On integrable conservation laws

We study normal forms of scalar integrable dispersive (non necessarily Hamiltonian) conservation laws via the Dubrovin-Zhang perturbative scheme. Our computations support the conjecture that such normal forms are parametrised by infinitely many arbitrary functions that can be identified with the coefficients of the quasilinear part of the equation. More in general, we conjecture that two scalar integrable evolutionary PDEs having the same quasilinear part are Miura equivalent. This conjecture is also consistent with the tensorial behaviour of these coefficients under general Miura transformations.

Integrable multi-phase thermodynamic systems and Tsallis' composition rule

We derive a class of equations of state for a multi-phase thermodynamic system associated with a finite set of order parameters that satisfy an integrable system of hydrodynamic type. As particular examples, we discuss one-phase systems such as the van der Waals gas and the effective molecular field model. The case of N-phase systems is also discussed in detail in connection with entropies depending on the order parameter according to Tsallis' composition rule.

Thermodynamic phase transitions and shock singularities

We show that under rather general assumptions on the form of the entropy function, the energy balance equation for a system in thermodynamic equilibrium is equivalent to a set of nonlinear equations of hydrodynamic type. This set of equations is integrable via the method of the characteristics and it provides the equation of state for the gas. The shock wave catastrophe set identifies the phase transition. A family of explicitly solvable models of non-hydrodynamic type such as the classical plasma and the ideal Bose gas are also discussed.

Hodographic Vortices

Vortices are screw phase dislocations associated with helicoidal wave-fronts. In nonlinear optics, vortices arise as singular solutions to the phase-intensity equations of geometric optics. They exist for a general class of nonlinear response functions. In this sense, vortices possess a universal character. Analysis of geometric optics equations on the hodograph plane leads to deformed vortex type solutions that are sensitive to the form of the nonlinearity. The case of a Kerr type nonlinear response is discussed as a specific example.

High frequency integrable regimes in nonlocal nonlinear optics

We consider an integrable model which describes light beams propagating in nonlocal nonlinear media of Cole-Cole type. The model is derived as high frequency limit of both Maxwell equations and the nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger equation. We demonstrate that for a general form of nonlinearity there exist selfguided light beams. In high frequency limit nonlocal perturbations can be seen as a class of phase deformation along one direction. We study in detail nonlocal perturbations described by the dispersionless Veselov-Novikov (dVN) hierarchy. The dVN hierarchy is analyzed by the reduction method based on symmetry constraints and by the quasiclassical Dbar-dressing method. Quasiclassical Dbar-dressing method reveals a connection between nonlocal nonlinear geometric optics and the theory of quasiconformal mappings of the plane.

On the models of nonlocal nonlinear optics

We show that under certain assumptions a general model of nonlocal nonlinear response in 1+1-dimension is equivalent to the model considered by Krolikowski and Bang for a Kerr-type medium. We derive the limit of weak nonlocality in high frequency regime and discuss the integrable cases.

Paraxial light in a Cole-Cole nonlocal medium: integrable regimes and singularities

Nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger-type equation is derived as a model to describe paraxial light propagation in nonlinear media with different `degrees' of nonlocality. High frequency limit of this equation is studied under specific assumptions of Cole-Cole dispersion law and a slow dependence along propagating direction. Phase equations are integrable and they correspond to dispersionless limit of Veselov-Novikov hierarchy. Analysis of compatibility among intensity law (dependence of intensity on the refractive index) and high frequency limit of Poynting vector conservation law reveals the existence of singular wavefronts. It is shown that beams features depend critically on the orientation properties of quasiconformal mappings of the plane. Another class of wavefronts, whatever is intensity law, is provided by harmonic minimal surfaces. Illustrative example is given by helicoid surface. Compatibility with first and third degree nonlocal perturbations and explicit solutions are also discussed.

Light propagation in a Cole-Cole nonlinear medium via Burgers-Hopf equation

Recently, a new model of propagation of the light through the so-called weakly three-dimensional Cole-Cole nonlinear medium with short-range nonlocality has been proposed. In particular, it has been shown that in the geometrical optics limit, the model is integrable and it is governed by the dispersionless Veselov-Novikov (dVN) equation. Burgers-Hopf equation can be obtained as 1+1-dimensional reduction of dVN equation. We discuss its properties in the specific context of nonlinear geometrical optics. An illustrative explicit example is considered.

Integrable equations in nonlinear geometrical optics

Geometrical optics limit of the Maxwell equations for nonlinear media with the Cole-Cole dependence of dielectric function and magnetic permeability on the frequency is considered. It is shown that for media with slow variation along one axis such a limit gives rise to the dispersionless Veselov-Novikov equation for the refractive index. It is demonstrated that the Veselov-Novikov hierarchy is amenable to the quasiclassical DBAR-dressing method. Under more specific requirements for the media, one gets the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. Geometrical optics interpretation of some solutions of the above equations is discussed.

Geometrical optics in nonlinear media and integrable equations

It is shown that the geometrical optics limit of the Maxwell equations for certain nonlinear media with slow variation along one axis and particular dependence of dielectric constant on the frequency and fields gives rise to the dispersionless Veselov-Novikov equation for refractive index. It is demonstrated that the last one is amenable to the quasiclassical DBAR-dressing method. A connection is noted between geometrical optics phenomena under consideration and quasiconformal mappings on the plane.

Quasi-classical DBAR-dressing approach to the weakly dispersive KP hierarchy

Recently proposed quasi-classical DBAR-dressing method provides a systematic approach to study the weakly dispersive limit of integrable systems. We apply the quasi-classical DBAR-dressing method to describe dispersive corrections of any order. We show how calculate the DBAR problems at any order for a rather general class of integrable systems, presenting explicit results for the KP hierarchy case. We demonstrate the stability of the method at each order. We construct an infinite set of commuting flows at first order which allow a description analogous to the zero order (purely dispersionless) case, highlighting a Whitham type structure. Obstacles for the construction of the higher order dispersive corrections are also discussed.

Cluster Percolation and Chiral Phase Transition

The Meron Cluster algorithm solves the sign problem in a class of interacting fermion lattice models with a chiral phase transition. Within this framework, we study the geometrical features of the clusters built by the algorithm, that suggest the occurrence of a generalized percolating phase transition at the chiral critical temperature in close analogy with Fortuin-Kasteleyn percolation in spin models.

Adaptive Optimization of Wave Functions for Fermion Lattice Models

We present a simulation algorithm for Hamiltonian fermion lattice models. A guiding trial wave function is adaptively optimized during Monte Carlo evolution. We apply the method to the two dimensional Gross-Neveu model and analyze systematc errors in the study of ground state properties. We show that accurate measurements can be achieved by a proper extrapolation in the algorithm free parameters.
