The multiplicative deformation split for shells with application to growth, chemical swelling, thermoelasticity, viscoelasticity and elastoplasticity

This work presents a general unified theory for coupled nonlinear elastic and inelastic deformations of curved thin shells. The coupling is based on a multiplicative decomposition of the surface deformation gradient. The kinematics of this decomposition is examined in detail. In particular, the dependency of various kinematical quantities, such as area change and curvature, on the elastic and inelastic strains is discussed. This is essential for the development of general constitutive models. In order to fully explore the coupling between elastic and different inelastic deformations, the surface balance laws for mass, momentum, energy and entropy are examined in the context of the multiplicative decomposition. Based on the second law of thermodynamics, the general constitutive relations are then derived. Two cases are considered: Independent inelastic strains, and inelastic strains that are functions of temperature and concentration. The constitutive relations are illustrated by several nonlinear examples on growth, chemical swelling, thermoelasticity, viscoelasticity and elastoplasticity of shells. The formulation is fully expressed in curvilinear coordinates leading to compact and elegant expressions for the kinematics, balance laws and constitutive relations.

Substrate mediated nitridation of niobium into superconducting Nb2N thin films for phase slip study

Here we report a novel nitridation technique for transforming niobium into hexagonal Nb2N which appears to be superconducting below 1K. The nitridation is achieved by high temperature annealing of Nb films grown on Si3N4/Si (100) substrate under high vacuum. The structural characterization directs the formation of a majority Nb2N phase while the morphology shows granular nature of the films. The temperature dependent resistance measurements reveal a wide metal-to-superconductor transition featuring two distinct transition regions. The region close to the normal state varies strongly with the film thickness, whereas, the second region in the vicinity of the superconducting state remains almost unaltered but exhibiting resistive tailing. The current-voltage characteristics also display wide transition embedded with intermediate resistive states originated by phase slip lines. The transition width in current and the number of resistive steps depend on film thickness and they both increase with decrease in thickness. The broadening in transition width is explained by progressive establishment of superconductivity through proximity coupled superconducting nano-grains while finite size effects and quantum fluctuation may lead to the resistive tailing. Finally, by comparing with Nb control samples, we emphasize that Nb2N offers unconventional superconductivity with promises in the field of phase slip based device applications.

Spin-dependent scattering induced negative magnetoresistance in topological insulator Bi2Te3 nanowires

Studies of negative magnetoresistance in novel materials have recently been in the forefront of spintronic research. Here, we report an experimental observation of the temperature dependent negative magnetoresistance in Bi2Te3 topological insulator (TI) nanowires at ultralow temperatures (20 mK). We find a crossover from negative to positive magnetoresistance while increasing temperature under longitudinal magnetic field. We observe a large negative magnetoresistance which reaches -22% at 8T. The interplay between negative and positive magnetoresistance can be understood in terms of the competition between dephasing and spin-orbit scattering time scales. Based on the first-principles calculations within a density functional theory framework, we demonstrate that disorder (substitutional) by Ga+ ion milling process, which is used to fabricate nanowires, induces local magnetic moments in Bi2Te3 crystal that can lead to spin-dependent scattering of surface and bulk electrons. These experimental findings show a significant advance in the nanoscale spintronics applications based on longitudinal magnetoresistance in TIs. Our experimental results of large negative longitudinal magnetoresistance in 3D TIs further indicate that axial anomaly is a universal phenomenon in generic 3D metals.

Topological defects and metric anomalies as sources of incompatibility for piecewise smooth strain fields

The incompatibility of linearized piecewise smooth strain field, arising out of volumetric and surface densities of topological defects and metric anomalies, is investigated. First, general forms of compatibility equations are derived for a piecewise smooth strain field, defined over a simply connected domain, with either a perfectly bonded or an imperfectly bonded interface. Several special cases are considered and discussed in the context of existing results in the literature. Next, defects, representing dislocations and disclinations, and metric anomalies, representing extra matter, interstitials, thermal, and growth strains, etc., are introduced in a unified framework which allows for incorporation of their bulk and surface densities, as well as for surface densities of defect dipoles. Finally, strain incompatibility relations are derived both on the singular interface, and away from it, with sources in terms of defect and metric anomaly densities. With appropriate choice of constitutive equations, the incompatibility relations can be used to determine the state of internal stress within a body in response to the given prescription of defects and metric anomalies.

Unexplored photoluminescence from bulk and mechanically exfoliated few layers of Bi2Te3

We report the exotic photoluminescence (PL) behaviour of 3D topological insulator Bi2Te3 single crystals grown by customized self-flux method and mechanically exfoliated few layers (18 plus minus 2 nm)/thin flakes obtained by standard scotch tape method from as grown Bi2Te3 crystals. The experimental PL studies on bulk single crystal and mechanically exfoliated few layers of Bi2Te3 evidenced a broad red emission in the visible region. These findings are in good agreement with our theoretical results obtained using the ab initio density functional theory framework.

Biological Growth in Bodies with Incoherent Interfaces

A general theory of thermodynamically consistent biomechanical--biochemical growth in a body, considering mass addition in the bulk and at an incoherent interface, is developed. The incoherency arises due to incompatibility of growth and elastic distortion tensors at the interface. The incoherent interface therefore acts as an additional source of internal stress besides allowing for rich growth kinematics. All the biochemicals in the model are essentially represented by nutrient concentration fields, in the bulk and at the interface. A nutrient balance law is postulated which, combined with mechanical balances and kinetic laws, yields an initial-boundary-value problem coupling the evolution of bulk and interfacial growth, on one hand, and the evolution of growth and nutrient concentration on the other. The problem is solved, and discussed in detail, for two distinct examples: annual ring formation during tree growth and healing of cutaneous wounds in animals.

Dislocations, disclinations, and metric anomalies as sources of global strain incompatibility in thin shells

The strain incompatibility equations are discussed for nonlinear Kirchhoff-Love shells with sources of inhomogeneity arising due to a distribution of topological defects, such as dislocations and disclinations, and metric anomalies, such as point defects, thermal strains, and biological growth. The incompatibility equations are given for all topological surfaces, with or without boundary, which are isometrically embeddable in a 3-dimensional Euclidean space.

Light Induced Electron-Phonon Scattering Mediated Resistive Switching in Nanostructured Nb Thin Film Superconductor

The elemental Nb is mainly investigated for its eminent superconducting properties. In contrary, we report of a relatively unexplored property, namely, its superior optoelectronic property in reduced dimension. We demonstrate here that nanostructured Nb thin films (NNFs), under optical illumination, behave as room temperature photo-switches and exhibit bolometric features below its superconducting critical temperature. Both photo-switch and superconducting bolometric behavior are monitored by its resistance change with light in visible and near infrared (NIR) wavelength range. Unlike the conventional photodetectors, the NNF devices switch to higher resistive states with light and the corresponding resistivity change is studied with thickness and grain size variations. At low temperature in its superconducting state, the light exposure shifts the superconducting transition towards lower temperature. The room temperature photon sensing nature of the NNF is explained by the photon assisted electron-phonon scattering mechanism while the low temperature light response is mainly related to the heat generation which essentially changes the effective temperature for the device and the device is capable of sensing a temperature difference of few tens of milli-kelvins. The observed photo-response on the transport properties of NNFs can be very important for future superconducting photon detectors, bolometers and phase slip based device applications.

Crystal Growth and Magneto-transport of Bi2Se3 Single crystals

In this letter, we report growth and characterization of bulk Bi2Se3 single crystals. The studied Bi2Se3 crystals are grown by self flux method through solid state reaction from high temperature (950C) melt of constituent elements and slow cooling (2C/hour). The resultant crystals are shiny and grown in [00l] direction, as evidenced from surface XRD. Detailed Reitveld analysis of PXRD (powder x-ray diffraction) of the crystals showed that these are crystallized in rhombohedral crystal structure with space group of R3m (D5) and the lattice parameters are a = 4.14(2)A, b = 4.14 (2) A and c = 28.7010(7) A. Temperature versus resistivity (R-T) plots revealed metallic conduction down to 2K, with typical room temperature resistivity (R300K) of around 0.53 mohm-cm and residual resistivity of 0.12 mohm-cm. Resistivity under magnetic field ] measurements exhibited large +Ve magneto resistance right from 2K to 200K. Isothermal magneto resistance [RH] measurements at 2K, 100K and 200K exhibited magneto resistance (MR) of up to 240, 130 and 60 percent respectively at 14 Tesla. Further the MR plots are non saturating and linear with field at all temperature. At 2K the MR plots showed clear quantum oscillations at above say 10 Tesla applied field. Also the Kohler plots i.e., were seen consolidating on one plot. Interestingly, the studied Bi2Se3 single crystal exhibited the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations (SdH) at 2K under different applied magnetic fields ranging from 4Tesla to 14 Tesla

Electrical, Thermal and Spectroscopic Characterization of Bulk Bi2Se3 Topological Insulator

We report electrical (angular magneto-resistance, and Hall), thermal (heat capacity) and spectroscopic (Raman, x-ray photo electron, angle resolved photo electron) characterization of bulk Bi2Se3 topological insulator, which is being is grown by self flux method through solid state reaction from high temperature (950C) melt and slow cooling (2C/hour) of constituent elements. Bi2Se3 exhibited metallic behaviour down to 5K. Magneto transport measurements revealed linear up to 400% and 30% MR at 5K under 14 Tesla field in perpendicular and parallel field direction respectively. We noticed that the magneto-resistance (MR) of Bi2Se3 is very sensitive to the angle of applied field. MR is maximum when the field is normal to the sample surface, while it is minimum when the field is parallel. Hall coefficient (RH) is seen nearly invariant with negative carrier sign down to 5K albeit having near periodic oscillations above 100K. Heat capacity (Cp) versus temperature plot is seen without any phase transitions down to 5K and is well fitted (Cp = gammaT + betaT3) at low temperature with calculated Debye temperature (ThetaD) value of 105.5K. Clear Raman peaks are seen at 72, 131 and 177 cm-1 corresponding to A1g1, Eg2 and A1g2 respectively. Though, two distinct asymmetric characteristic peak shapes are seen for Bi 4f7/2 and Bi 4f5/2, the Se 3d region is found to be broad displaying the overlapping of spin - orbit components of the same. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data of Bi2Se3 revealed distinctly the bulk conduction bands (BCB), surface state (SS), Dirac point (DP) and bulk valence bands (BVB) and 3D bulk conduction signatures are clearly seen. Summarily, host of physical properties for as grown Bi2Se3 crystal are reported here.

Small Boxes Big Data: A Deep Learning Approach to Optimize Variable Sized Bin Packing

Bin Packing problems have been widely studied because of their broad applications in different domains. Known as a set of NP-hard problems, they have different vari- ations and many heuristics have been proposed for obtaining approximate solutions. Specifically, for the 1D variable sized bin packing problem, the two key sets of optimization heuristics are the bin assignment and the bin allocation. Usually the performance of a single static optimization heuristic can not beat that of a dynamic one which is tailored for each bin packing instance. Building such an adaptive system requires modeling the relationship between bin features and packing perform profiles. The primary drawbacks of traditional AI machine learnings for this task are the natural limitations of feature engineering, such as the curse of dimensionality and feature selection quality. We introduce a deep learning approach to overcome the drawbacks by applying a large training data set, auto feature selection and fast, accurate labeling. We show in this paper how to build such a system by both theoretical formulation and engineering practices. Our prediction system achieves up to 89% training accuracy and 72% validation accuracy to select the best heuristic that can generate a better quality bin packing solution.

On structured surfaces with defects: geometry, strain incompatibility, internal stress, and natural shapes

Given a distribution of defects on a structured surface, such as those represented by 2-dimensional crystalline materials, liquid crystalline surfaces, and thin sandwiched shells, what is the resulting stress field and the deformed shape? Motivated by this concern, we first classify, and quantify, the translational, rotational, and metrical defects allowable over a broad class of structured surfaces. With an appropriate notion of strain, the defect densities are then shown to appear as sources of strain incompatibility. The strain incompatibility relations, with appropriate kinematical assumptions on the decomposition of strain into elastic and plastic parts, and the stress equilibrium relations, with a suitable choice of material response, provide the necessary equations for determining both the internal stress field and the deformed shape. We demonstrate this by applying our theory to Kirchhoff-Love shells with a kinematics which allows for small in-surface strains but moderately large rotations.

Flux free growth of superconducting FeSe single crystals

We report flux free growth of superconducting FeSe single crystals by an easy and versatile high temperature melt and slow cooling method for first time. The room temperature XRD on the surface of the piece of such obtained crystals showed single 101 plane of Beta-FeSe tetragonal phase. The bulk powder XRD, being obtained by crushing the part of crystal chunk showed majority tetragonal and minority FeSe hexagonal crystalline phases. Detailed HRTEM images along with SAED (selected area electron diffraction) showed the abundance of both majority and minority FeSe phases. Both transport (RT) and magnetization (MT) exhibited superconductivity at below around 10K. Interestingly, the magnetization signal of these crystals is dominated by the magnetism of minority magnetic phase, and hence the isothermal magnetization (MH) at 4K was seen to be ferromagnetic (FM) like. Transport (R-T) measurements under magnetic field showed superconductivity onset at below 12K, and R = 0 (Tc) at 9K. Superconducting transition temperature (Tc) decreases with applied field to around 6K at 7Tesla, with dTc/dH of 0.4K/Tesla, giving rise to an Hc2 value of around 50 Tesla, 30 Tesla and 20 Tesla for Rn = 90, 50 and 10 percent respectively. FeSe single crystal activation energy is calculated from Thermally Activated Flux Flow (TAFF) model which is found to decreases with field.

Impact of Fe site Co substitution on superconductivity of Fe1-xCoxSe0.5Te0.5 (x = 0.0 to 0.10): A flux free single crystal study

We report synthesis of Co substitution at Fe site in Fe1-xCoxSe0.5Te0.5 (x=0.0 to 0.10) single crystals via vacuum shield solid state reaction route using flux free method. Single crystal XRD results showed that these crystals grow in (00l) plane i.e., orientation in c-direction. All the crystals possess tetragonal structure having P4/nmm space group. Detailed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images show that the crystals are grown in slab-like morphology. The EDAX results revealed the final elemental composition to be near stoichiometric. Powder X-Ray diffraction (PXRD) Rietveld analysis results show that (00l) peaks are shifted towards higher angle with increasing Co concentration. Both a and c lattice parameters decrease with increasing Co concentration in Fe1-xCoxSe0.5Te0.5 (x=0.0 to 0.10) single crystals. Low temperature transport and magnetic measurements show that the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), decreases from around 12K to 10K and 4K for x=0.03 and x=0.05 respectively. For x=0.10 crystal superconductivity is not observed down to 2K.

Crossover from magnetostatic to exchange coupling in La0.67Ca0.33MnO3/YBa2Cu3O7/La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 heterostructures

The influence of YBa2Cu3O4 (YBCO) superconductor layer (S-layer) with varying thickness d-YBCO = 20 to 50 nm on the magnetic coupling between two La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO) ferromagnet layers (F-layer, thickness d-LCMO = 50 nm) in F/S/F heterostructures (HSs) was investigated by measuring global magnetization (M) in a temperature (T) range = 2 - 300 K and magnetic field (H) range = 0 - 10 kOe. All the HSs were superconducting with critical temperature (Tc) decreasing from = 78 to 36 K with decrease in d-YBCO, whereas the ferromagnetic ordering temperature Tm = 250 K did not change much. Systematically measured M-H loops of all HSs at both T > Tc and T < Tc show three main results- (a) the two step magnetic reversal above Tc converts into a four step reversal below Tc in HSs with d-YBCO >= 30 nm, (b) the magnetic field corresponding to the additional two switching steps and their magnitude show characteristic evolution with T and d-YBCO and (c) the HS with d-YBCO = 20 nm shows radically different behaviour, where the two step magnetic reversal above Tc continues to persist below Tc and converts into a single step reversal at T << Tc. The first two results indicate magnetostatic coupling between the magnetic domains and the vortices across the two F/S interfaces resulting in reversal dynamics different from that deep within the LCMO layers. Whereas, the result c reveals indirect exchange coupling between LCMO layers through the superconducting YBCO layer, which is a clear experimental evidence of coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity in nm scale F/S/F HSs expected theoretically by C.A.R. Sa de Melo (Physica C 387, 17-25 (2003)).

Griffiths phase and critical behavior in layered Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ ferromagnet

We report the existence of Griffiths phase (GP) and its influence on critical phenomena in layered Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ ferromagnet (T$_C$ = 221.5 K). The power law behavior of inverse magentic susceptibility, 1/$χ$(T) with exponent $λ= 0.18(2)$ confirm the GP in the regime T$_C$ $<$ T $\leq$ T$_G$ = 279.0(5) K. Moreover, the detailed critical analysis via modified Arrott plot method exhibits unrealistic critical exponents $β$ = 0.77(1), $γ$ = 1.59(2) and $δ= 3.06(4)$, in corroboration with magneto-caloric study. The abnormal exponent values have been viewed in context of ferromagnetic-Griffiths phase transition. The GP has been further analyzed using Bray model, which yields a reliable value of $β$ = 0.19(2), belonging to the two-dimensional (2D) XYh$_4$ universality class with strong anisotropy present in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. The present study proposes Bray model as a possible tool to investigate the critical behavior for Griffiths ferromagnets in place of conventional Arrott plot analysis. The possible origins of GP and its correlation with insulating nature of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ have been discussed.

Non-metric connection and metric anomalies in materially uniform elastic solids

Metric anomalies arising from a distribution of point defects (intrinsic interstitials, vacancies, point stacking faults), thermal deformation, biological growth, etc. are well known sources of material inhomogeneity and internal stress. By emphasizing the geometric nature of such anomalies we seek their representations for materially uniform crystalline elastic solids. In particular, we introduce a quasi-plastic deformation framework where the multiplicative decomposition of the total deformation gradient into an elastic and a plastic deformation is established such that the plastic deformation is further decomposed multiplicatively in terms of a deformation due to dislocations and another due to metric anomalies. We discuss our work in the context of quasi-plastic strain formulation and Weyl geometry. We also derive a general form of metric anomalies which yield a zero stress field in the absence of other inhomogeneities and any external sources of stress.

Weak ferromagnetism in non-centrosymmetric BiPd 4K superconductor

We report synthesis of non-centrosymmetric BiPd single crystal by self flux method. The BiPd single crystal is crystallized in monoclinic structure with the P21 space group. Detailed SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) results show that the crystals are formed in slab like morphology with homogenous distribution of Bi and Pd. The magnetic susceptibility measurement confirmed that the BiPd compound is superconducting below 4K. Further, BiPd exhibits weak ferromagnetism near the superconducting transition temperature in isothermal magnetization (MH) measurements. The temperature dependent electrical resistivity also confirmed that the BiPd single crystal is superconducting at Tc=4K. Magneto transport measurements showed that the estimated Hc2(0) value is around 7.0kOe. We also obtained a sharp peak in heat capacity Cp(T) measurements at below 4K due to superconducting ordering. The normalized specific-heat jump, DC/γTc, is 1.52, suggesting the BiPd to be an intermediate BCS coupled superconductor. The pressure dependent electrical resistivity shows the Tc decreases with increasing applied pressure and the obtained dTc/dP is -0.62K/Gpa.
