Level sets of prevalent Weierstrass functions

The $α$-Weierstrass function is defined as $W_g^{α,b}(x) = \sum_{k=0}^{\infty} b^{-αk} g(b^k x)$, where $g$ is a Lipschitz function on the unit circle. For a prevalent $α$-Weierstrass function, we prove that the upper Minkowski dimension of every level set is at most $1-α$, and the Hausdorff dimension of almost every level set equals $1-α$ with respect to its occupation measure. We further demonstrate that the occupation measure of a prevalent $α$-Weierstrass function is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. Consequently, the result on the Hausdorff dimension of level sets applies to a set of level sets with positive Lebesgue measure. A central tool in our analysis is the Weierstrass embedding. For a sufficiently large dimension $d$, we construct Lipschitz functions $g_0, g_1, \ldots, g_{d-1}$ such that the mapping $x \mapsto \big(W_{g_0}^{α,b}(x), W_{g_1}^{α,b}(x), \ldots, W_{g_{d-1}}^{α,b}(x)\big)$ is $α$-bi-Hölder. We also prove that such an embedding requires at least $1/α$ coordinate functions.

Exponential separation of self-conformal systems

On the real line, Bárány, Kolossváry, and Troscheit [5] made exponential separation of analytic self-conformal systems checkable through a dual iterated function system on a space of analytic functions. The quantity their condition separates is the pre-Schwarzian derivative, and this observation lets us carry the construction to conformal iterated function systems in every dimension, where the pre-Schwarzian is $T_f=\nabla\log\|Df\|$. A pointwise separation of the pre-Schwarzian cocycle implies the strong exponential separation condition, and in dimensions one and two separation of the Schwarzian cocycle implies the same condition modulo Möbius maps. Each hypothesis is equivalent to a uniform gap condition, and these are $\mathcal{C}^2$-open. On the line they are also dense, so both separation conditions are $\mathcal{C}^2$-generic there; this sharpens the genericity theorem of Bárány, Kolossváry, and Troscheit, whose open and dense set carries only the plain condition. In the plane they are dense on Jordan domains with simply connected extension domains, and both separation conditions are $\mathcal{C}^2$-generic there too. In dimensions at least three every conformal map is Möbius, so no system satisfies the condition modulo Möbius maps, and the pre-Schwarzian hypothesis becomes a pole-separation condition, dense when the generators contract strongly enough and stay away from the similarities, but not dense in general. On Jordan domains, the planar genericity and a theorem of Feng and Rapaport [13] settle the dimension drop conjecture for $\mathcal{C}^2$-generic planar systems with injective generators.

Tangents and slices of self-affine carpets

We study the fine scaling properties of planar self-affine carpets. For Gatzouras--Lalley carpets, we give a precise formula for maximal Hausdorff dimension of a tangent in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of the projection and the Assouad dimension of the corresponding vertical slice. Using regularity properties for the Assouad dimension of non-autonomous self-similar sets, this implies that the set of points with tangents that are as large as possible has full Hausdorff measure, at the critical exponent. On the other hand, we give an explicit example of a Barański carpet for which the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points for which there exists a maximal tangent has Hausdorff dimension strictly less than the Hausdorff dimension of the original carpet.

Projections of self-affine sets onto lines

We prove an all-directions Marstrand-Mattila projection theorem for self-affine measures and sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Under exponential separation, together with proximality and strong irreducibility assumptions on the linear parts, the projection of a self-affine measure onto every line has the expected Hausdorff dimension. If the proximality assumption is strengthened to strong pinching, then the same conclusion holds for the self-affine set $X$ itself, without any separation assumption. In the plane, strong irreducibility of the linear parts alone suffices, and this is sharp. As a corollary, if $X$ additionally has upper Minkowski dimension at most one, then its Minkowski dimension exists and equals its Hausdorff dimension, giving a partial affirmative answer to the folklore question of whether the Minkowski dimension exists for every self-affine set.

On the Marstrand projection theorem for the Assouad spectrum

Marstrand's projection theorem states that the Hausdorff dimension of the orthogonal projection of a Borel set in the plane onto lines is constant almost surely. This property extends to other notions of dimension, such as box and packing dimensions, but does not hold for the Assouad dimension. In this paper, we show that Marstrand's projection theorem also fails for the quasi-Assouad dimension and the Assouad spectrum, which interpolates between the upper box and quasi-Assouad dimensions. Additionally, we establish an almost sure lower bound for the Assouad spectrum of the projections using capacity-theoretic dimension profiles, and an almost sure upper bound for projections of bounded planar sets via an incidence geometry-inspired tube-counting argument. As an application, for a parametrised family of homogeneous self-similar sets, we obtain an almost sure upper bound for the Assouad spectrum which beats the trivial upper bound coming from the upper box dimension.

Self-affine sponges with random contractions

We compute the almost sure Hausdorff dimension of random self-affine sponges in $\mathbb{R}^d$ without imposing any separation conditions. In this context, randomness arises from the matrices in the defining semigroup, which are random yet the corresponding affine maps share a fixed point.

Covering number on inhomogeneous graph-directed self-similar sets

For a strongly connected inhomogeneous graph-directed self-similar set $K^C$ satisfying the strong open set condition, we characterize the asymptotic behaviour of the $r$-covering number $N_r(K^C)$ as $r \downarrow 0$ in terms of the Minkowski dimension $s_0(G)$ of the attractor. If $\int_0^\infty e^{-s_0(G)t}N_{e^{-t}}(C_i)\,\mathrm{d} t<\infty$ for all vertices $i$, then $e^{-s_0(G)t}N_{e^{-t}}(K^C)$ has a limit as $t\to\infty$, which is a positive constant when the log-contraction group $G_M$ is $\mathbb{R}$ and a positive periodic function when $G_M$ is a lattice; if the integral diverges for some $i$, the limit is infinite.

Finer geometry of planar self-affine sets

For planar self-affine sets satisfying the strong separation condition, recent work of Bárány, Hochman, and Rapaport gives mild assumptions under which the Hausdorff dimension equals the affinity dimension. In this paper, we study dominated systems in that regime and ask which finer geometric properties can be characterized. In the range $\dim_{\mathrm{H}}(X) < 1$, we characterize Ahlfors regularity by equivalent conditions involving positivity of $\mathcal{H}^s(X)$, control of projection fibers, and the identity $\dim_{\mathrm{L}}(X)=\dim_{\mathrm{H}}(X)=\dim_{\mathrm{A}}(X)$. In the range $\dim_{\mathrm{H}}(X) \ge 1$, we identify the maximal slice dimension as $\dim_{\mathrm{A}}(X)-1$ in Furstenberg directions and provide examples showing that Marstrand-type all-slice bounds cannot hold in general. We also derive projection consequences for Assouad dimension and exhibit dominated irreducible examples with $\dim_{\mathrm{aff}}(X)<\dim_{\mathrm{A}}(X)$.

Local dimension spectrum for dominated planar self-affine sets

The local dimension spectrum provides a framework for quantifying the fractal properties of a measure, and it is well understood for non-overlapping self-similar measures. In this article, we study the local dimension spectrum for dominated self-affine measures. By analyzing exact dimensionality, we obtain deterministic results that extend the scope of the local dimension spectrum beyond the almost-sure setting.

Regularity of non-autonomous self-similar sets

Non-autonomous self-similar sets are a family of compact sets which are, in some sense, highly homogeneous in space but highly inhomogeneous in scale. The main purpose of this note is to clarify various regularity properties and separation conditions relevant for the fine local scaling properties of these sets. A simple application of our results is a precise formula for the Assouad dimension of non-autonomous self-similar sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ satisfying a certain ``bounded neighbourhood'' condition, which generalizes earlier work of Li--Li--Miao--Xi and Olson--Robinson--Sharples. We also see that the bounded neighbourhood assumption is, in few different senses, as general as possible.

Thermodynamic formalism of countably generated self-affine sets

In this article, we further develop the thermodynamic formalism of affine iterated function systems with countably many transformations by showing the existence and extending earlier characterisations of the equilibrium states of finite affine iterated function systems to the countably infinite case. As an application, under mild conditions, we prove that the affinity dimension of a countable affine iterated function system is equal to the supremum of the affinity dimensions of its finite subsystems. We deduce corollaries concerning the Hausdorff dimension of countably generated self-affine sets in dimensions $1$, $2$, and $3$ satisfying mild deterministic assumptions and in arbitrary dimension with generic translations.

Tangents of invariant sets

We study the fine scaling properties of sets satisfying various weak forms of invariance. For general attractors of possibly overlapping bi-Lipschitz iterated function systems, we establish that the Assouad dimension is given by the Hausdorff dimension of a tangent at some point in the attractor. Under the additional assumption of self-conformality, we moreover prove that this property holds for a subset of full Hausdorff dimension.

Dimension of planar non-conformal attractors with triangular derivative matrices

We study the dimension of the attractor and quasi-Bernoulli measures of parametrized families of iterated function systems of non-conformal and non-affine maps. We introduce a transversality condition under which, relying on a weak Ledrappier-Young formula, we show that the dimensions equal to the root of the subadditive pressure and the Lyapunov dimension, respectively, for almost every choice of parameters. We also exhibit concrete examples satisfying the transversality condition with respect to the translation parameters.

Level sets of prevalent Hölder functions

We study the level sets of prevalent Hölder functions. For a prevalent $α$-Hölder function on the unit interval, we show that the upper Minkowski dimension of every level set is bounded from above by $1-α$ and Lebesgue positively many level sets have Hausdorff dimension equal to $1-α$.

Non-invertible planar self-affine sets

We compare the dimension of a non-invertible self-affine set to the dimension of the respective invertible self-affine set. In particular, for generic planar self-affine sets, we show that the dimensions coincide when they are large and differ when they are small. Our study relies on thermodynamical formalism where, for dominated and irreducible matrices, we completely characterize the behavior of the pressures.

Slices of the Takagi function

We show that the Hausdorff dimension of any slice of the graph of the Takagi function is bounded above by the Assouad dimension of the graph minus one, and that the bound is sharp. The result is deduced from a statement on more general self-affine sets, which is of independent interest. We also prove that the Marstrand's slicing theorem on the graph of the Takagi function extends to all slices if and only if the upper pointwise dimension of every projection of the length measure on the $x$-axis lifted to the graph is at least one.

Scaling limits of self-conformal measures

We show that any self-conformal measure $μ$ on $\mathbb{R}$ is uniformly scaling and generates an ergodic fractal distribution. This generalizes existing results by removing the need for any separation condition. We also obtain applications to the prevalence of normal numbers in self-conformal sets, the resonance between self-conformal measures on the line, and projections of self-affine measures on carpets.

Minkowski dimension for measures

The purpose of this article is to introduce and motivate the notion of Minkowski (or box) dimension for measures. The definition is simple and fills a gap in the existing literature on the dimension theory of measures. As the terminology suggests, we show that it can be used to characterise the Minkowski dimension of a compact metric space. We also study its relationship with other concepts in dimension theory.
