Random matrix ensembles and integrable differential identities

Integrable differential identities, together with ensemble-specific initial conditions, provide an effective approach for the characterisation of relevant observables and state functions in random matrix theory. We develop this approach for the unitary and orthogonal ensembles. In particular, we focus on a reduction where the probability measure is induced by a Hamiltonian expressed as a formal series of even interaction terms. We show that the order parameters for the unitary ensemble, that is associated with the Volterra lattice, provide a solution of the modified KP equation. The analogous reduction for the orthogonal ensemble, associated with the Pfaff lattice, leads to a new integrable chain. A key step for the calculation of order parameters for the orthogonal ensemble is the evaluation of the initial condition by using a map from orthogonal to skew-orthogonal polynomials. The thermodynamic limit leads to an integrable system (a chain for the orthogonal ensemble) of hydrodynamic type. Intriguingly, we find that the solution to the initial value problem for both the discrete system and its continuum limit are given by the very same semi-discrete dynamical chain.

Complete integrability and equilibrium thermodynamics of biaxial nematic systems with discrete orientational degrees of freedom

We study a discrete version of a biaxial nematic liquid crystal model with external fields via an approach based on the solution of differential identities for the partition function. In the thermodynamic limit, we derive the free energy of the model and the associated closed set of equations of state involving four order parameters, proving the integrability and exact solvability of the model. The equations of state are specified via a suitable representation of the orientational order parameters, which imply two-order parameter reductions in the absence of external fields. A detailed exact analysis of the equations of state reveal a rich phase diagram where isotropic versus uniaxial versus biaxial phase transitions are explicitly described, including the existence of triple and tricritical points. Results on the discrete models are qualitatively consistent with their continuum analog. This observation suggests that, in more general settings, discrete models may be used to capture and describe phenomena that also occur in the continuum for which exact equations of state in closed form are not available.

Two-dimensional reductions of the Whitham modulation system for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation

Two-dimensional reductions of the KP-Whitham system, namely the overdetermined Whitham modulation system for five dependent variables that describe the periodic solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation, are studied and characterized. Three different reductions are considered corresponding to modulations that are independent of x , independent of y , and of t (i.e., stationary), respectively. Each of these reductions still describes dynamic, two-dimensional spatial configurations since the modulated cnoidal wave generically has a nonzero speed and a nonzero slope in the x y plane. In all three of these reductions, the properties of the resulting systems of equations are studied. It is shown that the resulting reduced system is not integrable unless one enforces the compatibility of the system with all conservation of waves equations (or considers a reduction to the harmonic or soliton limit). In all cases, compatibility with conservation of waves yields a reduction in the number of dependent variables to two, three and four, respectively. As a byproduct of the stationary case, the Whitham modulation system for the Boussinesq equation is also explicitly obtained.

Symmetries and criticality of generalised van der Waals models

We consider a family of thermodynamic models such that the energy density can be expressed as an asymptotic expansion in the scale formal parameter and whose terms are suitable functions of the volume density. We examine the possibility to construct solutions for the Maxwell thermodynamic relations relying on their symmetry properties and deduce the critical properties implied in terms of the the dynamics of coexistence curves in the space of thermodynamic variables.

p-star models, mean field random networks and the heat hierarchy

We consider the mean field analog of the p-star model for homogeneous random networks, and compare its behaviour with that of the p-star model and its classical mean field approximation in the thermodynamic regime. We show that the partition function of the mean field model satisfies a sequence of partial differential equations known as the heat hierarchy, and the models connectance is obtained as a solution of a hierarchy of nonlinear viscous PDEs. In the thermodynamic limit, the leading order solution develops singularities in the space of parameters that evolve as classical shocks regularised by a viscous term. Shocks are associated with phase transitions and stable states are automatically selected consistently with the Maxwell construction. The case p = 3 is studied in detail. Monte Carlo simulations show an excellent agreement between the p-star model and its mean field analog at the macroscopic level, although significant discrepancies arise when local features are compared.

Symmetric Matrix Ensemble and Integrable Hydrodynamic Chains

The partition function of the Symmetric Matrix Ensemble is identified with the $τ-$function of a particular solution of the Pfaff Lattice. We show that in the case of even power interactions, in the thermodynamic limit, the $τ-$function corresponds to the solution of an integrable chain of hydrodynamic type. We prove that the hydrodynamic chain so obtained is diagonalisable and admits hydrodynamic reductions in Riemann invariants in an arbitrary number of components.

Thermodynamic Limit and Dispersive Regularisation in Matrix Models

We show that Hermitian matrix models support the occurrence of a new type of phase transition characterised by dispersive regularisation of the order parameter near the critical point. Using the identification of the partition function with a solution of a reduction of the Toda hierarchy, known as Volterra system, we argue that the singularity is resolved by the onset of a multi-dimensional dispersive shock of the order parameter in the space of coupling constants. This analysis explains the origin and mechanism leading to the emergence of chaotic behaviours observed in M^6 matrix models and extends its validity to even nonlinearity of arbitrary order.

An exact study of phase transitions in mean field Potts models

We construct the exact partition function of the Potts model on a complete graph subject to external fields with linear and nematic type couplings. The partition function is obtained as a solution to a linear diffusion equation and the free energy, in the thermodynamic limit, follows from its semiclassical limit. Analysis of singularities of the equations of state reveals the occurrence of phase transitions of nematic type at not zero external fields and allows for an interpretation of the phase transitions in terms of shock dynamics in the space of thermodynamics variables. The approach is shown at work in the case of a q-state model for q=3 but the method generalises to arbitrary q.

Overcoming dispersive spreading of quantum wave packets via periodic nonlinear kicking

We propose the suppression of dispersive spreading of wave packets governed by the free-space Schrödinger equation with a periodically pulsed nonlinear term. Using asymptotic analysis, we construct stroboscopically-dispersionless quantum states that are physically reminiscent of, but mathematically different from, the well-known one-soliton solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a constant (time-independent) nonlinearity. Our analytics are strongly supported by full numerical simulations. The predicted dispersionless wave packets can move with arbitrary velocity and can be realized in experiments involving ultracold atomic gases with temporally controlled interactions.

Exact equations of state for nematics

We propose a novel approach to the solution of nematic Liquid Crystal models based on the derivation of a system of nonlinear wave equations for order parameters such that the occurrence of uniaxial and biaxial phase transitions can be interpreted as the propagation of a two-dimensional shock wave in the space of thermodynamic parameters. We obtain the exact equations of state for an integrable model of biaxial nematic liquid crystals and show that the classical transition from isotropic to uniaxial phase in absence of external fields is the result of a van der Waals type phase transition, where the jump in the order parameters is a classical shock generated from a gradient catastrophe at a non-zero isotropic field. The study of the equations of state provides the first analytical description of the rich structure of nematics phase diagrams in presence of external fields.

Complete integrability of information processing by biochemical reactions

Statistical mechanics provides an effective framework to investigate information processing in biochemical reactions. Within such framework far-reaching analogies are established among (anti-) cooperative collective behaviors in chemical kinetics, (anti-)ferromagnetic spin models in statistical mechanics and operational amplifiers/flip-flops in cybernetics. The underlying modeling -- based on spin systems -- has been proved to be accurate for a wide class of systems matching classical (e.g. Michaelis--Menten, Hill, Adair) scenarios in the infinite-size approximation. However, the current research in biochemical information processing has been focusing on systems involving a relatively small number of units, where this approximation is no longer valid. Here we show that the whole statistical mechanical description of reaction kinetics can be re-formulated via a mechanical analogy -- based on completely integrable hydrodynamic-type systems of PDEs -- which provides explicit finite-size solutions, matching recently investigated phenomena (e.g. noise-induced cooperativity, stochastic bi-stability, quorum sensing). The resulting picture, successfully tested against a broad spectrum of data, constitutes a neat rationale for a numerically effective and theoretically consistent description of collective behaviors in biochemical reactions.

Integrable extended van der Waals model

Inspired by the recent developments in the study of the thermodynamics of van der Waals fluids via the theory of nonlinear conservation laws and the description of phase transitions in terms of classical (dissipative) shock waves, we propose a novel approach to the construction of multi-parameter generalisations of the van der Waals model. The theory of integrable nonlinear conservation laws still represents the inspiring framework. Starting from a macroscopic approach, a four parameter family of integrable extended van der Waals models is indeed constructed in such a way that the equation of state is a solution to an integrable nonlinear conservation law linearisable by a Cole-Hopf transformation. This family is further specified by the request that, in regime of high temperature, far from the critical region, the extended model reproduces asymptotically the standard van der Waals equation of state. We provide a detailed comparison of our extended model with two notable empirical models such as Peng-Robinson and Soave's modification of the Redlich-Kwong equations of state. We show that our extended van der Waals equation of state is compatible with both empirical models for a suitable choice of the free parameters and can be viewed as a master interpolating equation. The present approach also suggests that further generalisations can be obtained by including the class of dispersive and viscous-dispersive nonlinear conservation laws and could lead to a new type of thermodynamic phase transitions associated to nonclassical and dispersive shock waves.

Exact solution of the van der Waals model in the critical region

The celebrated van der Waals model describes simple fluids in the thermodynamic limit and predicts the existence of a critical point associated to the gas-liquid phase transition. However the behaviour of critical isotherms according to the equation of state, where a gas-liquid phase transition occurs, significantly departs from experimental observations. The correct critical isotherms are heuristically re-established via the Maxwell equal areas rule. A long standing open problem in mean field theory is concerned with the analytic description of van der Waals isotherms for a finite size system that is consistent, in the thermodynamic limit, with the Maxwell prescription. Inspired by the theory of nonlinear conservation laws, we propose a novel mean field approach, based on statistical mechanics, that allows to calculate the van der Waals partition function for a system of large but finite number of particles $N$. Our partition function naturally extends to the whole space of thermodynamic variables, reproduces, in the thermodynamic limit $N\to \infty$, the classical results outside the critical region and automatically encodes Maxwell's prescription. We show that isothermal curves evolve in the space of thermodynamic variables like nonlinear breaking waves and the criticality is explained as the mechanism of formation of a classical hydrodynamic shock.

On quantum and relativistic mechanical analogues in mean field spin models

Conceptual analogies among statistical mechanics and classical (or quantum) mechanics often appeared in the literature. For classical two-body mean field models, an analogy develops into a proper identification between the free energy of Curie-Weiss type magnetic models and the Hamilton-Jacobi action for a one dimensional mechanical system. Similarly, the partition function plays the role of the wave function in quantum mechanics and satisfies the heat equation that plays, in this context, the role of the Schrodinger equation in quantum mechanics. We show that this identification can be remarkably extended to include a wide family of magnetic models classified by normal forms of suitable real algebraic dispersion curves. In all these cases, the model turns out to be completely solvable as the free energy as well as the order parameter are obtained as solutions of an integrable nonlinear PDE of Hamilton-Jacobi type. We observe that the mechanical analog of these models can be viewed as the relativistic analog of the Curie-Weiss model and this helps to clarify the connection between generalised self-averaging and in statistical thermodynamics and the semi-classical dynamics of viscous conservation laws.

Integrable viscous conservation laws

We propose an extension of the Dubrovin-Zhang perturbative approach to the study of normal forms for non-Hamiltonian integrable scalar conservation laws. The explicit computation of the first few corrections leads to the conjecture that such normal forms are parameterized by one single functional parameter, named viscous central invariant. A constant valued viscous central invariant corresponds to the well-known Burgers hierarchy. The case of a linear viscous central invariant provides a viscous analog of the Camassa-Holm equation, that formerly appeared as a reduction of a two-component Hamiltonian integrable systems. We write explicitly the negative and positive hierarchy associated with this equation and prove the integrability showing that they can be mapped respectively into the heat hierarchy and its negative counterpart, named the Klein-Gordon hierarchy. A local well-posedness theorem for periodic initial data is also proven. We show how transport equations can be used to effectively construct asymptotic solutions via an extension of the quasi-Miura map that preserves the initial datum. The method is alternative to the method of the string equation for Hamiltonian conservation laws and naturally extends to the viscous case. Using these tools we derive the viscous analog of the Painlevé I2 equation that describes the universal behaviour of the solution at the critical point of gradient catastrophe.

Breaking mechanism from a vacuum point in the defocusing nonlinear Schroedinger equation

We study the wave breaking mechanism for the weakly dispersive defocusing nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation with a constant phase dark initial datum that contains a vacuum point at the origin. We prove by means of the exact solution to the initial value problem that, in the dispersionless limit, the vacuum point is preserved by the dynamics until breaking occurs at a finite critical time. In particular, both Riemann invariants experience a simultaneous breaking at the origin. Although the initial vacuum point is no longer preserved in the presence of a finite dispersion, the critical behaviour manifests itself through an abrupt transition occurring around the breaking time.

Shock dynamics of phase diagrams

A thermodynamic phase transition denotes a drastic change of state of a physical system due to a continuous change of thermodynamic variables, as for instance pressure and temperature. The classical van der Waals equation of state is the simplest model that predicts the occurrence of a critical point associated with the gas-liquid phase transition. Nevertheless, below the critical temperature, theoretical predictions of the van der Waals theory significantly depart from the observed physical behaviour. We develop a novel approach to classical thermodynamics based on the solution of Maxwell relations for a generalised family of nonlocal entropy functions. This theory provides an exact mathematical description of discontinuities of the order parameter within the phase transition region, it explains the universal form of the equations of state and the occurrence of triple points in terms of the dynamics of nonlinear shock wave fronts.

On integrable conservation laws

We study normal forms of scalar integrable dispersive (non necessarily Hamiltonian) conservation laws via the Dubrovin-Zhang perturbative scheme. Our computations support the conjecture that such normal forms are parametrised by infinitely many arbitrary functions that can be identified with the coefficients of the quasilinear part of the equation. More in general, we conjecture that two scalar integrable evolutionary PDEs having the same quasilinear part are Miura equivalent. This conjecture is also consistent with the tensorial behaviour of these coefficients under general Miura transformations.
