosmic acceleration can be realized by a field kinetic energy. We obtain full perturbation equations at linear order in the presence of five covariant Lagrangians ${cal L}_i$ ($i=1,...,5$) satisfying a Galilean symmetry in the flat space-time. The equations for a matter perturbation as well as an effective gravitational potential are derived under a quasi-static approximation on sub-horizon scales. This approximation can reproduce full numerical solutions with high accuracy for the wavelengths relevant to large-scale structures. For the model parameters constrained by the background expansion history of the Universe the growth rate of matter perturbations is larger than that in the LCDM model, with the growth index $gamma$ today typically smaller than 0.4. We also find that, even on very large scales associated with the Integrated-Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect in Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropies, the effective gravitational potential exhibits a temporal growth during the transition from the matter era to the epoch of cosmic acceleration. These properties are useful to distinguish the Galileon model from the LCDM in future high-precision observations.

Stability of Schwarzschild-like solutions in f(R,G) gravity models

We study linear metric perturbations around a spherically symmetric static spacetime for general f(R,G) theories, where R is the Ricci scalar and G is the Gauss-Bonnet term. We find that unless the determinant of the Hessian of f(R,G) is zero, even-type perturbations have a ghost for any multi-pole mode. In order for these theories to be plausible alternatives to General Relativity, the theory should satisfy the condition that the ghost is massive enough to effectively decouple from the other fields. We study the requirement on the form of f(R,G) which satisfies this condition. We also classify the number of propagating modes both for the odd-type and the even-type perturbations and derive the propagation speeds for each mode.

Observational constraints on Galileon cosmology

We study the cosmology of a covariant Galileon field with five covariant Lagrangians and confront this theory with the most recent cosmological probes: the type Ia supernovae data (Constitution and Union2 sets), cosmic microwave background (WMAP7) and the baryon acoustic oscillations (SDSS7). In the Galileon cosmology with a late-time de Sitter attractor, there is a tracker that attracts solutions with different initial conditions to a common trajectory. Including the cosmic curvature K, we place observational constraints on two distinct cases: (i) the tracker, and (ii) the generic solutions to the equations of motion. We find that the tracker solution can be consistent with the individual observational data, but it is disfavored by the combined data analysis. The generic solutions fare quite well when a non-zero curvature parameter is taken into account, but the Akaike and Bayesian information criteria show that they are not particularly favored over the LCDM model.

Cosmology of a covariant Galileon field

We study the cosmology of a covariant scalar field respecting a Galilean symmetry in flat space-time. We show the existence of a tracker solution that finally approaches a de Sitter fixed point responsible for cosmic acceleration today. The viable region of model parameters is clarified by deriving conditions under which ghosts and Laplacian instabilities of scalar and tensor perturbations are absent. The field equation of state exhibits a peculiar phantom-like behavior along the tracker, which allows a possibility to observationally distinguish the Galileon gravity from the Lambda-CDM model.

Generalized Brans-Dicke theories

In Brans-Dicke theory a non-linear self interaction of a scalar field allows a possibility of realizing the late-time cosmic acceleration, while recovering the General Relativistic behavior at early cosmological epochs. We extend this to more general modified gravitational theories in which a de Sitter solution for dark energy exists without using a field potential. We derive a condition for the stability of the de Sitter point and study the background cosmological dynamics of such theories. We also restrict the allowed region of model parameters from the demand for the avoidance of ghosts and instabilities. A peculiar evolution of the field propagation speed allows us to distinguish those theories from the LCDM model.

Inevitable ghost and the degrees of freedom in f(R,G) gravity

The study of linear perturbation theory for general functions of the Ricci and Gauss-Bonnet scalars is done over an empty anisotropic universe, i.e. the Kasner-type background, in order to show that an anisotropic background in general has ghost degrees of freedom, which are absent on Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) backgrounds. The study of the scalar perturbation reveals that on this background the number of independent propagating degrees of freedom is four and reduces to three on FLRW backgrounds, as one mode becomes highly massive to decouple from the physical spectrum. When this mode remains physical, there is inevitably a ghost mode.

f(R) theories

Over the past decade, f(R) theories have been extensively studied as one of the simplest modifications to General Relativity. In this article we review various applications of f(R) theories to cosmology and gravity - such as inflation, dark energy, local gravity constraints, cosmological perturbations, and spherically symmetric solutions in weak and strong gravitational backgrounds. We present a number of ways to distinguish those theories from General Relativity observationally and experimentally. We also discuss the extension to other modified gravity theories such as Brans-Dicke theory and Gauss-Bonnet gravity, and address models that can satisfy both cosmological and local gravity constraints.

Density perturbations in general modified gravitational theories

We derive the equations of linear cosmological perturbations for the general Lagrangian density $f (R,ϕ, X)/2+L_c$, where $R$ is a Ricci scalar, $ϕ$ is a scalar field, and $X=-(\nabla ϕ)^2/2$ is a field kinetic energy. We take into account a nonlinear self-interaction term $L_c$ recently studied in the context of "Galileon" cosmology, which keeps the field equations at second order. Taking into account a scalar-field mass explicitly, the equations of matter density perturbations and gravitational potentials are obtained under a quasi-static approximation on sub-horizon scales. We also derive conditions for the avoidance of ghosts and Laplacian instabilities associated with propagation speeds. Our analysis includes most of modified gravity models of dark energy proposed in literature and thus it is convenient to test the viability of such models from both theoretical and observational points of view.
