Blended Mastery Learning in Mathematics

In this paper we report a study in which we have developed a teaching cycle based closely on Bloom's Learning for Mastery (LFM). The teaching cycle ameliorates some of the practical problems with LFM by making use of the STACK online assessment system to provide automated assessment and feedback to students. We report a clinical trial of this teaching cycle with groups of university level engineering students. Our results are modest, but positive: performance on the exercises predicted mastery according to the formative tests to a small extent. Students also report being supportive of the use of the new teaching cycle.

Improved Bohr's inequality for locally univalent harmonic mappings

We prove several improved versions of Bohr's inequality for the harmonic mappings of the form $f=h+\overline{g}$, where $h$ is bounded by 1 and $|g'(z)|\le|h'(z)|$. The improvements are obtained along the lines of an earlier work of Kayumov and Ponnusamy, i.e. \cite{KayPon2}, for example a term related to the area of the image of the disk $D(0,r)$ under the mapping $f$ is considered. Our results are sharp. In addition, further improvements of the main results for certain special classes of harmonic mappings are provided.

On a problem of Bharanedhar and Ponnusamy involving planar harmonic mappings

In this paper, we give a negative answer to a problem presented by Bharanedhar and Ponnusamy (Rocky Mountain J. Math. 44: 753--777, 2014) concerning univalency of a class of harmonic mappings. More precisely, we show that for all values of the involved parameter, this class contains a non-univalent function. Moreover, several results on a new subclass of close-to-convex harmonic mappings, which is motivated by work of Ponnusamy and Sairam Kaliraj (Mediterr. J. Math. 12: 647--665, 2015), are obtained.

Observations on quasihyperbolic geometry modeled on Banach spaces

In this paper, we continue our study of quasihyperbolic metric in Banach spaces. The main results of the paper present a criterion for smoothness of geodesics of quasihyperbolic type metrics in Banach spaces, under a Dini type condition on the weight function, which improves an earlier result of the two first authors. We also answer to a question posed by the two first authors in an earlier paper with R. Klén, and present results related to the question on smoothness of quasihyperbolic balls.

Conjugate Function Method and Conformal Mappings in Multiply Connected Domains

The conjugate function method is an algorithm for numerical computation of conformal mappings for simply and doubly connected domains. In this paper the conjugate function method is generalized for multiply connected domains. The key challenge addressed here is the construction of the conjugate domain and the associated conjugate problem. All variants of the method preserve the so-called reciprocal relation of the moduli. An implementation of the algorithm, along with several examples and illustrations are given.

On third Hankel determinants for subclasses of analytic functions and close-to-convex harmonic mappings

In this paper, we obtain the upper bounds to the third Hankel determinants for starlike functions of order $α$, convex functions of order $α$ and bounded turning functions of order $α$. Furthermore, several relevant results on a new subclass of close-to-convex harmonic mappings are obtained. Connections of the results presented here to those that can be found in the literature are also discussed.

Spatial Mappings for Planning and Optimization of Cellular Networks

In cellular networks, users are grouped into different cells and served by different access points (base stations) that provide wireless access to services and applications. In general, the service demand is very heterogeneous, non-uniformly distributed, and dynamic. Consequently, radio access networks create very irregular topologies with more access points where service demand is concentrated. While this dynamism requires networks with the ability to adapt to time-varying conditions, the non-uniformity of the service demand makes the planning, analysis, and optimization difficult. In order to help with these tasks, a framework based on canonical domains and spatial mappings (e.g., conformal mapping) have recently been proposed. The idea is to carry out part of the planning in a canonical (perfectly symmetric) domain that is connected to the physical one (real-scenario) by means of a spatial transformation designed to map the access points consistently with the service demand. This paper continues the research in that direction by introducing additional tools and possibilities to that framework, namely the use of centroidal Voronoi algorithms and non-conformal composite mappings. Moreover, power optimization is also introduced to the framework. The results show the usability and effectiveness of the proposed method and its promising research perspectives.

Lipschitz type, radial growth and Dirichlet type spaces on functions induced by certain elliptic operators

In this paper, we investigate properties of classes of functions related to certain elliptic operators. Firstly, we prove that a main result of Dyakonov (Acta Math. 178(1997), 143--167) on analytic functions can be extended to this more general setting. Secondly, we study the radial growth on these functions and the obtained results are generalizations of the corresponding results of Makarov (Proc. London Math. Soc. 51(1985), 369--384) and Korenblum (Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 12(1985), 99--102). Finally, we discuss the Dirichlet type energy integrals on such classes of functions and their applications.

Yukawa Potential, Panharmonic Measure and Brownian Motion

In [25] a Walk On Spheres (WOS) algorithm for Monte Carlo simulation of the solutions of the Yukawa and the Helmholtz PDE's was developed by using the so-called Duffin correspondence. In this paper we investigate the foundations behind the algorithm for the case of the Yukawa PDE. We study the panharmonic measure that is a generalization of the harmonic measure for the Yukawa PDE. We show that there are natural stochastic definitions for the panharmonic measure in terms of the Brownian motion and that the harmonic and the panharmonic measures are all mutually equivalent. Furthermore, we calculate their Radon--Nikodym derivatives explicitly for some balls, which is a key result behind the WOS algorithm.

Walk on Spheres Algorithm for Helmholtz and Yukawa Equations via Duffin Correspondence

We show that a constant-potential time-independent Schrödinger equation with Dirichlet boundary data can be reformulated as a Laplace equation with Dirichlet boundary data. With this reformulation, which we call the Duffin correspondence, we provide a classical Walk On Spheres (WOS) algorithm for Monte Carlo simulation of the solutions of the boundary value problem. We compare the obtained Duffin WOS algorithm with existing modified WOS algorithms.

Semisolidity and locally weak quasisymmetry of homeomorphisms in metric spaces

In this paper, we investigate the relationship between semisolidity and locally weak quasisymmetry of homeomorphisms in quasiconvex and complete metric spaces. Our main objectives are to (1) generalize the main result in [X. Huang and J. Liu, Quasihyperbolic metric and quasisymmetric mappings in metric spaces, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 367 (2015), 6225-6246] together with other related results, and (2) give a complete answer to the open problem given in [X. Huang and J. Liu, Quasihyperbolic metric and quasisymmetric mappings in metric spaces, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 367 (2015), 6225-6246]. As an application, we prove that the composition of two locally weakly quasisymmetric mappings is a locally weakly quasisymmetric mapping and that it is quasiconformal.

Conformal modulus on domains with strong singularities and cusps

We study the problem of computing the conformal modulus of rings and quadrilaterals with strong singularities and cusps on their boundary. We reduce this problem to the numerical solution of the associated Dirichlet and Dirichlet-Neumann type boundary values problems for the Laplace equation. Several experimental results, with error estimates, are reported. In particular, we consider domains with dendrite like boundaries, in such cases where an analytic formula for the conformal modulus can be derived. Our numerical method makes use of an $hp$-FEM algorithm, written for this very complicated geometry with strong singularities.

Schwarz-Pick type estimates of pluriharmonic mappings in the unit polydisk

In this paper, we will give Schwarz-Pick type estimates of arbitrary order partial derivatives for bounded pluriharmonic mappings defined in the unit polydisk. Our main results are generalizations of results of Colonna for planar harmonic mappings in [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 38: 829--840, 1989].

On smoothness of quasihyperbolic balls

We investigate properties of quasihyperbolic balls and geodesics in Euclidean and Banach spaces. Our main result is that in uniformly smooth Banach spaces a quasihyperbolic ball of a convex domain is $C^1$-smooth. The question about the smoothness of quasihyperbolic balls is old, originating back to the discussions of F.W. Gehring and M. Vuorinen in 1970's. To our belief, the result is new also in the Euclidean setting. We also address some other issues involving the smoothness of quasihyperbolic balls. We introduce an interesting application of quasihyperbolic metrics to renormings of Banach spaces. To provide a useful tool for this approach we turn our attention to the variational stability of quasihyperbolic geodesics. Several examples and illustrations are provided.

On lengths, areas and Lipschitz continuity of polyharmonic mappings

In this paper, we continue our investigation of polyharmonic mappings in the complex plane. First, we establish two Landau type theorems. We also show a three circles type theorem and an area version of the Schwarz lemma. Finally, we study Lipschitz continuity of polyharmonic mappings with respect to the distance ratio metric.
