A Marstrand-type restricted projection theorem in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$

Marstrand's projection theorem from $1954$ states that if $K \subset \mathbb{R}^{3}$ is an analytic set, then, for $\mathcal{H}^{2}$ almost every $e \in S^{2}$, the orthogonal projection $π_{e}(K)$ of $K$ to the line spanned by $e$ has Hausdorff dimension $\min\{\dim_{\mathrm{H}} K,1\}$. This paper contains the following sharper version of Marstrand's theorem. Let $V \subset \mathbb{R}^{3}$ be any $2$-plane, which is not a subspace. Then, for $\mathcal{H}^{1}$ almost every $e \in S^{2} \cap V$, the projection $π_{e}(K)$ has Hausdorff dimension $\min\{\dim_{\mathrm{H}} K,1\}$. For $0 \leq t < \dim_{\mathrm{H}} K$, we also prove an upper bound for the Hausdorff dimension of those vectors $e \in S^{2} \cap V$ with $\dim_{\mathrm{H}} ρ_{e}(K) \leq t < \dim_{\mathrm{H}} K$.

On the Hausdorff dimension of microsets

We investigate how the Hausdorff dimensions of microsets are related to the dimensions of the original set. It is known that the maximal dimension of a microset is the Assouad dimension of the set. We prove that the lower dimension can analogously be obtained as the minimal dimension of a microset. In particular, the maximum and minimum exist. We also show that for an arbitrary $\mathcal{F}_σ$ set $Δ\subseteq [0,d]$ containing its infimum and supremum there is a compact set in $[0,1]^d$ for which the set of Hausdorff dimensions attained by its microsets is exactly equal to the set $Δ$. Our work is motivated by the general programme of determining what geometric information about a set can be determined at the level of tangents.

Super-exponential condensation without exact overlaps

We exhibit self-similar sets on the line which are not exponentially separated and do not generate any exact overlaps. Our result shows that the exponential separation, introduced by Hochman in his groundbreaking theorem on the dimension of self-similar sets, is too weak to describe the full theory.

Assouad dimension of planar self-affine sets

We calculate the Assouad dimension of a planar self-affine set $X$ satisfying the strong separation condition and the projection condition and show that $X$ is minimal for the conformal Assouad dimension. Furthermore, we see that such a self-affine set $X$ adheres to very strong tangential regularity by showing that any two points of $X$, which are generic with respect to a self-affine measure having simple Lyapunov spectrum, share the same collection of tangent sets.

Absolute continuity in families of parametrised non-homogeneous self-similar measures

Let $μ$ be a planar self-similar measure with similarity dimension exceeding $1$, satisfying a mild separation condition, and such that the fixed points of the associated similitudes do not share a common line. Then, we prove that the orthogonal projections $π_{e\sharp}(μ)$ are absolutely continuous for all $e \in S^{1} \setminus E$, where the exceptional set $E$ has zero Hausdorff dimension. The result is obtained from a more general framework which applies to certain parametrised families of self-similar measures on the real line. Our results extend previous work of Shmerkin and Solomyak from 2016, where it was assumed that the similitudes associated with $μ$ have a common contraction ratio.

Attainable values for the Assouad dimension of projections

We prove that for an arbitrary upper semi-continuous function $ϕ\colon G(1,2) \to [0,1]$ there exists a compact set $F$ in the plane such that $\dim_{\textrm{A}} πF = ϕ(π)$ for all $π\in G(1,2)$, where $πF$ is the orthogonal projection of $F$ onto the line $π$. In particular, this shows that the Assouad dimension of orthogonal projections can take on any finite or countable number of distinct values on a set of projections with positive measure. It was previously known that two distinct values could be achieved with positive measure. Recall that for other standard notions of dimension, such as the Hausdorff, packing, upper or lower box dimension, a single value occurs almost surely.

Self-conformal sets with positive Hausdorff measure

We investigate the Hausdorff measure and content on a class of quasi self-similar sets that include, for example, graph-directed and sub self-similar and self-conformal sets. We show that any Hausdorff measurable subset of such a set has comparable Hausdorff measure and Hausdorff content. In particular, this proves that graph-directed and sub self-conformal sets with positive Hausdorff measure are Ahlfors regular, irrespective of separation conditions. When restricting to self-conformal subsets of the real line with Hausdorff dimension strictly less than one, we additionally show that the weak separation condition is equivalent to Ahlfors regularity and its failure implies full Assouad dimension. In fact, we resolve a self-conformal extension of the dimension drop conjecture for self-conformal sets with positive Hausdorff measure by showing that its Hausdorff dimension falls below the expected value if and only if there are exact overlaps.

Domination, almost additivity, and thermodynamic formalism for planar matrix cocycles

In topics such as the thermodynamic formalism of linear cocycles, the dimension theory of self-affine sets, and the theory of random matrix products, it has often been found useful to assume positivity of the matrix entries in order to simplify or make feasible certain types of calculation. It is natural to ask how positivity may be relaxed or generalised in a way which enables similar calculations to be made in more general contexts. On the one hand one may generalise by considering almost additive or asymptotically additive potentials which mimic the properties enjoyed by the logarithm of the norm of a positive matrix cocycle; on the other hand one may consider matrix cocycles which are dominated, a condition which includes positive matrix cocycles but is more general. In this article we explore the relationship between almost additivity and domination for planar cocycles. We show in particular that a locally constant linear cocycle in the plane is almost additive if and only if it is either conjugate to a cocycle of isometries, or satisfies a property slightly weaker than domination which is introduced in this paper. Applications to matrix thermodynamic formalism are presented.

Dynamics of the scenery flow and conical density theorems

Conical density theorems are used in the geometric measure theory to derive geometric information from given metric information. The idea is to examine how a measure is distributed in small balls. Finding conditions that guarantee the measure to be effectively spread out in different directions is a classical question going back to Besicovitch (1938) and Marstrand (1954). Classically, conical density theorems deal with the distribution of the Hausdorff measure. The process of taking blow-ups of a measure around a point induces a natural dynamical system called the scenery flow. Relying on this dynamics makes it possible to apply ergodic-theoretical methods to understand the statistical behavior of tangent measures. This approach was initiated by Furstenberg (1970, 2008) and greatly developed by Hochman (2010). The scenery flow is a well-suited tool to address problems concerning conical densities. In this survey, we demonstrate how to develop the ergodic-theoretical machinery around the scenery flow and use it to study conical density theorems.

Structure of equilibrium states on self-affine sets and strict monotonicity of affinity dimension

A fundamental problem in the dimension theory of self-affine sets is the construction of high-dimensional measures which yield sharp lower bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of the set. A natural strategy for the construction of such high-dimensional measures is to investigate measures of maximal Lyapunov dimension; these measures can be alternatively interpreted as equilibrium states of the singular value function introduced by Falconer. Whilst the existence of these equilibrium states has been well-known for some years their structure has remained elusive, particularly in dimensions higher than two. In this article we give a complete description of the equilibrium states of the singular value function in the three-dimensional case, showing in particular that all such equilibrium states must be fully supported. In higher dimensions we also give a new sufficient condition for the uniqueness of these equilibrium states. As a corollary, giving a solution to a folklore open question in dimension three, we prove that for a typical self-affine set in $\mathbb{R}^3$, removing one of the affine maps which defines the set results in a strict reduction of the Hausdorff dimension.

Ledrappier-Young formula and exact dimensionality of self-affine measures

In this paper, we solve the long standing open problem on exact dimensionality of self-affine measures on the plane. We show that every self-affine measure on the plane is exact dimensional regardless of the choice of the defining iterated function system. In higher dimensions, under certain assumptions, we prove that self-affine and quasi self-affine measures are exact dimensional. In both cases, the measures satisfy the Ledrappier-Young formula.

Measures with predetermined regularity and inhomogeneous self-similar sets

We show that if $X$ is a uniformly perfect complete metric space satisfying the finite doubling property, then there exists a fully supported measure with lower regularity dimension as close to the lower dimension of $X$ as we wish. Furthermore, we show that, under the condensation open set condition, the lower dimension of an inhomogeneous self-similar set $E_C$ coincides with the lower dimension of the condensation set $C$, while the Assouad dimension of $E_C$ is the maximum of the Assouad dimensions of the corresponding self-similar set $E$ and the condensation set $C$. If the Assouad dimension of $C$ is strictly smaller than the Assouad dimension of $E$, then the upper regularity dimension of any measure supported on $E_C$ is strictly larger than the Assouad dimension of $E_C$. Surprisingly, the corresponding statement for the lower regularity dimension fails.

On upper conical density results

We report a recent developement on the theory of upper conical densities. More precicely, we look at what can be said in this respect for other measures than just the Hausdorff measure. We illustrate the methods involved by proving a result for the packing measure and for a purely unrectifiable doubling measure.

Genericity of dimension drop on self-affine sets

We prove that generically, for a self-affine set in $\mathbb{R}^d$, removing one of the affine maps which defines the set results in a strict reduction of the Hausdorff dimension. This gives a partial positive answer to a folklore open question.

On the geometric structure of the limit set of conformal iterated function systems

We consider infinite conformal iterated function systems on $\mathbb{R}^d$. We study the geometric structure of the limit set of such systems. Suppose this limit set intersects some $l$-dimensional $C^1$-submanifold with positive Hausdorff $t$-dimensional measure, where $0<l<d$ and $t$ is the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set. We then show that the closure of the limit set belongs to some $l$-dimensional affine subspace or geometric sphere whenever $d$ exceeds $2$ and analytic curve if $d$ equals $2$.
